  • Nigel Farage is back. Are the Conservatives done for?

Nigel Farage has announced that he will be standing to be elected as the MP for Clacton after taking over the leadership of Reform UK from Richard Tice. Farage had previously ruled himself out of running as an MP in the 2024 general election, saying he was focusing on getting Donald Trump elected in the United States. He has "changed his mind".
Andrew Marr joins Hannah Barnes and Freddie Hayward on the New Statesman podcast to discuss how the return of Nigel Farage to politics will impact Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives. Spoiler: badly.
The team also discuss the Lib Dems pledge for social care, and why the main two parties refuse to talk about this issue which is affecting a high proportion of the electorate.

I think there's no doubt they are going to be severely crippled, but there's a great deal of doubt it's the end for the Tories.
They will still have enough numbers to be the party of opposition.
At that point, if they don't get their act together, then indeed they will be wiped out during local elections in the years to come.
Sunak will be given the boot. The Tories will struggle to find a new leader with any gravitas, but eventually, they will reform around the values they once stood for.
There are some decent recognisable figures still young enough to make a go at a return to form.
They need to shake off the incredibly troublesome right arm that have gained too much power chasing the likes of Farage.
For what? 12% of the vote?
      Madness.

I think there is far too much personification of the ‘Tory Party.’ Sure the government has done a lot wrong over the last 14 years, but it’s been a coalition of people, a few have done reasonable jobs, many haven’t. What however is a very bad thing for everyone is a sort of 1-party Labour run state. Labour will win, and fair enough, they probably are due a go but these comments just annoy me really. Trust me now, Labour will not be perfect, there will be a lot of complaints and who knows, they may well end up being just as bad.

Because the media give him the spotlight constantly. Ed Davey for example, doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention despite actually being an MP and leader of the Lib Dems. Yet, ironically, I think Farage has shown that there are ways to move politics in this country in directions without being in charge of the big two parties. The only other figure I think that mimics this skill is Mike Lynch. That man would be the most naturally gifted politician of our times if he wanted to be involved and I could see vast chunks of working class voting for him.

Labour will win this one, probably the next, and then? Anyone's guess. People are stupid, and the press is owned by the same billionaires who own the Tories so they'll get back in. Mass Migration is costing the country not adding to the country.
Mass low skilled immigration has suppressed wages, and also as a result has grown government subsidizes through working benefits, so the public is being drained of taxes and drained of growth. So much so the over 50s the top 10% who pay 54% of taxes are retiring early, rather than pay high taxes, the tax has run out and i predict it will now continue to fall until the bloated state is cut from 47% of GDP back to 35% of GDP....

      John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

One thing I get from all of the middle & upper middle class commentators on immigration is we need it to keep wages down .
There seems to be a huge acceptance in the ruling class that the poor working classes should stay poor for the benefit of the country.
Establishment parties & commentators really come across as having real contempt for lower paid workers & quickly dismiss any hope of higher wages & improvement in there lives & just shout for more cheap workers from abroad.

    • @andybrice2711

Well, it is a trade-off. Migrant labour makes work more affordable. But yes, also undercuts local wages. If we could just be honest about that, then we could debate whether the trade-off is worth it. And help locals stay ahead, either by up-skilling, or through some sort of tax structure which prevents them being undercut too aggressively.
