- My analysis of and ultimate love letter to Houseki no Kuni. I apologize if this video is too much of a re-cap. My next videos will likely be a good bit shorter. I hope you enjoy this little trek back through the lands of the lustrous!

Based off of how they forgot the “fun” part of their promise to Cinnabar, I had the impression that Phos *did* forget Cinnabar, but is hiding that fact, and just put everything together based on information they got from the others.
Yikes that's brutal. That just makes it way worse.

You know that porblem with the ship where you replace one part after the other with the question if it is still the same ship or if not when did it change? It is the same with phos. At chap 93, she is way past that point. *spoiler alert* i'd say the point was when she got lapis' head.

@Suki More accurately to what I was trying to convey: It's a blessing that our internal realities don't dictate the state of external reality. Otherwise everything would be just as unstable as we are. I'm not sure about y'all, but knowing that what's inside of me isn't all there is helps me keep a proper perspective. It's kind of a hard sentiment to put into words.

I love how the show tells us that change doesn’t just happen with one major event(like in most anime). It’s a gradual proces that happens over time. And by the time we realized how much Phos actually changed and how all the small events in the story contributed to that change, it’s already too late.

@@zeroloid9762 to be honest there is still some semblance of Phos left, like "he still loves me" and their.. well.. emotional nature; the thing is that Phos has became completely unstable, they are in pain, suffering and confused
A little prompt from Cinnabar in the end was enough for Phos to remember his promise. Despite losing a third of his body some memories are too deeply rooted in him, but the fact that he couldn't possibly remember the "fun" word and even dismissed it, really broke my heart.
Also the fact that Phos stays awake working constantly to avoid thinking about Antarc. Phos' constant state of exhaustion is one of the saddest things.
If Phos is going to forget Antarc just as their promise, I swear I will kick their ass

Its pretty amazing how well you summed this up. Especially since most of these things remain so in the manga. The world doesn't get any darker by Phos's extreme actions, in fact you could argue that 90% of the characters are better off than where they started at the beginning. The world only seems to get darker because you begin to see everything from Phos's POV, which as of late has become a dark and broken one.

Oh dang you're right. How didn't I catch that? The next vids gonna have a little more stuff about the Buddhist themes. In fact, the entirety of Houseki's world operates on a Buddhist worldview which is totally rad.

This is probably the best video on Houseki no kuni I’ve seen so far.
A few things-
Ventricosus’ name is pronounced Ventri-Ko-Suss, closer to the last way you said it.
The gems are actually closer to male, since they often use masculine forms of ‘I’(Boku/Ore), and call each other he(Kare) and brother(Nii-san/Otouto/Aniki).
The series does get a *little* darker in the manga, though nothing too overbearing. I hope you cover that in a future video someday, it’s really something to behold!

It sure seems like it from what I know so far. Man that's just so tragic. We'll just have to see how things get shaken up from here on. I have a feeling she'll return to her old self in some respect. Then again I haven't gotten up to date with the manga yet, so I don't know just how crazy things are.

I just gonna say that I love the Drakengard 3's Final Song plays in the Phos's awakening, and the additional flashbacks. It made me go watch that game's story and just recently finished it.
Yeah Drakengard 3 is probably my favorite of Yoko Taro's works.
This is one of my fave houseki no kuni videos I've watched. You brought up very good points and I like you analysed phos' development and tone of the story. I hope you make a vid on the manga. Man, the story just gets darker then.

Hey thanks a lot man! This vid took like 3 months to make. Fun fact, I started it in January of 2018, but took a break and didn't finish til the later end of the year. I've dialed back on the obsessive editing since then so I can be more consistent with uploads. Sometimes I look back and think, "how the heck did I do this?" well 2 years later, the manga certainly has gotten a lot darker, but at the same time, the tone didn't change all of a sudden. everything happened for a reason, and the tone changes with phos as you see her perspective slowly change with each failure and misunderstanding. at the "darkest" moments, it actually feels like everyone deserved everything that was going to happen, except, of course, phos, who did nothing wrong to justify the treatment she got from everything and everyone in the world.

Yep, it's not clickbait if DIO was in it all along. Really I just put that in the title as a joke. I will never see the phrase "the world" in the same way now thanks to JoJo, and I imagine it's the same for like, 90% of the other folks on this planet. Well, the ones who watch anime at least.

It's "This Is What You Are" from Warframe. There's 2 versions. The one played in the video is the one that plays in the operator room. I too am terribly obsessed with Houseki. Hah!

Big sad hours
One thing I noticed that isn’t really discussed is the parallels between Antarc and Cinnabar. Both play defining roles in Phos’s life as instigators of change, they are both low hardness Gems, even lower than Phos and yet they both display great power and potential but because of their “disabilities” are consigned to a rather lonesome existence. Because Cinnabar releases a poisonous alloy, she isolates herself in the darkness, and because of Antarc’s physical structure means she can only exist during winter when everyone else usually hibernates. Because of this they both acquired some anti social qualities. They both seem to be aware of Sensei’s “relationship” with the Lunarians but still chose to treat him with love and respect which sets them apart from Phos.

In short sensei is a machine that was supposed to pray for the souls of humanity so they can pass on but after breaking and gaining sentience he can now not or can’t pray for the souls of humanity.
I covered that in some of the later vids.
It has been a long time coming wanting to watch this video. Glad it turned out fantastic. Honestly I didn't read Phos quite like that in my first watch of the show. I do see them struggling between 'wanting to change but not really', sub-conscious vs conscious sort of deal, but never fixate on both want and don't want on each conscious. Your dive gets me thinking about it again, and every examples and 'proves' you pull chronologically in the story really reinforces your read really well.
Phos might be more relatable than I initial thought they were.

This is a truly beautiful review of houseki no kuni, I didn't think it was that deep.
I see myself in phos in that I act like phos so much. Wishing that I could be what I wish to be, yet never acting to change myself. It also takes on a different view in that if you do change, you become a different person.
Maybe I should change myself, though I am also scared of change. Truly a tough decision, but maybe, just maybe I could still be myself even if I change.

being honest i relate to Phos a lot; i didn't lose any person per say, but i do relate to a lot of their issues; not just their lack of responsibility at first or not know how they got here, but also the whole.. self blame, feeling responsible for everything and basically everything else; i am up to date on the manga and somehow Phos is even more relatable as the series goes on, to the point it's both scary and saddening; on the bright side however, the most unstable point they currently have in the manga only applies to a few years ago, since then i finally managed to find some stable ground, to better myself, gain stronger conviction and sort-of find a place to some extent where i belong while having people that care for me, but i still retain semblances of all the issues i had in the past, i sometimes still feel guilty for everything or like nothing i ever do is ever good enough no matter how i try
I feel it. Those negative attributes tend to get quieter rather than go away entirely. I still battle dumb crap from years ago too on occasion. What matters is that those semblances of the past are just that. Semblances of something you've moved beyond for the most part.

This was a really really well written video. I enjoyed it a lot! At first, I didn’t like your sometimes cynical monotone voice, but as I watched more, it portrayed a depth I didn’t initially see. I’m excited to see where this channel goes. Also, thank you for mentioning where I can find this show, keep doing that for future videos. Because it has inspired me to watch Land of the Lustrous.
