I was going to do this video after the hiatus ended. Ichikawa please get off your PS5 we need you.
Today we return to the Land of the Lustrous, otherwise known as known as Houseki no Kuni, as we discuss the potential main antagonist of the series, Prince Aechmea. Quite a mystery in his own right, there's still quite a lot untold about him, but we attempt to breakdown what we know of him, as well as analyze some of his motives and manipulations. We also talk about why Cairngorm is just... the worst. Phosphophyllite needs better friends.

I turned on the captions for some reason and now, Prince Aechmea is spelled as "Prince Acne", and Cairngorm is spelled as "Karen". I felt so happy

I've seen alot of fucked up media. none of it bothers me on a fundamental level like Cairngorm's transformation does. When she appears on a panel, I avert my eyes.

@@lookatthepicture4107 true like I recently read a screwed up fanfiction where the romantic partner in question falls in love because of fricking _STOCKHOLM SYNDROME!_ that enraged me till no ends but after looking at Cairngorm and Aechmea......those two's relationship are messed up on so many levels I didn't even know was possible
I think cairngorm is just running away from ghost or rather the memories of them. Slipping into a whole new personality and completely leaving behind everthing that made them them. When being with achmea they're no longer cairngorm. No longer have to bear what happened to ghost, what happened to part of them. Conviently for achmea like said in the video they now also no longer have to stick to ghosts last wish, there's no attachment to it anymore because they've run away.
It feels so incredibly wrong for caingorm to be in a "relationship" with the prince cuz they've literally been called a child, and most definitely has been age regressing due to the stress of their winter duties tiring them. I really really dislike anything to do with their marriage. It feels like grooming!
The worst part about this relationship is because when I read about them I felt like it was illegal but I didn’t know why so I just hesitantly read more
when he says "being a wife isn't in your nature" I'm pretty sure he isn't talking about personality, but refering to the fact that romantic love is not a normal part of being a gem. they don't reproduce sexually, nor do they need to pair bond the way humans do.
thats true, but its been established through several different things (eg. phos crying gold alloy from their eyes, the gems feeling the need to wear clothes despite being smooth like barbie dolls) that a lot of their behaviour isnt based on their biology (geology?), but rather the remnants of their ancestral connection to humans. humans are very social and that need for bonds could have very easily passed down to the gems. (dia also asked cinnabar if they and phos are having some sort of romance together lol)

I think is a meta criticism about how often media romanticises marriage and romantic love to the point losing your own personality (often as a female) is considered ok.
Honestly when looking Aemcha and Caingorns relationship i am not just disturbed, but also geniently terrified. Gems are supposed to be pure and ignorant creatures that are not tied to outside world, so seeing something like it being paired with manipulator that lives for thousands of years is already seems like a ticking bomb to me. Also it doesnt seem like Aemcha is interested in Caingorn like a person. He was just obsessed with her as a gem and probably used her to manipulate Phoss even further. She is like a shining toy to him, and once she loses one trait that gave her worth to Aemcha, he will lose interest. At least that's how I interpret it. I honestly cant see their relatiounship working in long terms. Phos already became human, and Caingorn became lunarian, so and doesnt have worth to Aemcha.
Well they seemed to stay together over the 10000 years after she turned so I guess he did care for her...
Thinking about it, he does tell her that he started off just using her but then grew to actually enjoy her company. There's a sense of love there, but I don't think it's completely pure because he as a person has been tainted so badly that he seems to struggle with things like empathy and compassion. They're there but they're faded and it shows in the way he cares. His true feelings on the matter are likely complicated.

