Did y’all hear the type of year 2002 was for Venus Williams? 7 titles won, she reached the finals 10/13 tournaments she played that year coming into the US Open! Pheww what a LEGEND!!! Her game was impeccable 🤍
I remember thinking that Venus would become the dominant player out of the two sisters. Too bad she couldn't really keep up with Serena later on, that would have been quite an interesting rivalry.
oo oo I agree. Venus severely underrated as a tactical player, much more spin on her shots now-days and higher balls during the rallies. She has really worked hard on her game it it actually has changed more than Serena’s. Compare her strokes here to 2009 to 2019, such different production. Her FH used to be a liability, now it’s her big weapon. Wish her serve could come around though, but she has been working on a kick serve in the 2019-2020 seasons
There would be no Serena without Venus Williams! -Serena Williams Venus need more admiration. Helped get women equal prize money and 1st African American #1 tennis player 🎾
We're only publishing all American matches on USTA. However, we're publishing other classic matches on the US Open channel. We'll see if we can publish that game there though as it was an epic match!
Many of Monica Seles's unforced errors are due to the fact that she does not bend her knees enough before the stroke. She shoots them nearly standing up, in a rather rigid pose. Especially those easy shots that end up into the net that should normally sail easily over. Already when she was a youngster, her dad who coached her from the very first day, kept reminding her of the vital importance of bending her knees more. Here we never see her hitting a ground stroke totally crouched, nearly sitting on her heels. Many of the top players of her age are able to hit in that extreme crouching position, totally relying on thigh strength. Same laziness in her serve. In this match, you can see it clearly, she barely benefits from the spring effect of bending her knees and then catapulting upward. She is relying mostly on shoulder and upper body strength, and not mobilizing the energy from deeper flexion and explosive extension of legs. Simply compare with the other top-ranked players of her time, Serena, and Venus, of course. When you look at her whole career, it seems that Seles worked intensively from the start as a child at hitting her balls against the wall as hard as she could. That is how she developed her style of extremely hard and very fast strokes, taking the ball very early and leaving no recovery time to the opponent, a style that took the whole world of tennis by surprise. And this continuous practice tremendously strengthened the key muscles of her shoulder and upper body, front and back. This upper body muscular strength Monica Seles retained all through her tennis life, up to 2003, when she quit competition and the tour at age 29, as her feet were collapsing from the burden of her weight. But during all those years, she never put any emphasis on developing her legs' strength, and even more importantly, leg endurance. Nowhere does she mention going out for a run for fun and happiness, for an hour or two. For her running was a drudgery and remained so. And getting close to a treadmill was pure anathema to her. We can't blame her for this profound dislike of the sterile and deadening exercise of the treadmill. But she never acquired a taste for the Swedish fartleck approach, running outside on meadows, in forests, on the beach, as a natural fun activity, oxygenating her brain and reconnecting with nature. This might have taken care of her so-called obsessive "demons" for sure, including taming her junk food compulsion. During all those travels around the world, Seles never mentions the temptation of going out of her home or hotel for a run and relaxation. For her the real and only fun was in hitting balls, period. Running was "cardio", another part of all the detested artificial workouts. Even as a brilliant teenager she didn't have any special leg athleticism and endurance. Compare with the bounciness, springiness, and mobility of Steffi Graf or Martina Navratilova during their matches. Here, compare with the marvelous ebullient athleticism of Venus or Serena. And Seles's neglect of leg fitness only grew worse with age. The outcome being that, without this leg endurance, she could not hope to last three long sets playing at the peak of her powers. 3-setters always meant big trouble, exhausting her and draining her of the remnants of energy. Even here, we can see how her lack of leg power degrades the quality of her ground strokes and undermines her ability to play the whole match on top gear.
in order for seles to win a slam between 2000 and 2003 she would have to go either through at least Hingis, Davenport, serena and venus whom she had a losing record against all. She could beat one of them but highly unlikely that she had to just beat one of them to win a slam. for example 2002 aussie open. she beat venus but fell to hingis. I truly believe that she had continued through to 2004 and healthy she could have won roland garros or even US open. the 2002 form would have won slams in 2004 and venus and serena were not the same players. Hingis had retired and Davenport had some injuries and confidence issues. Monica did well with mid level players like Myskina, Capriati (in 2004 her fitness and mental strength were suspect) Dementieve, Mauresmo. winning head to head against clijsters and Henin
She had lost her last 2 matches to Henin, and Henin would get a ton better from spring 2003 onwards to what she was in 2002/early 2003. Seles was also going to be 30 and counting. She was not going to be beating Henin often from that point forward even in a best case scenario. Not likely Clijsters either, unless it were a slam final where Clijsters would probably give away the match like usual. Those others? Maybe (minus Capriati) but again she was going to turn 30 in 2003 and back then that was old and decline was certain health or not. Tennis was not like today where people stay competitive to way into their 30s, that never happened then.
Henin was nowhere near as good in 2001 and 2002 as 2003. Henin had won her last 3 matches with Seles, and this was still before when she was about to start winning slams and really hit her prime. I don't see an older Seles beating her at this point, atleast not often. Clijsters was also much improved starting in 2003. As for Seles in 2004 she would be turning 31, and tennis was not like today with people excelling into their 30s so whether she would be capable of even her 2001-2002 level is questionable.
This matchup drove me crazy. Seles refused to step back from the baseline to give herself some room for Venus’ incredible depth. She refused to adjust. Insanity. When she would start to catch on and move back, she won most of the rallies. I’m the early nineties, she played a bit more behind the baseline and moved so much better, so much more consistent w her strokes. Would have been a much more interesting matchup if seles don’t focus on trying to hit a winner immediately and staying inside the baseline. No need for that. Beating Venus then was getting her into rallies and moving her around to draw errors. Seles only did that one - Australia 2002. In that match she moved back behind the baseline and they had such an amazing match
I would like to see Mónica with 17, 18, 19 years old. Invincible. This wasn't Mónica Seles. This was Seles after terrorist attack. Another Seles totally diferentt.
I want to mute all the commentators. So anti- Williams. They despise the fact the Williams are God's gift to tennis. It's funny-The haters have no idea they help the Williams to greatness. Go Williams!!!
This was not typical Monica… even for 2002 Monica this was subpar. I would guess she has some injury or at least not at prime fitness. Earlier that year she beat Venus in AO and later that year she also did well in the WTA final. Of course it would be difficult for Monica to beat a prime Venus even on her best day. Still… this was awful to watch as a Monica fan…
QuiSnJoe Reed Actually I’m sure she’s well outside the top 50 now. Dropped out of the top 10 quite awhile ago. But having said that, I think she should still be playing. She has the game and the desire to keep playing, so why not??

