Catholicism and Catholic-adjacent regimes are the thing which patronized artists as a form of conscription; that is to say that anyone creating art outside the permission of the Church was essentially deemed heretic. All Western art is the result of artists *surviving* the creative suppression necessary for Christians throughout history to keep firm the power of their theological polity.