Considering how stagnant and low on emotions both lunarians and gems, doesn't surprise me that they stayed together.
I think she's being abused, its very like how an abuser would talk/treat to their victims. Showing some vulnerability, promised sense of "freedom". Only then telling them their "intentions" so their victims are less likely to talk, given they had told them exactly what they wanted. All the while keeping them hooked in someway.
im convinced that enma physically manipulates the gems on the moon. he took out kongos 'control' and added in his own. its why the gems personalities changes so wildly after going to the moon.
Ghost controlling Cairngorm through his eyes completely falls apart when you realize that Cairngorm inside Ghost, Cairngorm with Phos, and Cairngorm with Aechmea are fundamentally all the same. Cairngorm's whole mental disorder is that he completely changes himself from the ground up based on what he thinks the person he's with wants from him. With Ghost it was a partner for Lapis. With Phos it was a reliable older mentor to keep his mental problems in check. And now with Aechmea it's literally just a trophy wife who will submit without question.
These different personas may have manifested differently, but they all come from this central issue of him not being able to keep his own shit together and live his life how he wants because he spent so much of it trapped inside someone else and still thinks that his choices are not his own. He is not at all free right now. Aside from Ghost somehow controlling Cairngorm from his eyes being impossible from what we know, it just doesn't hold up when you think about it for more than a minute. Especially since this isn't the only huge lie that Aechmea told the gems to get them to go along with his plans.
lots of people claim that cairngorm is much happier and more free now than he has ever been, and while that may be true (i dont necessarily disagree), i really dont think its right to call it true happiness and freedom... i mean, pretty much all of cairngorms joy right now seems to be dependent on aechmea being there and providing him with validation, attention and some sort of purpose. if aechmea were to suddenly leave the picture, i feel like cairngorm would just be empty and deeply unhappy once again.

I always saw Achmas actions and motivations of someone who simply has just lost his empathy and humanity over time from immortality, like he still understands emotions and feelings of guilt and probably still even feels them from time to time, but has just gone full blown nihilism mode, and doesn't care, because with time everything is temporary so why actually get hung up about things? As long as you all get prayed away into nothing then it literally won't matter.
I also thought that his "plan" to make Phos pray was literally just leaving them there for 10,000 years, cause Phos already wasn't in a great headspace, and after 10,000 years alone on an Island, literally being held together by glue, and having horrible mind breaking flash backs, Phos would just as much want oblivion, the question is gonna be does Phos also harbor enough of a grudge to simply say fuck off to Achema and relegate themselves to eternity of suffering or let it rock
The reason for the 10,000 years is that's how long it'll take for Sensei's data to transfer to Phos. Phos must only has a 2G network family plan
Yeah I know it takes that long, but that isolation and pain could very easily also serve the purpose of essentially making them want to die, and Achemas just gonna leave em there to stew
@@raizekalos5721 I'm not sure that was part of his plan. When he asked Sensei how long it'd take for the data transfer and was told 10,000 years, his reaction seems rather disappointed. I don't think he expected it.
@@TheDoomerDen yeah I'm aware he didn't literally plan for the 10,000 years thing, but Achemas an opportunist, like even with all his scheming there's no way he can account for every little thing that happens just because how the universe works, and the 10,000 years thing just was another thing that happened that he's going along with, and it serves his purposes cause once they did make Phos a "human" they need them to WANT to pray. Otherwise they're back to the same situation with Adamant, so just leaving them on the island isolated serves that purpose while they're essentially loading (plus it also ties into the themes of Buddhism if they were to remain there for literally millennium by themselves, essentially waiting to reach enlightenment and all that jazz)

Carin getting their eye removed gave me labaotamy vibes. It's so sad. Like imagine if their was a surgery to remove the empathy responsible part of our brain. Like Archmea literally killed carin In a sense.
Technically the remaining bits and pieces of Ghost were already mentally screwed up which mentally screwed Cairn as well and Cairn was still capable of feeling empathy like he was shown to be worried about the mental health of Yellow, I feel his hatred of Phos comes from the fact that he thinks because of Ghost's obsession with Phos he was never free
Considering the fact that Ghost's fragments were forcing Carin into a state where they believed they needed to give up their entire identity to make Phos happy, I don't feel like it's really a lobotomy... He didn't kill Carin, in fact he even tries to push them towards making their own decisions and living freely.
When they* said "I finally get to wear cute things without Ghost telling me it's not what Antarc would like, forcing me to scowl at it" I felt that pain... the pain of feeling somebody who meant the world to you still echoing in your mind, telling you who to be and what to do even when it's against your own well being. And in that sense, I see why Carin fell for Enma. He gave them a chance to let go and become an individual.
Was their relationship healthy? That's questionable, watching them is uncomfortable because, even though they're both immortals, he has still been alive for much longer and has become a lot more detached, while Carin is clearly only just shaping who they are, so there's this odd sense of grooming even though they are both consenting adults.

