The 2023 Nissan Z is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, the same one you find in the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 and in the Z, you’ll get 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque connected to either a tight 6 speed manual transmission or a 9-speed auto with paddle shifters.
After what felt like forever it will finally go on sale this spring with a starting price of around $40,000 which from just looking at the spec and tech sounds like an incredible deal.
However, that’s not what I’m most excited about when it comes to the new Z. The numbers all look great, don’t get me wrong, but there are other cars that have equally impressive numbers, take the Supra and the M2 for example.
What really gets me going with the Z is its design. The clear connection going back decades to the very first Datsun 240Z.
In an automotive world where most new cars either try too hard with fake vents and bodylines that don’t mean anything or don't try at all and disappear into the vast ocean of generic, forgettable designs, the Nissan Z is a fantastic example of what can be done by honoring the past.
It doesn’t need fake plastic masquerading as vents or an aggressive, frowning face shouting for attention.
If anything, the Nissan Z shows just how timeless of a design the 240Z really was.

I love the new Z. I was skeptical about the grill at first but it has really grown on me. Much more than the BMW grill as well as the Supra/WRX.
The BMW grills are a lost cause
@@Bembli yep. I think the latest 4-series coupe is a bit of a disaster looks-wise. The grille obviously, but the proportions are wrong, imo. The wheelbase is too much. And it looks too long. It's ok in posed shots, but in the 'flesh' its a big let-down.
Its shape reminds me of a slipper. The kind used for corporal punishment! Like a giant man could pick it up by the trunk and it'd flex and wobble around the mid-point, as though its floorpan was made out of rubber! (Note to self: stop smoking weed in the day...😖🤭)
BMW have too many vehicle variants using just the one chassis. Cost-cutting, I suppose. Which is a bit naughty considering the base price of an M3/M4 these days.
@@5amH45lam at least the supra is selling and also the m3/m4
@@Bembli the only bmw grill that i don’t think is a lost cause is that of the new M5, other than that yup
@@alexmaccain2362 All cars sell, more or less...
At first I wasn't sure about that very large rectangular grill. Now I don't mind it as much but I think an aftermarket styling kit could amplify this car even more. I do wish they shrunk those huge door handles though.
That's what Z's were always all about. Perfect blank canvas for enthusiasts but looks amazing out of the factory.
A lot of reviewers say it actually looks a lot better in person.
the failrady Z spec has a different grill that is split into two parts and not rectangular it looks much better check it out, i’m guessing they may even incorporate it into production models of base Z depending on how well received it is
At first I didn’t really like that rectangle grill until I realized it looks really good while the car is in motion. And that’s just on a screen, I’m sure in person and in motion it will look even better
That rectangular grille is basically the 240z grille, i see nothing weird about it. Whats weird is the bloated look, since it is a 370 underneath.
Here's a fun video idea:
Take a car and then choose, let's say, four different body kits for it and then compare them and choose which one you like the most! For example, if you were to choose the Nissan 350Z you could show the VeilSide wide body kit, the Amuse 380RS kit, a C-West kit and a Top Secret kit and then explain some of the lines and inspirations you can see behind them. I think it would be awesome!
saw one in person recently, and I must say- the new grille didn't bother me. it's pointed in the middle- so it's actually fairly dynamic for a square. looking around the whole car, i'd find it very difficult to make any improvements
Same, looks amazing from standing height. The lack of fake vents makes it look clean and futuristic
@@cosmic_gate476 agreed. love the taillight graphic especially.
@@cosmic_gate476 EXACTLY!
No fake vents and grills, not overstyled, ...
A miracle nowadays!
@@budja1501 You can give more aggresive front sprillter, side skirts or diffuser
@@mayuravirus6134 yes you could- but the point is that the design is simple and it isn’t cluttered or over-styled. It doesn’t need aggressive side skirts or a huge bottom jaw front splitter, the design is serene and contained
I thoroughly enjoyed this comparison video! Nissan did an amazing job at capturing the spirit of the OG Z. While a very clean and simple desgin, the designers payed close attention the details for example, the Katana blade to further accentuate the silhouette. Well done!
When nissan unveiled Z proto every one hate the design, but now almost every one love it!
No one hated it?
this vid was so good that I sat through the whole vpn ad. love the content. keep up the good work man
Those 240z drawings look amazing, you’re such an artist!
