FINALLY FINALLY A VISUAL ANALYSIS OF MY VISUALLY-FAVORITE MANGA THANK YOU. There is zero doubt in my mind Orange will be one of the iconic studios of this decade, not only is their approach unique and masterful, their choices for adaptations is pretty much 2 of the 4 mangas I consider 2010's masterpieces (this and Beastars) and the other 2 are Oyasumi Punpun (perhaps-unadaptable) and Jojolion (needs animes for the other parts since it's extremely metatextual, and David Pro has the rights anyway). Random edit: Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is a perfect adaptation considering their situation and no one can convince me otherwise. Brotherhood might be ultimately better, but aside from the ending they made for 2003 being perfectly congruent with the themes the manga had up to where it existed then, Edward's arc is actually better in 2003 (light and vague spoilers below). Because all Ed had to give up in the manga and BH was his alchemy, which means his "great sacrifice" was just living the way you or I do every single day. In contrast, the ending to 2003 has him recognizing there is no "equivalent exchange" for a life, since each life/person is unique and has no replacement, thus even if he gives up his own life he might not get any other life back. This is more tragic, more powerful, more insightful, AND more realistic than his endgame in the original manga or Brotherhood.

One thing I think doesn't get talked about enough in HnK is the world building. Some of the concepts Ichikawa uses for the story somehow are so fantastical and stylized and fits so perfectly with the aesthetics without ever putting too much of a strain on our suspension of disbelief. She's an incredible artist with such a unique style owing to her unique background, but man is she also one hell of a writer.
People always talk about how Land of the Lustrous made CG work in anime, but they don't talk much about how the CG contributed in the story. This analysis however explained it perfectly, and as a reader of the manga myself, I am so in love with how you explained the actions studio Orange did to perfectly capture the beauty and story of the manga. Thank you so much for this! 💗✨

At 11:30 I was thinking "nice analysis, too bad it's over already" and was about to close the video...the smooth transition to the anime part made me rather happy :D
God tier editing and analysis. They worked so well together, that it had a multiplicative effect on the overall video. Congratulations to you two! Crazy that so much content could be made just from the aesthetics. The narrative, character development and buddhist symbolism could easily make for a 30-ish minute video
You and Nies really collectively sell every single series you talk about. Such an important and oft simplified topic too, given the attention it deserves. Fantastic work.
It was a tall order, creating an anime to match the masterpiece that is the manga. Likewise a tall order, to create a video with a quality to do the material justice. Stunning success on both accounts!
The art of HnK manga is great. The art in HnK anime is great. They're both different but excel in their mediums. The manga has superb use of negative space and each page pozes with melancholy and loneliness, the likes of which I've never seen in any other manga. The CGI in the anime is leagues beyond its contemporaries and has been cited by every anime critic on what good CGI should be.
I really love how they integrate 2D animation into the series without many audience members being able to tell the difference, most people I've met say that the animation was beautiful and that they can't believe it was all CG, they're always so surprised to find out that Orange somehow managed to blend mediums. For instance, the shot of Phos lying down and Kongo putting on his gloves is almost all 2D. Basically, all the super close up shots are 2D so that the audience isn't taken out of the story when seeing (relatively) low detail 3D models super close up. edit: 22:35 is probably my favourite shot, if you look closely you can see the animation of the notebook is 2D but Cinnabar's hand is 3D, but when Cinnabar grabs the notebook, their hand quickly swaps to 2D drawn animation, it's almost unnoticeable, but absolutely beautiful nonetheless.
"Here's where their personality shines" Damn, I never took your for sliding in a pun XD Great video as always Edit 1: Kinda sad that we might not get a second season because of how season 1 is structured towards the end
@@zimzamzoom69 i have seen other anime fix stuff like that with a subsequent season tho, like blue exorcist It's just that when you're watching it all in one go it's a bit... awkward
Spoilers for after the anime ends: I hope that someone will eventually use Land of the Lustrous as an example in a video essay about birth of a villain.
Oh man, the page turn mentioned at 10:16 really hits hard. It really makes you feel Phos's shock. Thank you for this video, it was so well written and edited.
