- We speak to Dame Esther Rantzen’s daughter Rebecca Wilcox who, on Tuesday night, accepted the Gold Medal award on behalf of her mother at the RTS awards.
Rebecca joins us today as Scotland reaches an important milestone towards meeting the urgent need for an assisted dying law. If passed, the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults Bill would permit medical assistance for people wishing to end their lives.

When my pet cat had an incurable disease, it was inhumane to let the animal suffer...and I've had to make the decision to let him/her go many times.
Humans are animals as well and I've seen my parents and my brother suffer, because the law won't allow a nobel transition to the next realm.
Stop the suffering....let them go!
Shame there's no palliative care for animals.
Animal lives and human lives are not the same.
@@elizabeth.601 absolutely, humans have an imperishable soul animals do not!
So glad I’m living in the Netherlands, where we do have this law a long time already. Sadly there are still a lot of doctors against it and will not assist. And there are so many requests, that not everybody can be helped. I hope they will find a kind of medication, that people can take without having to rely on third parties. Ofcourse not everyone should be able to obtain it randomly, but something has to make it easier.
Thankfully there are many Calvinistic Christians among Reformed circles in the Netherlands and also al arge contingent of Catholics who would not be happy with Euthanasia or deliberate killing of a precious person .
Good for Esther and good for Scotland. I wouldn't see a pet suffer let alone myself or a family member
Most Scots are against the proposed change in the law.
Exactly what I've been saying for years! Anybody who has witnessed a loved one dereriorate slowly and painfully wouldn't object. 20 years on and I'm still affected by nursing my da in his last week or so of life. Even though he would have chosen life every day of the week, the relief in his eyes when we told him he was terminal said it all. He was stoic and hid some of his pain so not to upset us. We were lucky, I guess, it was quick, I can't imagine going through that for months or years
I know if I know that I cannot function as a person and my mind is getting old as that is what dementia is that I would not want my family to suffer the way I did with my Aunty. See did not recognize me and thought I was her brother. We talked about assisted dying and My Aunt would have done it. There needs to be a legal framework where you can request in advance before that stage and an independent assessment before the process takes place and no courts action to stop it once approved against the will of the individual. ------- The UK has free speech for all and if people feel this is killing than let them speak as they have a right.
Psllative care is good i agree my sister in law had a peaceful death in a hospice and one of my brothers had a peaceful death with hospice care at home
Well they were lucky. Its not always possible to get decent palliative care and even if you do its not always a peaceful death. Often terminally ill people suffer months or even years of unbearable pain before they are admitted to a hospice. You really don't have a clue what you are talking about.
My original comment has been removed because I referred to assisted dying as killing.
I was a Senior Charge Nurse for thirty years and believe my views are legitimate.
Your views are astounding for somebody who claims to be in the caring profession.
Somebody choosing to die is trying to escape unimaginable pain, which the NHS is unable/unwilling to do anything to properly alleviate.
Killing somebody is a crime over which the victim has no control.
Choosing to die is an act of individual agency and dignity.
But thanks for letting us know you want people to tough it out, just to please you. Your cruelty is worrying.
@@biggerissues6085These assisted dying laws are absolutely horrifying. It will be just the thin end of the wedge.
@williamjohnston4666 Oh, grow up and help yourself by reading about the topic.
Next thing, you be telling us you get your social and cultural policy outlook from Lee Anderson and Nigel Farage.
Please tell me you don't have the vote.
My comment was removed too. 77th Brigade are all over this topic, because the state have chosen to push it, and prevent alternative views being aired.
@@biggerissues6085 So, you have NO argument to put, except that you want to deny me my democratic right to vote. Why did you even bother ?
Sausages.
It is cruel - but then again, it was foisted on us by the Roman Catholics (the Earl of Cork and Orrery, in particular), who wilfully overlook their own dogma of misericordia.
There are palliative care facilities with highly trained, compassionate staff throughout the country.
Many patients can receive palliative care for years in order to manage their conditions.
Perhaps more emphasis needs to be focused on palliative care for people who live with distressing conditions rsther than shifting the focus onto assisting people to die.
When it becomes obvious that the end is near palliative care staff do their utmost to alleviate pain and suffering to give patients a dignified death.
I think this is an abuse of a public profile. Assisted suicide is wrong. Love all the parallels with pets. It's that level. Sigh.
She knew Saville was no good but said nothing. But still making money from television.
Please provide clear and resolute evidence she knew.
I know you won't because your type always fails to elaborate.
@@biggerissues6085 she said it herself on a live interview. Do your own research in future. It’s easy if you even bother.
😸😈😸
Ester y are wrong just take a look at what is happening in other countries with assisted dying. Its abused
In most countries they have strong enough legislation that it isn't abused. Just another alarmist comment.
@@user-hl1ex6py8l not so, how many lies have been told to us in the name of covid for example?
@@margaretha907 Now you are sounding like a conspiracy theorist.
Scotlandistan 💯👍😂😂😂😂
Scotland taking a regressive step. God decides the hour not humans
That is YOUR belief. Not everyone believes in your god.
Don't mix up religion with medicine.
@@catn5907 O.K.I accept that not everybody believes in Almighty God but be careful what you wish for, I understand that minors are being "putdown" in Belgium and Canada?
@@margaretha907 and where is the proof for that??
You should not force your beliefs onto others.
@@margaretha907 Whilst that is true of Belgium it is not true of Canada only adults over the age of 18 years can make an application for assisted dying in Canada. In the case of Belgium it is only terminally ill children will be considered. But there were additional strict conditions, including that the child was judged to be able to understand what euthanasia means and the parents also have to consent to it. Its extremely rare and its only happened in the most extreme cases where the child's suffering was unbearable. Most countries that allow assisted dying only allow it for adults and I am sure if they can make it work so can we here in the UK. Maybe you should get your facts straight before commenting.
