I waited for this to come out as a single thirty years ago so I could buy it. It never did. I loved this in 1984-85 it was (And still IS) such a great dance song!!
Well, it sort of did...it was released as the B-side to the Angel 12-inch single in North America in 1985. In many countries outside North America it was released as an A-side single though. And yes, it's definitely a classic! :)
sonicboy19 Oh I never knew that. You said it was on a 12" single? Are you saying it was on an album? Wasn't it ever released on a small 45 like most of her other records of the day? I never understood why it wasn't?
Well it's a bit of a long story...but here goes. No, Into The Groove wasn't released on a 7" single (aka a 45) and was not included on any LP/album in North America in 1985 (although it was later included on her You Can Dance remix compilation album in 1987). A 12" single is an LP-sized record that was usually a few dollars more expensive than a 7" single, usually containing extended/dance remixes and dub versions of the featured song, along with a b-side, and most at that time were played at 45 rpm, just like a 7" single. In the US and Canada, the Angel 12" contained an extended dance remix of Angel on side A and Into The Groove on side B. The 7" for Angel featured Angel (Album Version) on side A and Angel (Remix/Edit) on side B. The reason her label Sire/Warner chose not to release Into The Groove as a proper A-side single in North America is because they feared over-saturating the market with too many Madonna singles in too short a time. They were mainly focused on promoting the Like A Virgin album at the time, plus the Vision Quest soundtrack had just been released with Crazy For You becoming a #1 hit just after Material Girl had peaked at #2, and with more single releases from Like A Virgin already set for release, there simply wasn't a window of time to release Into The Groove, and since it wasn't featured on an album (which were the real bread and butter for record companies, not singles), they didn't want to risk losing the momentum of sales for her Like A Virgin album in order to promote a stand-alone single. So Warner instead decided to include Into The Groove as the b-side to the Angel 12", in order to further promote sales of that single. Although Into The Groove was not serviced to radio in North America (it was even excluded from the promotional 12" copies of Angel because they didn't want to give stations the option of playing it instead of Angel), stations had to go out and buy the commercial 12" of Angel in order to play the song, which is exactly what many of them ended up doing (which is something that rarely happens since they usually receive free promotional copies from record companies). Since it was not released as a single in its own right, Into The Groove was ineligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 even with the substantial airplay it received. Had it been released as a proper single, it could have became her third #1 US single at the time. Angel, on the other hand, had to settle for a peak of #4. But its 12" single, due to its inclusion of Into The Groove, ended up being the first 12" single in history to be certified Gold (for shipment of over one million copies at the time). In Europe, singles moved up and down the charts at a much quicker pace than in North America...therefore with less risk of over-saturating the market, Warner decided to release Into The Groove as a proper single in Europe in between her other releases, and it became Madonna's first #1 hit in the UK. They also released a second Madonna single from the Vision Quest soundtrack, Gambler, a few months later in Europe (and not in North America for the same reason). Hope that answers your question (if you have time to read it all! lol). ;)
I knew there had to be some kind of explanation for this. I heard it on the radio in the mid 1980's and danced my nights away to it with people I knew then, now long gone. I went looking to buy it like I bought her other songs, but I could never find it. I loved the era and Madonna's music that has survived through the decades Thank you so very much for taking "time" to explain this to me. (I waited thirty years to hear it) LOL.
This version of “Into The Groove” is the best. Love the way the 5-note piano riff is amplified and it works well with the simpler drum machine beat and Madonna’s vocals. We need an HQ stereo version of it released ❤ maybe for the 40th anniversary of “Like A Virgin”?
One of my favorite movies and will always be a bomb song by Madonna! I LOVE IT! 80's baby to the fullest!!! & music with real meaning is the greatest! #foreverAMadonnaFan!!
I quit! I bow out. One of my top four Madonna songs. This song gave the movie Desperately Seeking that xtra charge. One of Madonna's best; great movie that complemented it. *****
Cyndi Lauper's fashion style was completely different from Madonna's. Cyndi wore a lot of loud, clashing colours with hair to match, whereas Madonna's style tended to be simpler and more toned down. The only real common thread was the overload of bracelets & necklaces, and these came from Madonna's friend Maripol who designed them and owned a shop in NYC. Madonna & Cyndi shared an adventurous and independent use of fashion which led to comparisons at the time, but they were each very unique.
Very true... I thought it was a Rumor. No, no rumor. Good thing Cyndi loves The Queen. I have seen several videos on RUclips on this subject. "Where Cyndi was CUTE, Madonna was about Sex... Her every movement DRIPPED of Sex" LOL!!
The circumstances that led to this version in the ending credit, Thank God they happened. Otherwise we would have never heard it. All this time we thought it was intentional.
I NEED THIS VERSION OF THE SONG IN MP3, anyone know where i could buy/download it? and i dont mean the version from celebration or immaculate collection. i mean this one!? PLS
This is on the Like A Virgin album - side 2 first song... wore out 3 tapes. She re-released her first album and called it Madonna First Album... You Can Dance - I also had that tape. Americans where against it but everyone wanted me to play when I visited. Funny.
This movie is so fricking funny..Especially when in an altered state. The scene where Roberta messes with Gary, the hot tub salesman is priceless. And I always liked Aidan Quinn, the actor. He seems like a really cool man. @ telenovelas: the bass IS more noticeable( it sounds deeper /richer ) ; quite a lot of times the fricking studio execs ( the artisitic /creative KILLERS ) ruin the movie /tv show /music /sound tracks /recordings because the song/album /movie/episode,etc., tested negatively(read doesn't fit the studio Executives expectations/aspirations for that particular project. I used to date one of the top entertainment attorneys ( based in LA) and the crap that goes on behind the scenes is total BS! No wonder a lot of the artists/creative/talent community can't stand some of edicts the studio execs throw at them.
Wrong. Madonna wrote and recorded it with Stephen Bray. It was supposed to be recorded by Cheyne but Madonna decided to keep it for herself to use in Desperately Seeking Susan. Cheyne never recorded it.
Yes, it's the unmastered demo version that is used in the movie - and judging from the lo-fi quality of the mix, I would be willing to bet that the actual source used is a cassette copy of the demo. Given that the film featured a monaural soundtrack, its use of an unfinished demo tape is actual quite fitting. Aside from the more obvious structural variation in the last half, the differences between the demo mix and the final, mastered mix that was commercially released are subtle but still quite noticeable to anyone familiar with both versions.
+noemistephanie93 I think the bass is more noticeable on the final version and you can clearly hear that this demo came from a tape 'cause the sound isn't very clear.
The role worked for Madonna since she was basically playing herself. Madonna is a great talent but she's never excelled in roles that were not essentially playing herself. She's too "Madonna" for that. Serves her well in most of her career..acting not so much
although the movie was awfully bad, but that days when Madonna cares about nothing but creating amazing music. now she is nothing but another woman who fights with other women stating i am the best while none of them even near "fair".
This is the only version of the song to listen to. They just butchered the single by making it tinny and crisp, then You Can Dance was worse, and the Immaculate Collection version, ugh! THIS version should have been the single.
1980-1989 = Madonna at her absolute musically creative peak. Personally, with Justify and Bedtime, man... Quality dropped a bit. With Ray of Light... Madonna doesn't exist to me anymore! Techno BS. I know that musicians have to evolve their sound and music... With Ray, she WENT TOO FAR
I mean, you listen to this song, and consider LaV and True Blue, she made it. Those are big shoes to feel, esp when also heading into the next decade. Prince and Michael changed too going into the 90s. New Edition, well they grew up. She hit hard with Erotica but still, it wasn't the 80s anymore. Frozen was a very different sound, yes, but to call it trash is a bit of a reach.
essie finch oh so 80'S indeed ! this was a mediocre film at best but basically introduced Madonna to mainstream audiences and the song is just such a sweet pill from the 80'S[ I'M JUST REPEATING MYSELF NOW] anyhow ENJOY THE AFTERNOON!!
i remember seeing this movie in the theater and was glued to madonna whenver she was on the screen.
She was good.☺️
Is it just me or is this even better than the album version.
God i love this track so much! Madonna was, is, and will always be THE BEST!!!!
One of the greatest club hits ever! Still a great dance song! If this doesn’t get you going, forget it! 😎👏🏻👌🏻
The BEST version of this song!