I still think it's a stunner. I can't wait to see it in person.
Cor blimey, it's beautiful. From every angle. Inside and out. Powerful and very reasonably priced, too. This will be a MASSIVE hit.
One thing that I really like that they did is that the front of the hood comes to a point on both cars.
I feel like the s15 was an equally good throwback to the s13. Obviously not such a wide age gap and made in a different era, but when Nissan wants to they can really bring the a-game
Great video! Corvette seemed to do a similarly good job with the C7 as modern evolution to the C3.
I like the design, they keep a winning formula of modernization and retro styling going hand to hand, I want to see how it will look with the custom official parts as the Fairlady Z Proto or Nismo when available, and why not, even RocketBunny and Greddy.
@6:44 The clean area below the headlight is a nod to the original 240Z. The line begins below the headlight, takes a near 90-degree turn towards the bottom of the grill. Follow that up to the hood and back to the headlight and the can see the influence is clear. It is a simple, yet beautiful design. Cheers to Nissan for a stunning, retro design.
So sad that this cars will probably have a $20,000 markup over sticker price, but man what a beautiful design
Unfortunately in todays climate that’s a possibility. Hopefully Nissan corp will have a say in it and come to an agreement with the dealers
@@Bembli i hope the same! Thanks for another great video man 🙌🏼
@@jonathanventura4957 I'm waiting a couple years and there will be almost no markups then. There's just not that big of a market for a rear wheel drive, two seater hatchback.
My uncle had a 240 and my aunt who unfortunately passed on had a 300zx twin turbs and with this new design it combines both designs and I love it and also with the way the grill looks It sort of reminds me of the 350z has anyone else noticed that 🤔
Bembli, your attention to detail is excellent and I really appreciate these Z videos you’ve put out. Bravo.
4:00 i have fallen in love 😍😍😍
my fave z is the 300zx and the first gen 300zx turbo.my grandpa had that version and i loved that car
I’m a massive Nissan fan and man does it just feel awesome to see them actually do something right
I really wanna see someone black out that little panel under the taillights. See what it looks like with a little bigger black zone and little less color back there.
nissan showed that every car does not also need to look like it's angry
I love how you put the handmade draw of the car
I'm so excited to see what the Aftermarket is gonna look like the new Z
I love how the Nissan Z looks, I thought the rectangle grill looked really cool on it and im not a fan of large grills either, the car as a whole is amazing
I really love new Nissan Z design!
Same here. Can't wait to see it when it comes out this spring. I also hope a roadster follows suit soon too.
@@brianlee9233 thx for comment, I love the concept of like "modern JDM" it represents even if it isn't. On the other side, Supra didn't really live up to the hype. No manual, non japanese made, and styling isn't at all referenced to the original Supra. I think Nissan really nailed it with this one!
Only thing I don’t like is the new dainty headlights. I wish they would have been circular like the original. But aside from that, great looking car!
240z actually taken sexy design from old Jaguar E type, i like both cars 👍
I love your work man! With all the romours surrounding that nissan is working on their next s-chassis for 2025, I think it would be amazing to see your take on an s16 (maybe on thesketchmonkey chanel). It would be interesting to see an s13/14/15 redisign, but it would be even better to see what you come up with if you were given complete freedom (without the need to parameterize yourself with the s-chassis' existing designs)
one of my favorite things of the old z is also above the wheel well, the curve to the roof line and how that body line feels in person am sad to see that its kinda has a generic curve up or a more modern angle and not a more round pronounce curve into the hatch back and a sharper angle down back.
Two takes on the looks , the front grill , the split grill is just perfect and the lip wing ...i don't know how to make it stand out just like the previous 370z
I think its excellent and a much better looking car than the previous modern z's, the z33 and z34
I like the grill but what i really loved was that alternative grill shown on tokyo auto salon (the orange car). It fits the car better imo and it would be nice to have both options
Was there a mic malfunction towards the end or was it just me ?
Nice but the price should not have gone up more than $5000, for what is basically the same parts.
A retro Fairlady G Nose kit might be interesting on the new Z...
Tremendous car! What's your color choice on new Z ?
It#s great looking car (compared to some of these other modern atrocities). The design cues and nods are brilliant. Shame we are not getting it in the UK :(
I think the new Z looks good, but something seems odd about it but it’s still an elegant design
The shape of the headlights and grill are my nitpicks. Still gorgeous overall, though.