The editing of the video, showing the manga and the anime was breathtaking. I agree with every word spoken in this review. I never liked fully 3D characters until now, I even hated then when they were used in a mostly 2D anime just to cut corners and looked bad. But Orange used them to bring something unique. I can't imagine a fully 2D adaptation of Land of Lustrous being close to this, even if it was animation by a big studio like Madhouse. The way every gem had unique hair that moves differently and shows the character's feeling is beautiful. They were 100% passionate about this project and I hope they continue the story after they finish adapting Beastars. It might not be as popular as it deserves as a emotional masterpiece, which is more creative in story, settings and visual than 90% of the anime that is produced every year. In an industry full of rural isekai and urban school anime, it brings something we never saw before and something we probably won't saw again.
I totally recomend the manga, since what the anime adapted it's not even a 5% of what Houseki does after that. Basically, at that point, Houseki was a "normal" anime, but in the manga... This is totally a masterpiece. Btw, if you wanna read the manga, you should start reading from the 25-28
HOLY LORD OF AFTER EFFECTS! I will never believe this was neis' first time editing manga and this is one of your best written videos Jack! This might be my new favourite video from you guys. Keep up the absolutely stellar work!
You make me want to rewatch this so much now.... Like why did I start crying at least three times. But on to the video, I really appreciate the amount of effort into this. From the visuals, to the research, to the actual time it would require to look panel to panel to mach scene to scene...
I just saw 50 seconds of the video and had to just comment on the Godly level of edition in those moving manga panels. Only for that, this video is pure gold. But also, you're great making video essays, so I'm in for a ride! Edit: That was indeed a great video! You explained everything that makes both manga and anime such unique pieces of art in their own way. I want to add that the music in the adaptation was also very well made, and it seems like the compositor also cared about the tone very much, adding a bunch of tinkling and bells-like sounds to the music,so it that sounds very much in resonance with a world of gems. God, now I'm all depressed again waiting for a 2nd season that might never come. The manga became my favorite manga when I started reading it after the anime ended, and it would literally be a dream come true if they finished the adaptation. Because it is indeed a perfect adaptation. A perfect adaptation of a perfect manga. I swear this would be my favorite anime if they adapted it all. But as it is, it's still one of the best there is.
When I first saw clips of how the gem cracks on RUclips, the animation and crisp was what attract me by alot and hence I begin to watch the anime and later down the line the manga and I was pretty awow by their major differences that makes them shine in their own unique way Tho aside from what was mention in the video about visual, the sounds and music also added up to the anime adaptation like how crisp the gem are when hitting something or cracking, the sound of them stepping on grass and stepping on concrete like floor in the acedamy and the music used was astonishing due to how it matches the scene where you can go from calm to serious and back to calm again Tho it's quite a shame that there are those people that aren't satisfied that the anime took a different route then the manga and rather, wanted it to be like thats 2D promotional trailer for the manga, I hope who ever still have this thought in mind see this video to widen their point of perspective that changes are not always bad like poor little phos does, its when the moment one can adapt the change, one will appreciate it more
The manga analysis gave me a new appreciation for a manga that I love and the animation analysis was great too! I really liked how you showed direct comparisons during the credits. Fantastic video!
I gotta say, this was the perfect analysis for the perfect adaptation! The editing on this video is AMAZING and just makes me want to read the manga and watch the anime all over again because your video makes me appreciate it even more! Thank you very much for sharing!
There's a bunch of good analysis of Land of the Lustrous on RUclips, but I was not prepared for the production value that went into this one. Excellent job.
Oh my. My comment will just be one among many others. Yet, despite being a sparkle of pixels and bytes in the net, it is filled with gratitude. I cannot imagine how much it took you, guys, to make this video, but I just want you to know that the outcome is marvelous. It speaks my mind, reflects my thoughts, and it is incredibly well made. I am sharing it everywhere. Thank you so much for your interesting insight.
I have a friend who says "I watch anime for the animation. Otherwise I'll just go read the source material". That is the reason he won't watch anything CGI (Land of the Lustrous and Beastars) even if its good. Just because he cant get over the animation. It triggers me.
I have a friend like that too. I always tell him that he's just close minded and still bitter over a bad cgi anime that came out years ago. If he can't see the beauty in Studio Orange's animation, he's just blind, tbh
This kind of close mindedness is truly the worst. Even the earlier CG anime that didn't look the best like Knights of Sidonia and Ajin are still phenomenal.