Yes they didn’t join phos by choice or even want to be their friend by choice and even apologized for pretending but they don’t give a HOT damn. And what hurts worse they cuddled up Achmea once he started giving them compliments and “special treatment “
Cairngorm is an interesting character that puts a cool spin to a black crystal stuck in quartz (the imagery of Ghost tearing off his arm was epic).
What do you concretely mean by "they don't give a HOT damn"? Most gems are apathetic by nature.

It’s just hard to think NONE of them sympathize with phos ? Gorm should have a rough idea loosing a partner having to do a dangerous and mentally straining job and having to deal with a serious body change they have no control over. And gorm DITCHES them like it means nothing

I feel sorry for Cairn... because yea, it was unfair for them to remove Ghost when Ghost never did that to them, but at the same time Ghost was also willing to force Cairn into believing that they have to give up everything they are for Phos...
Who they ended up become and the relationship they ended up in may be rather twisted, but imagine having your sense of identity slowly chipped away at until you're forced into becoming something that you're not.
Nothing about Cairn's story is good, and it's not because Cairn is a bad character, it's because their situation is so fucked that none of the solutions they had would have made it any better...
Continue making more Houseki no Kuni content. I find it really enjoyable.

Edit: after finishing the video I have to say that the Cairngorm theory for making Phos unstable is more probable by the fact that the only part of the story where you can consider Phos "stable mentally" is vol 5, exactly where Ghost/Cairngorm made their appearance and the "final fall" of Phos started exactly when he set foot on the moon

It felt so odd seeing the three gems initially closest to Phos suddenly turning into a bubbly trio of BFFs and even basically affirming that they aren’t the least concerned for Phos and their well-being on Earth in their own ways. Literally the people Phos loved were so poisoned by Lunarian society. Not to mention Ghost being indifferent to Lapis being the only gem they can’t revive since their head’s still part of Phos. Like, whoa. 🤯
I have to say, while I don't like Cairngorm as a person, I think they are selfish and flippant and callous, I absolutely adore them as a character. They are just so entertaining to watch/read, and so compelling that I find them consistently among my "favorite antagonists" lists. In a lot of ways, Cairn is a victim of Aechmea's manipulation too, although there's no doubt they are as I said, a selfish and callous person to begin with, but I can't help but enjoy every second of 'screentime' that Cairn gets.
I also want to point out re: Ghost and Cairn- you say that Ghost was stuck with Cairn and never tried to get rid of her, but there's an important difference here- Ghost was always the one in control. Yes, Cairn was there with them, but Cairn had no control over their lives. She was a prisoner, she could speak to Ghost and try and influence her, but at the end of the day, she existed at Ghost's whim. Imagine the horror of being a prisoner your entire life, thinking you've found freedom, and then being told that no, your jailor is actually still controlling you inside your mind, and none of your choices have been your own. That's incredibly traumatic and terrifying, and I have no doubt that in Cairn's position, I would have done exactly the same insofar as purging Ghost. The person you have been controlled by, helplessly dragged along and dominated by your entire life, now secretly controlling you even after you think you're free? Yeah... I really can't blame them for that.
Which does not excuse the terrible way that Cairn treats Phos at all. And also does not rule out the possibility that Aechmea was lying to her in order to manipulate her, too. (Which is a special kind of messed up, using someone's fear of being manipulated to manipulate them). I still don't think Cairn is like, a good person. Just saying that I think that viewing her as cruel for this decision and Ghost as good for never trying to get rid of her is failing to really put oneself into Cairn's position.
@@Exaar I kind of feel that this would have never even happened if Ghost didn't decide to go full yandere on Phos not to mention Ghost had very little screentime only to get blasted apart by the Lunarians. I also hate Cairngorm but I pity him as well. Not to mention, Ghost Quartz cannot be fully blamed either, we have already seen how mentally screwed up gems can become whenever they lose too many bits and pieces, so it's safe to say that the original Ghost we knew had "died" and his eyes was turning Cairngorm crazy

