Yesterday, I thought... I'll just give Land of the Lustrous a little look... and... I ended up watching the entire thing. And, then have been suggesting it to everyone I can.
"This 3D shit looks weird asf," is what I had once said when viewing Houseki no Kuni for the first time, ready to mock it's premiere then move on to better anime. I'd never been a fan of CGI anime; I'd always be the first to take up torches and pitchforks against the cancer that was lazy 3D in my precious 2D anime. But as I watched on, I couldn't help but marvel at the elegance of the Houseki no Kuni's visuals, the way light refracted off translucent hair, its use of camera work, the purposefully uncanny appearance of the Lunarians and the shocking amount of expressiveness in the gems' movements and on their faces; it shattered my anti-3D tinted glasses and made a CGI show of all things my most beautiful looking show of 2017. I'm not sure if the quality of Japanese 3D TV will improve from now on but Houseki no Kuni is a gem that makes the idea of visually appealing 3D CGI anime a tangible reality.
I think it’s increasingly obvious that 3d cg is best when used in conjunction with 2d, i think that’s why this and studio khara have the most impressive looking cg animation.
Have you guys seen Paperman? It implements the best parts of 2D and 3D animation to create something beautiful. I think rotoscoping will play a major role in the future of animation.
Eh. I still think Yukikaze is still the best looking 2D+3D anime that every anime should look up to, and that anime was from 2002 and it impressively still looks far better than any 3D anime nowadays. How good the renders looked or not tho, my most gripe with 3D anime today is that there seems to be this mindset among anime directors that 3D anime equals "I can do action scenes with "insane" one-shot camera movements now!", which usually looks jarring, obnoxious, confusing, and often cheap-looking. Like, they completely throws away their Directing101 like wide-shots, trackings, etc. Which is why i didn't see this one because i saw a clip of it's action scene and i was shocked at how on it's one-shot action sequence the camera managed to zoom-in-and-out on the character *within miliseconds.* And the jarring one-shots just makes my edit-instincts screaming, "..... and cut....... and cut! ......... CUT!".
Just like the Iron Giant where it all started, mixing 2D and 3D together I think is the best way. All the best stuff comes the combination of the two styles.
I was wondering "Will people still take me seriously after I use this?" for so long whilst I edited it. In the end, I thought "Screw it, it's worth it". Even if this video does get demonetized for it, still absolutely worth it.
This and made in abyss for me were some of the most creative animes of 2017 that were not only stunning, but backed up with amazing stories, voice acting and OST's. They're both easily AOTY for me, and i'm so glad you did a video on this very underappreciated show. It's such a shame that amazon had the both of them, because if they had been on say, crunchyroll for example, they may have gotten more recognition, something they definitely deserved more of. Here's hoping they'll do a season 2, the manga itself could perhaps have enough content for another season within a year, so I hope Orange take the opportunity to enhance and grow with their skill on the combination of 3d/2d animation and bring us an even more stunning season 2.
"[...] he directed and animated this video of two t-rexes fucking". Wait, what?? HAHAHAHAHA Seriously now, Land of the Lustrous was the biggest surprise this last season for me. I wasn't expecting anything from it, but, oh boy, am I glad I watched it! The CG was terrific, and I loved the anime itself. One of my favorites in 2017 for sure. Gonna read the manga now.
Im just gonna tell you guys that Studio Orange will animated a cg anime called Beastars that will come out in fall 2019. The manga itself was underrated, but it has won several awards beating the promised neverland and the story was SOOOOO GOOD . I just hope who ever read this will give it a chance to check it out...
Well, the gentleman has achieved his dream with me. I didn't really like 3D animation in anime. I liked bubuki buranki, but the story got a bit boring later. Land of the Lustrous completely changed my thoughts on 3D anime Not only was the story the best ever, but the animation was epic This anime is what let me give a second chance to 3D anime
as a artist/animation junkee, you and scribble kibble are my favorite channels, your material goes so against the grain of almost all art related channels i've seen. never stop being you! ^ ^
On top of the incredible animation, it is one of the most compelling stories I have seen and it’s sad that there is no season 2 after they ended it off at the beginning of the best arc this series has.
And this is why these "fans" are so insufferable. Any change in the style of the current format, and they go after the director's life. Disregarding a CG show, just because it's CG, is the most stupid thing I've heard.
And this is good. But this should NOT be used as an excuse to disregard experimentations and boundary pushing. Remaining stagnant is death of an artform.
I agree To me, they're just like ToonEGuy, a traditional animation fantard who is a rabid hater of CG animation with a shallow hate towards CG animated films, let alone Disney ones like Frozen and Big Hero 6. I think this is where I find the notion where anime fans' stigma against 3DCG animation and be obsessed with 2D animation similar to ToonEGuy's behavior. Sure, not all people use CG as a reason and instead use legit reasons to hate anime like BBKBRNK, Berserk, Transformers RID 2015, or Knights of Sidonia. I love 2D animation as well, but I don't treat it as superior to CGI like most of the CG haters. (Same with adult animation since Sausage Party is the only american CG animated film for adults when the majority of adult animated films are 2D animated such as The Breadwinner and the Simpsons Movie)