This video PERFECTLY breaks down every single thing I love about the anime AND manga so incredibly much that I shed a few tears I hope this video explodes because the editing, the script, and just the quality of its production in general deserves it, and the story deserves the attention as well Anyway I loved this this vid gave me dopamine
Land of the Lustrous was my favourite anime of 2017 so I'm so happy you guys covered it! Thanks for creating more things to watch in quarantine, thanks again!
This editing, is so amazing. The fact that I want to go back and watch the anime is the testiment of how good the colors and the scene construction is. It's so beautiful that I could sit in front of this light show forever. Amazing analysis of panels as well. I see a lot of comparisons video for Land of the Lustrous. And I always felt awe at how close it was panel per panel. But it always felt like it misses something when I praised it as such. Your video made me realize that it is because total faithfulness is not necessary in making a good adaptation. And to emphasize Land of the Lustrous anime's shot for shot faithfulness is missing the point of why it is good. This video, the transitions, the editing, and how the music swells in the end. Made me reexperience the beauty of Land of the Lustrous again in this 25 minutes.
RUclips is very heavily pushing Land of the lostrious to me. Seems like I need to read the manga and watch the anime now. Also I've heard a lot about it when Beastars first realesed
There are so many little things in both the manga and anime that I subconsciously picked up, but never consciously realized until you put it into words. I already loved both even before seeing this video, but now I appreciate them even more. :)
This show was amazing! Im not a fan of CGI the way its been traditionally used in anime which tends to fall in uncanny valley territory, but studio orange really took it to another level. I really hope this anime gets a season two!
Happy more people are talking about LotL/Hnk. Slowly but surely it's reach continues to grow. Also love how most Lotl vids tackle different aspects of the work weather its manga, anime, themes or the viewers personal interpretations. Great job both of you!!
I'm glad you mentioned Ichikawa was considering being an industrial designer. I knew of her ability to make scenes technical yet organic, and in the manga I began to realize how she deliberately positioned the elements in each panel to scene. Her ablility to combine those elements with story-telling makes me admire her artistry. And even though there's so many details to absorb, I can still comfortably read through the manga without feeling delayed in reaching the conclusion of the scenes. I couldn't quite put the words together on why the animated adaptation worked so well to complement the manga, but this analysis has brought me there. Thanks for your commentary!! 💎
I cannot believe how good this video was. Houseki no Kuni has been one of my favorite mangas for years and I've loved the anime adaptation. I've learned so much from your analysis and your research was amazing. And how it is EDITED!! Thank you so much for this amazing video!!!!

@@mrniesguy3111 this is one of the most beautifully edited video essays i've ever witnessed. holy moly
One day will have season 2, one day
And then everyone will know the SUFFERING!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
"Antarctica suffered for me" Cue her bath as winter melts into spring. Have not we suffered enough?
People always talk about how Land of the Lustrous made CG work in anime, but they don't talk much about how the CG contributed in the story. This analysis however explained it perfectly, and as a reader of the manga myself, I am so in love with how you explained the actions studio Orange did to perfectly capture the beauty and story of the manga. Thank you so much for this! 💗✨
watching this after reading the manga is heartwarming.
Your editor really outdid himself with this, great stuff!!
Thanks!
@@mrniesguy3111 For real ! You did amazing !
THIS EDITING IS PHENOMENAL AND I LOVE LAND OF THE LUSTROUS AND I NEED A SECOND SEASON THIS VIDEO IS TOO DAMN GOOD😭😭😭😭🤩🤩 I ALMOST CRIED WATCHING THIS I NEED SEASON 2
TOO BAD! We get BEAST STARS SEASON 2 instead! 😭😫
Huttson Kill I KNOWWWWW😭😭😭😭
guys I heard that they (maybe) will continue this project after beastars is done. Let's just hope for the best. I want to see laphos, old cairn, and ghost. That'll be cool. But I'd hate to see trashmea lol.
The narrative, character development and buddhist symbolism could easily make for a 30-ish minute video
let's just pray for a season 2. We need to continue the suffering, depression, misery, anxiety etc
You and Nies really collectively sell every single series you talk about. Such an important and oft simplified topic too, given the attention it deserves. Fantastic work.