370z oddness, bloated fish look, Nissan can't seem to get away from it currently.
Cant do anything about it man, its a 370 under the skin
It’s the grill it looks like a nutcracker doll
I don't know where I will get the money or when I will get the money but I will damn for sure have one in my garage in the future
I'd like to see a render of a 240 ZG (G-Nose) front end modernized on the new Nissan Z.
fantastic! except your mic in the 11minute mark...
You should buy one! @Bembli
Cant wait for dealers to overprice the shit out of them
Can't wait till "young cash strapped owners" find out you have to completely disassemble its twin intercoolers.....just to do a plug change.....
@@Mexxx65 wait how did you know that?
@@djpollo2474 Many of us know this about this Nissan V6 throwaway engine.
The Z with the Custom Proto bodykit is the one i want, is how the final design should've been, looks more similar to the original, more sporty, but sleek.
Nice car anyway.
Surprised u haven't done a vid on the Gr Gt3 concept as yet
I think people dont like the squared grill on the new Z. On the 370z its slightly smaller but its rounded if it were squared as well they would look similar.
Que auto tienes???
Hi Bembli, can you please make a redisign of the Lexus IS200/IS300?
The updated Z will be joining alongside my current 370Z (which I am not getting rid of) in my garage in a couple years.
Keep the 370z! Its looks waaay more cohesive and a timeless design. New Z looks well weird!
Idk why the OG z looks more dynamic
Why you're not wearing your 240Z t-shirt ?
Too cold here in Florida atm 😄
I thought I liked the Z when I first saw it (It may have been the prototype, which looks a little better), but I've since changed my mind: It looks like it has an underbite. It's really hulky from the greenhouse down. I hate what the spoiler does to the back end; it reminds me of the Tesla Model Y. I don't like the two-tone of the pillars and roof. The front looks like the new MX-5, which is fine, I guess, but it's already been done. Anyway, I'm not in love.
I wonder if they'll make a zg nose for this one
huh wtf i’m half israeli half swiss and man the sponsor add was literally aimed at me 😂
It's really good looking car. Will it be best selling Z cars. I doubt it, since this cars rather have lukewarm reception from journalist and automotive enthusiast especially when sport coupe market is declining. For me, the 300zx and 350z was more succesful design as a Z car.
F all sponsors, not a sell out.
So...you mean Alfonso Albasia and Satoru Tai nailed it in terms of design?
What’s wrong with the new Toyotas? I think they’ve been doing great lately the gr 86 and Supra are great sports cars and the Gr Yaris is amazing
Also the tail lights dont look like the 240z at all, Im pretty sure Nissan even admitted to having based the tail lights off the 300z
She's a beaut, Clark!
The title should be more like “Grand father and Grand son.”
I'm sorry but I still hate that grill. They should of at least rounded the corners or somehow make the grill half the size
The only thing I totally disliked are the door handles, it just looks wrong.
They can teach Acura a thing or two...
Right!
Lol I can't forget the rebadged civic 💀😂
It's true
Let's see what post-Ghosn Nissan era have in store.
It looks strange to me, like a 70s french car when they went mad over Béziers. The headlights look to have eyebags out of poor sleeping. A simpler shape, like the wing of the Z32, would have worked better
I've tried it with PS, it's on my Instagram
I would have uploaded it here if I it allowed me, you can get your comment deleted if you link photos
I'd go as far to say....Nissan have somehow made the 370z look worse!!!! with this new Z!
let this design team make a new R36, so we can have an homage to the original GT-Rs
Meanwhile me who loves the grill
The 350Z was gorgeous, the 370Z not so much, really glad the new Z looks great

I love this video and all your others but wouldn't it be Toyota and Honda isntead of Acura?
Im just thankful its not an suv.
And the 80s skylines are the cousins
i hope it rides better then my 76..haha
Meanwhile Land Rover changed the iconic defender and made another thing. This Nissan design reminds me of g wagon which stayed the way it is and rich people can’t stop buying it.
The problem is the car brands are just bringing back the name of the car and not the car itself. Supra, NSX, hell even the trailblazer are not modern versions of the older cars. A completely different car with the old name on it just for name recognition to get you to buy
You think the Z is in that same category? Genuinely curious
@@Bembli hell no, nissan finally did something right
Eh NSX is more of a ethos then anything, but people want retro versions of everything.