Honestly I really like your whole analysis of Houseki no Kuni. Do you think you’ll ever go into detail on some of the relationships in Hnk, like Diamond and Bort, Ghost Quartz/Cairngorm and Lapis, Rutile and Padparascha, and how they’re each kinda unhealthy in their own ways? Versus a relationship like Jade and Euclase.
I don't think the prayer would actually kill off all life. I think that's just speculation by Enma as to why Sensei won't pray. No, it is hard to trust anything Enma says, really.
I just want to see the end of this story , at least Phos to be happy

Even though Phos now has creatures they can talk to (that being the rock lifeforms they gave sentience to and the eldritch eye being), they still wish to be completely wiped from their existence. Either that ultimately happens to them or they learn to accept their new status in this current world.

I know the PS5 memes are floating around but I'm betting on Ichikawa doing more work on Pokemon given her involvement with Gen VIII and the recent drop of Gen IX to be released this year.
Realistically I think the same, as well as (hopefully) some involvement in a potential season 2 given that there was some very minor news that Orange may possibly maybe might could be working on it potentially.
I really hope we get to see Cairn and Lapis animated. LaPhos and the lunarians as well ofc

Extreme Cope but it's possible the series could return later this year as it was trending on Japan twitter not too long ago as of the timing of this comment. I feel "Prince Acne" did "fall in love" to some extent after the charade for uniting the gems and lunars succeeded and "Karen" decided to stay and get wiped with him.
Personally I hate him like I hate everyone else for the obvi but regardless I always respected the reasons he does anything if for nothin else I prob would've done the same and it did literally help EVERYONE ELSE in the end. If there is more to know then I'm excited. U keep HnK content alive here like no other and I thank u for that 😁

Would I be crazy to suggest that Ghost may still be to come later? I mean, he’s obviously in powder form, but thats never stopped them before.
What if he turns out to be the last of the original gem group still in physical gem form for later on, as some reminder or stabilizing method for phos during or after this 10,000 year period?
I think it's yet to be revealed whether or not Ghost has been reformed along with all the other gems, but it's very likely they were. I'm sure Ghost will have some choice words for Cairn when they do see them.

I would argue that Aechmea/Enma seems to me now like a hero who lost all hope and has nothing to do to save his people other than doing all those horrendous Acts to one (or few) people to save everyone else

It's easy to think so until you realize it is possible to achieve "nothingness" without a human prayer as long as you find peace within yourself, hence Shiro. The Lunarians just actively don't want to put in the effort themselves- why work on yourself as a person when the easy way out is making someone else do it for you?
I find his 'relationship' with canigorm very.... disturbing.
it's akin to a predator and their victim. using manipulation tactics, he preyed on canigorm anxiety.
I don't even think ghost was still in control of canigorm or had any influence. but canigorm believed this because of how achmea worded his response.
it's clear (to me at least) that ick-mea is trying to isolate phos to a breaking point. the question is...now what? after the earth invasion, and somehow turning phos into a new prayer machine, what will their 'relationship' entail?
one way I can see this, is phos refusing to pray for one reason or another. achmea losing his shit, and taking it out on Canigorm

ngl I had hnk as my favorite manga for YEARS now, and I've always been that type of person to defend cairgorm with all my strength and getting in full blown arguments in his defense, but this video and this comment section just destroyed everything that I thought of him.

