From the early 80's until the mid-90's, Madonna had the most recognizably unique voice in pop music. This song highlights that incredible voice. Until the EVITA voice lessons changed her voice, Madonna's natural voice had managed to sell over 200 million albums worldwide. Becoming the biggest selling female recording artist in history on a supposedly limited and meager range seems the most ironic of them all huh?
@Roxy Roxbury was it released before she became a star? This sounds familiar to me like something that I heard in skating rinks in the early 80s I love it...I like the R/B style that Madonna has in her singing.
@Raymond Nolan Scott This song might sound familiar because some of the lyrics from Stay (Like A Virgin album) are in this song. She had 2 demos called Don’t You Know and Stay that formed the final version of Stay from her Like A Virgin album.
@@fomalhauto I'm coming to the party late, but part of the reason why she didn't release these songs was because at the time, she was embroiled in a legal battle with her former manager Camille Barbone. Madonna felt she was being taken down a musical path she did not want to go, (and they STILL hadn't delivered on the promise to Madonna to snag a record deal) so the songs made during that time were the legal property of Barbone's company. This song was part of the path Madonna was trying to take at the time and that's why they sound raw.. she was sneaking into a recording studio at night and laying the tracks down. And it really was a "f-ck you, I'm gonna start all over and on my own". As soon as Stephen Bray came to New York, I think that's when Madonna saw the light and such..and well, the rest is history.. :) As for her first album.. oy.. the control the execs wanted over Madonna's image, musicality and what songs would be on the album was intense.
This is a really marvelous track. I know it can totally be worked on more and tweaked, but I love and am fully satisfied by the simplicity of this original version. I love the combination of R&B, funk, electronic, and live band element. Really an amazing track.
I knew the words after a couple of listens. I found myself screaming the song at the top of my lungs and dancing like a maniac. I glanced out of the window to find the neighbors staring in utter confusion, and perhaps a little curiosity.
This song proves that Madonna made the right choice in choosing to be a recording artist! I love how she plays rhythm guitar and she is versatile. For example, she sings This Used to be My Playground, Oh, Father, Cherish, La Isla Bonita, Words, Borderline, Bedtime Story, Live to Tell,Vogue, etc, and the list goes on.
That is so sad that her mama whom she is named after did not live to see her grow or blossom ir sparkle and make it to where she is now. I am so sorry she lost her mama at only 5 years old right before Christmas of 1963 almost 60 years ago. That must have been terrifying for poor Madonna.
This gives me "Desperately seeking Susan" Vibes... A sister to into the groove. Madonna definitly should remaster the vocals and intruments and release it on her upcoming biopic Soundtrack along with other unrealesed demos :-)
Bellissima Floriana Madonna ai tempi di like a Virgin nel 1984 quando portava i capelli come i tuoi, i fiocchi in testa che portavi tu da bambina e le collane di perla che metteva la nonna Cristina

I heard the demo of Stay '81 and now I am searching and listening to all her early outtakes and demos. This is pretty cool. I just really her early sound and energy. I saw a photo of a young Madonna and she looked so gorgeous
I agree totally. If I'm not mistaken she was heavy into the underground New York Club scene and they were on some Funk/Euro-synth style production. If it were not for the title I would have guessed this song came out about 1982. This sound was about 2 years from going mainstream. IMHO.

I use to fell the same about artists b-sides and how I like some and wonder why it’s not in the album. Being in the music business now, There’s a couple of reasons why they aren’t. Demos are done to seek interest and investors form record labels. Once they are signed they hire producers to make new songs. Very rarely they will use your old demos and work on those to studio standards and release it unless it’s an independent record label and they have faith in your artistry. But big labels usually want to add their input or give you a style or have a vision for you and want a fresh sound based on what they liked from you if their putting money into the album. If they get a producer to want to work on your old demo that happens sometimes too. When they complete a bunch of new demos and songs for the album, the producers, artist and executives go through the songs and determine what makes it on the album and in what order. After debates, objections and opinions....they give it a more polishes studio sound. After they see what song will be released as the first single. This is crucial as it will make the artist or not and gain attention. They also consider if the single is worthy enough for remixes, club okay, Dj’s, radio and promos. When they select the songs for the album the record label generally chooses the number of track listing and provides the funds for it. If they include more it costs more as well as they consider the money spent on getting the songs made and by which producer. They also need to consider not having too many “fillers” in the album which are songs that don’t have much substance or fans would rather skip or doesn’t grow on them. They also want the album diverse and not sound too repetitive in sound and style but during this process generally all involved have different opinions of what they like and not and share ideas and debate. They also worry about having too many songs and boring the listener and songs not standing on its own. It generally sounds like a good idea to pack a record to get more than you pay for but an “album” especially a debut, they prefer it to be special and be memorable and the track listing to flow well with each song and the song up next plus they don’t want to reward the consumer too much with freebies compared to how much it cost the company so 10-12 songs are the usual number. they then leave some songs that they scrapped from the album as a a possible addition on single releases. When they choose the first song to be released as a single before the albums release date, they consider the songs that did not make it on the album as the flip side of the record calling it the b-side. Even though songs are later on made unto tapes and cds ...they still call it a b-side. If the b-side is good enough they release it in the main country’s release or opt for having remixes of the single if they produced any instead. Leaving b-sides for singles and ep’s and promos that will be released in other countries instead of here like Japan or Europe. These later turn into collector items but they want the b-sides mainly to not over shadow the single. Generally the b-side are not good enough for the album but good enough for release on a single. The b-sides are typically very different in style of the rest of the songs or the single being released and they prefer it released in another country if that’s the case. Sometimes the record label in another countries division have different tastes and the b-side or even single is a different song than the main country targeted. A lot of the other songs left, if any, are then forgotten or put away by the label as they own it. In the future they release them in compilations and promos if the artist gets famous and thus making fans search and spend more money for them and hypes the artists and keeps fans on the artist like we are doing on RUclips searching for them and being released on compilations like pre-Madonna. Most of the time many songs don’t see the light of day. But the main reason songs aren’t included in the album is because the sound doesn’t flow well with the rest of the albums style and sound.
Madonna’s early unreleased music is some of her best material
Bring the 80's Madonna back......Please.....

But Evita voice lessons gave us her Ray Of Light voice, that's considered the best vocals of her career.
This song was made in 1979... or some unreleased rock punk songs from 1979 check them out
She had a voice of an angel
Her voice transitioned on bedtime stories
Madonna knew what she was doing, that's for sure. This is very good, excellent song. She might have been a little bit ahead of the curve.
Why wasn't this song ever released? It's a hit!
@Roxy Roxbury
was it released before she became a star?

WOW! This has a really funky 70's sound to it. I kinda wish we would have heard more 70's soul sounds from her! that would have been cool!
she has songs from the 70s

She should get back with Stephen Bray in the studio and get back to this sound - we fell in love with it, so keep it coming!!!
it was released on a cd called pre-madonna, still easy to find
I'm french and in my opinion Madonna is the queen of pop
Omg. This sound. It brings it all back ❤️❤️❤️

Omg you cracked me up
Madonna has that ability to hook you into her songs. Truly amazing.
Great talent right from the start.True Queen of Pop!100%
