I was inside the plane! As the only Portuguese passenger amongst the Poles.
Charter came from Warsaw. I never thought pilots would land, I always thought there was no conditions. I only thought about going to Porto Santo.I even said "Kurwa mace !" (polish swear word). I think it was too risky... Now I can laugh about it! :)
I heard it and now I see it's true Polish pilots indeed are the best.

You might be wrong, that plane departed from CDG, TLS through PXO and then landed on Madeira ;)
@@artursobczyszyn2361 I can understand if he is in error. If you have watched many of these videos, the jets tend to dance around in the air on final and there always seems to be a big crosswind component. The pilot here had his work cut out for him but made a great landing.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be for a pilot to land in Madeira and some Azores airports. For some reason only SATA operates between Azores islands.
I remember landing on Madeira twice and both were scary. Thank you to the pilots who land safely everyone, on a daily basis. This is a really REALLY nice catch.
That landing was just buttery smooth. I'd hate to have been a passenger in the back seats though
Madeira Airport. Strong winds and a "difficult approach" are the reason why this is airport is famous.

I was on that flight - bloody terrifying, thought we had met our end! But went on to have a great time, Madeira is wonderful but they really need to sort out ways to get there....

Huge congratulations to the pilots for getting the situation under control!
Really impressive! Curious to see how the pilots managed the earlier part of the approach - wish the camera angle let us see how far the pilots overflew the centerline and drifted back with the crosswind before adding right rudder to start the sideslip. There is another video that PRicardfaria shot from behind the approach (Air Berlin from 2016), which showed how far the crosswind pushed the aircraft to the right, and the gave a good angle of when the pilots started their sideslip to keep the centerline. In that case the pilot added rudder and flared a bit early, and the plane sailed a bit long before touching down...but you can see these pilots really fought to keep the plane on the track, and how they added rudder just before flare and touchdown.

I was watching this landing from the airport terminal's terrace, and it was insane to watch. It took a mix of experience, skill and balls to put that bird down with wind conditions as vicious as they were. What I can recall from this day was that the conditions at the airport stayed the same for the rest of the afternoon, and this was the last plane that landed there that day. (Correct me if I'm wrong about this last sentence)

Awesome landing. But spare a thought for the passengers. I'd be slightly worried. Brilliant Footage Paulo.
My wife was in this plane, she is FA. She told that passengers were screaming and so worried (they were 50+ age old). The passengers were not the only one to be scared - all FA were preparing to the emergency landing, thanks god only in thoughts.

I'm not 100% sure but based on the tires markings left on the runway (i.e. where many airplanes had touched down before), it should have been missed approach as the plane touches down to late. Good news that they've extended the runway in 1986.

Sure there were crosswinds involved but that was very indicative of PIO's. Gotta dance lighter on the controls!

In Madeira airport you literally have to throw the airplane to the runawya due to upward winds
I was on the flight. We had already aborted once and gone to Porto Santos to refuel and wait for better weather, personally, I don't think we should have landed either - I have never been so scared on a flight and I've done a few!

No, it absolutely shouldn't have. It was executed perfectly. The crosswinds are much different at 100ft. as they are at 10ft So, as he/she descends, conditions change and the plane reacts. But, he executed a perfect landing, buttery smooth, on the centerline. A go-around would have been irresponsible.

Is that a stabilised approach?
I don't know how it works with planes. With a car you develop 'a feel' and after some years you can feel when the car is out of shape going into or coming out of a corner and you can take evasive action. You get to a point where you can feel the backend or the frontend losing traction and you know what to do to recover from over-steer or under-steer. I can't see how you can get that level of tactile feedback with a plane but watching the video suggests the pilot can see that he's out of shape and knows how to right it. You must have to practice for that in a simulator because I really don't see how you can just do it all on feel. Do instruments tell the pilot everything he needs to know including how much 'crabbing' the plane is doing?

I wonder if the passengers had to pay extra for getting a roller coaster ride as well as a plane ride.
Airport with horrible crosswinds. Lots of finesse required to coax the aircraft to the centerline of the runway. Crabbing scares people and looks terrifying but it is the only way. Lots of videos done of landings at this airport.

And the plane had to be decommissioned after this landing because EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE INTERIOR WAS COVERED IN SHIT!
