  • Thought I would do something different for a while before I come back to the Outpost ship. Haven't done a tutorial on KSP in forever. I remember my SSTO tutorial that was like 2 hours long. That was so many years ago though it's super outdated now. But, how knows. If this video does really well then I just might make a new SSTO tutorial for KSP 1.11

1k hours in KSP, I've never seen a better clear cut explanation of plane making, I'm glad I subscribed, good job!

While the technique for aligning wheels at 2:34 works, you could also toggle the rotation to 'Absolute' rather than 'Local',as long as the snap alignment is on it will fix to a perfectly straight alignment which is good if your wings are at a different angle.

Thanks Vaos! The KSP community needs "basics" videos from time to time. New players come along all the time, especially thanks to buzz about the sequel. Devs keep changing features and fixing bugs, and new ways of doing things get discovered. Most of the folks posting videos have been at it for a long time and can't remember what it was like to get started.
[SuperSeniorityGuy voice] Of course, *I* have been making planes in KSP longer than you have, 1.21 kerjillion years. That's why *I* don't make "basics" videos, because *I* am just way too advanced to think on your, ahem, level. (cough cough and I can't remember cough) I tought Jebediah Kerman how to fly. Oh wait, that's not a good thing...

I have some notes on stone tablets from my training days:
      • four forces of flight
      • where to find the buttons and keys for the symmetry modes, the CoM / CoL indicators, and the attach / offset / rotation modes
      • put fuel tanks near the CoM
      • control surfaces attempt to automatically map to keyboard as if they are rocket fins, so sometimes need to be set up manually (I.e. the vertical stabilizer tries to pitch and roll.)

@@DistracticusPrime In addition to what you listed, most of the planes I see are over-controlled leading to overly aggressive piloting. Setting control authority to 5 deg or less develops much better and more realistic piloting skills.

One more thing to keep in mind is how your center of mass changes as you burn fuel, a plane that is stable when full of fuel may not be stable when it is low on fuel.

I didn't know those differences between air intakes, thanks.

I know I’m very late. But is it fair comparing the weight of the mk1 cockpit with the mk1 inline cockpit straight up? Should it not be the weight of the mk1 in-line combined with a cone, docking port or intake v the weight of the mk1? Unless you plan on flying with a flat nose :)

I would think to campare it only if you are using a simple nosecone. If you are getting any other utility the weight savings is 100% given

I learned something new. I always used the adjustable ram jet for all planes atmospheric and sstos. With this tutorial I learned that I was using the wrong one and you showed how to keep the plane from wandering all over the runaway. Thank you for this vaos and I'm I speak for all of us when I say, we would love to see more.

I find that having the CoL ball just behind and above the CoM makes for the highest stability. I also like to try and get the LoT (line of thrust) to be just BARELY below the CoM. That, with a slight pitch to the wings, gives a craft a natural tendency to lift, which makes for far easier low-speed, high-altitude flight. It's a wobbly goblin if you do it wrong, but if you can get it just right, it's stable, and will climb steadily forever with almost no pilot input.

I copied it all exactly and the engine powers on but doesn’t give any thrust. Idk what’s happening cuz I’ve tried every jet engine and it’s not working at all

Enjoyed your video and you made a sweet little plane. However, I wonder if players who are unlocking the tech tree and trying to build their first aircraft would benefit from a tutorial on how to build using only the most basic aircraft parts - including those desperately weak engines.

True, this was meant for sandbox tutorials years ago. But i do have a stream in which i make the first plane using the very first plane parts you get in career mode. ruclips.net/user/liveMAfp3ROe69E?feature=share hope this helps. 😊

thanks for the super tutorial, i was wondering why my really old designs with many intakes did not work anymore at high altitude...
