This is amazing. Monica is amazing. Its a mind-blowing experience thinking that V was just a teen here and so fast around the court. Monica will always be my favourite.
Yes, she was putting no leg into her forehands in her early days. And because she was muscling the shots, they were often landing mid-court. Things really turned around for Venus during the summer of 2000 as she was putting way more leg into her groundstrokes.
Good match and highlights..these fast hardcourts favoured Venus but on a slower surface and a slightly faster /fitter Monica I would like her chances ..but Venus was the better player on this occasion
The game had passed Seles with all the big hitters and great movement players. Had she not been stabbed and stayed in shape and developed a few other areas in her game she could have been a competitive player through the 90’s and walked away with 15 or more GS Titles.
let s be honest. if she was so great she would have come back and dominated the tour after the stabbing.. But she wasnt..her power was match and surpassed. Her movement average.Never elvoved or changed. Could never win wimbledon, the most pretigious slam. BARELY beat graf on clay.
Seles could have picked up 2 more Grandslams had she been committed to getting in shape. She can tag with power and control. Her movement and stamina was the only thing that held her back
I always expected she would eventually get bigger, even before the stabbing I predicted that. She never had the best eating habits which she loved to speak about even in the press, and avoided the gym, and that was always going to change her body once she became and adult. Particularly as she had not found a gym alternative yet (walking which she later learnt she loved, but not until her 30s).
I wish they had played each other at the French open and US open 1997 but the two most unlikable players of the tour - Tauziat and Spirlea - ruined the fun ^^
I hated Tauziat, but I liked Spirlea. Except for her antics in the 97 US Open semis vs Venus, which smacked of racism, or atleast poor sportsmanship, but atleast until that match and her behavior in it I liked her, and enjoyed her game.
@@jujumusique1305 I remember Richard saying she was lucky it was Venus and not Serena, as Serena would have decked her. And I believe that. And Spirlea is crazy enough she would have tried that against Serena too, so she is lucky. I do think it was almost karma after that she wound up losing even after having match point, and Venus coming up with that miracle shot, and that her career tanked after that.
Certain players weee a bad match up against Monica after the stabbing ..her movement was never the same though in 98 she had made progress on her fitness but still was no where close to her peak fitness ..Venus hit too hard and could get to shots most women could not cover and Monica on the flip side could not cover wide balls …if only we saw a fit faster Monica playing the new generation..she would have had more success I believe as she had beaten all the players in 2001-2002 when in much better shape …Venus was really fantastic from 98-2003 then she dropped off her best level
Monica should have won this, every time she attacks the Venus forehand gets a short ball. Venus was far from her best in 98, these first matches should have gone Monica’s way

Fastest woman to ever play tennis. Simply amazing.
This is such a great find
So glad Venus forehand improved considerably from those early days

Venus was sending bombs for serves.

Seles really needed to get in better shape and she would’ve still been a huge contender for at least 5 more years

Did my Queen fall and still win the point. Queen V was on point!!
Monica could handle the power, but just not fit enough,if she was about 15lbs lighter.I am a huge seles fan and loved her from 1989.

@@ChristianMoffet quite the same I must say. But that ship sailed for me during that USO 97 semi. This was absolutely disgraceful.

@@ChristianMoffet venus handled this with class. Just pretended this was accidental and moved on.
@@jujumusique1305 Bigtime. And she was just a young kid at the time, making it even more impressive.
the era of the french plaits
this early version of Venus almost looks like a dude dressed up like a jamaican girl.

Venus' serve was too much for her.