Her 2000 season was better.
The only finals she lost were Grand Slams to her sister the GOAT.

Venus is the bomb.com! Boom!💥💣💥
@@Apanblod she developed an autoimmune disease "Sjogren's Syndrome" that has limited her athleticism
Gosh, can you imagine if Venus had the technique she has now but in 2002? Dannnnggg the domination that would have ensued. lol

The Williams sisters dominated this era. But also for Monica Seles later in her career to still be making a Quarterfinal at a G.S. is very impressive.
She reached the QF of all GS that year

Venus you know you were doing it! Good game ladies. 🎾🎾🎾
Anyone noticed Venus wore two different types of earrings? Her outfit looks amazing, too!

Wow. That is really insightful. I am also a tennis player that is often admonished by my coach to "bend the knees more" lol.
Monica Seles use to take the ball so early, wow!
She was such a better player that this matches shows but credit to Venus she was in her prime here Monica not so much ..thanks for posting the match

That is Kathy Rinaldi
Sometimes I watch the tennis matches, but I turn the volume all the way down on my phone when the commentators get on my nerves. 🤣😂🤣
That’s one of the worst matches I’ve seen Seles play...

Saying a female player could be fitter is basically saying she could stand to lose 10 pounds.
Monica played sooo bad!
Venus is old now- she blew Wimbledon 2017- she should retire, granny cannot win another Grand Slam, unless Jehovah does a miracle!
Why should she retire? Venus sponsors her own tennis clothing...and she loves the game.. I say stay as long as you're still having fun... Live life..
She’s “old”and still in the top 5. She loves what she is doing why should she retire??
Say who ? Your opinion doesn’t matter !