Top things to do while quarantine :
1) analysis a beautiful anime
2) appreciate every details of the anime
3) wanting a season 2
4) repeat
So glad some people still know how to correctly use the word "Aesthetic"
Smol weeblet: "crying"Houseki no Kuni is the most underated piece of art in anime and manga
Under the scope: Hold my obsidian katana!!..
Fkkkkkkk
I miss old phos
I've been waiting for updates (TT)
It was a tall order, creating an anime to match the masterpiece that is the manga.
Likewise a tall order, to create a video with a quality to do the material justice.
Stunning success on both accounts!
finally someone's talking about this anime, about time
The art of HnK manga is great.
The suffering is only the beginning.
We really need that season 2 and 3 and 4 of this show
"Here's where their personality shines" Damn, I never took your for sliding in a pun XD Great video as always
Edit 1: Kinda sad that we might not get a second season because of how season 1 is structured towards the end
dont say that, WE WILL get a second season. never lose hope. NEVER!
Does season 1 differ from the source material towards the end?
No, it just ends in the middle of a chapter
@@EvolvePlaysGames In a way, yes. They cut out a major character that would be integral to season 2
@@zimzamzoom69 i have seen other anime fix stuff like that with a subsequent season tho, like blue exorcist
It's just that when you're watching it all in one go it's a bit... awkward
Its over, the manga has finally ended. 12 years, and I think it's time to start from the beginning again.
Spoilers for after the anime ends:
I hope that someone will eventually use Land of the Lustrous as an example in a video essay about birth of a villain.
Oh man, the page turn mentioned at 10:16 really hits hard. It really makes you feel Phos's shock. Thank you for this video, it was so well written and edited.
The anime was so good at conveying moods, I even cried during some of the scenes because of how emotional it was.
I literally just finished catching up on the manga about 10 minutes ago.
God, I hope Orange makes more of the anime.
This was such a good analysis.
Haven't read the manga that much but the anime did get me by surprise and I still love it.
You should start reading from where the anime left its worth it
I totally recomend the manga, since what the anime adapted it's not even a 5% of what Houseki does after that. Basically, at that point, Houseki was a "normal" anime, but in the manga... This is totally a masterpiece. Btw, if you wanna read the manga, you should start reading from the 25-28
Thanks, for pinning the chapters, I'll give it a read. (*˘ω˘)旦~~
Hope you enjoy it! Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions, it just gets crazier from here.
wake me up when season 2 is here
HOLY LORD OF AFTER EFFECTS! I will never believe this was neis' first time editing manga and this is one of your best written videos Jack! This might be my new favourite video from you guys. Keep up the absolutely stellar work!
We need more people to start talking about this masterpiece.
Yes! Ichikawa is a genius for creating HnK and I'm currently waiting for chapter 94 :,)
@@con__ that’s why I said that I was waiting for the chapter :’(
this is a 24min worship of HNK and i'm all for it!
absolutely amazing video. brought tears to my eyes.
I wish you’d have talked about the music too, cuz that shit’s beautiful
holy crap this animation is amazing :o
YEAAAH DAAAAWG YOU KILLED IT WITH THE SCRIPT AND THE EDITOR MURDERED THE VIDEO
You make me want to rewatch this so much now.... Like why did I start crying at least three times.
But on to the video, I really appreciate the amount of effort into this. From the visuals, to the research, to the actual time it would require to look panel to panel to mach scene to scene...
its a very emotive video, im on tears too
It made me tear up too, specially at the end and I don’t really understand why... what a great series and video
Houseki no Kuni is finally *BACK* after a 10.000 years hiatus! 😭
Ichikawa has finally drop her PS5 down and continue with the series. I'm crying...
When I first saw clips of how the gem cracks on RUclips, the animation and crisp was what attract me by alot and hence I begin to watch the anime and later down the line the manga and I was pretty awow by their major differences that makes them shine in their own unique way
Tho aside from what was mention in the video about visual, the sounds and music also added up to the anime adaptation like how crisp the gem are when hitting something or cracking, the sound of them stepping on grass and stepping on concrete like floor in the acedamy and the music used was astonishing due to how it matches the scene where you can go from calm to serious and back to calm again
Tho it's quite a shame that there are those people that aren't satisfied that the anime took a different route then the manga and rather, wanted it to be like thats 2D promotional trailer for the manga, I hope who ever still have this thought in mind see this video to widen their point of perspective that changes are not always bad like poor little phos does, its when the moment one can adapt the change, one will appreciate it more
The manga analysis gave me a new appreciation for a manga that I love and the animation analysis was great too! I really liked how you showed direct comparisons during the credits. Fantastic video!