Cairngorm did nothing wrong, either. Just as Phos, Cairngorm has been manipulated by Aechmea this while time and therefore, imo, does not deserve all the hate they're getting. I know they're dence, but let's be honest here, so is Phos at times. Idk how you can so easily hate such an obvious victim of extreme manipulation. It's just another case of a broken being trying to strive to live their best life within a world with only other broken beings.
Now that the Manga is over I'm really hoping we get a season 2 for the rest of the story

Great video! I have to disagree with you on the separation of Cairngorm from Ghost. Even when they used to share a body it was Ghost who was in control referring to Cairngorm as 'the little one living inside me'. For me it comes across as - I am the host of this body. On the Moon Aechmea separates the remaining pieces of Ghost from Cairngorm and even if that was part of the plan it allows Cairngorm to truly become themselves. Yes, they became selfish and aggressive but for the fist time in their existance they can start making their own decision. I particularily enjoy how direct and inquisitive they became with their new no-nonsense attitude and how they care for other Gems with the exception of Phos who Cairngorm believe is using others to fulfill their goals without consideration for their well-being (Yellow Diamond is a good example). Ultimatelly I belive as it is in life, sometimes we have to separate ourselves from the past/our old selves to trully realize our potential, whatever it might be.

This is a good video, but I think you didn’t do a good job of understanding or talking about Cairngorm in relation to Aechmea.
The main thing I see here is a misunderstanding of why Cairngorm ends up quickly switching to Princess Gormie. A lot of the HnK community sees this change as illogical, when in fact it’s probably the most logical thing for Cairngorm’s character development. Before they met Aechmea, Cairngorm lacked a real identity for themselves. They certainly wanted one, as evident by them defying Ghost, but when Ghost got taken away the aftershock leads to a sense of being lost, because when your own identity is so heavily tied in with another’s it’s hard to live on your own. Cairngorm decides that they must follow in Ghost’s footsteps and do what they think Ghost would do. This is why they put up with Phos for so long, despite not liking them. When Cairn went to the moon, Aechmea was able to see that they were going through an identity crisis, and took this as an opportunity to further his plans. He delivers the truth that Cairngorm has a problem separating their identity from Ghost in the form of a lie about Ghost being in Cairngorm’s eyes, which easily positions himself as Cairngorm’s savior and for Cairn to reject all things associated with Ghost (Phos and Lapis). They believe they’re free now and have their own identity, but fail to realize that Aechmea is trading out another reliant identity with another. So to word it like Cairngorm is at fault here and that they should just smarten up is ignorant of their character and comes off as victim blaming.
I also take issue with the fact that you treat it like it’s unfair to Ghost to remove Cairngorm’s eyes for two reasons: First, Aechmea was definitely lying about that. Second, even if Ghost was actually inhabiting Cairngorm’s eyes, using the fact that they had to live together before doesn’t justify stripping away Cairngorm’s freedom for Ghost’s own goals. That’s just as malicious as Aechmea’s manipulation of Cairngorm.
Anyways, thanks for reading through this if you did, and if I come off as rude in this comment I apologize for that. I’m just disappointed that so many people in the HnK fundamentally misunderstand Cairngorm and act like Phos can do no wrong. I hope that by commenting this I can offer a new perspective on Cairngorm.