This execution of a retro design is excellent, but I really just like that a new sports model has more paint on it's nose than needlessly blacked out nonsense for a change. I though wee'd be done with the acres of blacked out front end shit on every car by now having started in about 2011, but were not. At least Chevy fired the 2019 Camaro guy. Ha Ha. I wish the Elantra N had the N-Line's nose. You'll see what I mean.
I feel like I’m getting this effect backwards compared to everyone else, I loved the design when I first saw it but the more I see it the less I like it, maybe if I see it in person I’ll revert to my original view on it.
Copy paste from Chip Foose's analysis
It’s so so close to a perfect design, there’s something off I can’t really figure out about the grill it kind of looks like a nutcracker doll with it’s mouth open it just doesn’t look right it’s not even the size
The rectangle opening looks blaaaaa
70s, not 60s. Great video, though.
thumbnail is a bit of a stretch my guy
yeah it's nice, but you forget that because of that this car will not be avaiblable in half of the world ...
The J29 (A90) Supra has real vents actually, but you have to take off the covers. Why put them there in the first place you ask? Because they’re just dumb.
Unfortunately Nissan reliability is in the crapper so a great design can only take it so far.
Prefer the original one
Yeah! Take notes Toyota! Start with a 20 year old platform, Put in an inferior Renault engine, an inferior Mercedes transmission, take off the Brembo's, the Electronic diff, the forged wheels, the premium tires,, make the car 250 lbs heavier, put in cheap plastic interior, and then you're at Nissan's level 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bro don’t overcomplicate it. It’s a big rectangle and those look static instead of dynamic. No need for 5 minutes of blablabla…
No need to watch the video!
@@Bembli Don’t get me wrong, I like your videos and opinions in general if you‘re not beating around the bush too much like here.
@@ctlspl you're entitled to your opinion, even if it is wrong. The Z is gorgeous
@@sargeantschnutz5767 I love it too, just the rectangle is too static for me. The aftermarket bumper looked gorgeous.
The rectangle is simple and effective, it's leaned forward, pushing the car forward almost. It's aggressive without being angry. I think it's a really good part of the design
Toyota Is great at boring cars but they are too lazy to make their own. Now the ones they do make last long are mostly underpowered for the US anyway.
Nissan makes good looking cars but mechanically they suck. Please tell me they put a decent transmission in it.
As a former owner of the 2003 Z, I feel the design has not really advanced in 20 years. Sure saluting older designs is cool but I'd love to see it push the boundary.
This video has been ratio'd to hell xD I guess this is offically a garbage/Boomer take lol
Is not like Toyota did the same whit the 2000gt and the gt86 in the Windows... they can get teached!
I disagree completely, you sound like a car salesman.
To me this new Z looks exactly like a slight update of the existing 370z, you just have to look at the roofline, with just some old 300z tail lights stuck on they don't even look like Nissan tried to integrate them. And the front.....well could have Nissan just slapped on a more ugly nose?? If anyone can see bits of the original 240/260z you're likely on hard drugs. Overall I think the job Nissan gave to design the new Z, went to some High School car designer competition winner.
Clearly you have overlooked all the above. And took direct aim at the current Toyota Supra GR. BUT I challenge ANYONE who has seen it racing around American tracks in race livery, and not noticed its stunning Toyota 2000GT lines, it's uniqueness. That's PROPER Retro guys. Not this 14yr old been given a 370z and asked to tack on a few bits to make it look...kinda retro.FAIL.
Styling aside I find it very peculiar that there are no published performance numbers available. It carries the same Z34 chassis code as the 370Z according to Nissan. The 370Z was a great car back in 2009. It’s 2022 and the new Z consists of the same chassis code, an engine lifted from an Infiniti and a statement from the chief engineer that it’s about smiles not numbers. The longer the 370Z was in production it seemed to get slower. So will this new 400HP Z get you back to the numbers that the 370 delivered in 2009-2012? It doesn’t matter it’s a dance partner and enjoyable to drive!! Now give us your 40K and don’t forget to add MSRP mark up, fees and other expenses for a total of 60K. Hopefully they don’t have clutch issues for the first three model years on the manual option like like time…
Early today
BTW I'm first
the design is perfect but the engine is shit