good plot. amazing animation. beautiful osts. awesome, unique, complex opening music and animation. overall, a masterpiece. a truly grand work that a studio made for a single anime series.
Just watched Beastars and was thoroughly disturbed, but I was crazy impressed by the QUALITY of the animation, I had no idea Studio Orange specialized in CGI until today, and it makes sense now that I know they made Land of the Lustrous. But damn I was BLOWN away
I bet a lot of the same people saying "all CG is shit" simultaneously hold the opinion that "guns aren't evil just because they kill people", and that's honestly the most depressing part: we have people rational enough to realize that the misuse of something doesn't make it completely bad...turning around to say that all CG is bad, always, forever, just because it's been misused in the past. Like, you can hate all CG and call it a cancer or whatever, but why the antagonistic attacks on anyone who _does_ like Houseki's animation? Half the anti-CG comments read like "stop liking things I don't like", and it's just plain immature at best.
I like how the CG really helped to give the impression that these characters truly are solid objects, and the sound design with all the little clinks and scrapes really complemented the CG.
This video made me watch Houseki no Kuni. As a RWBY fan, I was hooked on this idea of a #D anime that was full of amazing fight sequences and behold, Canipa Effect delivered.
I already knew Houseki no Kuni was a great show, but I want to take a moment to appreciate the amount of research you've done into the topic. This is the first video I saw from you and it is definitely amazingly well put together. Liked and subscribed
Just finished watching this, and remembered Canipa made a video about it a while back... and damn, can I not agree more to the video! let's hope for a season 2
having watched this video and the video of Beastars, I noticed that you like Dimension W's OST, which I was impressed in the first place to hear it since the only resemblance with Land of the Lustrous is having Fujisawa Yoshiaki as the same composer. Because of that detail, and a little bit of the high quality and in-depth analysis in your videos, you gained a new sub. Keep it up ;)
i still remember that one 4chan thread when the anime was announced. land of the lustrous, kingdom of gems, nation of rocks, capital of boulders, continent of stones, city of gravel...
The less it looks like 3D the better. And I think the origin of the "stiffness" in 3D is the the lack of stretch and squash seen everywhere in traditional animation.
I think one of the reasons fans aren’t willing to accept 3D anime is actually pretty simple. Anime is some of the only 2D animation in the world. That makes it unique. Give it charm.
Then they need not worry. This show in particular benefits from 3D as animating the texture of gems in 2D wouldn't have worked out. The character expressions and action scenes still have 2D roots which are why I think it still has the charm of 2D anime. I mean, look at that Naruto run! It's beautiful!
Same! Scared I won't be able to keep it up, since I'm always so goddamn busy, but I'm trying! I didn't leave the house once whilst I was making this one.
I hate how cg characters move and how the frame rate feels there are times where it works but i have never seen an anime that can make it look good the entire show
Land of the lustrous' anime is one of my favourites ever. But one of the things that helps it reach the incredible heights it does is the beautifully written story of the mangaka Haruko Ichikawa. Please, if you have already or watch the anime and enjoy it, go and read the manga. The story only gets deeper and more impressive as you read
wait wait wait... THEIR OWN REFRACTIVE INDEXES?! now, i guess for diamond was pretty obvious, but everyone else too? i paused the video, i swear if you say they are made to be as close as to the real life gems i'm going to lose my shit. ok, lost it only for half, they did studdy thee reflection on the shouldeers at least, and that's a great part off why volume 4's cover is possibly the best one.
No wonder the action scenes were awesome. You have not only Naruto's Action scene creator, you have a master camera cinematographer, and lastly a dedicated director.
I don't hate fully 3D models because they are not 2D, I hate them because the face expression are more close to a real life robot than a human being. The idea to first draw the faces in 2D then remake them in 3D was brilliant, and it's what made this anime a masterpiece (of course, with all other great things this anime has done)
Ive mostly been off put by 3d now because of those reasons + that it has seemed to push the beauty that 2D also has and at first that worried me with this. Im studying both and have an appreciation for both so I watched it and while I was confused by the plot a bit, the animation switching off was really nice to see and works with the characters. Its a good balance.
I was never "against" 3D anime per say. I watched and really liked bubuki and thought it was a step in the right direction. Land of the lustrous though has done it for me. Just watching episode 10 made me say out loud "So this is the future..."

Studio Orange is now a name I'll keep an eye on

Camilo Craft Yup. Need more vitamin C in my diet.
I will only pay attention to this studio for this show
Would be perfect if they were the ones who adapted Citrus heh.
Aren't they a branch of Rough Draft Studios?
Personally, 3D CG was never a bad idea for anime, is just that most studios had not broke their bollocks to make it right.
Until now :D

to be fair though, the uncanny appearence of lunarians/seleniites it's to be given to haruko ichikawa, everything else though, on-point.
