Man, Gagne was so much fun to watch in his doped-up prime. He had that incredible mix of high-90s fastball, high-80s disappearing changeup, and the occasional looping 70 mph curve. Add in his elite command, and it’s obvious why Gagne was the best relief pitcher in baseball from 2002-2004.
In 2002, Smoltz had 55 saves but he did have a high ERA. Gagne had 52 saves but he had a low ERA, so Gagne was the best closer in all of baseball in 2002. HOWEVER, the best overall bullpen pitcher in 2002 was Chris Hammond of the Braves, who had a 0.95 ERA (UNREAL) In 2003, I think the best bullpen pitcher in all of baseball was John Smoltz. But Gagne was obviously the best closer in 2003 due to all those saves and no blown saves. And in 2004, Gagne was great again, but he was not the best bullpen pitcher or closer in 2004 = Armando Benitez (Marlins), Joe Nathan (Twins) and Mariano Rivera, were the best, these 3 pitchers were the best bullpen pitchers and closers in 2004.
He was recovered from Tommy John surgery. Look what happened to him later - back, nerve, and hip problems. If he took them to recover from injury during that era and not to gain an advantage, he'd be the only one. Hard to believe.
Eric Gagne could thank his Lucky Stars when the Red Sox picked him up in 2007 and got a World Series Ring with them! Back then Gagne was pure shit(Literally), and that the only time they brought him up was to eat up innings on Unmanageable Games when they were down way too far to come back in.
Really to bad his or anyone's career is tainted with the drug issue. The drugs can improve your performance but you have to have the talent to start with. No drugs in the world can make you a good hitter or be able to spot your fastball and throw a changeup that drops like a bowling ball. I'll never forget watching him come in from the bullpen to this song and strike out the side. Most electric sports moment I have ever seen live.
I've never seen a pitcher makes so many really good hitters look like they had never played baseball before. Guys were absolutely helpless against him.
Yeah, and look what happened to him. His body fell apart. And not everyone was on roids. Even Gagne says he regrets it and wishes he had never done it.
Didn't strike a nerve. Gagne's been gone like you said. But the fact is most MLB players are roiding because it's been a sport in decay. And I never said anything about you being a Braves fan, just talking about Kimbrel and their team. It's interesting that you're calling me butt hurt when you're the one reverting to homophobic name calling and white privileged racial bashing. But hey I was just talking about the Braves, I guess your hurt ego felt a need to defend itself for whatever reason.
Hell yea this was my childhood! Gagne, percival, k rod, Shawn green. Angels and Dodgers all day
Aaron Knaus Paul lo duca Garrett Anderson Rickey Henderson Chone Figgins Troy Glaus Cesar Izturiz I'm a Dodger fan but I grew up watching both

I remember that looping slow curve of Gagne's would buckle the knees of many a batter after seeing Gagne's high heat.

Oh, those ninth innings were so cool. Nothing like it since. I wanted so badly that he wasn't on steroids.
his fastball change up combo is so overpowering. that fb is unhittable I feel like if you make solid contact your bat would explode
He finished is career with the Québec Capitales in the Can-Am League.