Proud to be one of the people who were reading the manga back when it was still obscure and unanimated.
The editing here is so nice, the way her arms were twitching like she was writing? 10/10
Everytime I hear of this anime again I feel nostalgia despite it being not that long ago
I have a friend who says "I watch anime for the animation. Otherwise I'll just go read the source material". That is the reason he won't watch anything CGI (Land of the Lustrous and Beastars) even if its good. Just because he cant get over the animation. It triggers me.
Oh hell nah!!
@@Purpletrident Ajin was an amazing anime, I agree! I also enjoyed Dorohedoro so much, my favorite one so far this year
@@Daelle_snow_ I've not seen Dorohedoro yet. I don't watch weekly anymore, and I'm still trying to watch fall of last year lol
I have never been so thoroughly convinced to watch a show before
I legit teared a bit at 24:00 your editing is so awsome.
And lets not forget the absolutely AMAZING soundtrack!
Finally the justice both the manga and anime deserve.
This might be the best anime video ever. That was brilliant.
I’m so happy that Houseki no kuni is still being recognized for how amazing it is
This video PERFECTLY breaks down every single thing I love about the anime AND manga so incredibly much that I shed a few tears
I hope this video explodes because the editing, the script, and just the quality of its production in general deserves it, and the story deserves the attention as well
Anyway I loved this this vid gave me dopamine
A really good vid!
This is among the most heavy hitting stories I've read as well.
One of the most underrated shows. This show is SO amazing !
RUclips is very heavily pushing Land of the lostrious to me. Seems like I need to read the manga and watch the anime now.
Also I've heard a lot about it when Beastars first realesed
I understood that hawks reference in the beginning. Twitter gonna be twitter
Also gotta praise you. This is really fucking well made. Good job
Thanks!
That editing is god tier. I can only imagine the amount of time put into making this masterpiece of a video.... Props to all
Also the music in the adaptation is really catchy and complement the scene really well
There are so many little things in both the manga and anime that I subconsciously picked up, but never consciously realized until you put it into words.
I already loved both even before seeing this video, but now I appreciate them even more. :)
This show was amazing! Im not a fan of CGI the way its been traditionally used in anime which tends to fall in uncanny valley territory, but studio orange really took it to another level. I really hope this anime gets a season two!
THIS VIDEO WAS ASTRONOMICAL AND THE CARE YOU PUT INTO IT SHOWS, AMAZING JOB.
i'm prayinggggg houseki doesn't become another ouran where we'd have to wait so many years for a season 2
this was definitely a passion project ( yes im talking about both , this video & the anime). great video
THIS WAS AMAZING WOWOWOW!! Also thank u for using they/them when referring to the gems!! Such stellar video in general!!!
I’m late here lol but I swear this is the best intro , video introduction thing I’ve ever seen.
You convinced me to read the manga. What an amazing style
I cannot believe how good this video was. Houseki no Kuni has been one of my favorite mangas for years and I've loved the anime adaptation. I've learned so much from your analysis and your research was amazing. And how it is EDITED!! Thank you so much for this amazing video!!!!
and you have to use thar one antarcticite scene
thank you, now im depressed
This video was pure gold. Thank you. I teared up.
I need season 2... Please 😢
Also, I love seeing how this series gets the recognition it deserves, you nailed this analysis!
This is such a solid video, I hardly ever commnet, but this deserves more views.
Yall be strong and wait until Beastars finally has and streamed their second season, theres a chances a second season of this masterpiece will be confirmed 😔
I’m rewatching most, if not all, analysis of the manga and anime while waiting for the next chapter ,_,
What a coincidence, I recently started watching this show and all of a sudden this video appears even thought the anime goes way back in 2017. I wonder when the second season will be released if there is one.
Land of the lustrous is CGI at it's absolute best. I have never see a more dazzling CGI work. Heck I have never see a more beautiful anime.