sonicboy19 There was a rerelease of her Like a virgin album just before her TrueBlue album was released that included Into the groove...
This version of “Into The Groove” is the best.

ALLGENRES .COM please if you know the name of the partner of madonna at the club, will be very thank full.

Looks like Johnny O but most likely not him. And yes, us Latinos have the flavor and rhythm
Genial
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG AND MADONNA!!!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA QUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was originally recorded by CHEYNE "Call Me Mr. Telephone", but Madonna demanded that she have it right before Cheyne's version was released.
Wrong. Madonna wrote and recorded it with Stephen Bray. It was supposed to be recorded by Cheyne but Madonna decided to keep it for herself to use in Desperately Seeking Susan. Cheyne never recorded it.

+noemistephanie93 I think the bass is more noticeable on the final version and you can clearly hear that this demo came from a tape 'cause the sound isn't very clear.
Martim Albuquerque hm ok

John Iii and to further add Rosanna Arquette was reportedly furious that Madonna was stealing all the scenes !!
+John Iii so boring, that's just what everyone says and you're just repeating it. And it's no true. Madonna wasn't Susan.
bodylanguage70 everyone says it because it's true
la femme la plus puissante du monde

totalement d'accord la plus belle et la plus incroyable
although the movie was awfully bad, but that days when Madonna cares about nothing but creating amazing music. now she is nothing but another woman who fights with other women stating i am the best while none of them even near "fair".

NO, NOT JELLYBEAN BENITEZ
ALLGENRES .COM so who is the guy she is dancing with???

Ahhhhhhhhh.....nahhhh...never mind...HAHAHAHAHAAH LMAO
This is the only version of the song to listen to. They just butchered the single by making it tinny and crisp, then You Can Dance was worse, and the Immaculate Collection version, ugh! THIS version should have been the single.
Rosanna Arquette was hotter than Madonna but Madonna was streetwise.
I love this song but this isn't a demo, it's the same song just with the movie clip in front of it
John Olbrias No, it’s not. This version sound incomplete and not as synthy as the released version.
With Ray, she WENT TOO FAR
tf are you talking about the 90's were her peak creativity & Ray of Light is a fantastic album. techno bs my ass