Ghost wasn't at fault either. Remember what happens whenever Gems lose too much of their pieces or have their parts replaced? The "Ghost" who was tormenting Cairngorm can't even be called Ghost, the original Ghost already died protecting Phos, the remaining pieces of Ghost was screwing up Cairngorm's mind
@@Oueenazolatigressgina I highly doubt Ghost or anything close to being Ghost was controlling Cairngorm through their eyes. Up until that point Cairngorm had been looking out for Phos and was the most suspicious of Aechmea, so it’s more likely that when Cairngorm confronted Aechmea, he spied their weaknesses and made up the eye inclusions thing so that he could position himself as their savior and remove any doubt from Cairn’s mind, as well as cause Cairn to distance themselves from Phos. As for the scene where Cairngorm is seemingly getting ripped apart by Ghost, we’ve seen previous examples of gems breaking at will when going through breakdowns, such as with Phos and Rutile, so that can be explained as the result of Cairngorm experiencing their identity crisis in that moment.
@@cito7288 well Aechmea did manipulate Cairngorm but I don't Aechmea had any reason to lie to Cairngorm about his eyes cause when Ghost Quartz died his eyes were unharmed and those eyes were still in Cairngorm not to mention Cairngorm mentioned that when Phos was in a coma for 102 years, he would occasionally get su cidal tendencies
I think you are right but the portrayal of Cairngorm is so cringey you can't help but hate him, especially compared to Phos.

many of the reasons you gave for why you hate cairn were just things that enma did to them and cairn being too naive and easy to manipulate and wanting to be free and to have their own identity and just enjoy life. is it really fair to call them selfish in such a demeaning way after theyve lived so long without even a name just as a part of someone else? and again they were willing to sacrifice themselves just for phos before enma told them of the remnants of ghost in their eyes, which werent even enough to have a bit of ghost that could be reasoned with by cairngorm, so how could they have even asked if ghost wanted to stay when there was no lucid remnants of ghost left in their body. all that leaving those bits of ghost in their eyes did was harm cairngorm and for no reason than to try giving phos the illusion of having antarc back.

Kongo was likely created by the female human he calls *doctor* and built out of pure synthetic hexagonal diamond.
Aechmea is a smart dude but he was just 1 elite scientist in a group of others equal to him. Maybe it's just Aechmea being inferior to *doctor* in intelligence, or Lunarians not having the tech to build perfect diamond. Remember, the lunarians do have a human synthesis facility, but they didn't seem to be making any progress.

Befote I read the manga, I rewatched the anime a couple of times. Sp the early part of the series occupies much more space in my mind, than it does in the actual series. So whenever I hear stuff like "Aechmea has been there for half the runtime" my mind is obliterated. Plus, after the anime, I read the manga stuff in like 5 days, so all of that is super cimpressed in my mind.

Certainly possible, but if it were I think Aechmea would easily lie about that fact. I don't think he ever really intended to restore the gems, just make the facade of it.

There's indeed a strong manipulative side in Enma's and Welegato's relationship, not even i can't deny that!
But you completely gloss over the fact that Enma was once human, that even if he's a genius, he's still bound by human emotions.
Before they go on date, Enma mentions that even him can't resist the curse of human emotions, in his case, the attraction he feels for Cairn. When Cairn is picking new clothes, Quieta mentions that Enma never felt such interest in a gem like he did with Cairn (he even looks annoyed at Quieta for telling too much), and we are talking about a story where Enma's most important "tool" is Phos, not even Phos gathered such attraction.
After the wedding and offering to send her away, she grinding her arm and saying she will stick with him, what he does? He kiss Cairn, and they both hold each other passionately, gems have no concept of kissing, there was no need to kiss Cairn, we can see that he couldn't resist the fact that his love was reciprocated, he wanted to kiss and hold the one he loves.
He reveals his secrets to Cairn because he knows she's gonna be by his side no matter what.
And you even skipped the "Child" part, where one of his plans to save, not only the lunarians, but the three races is them having a baby, a new life that could bring happiness and hope for the future. You mention that he believes cairn isn't the wife kind, however she's clearly shown to be a diligent and supoortive wife, the Japanese version, her dog was given to her for "maternal duties". And after all these years, he could open about his plan of not only saving the three races, but forming a family.
You also talk about a new name as a form to wipe someone's identity, but you don't mention the fact that it's cairn who asked for a new name, she mentions many times that she doesn't want to be called Cairngorm anymore, that's why she's so happy for having a new name, because in her eyes is another piece in her new self.
The part Cairn being selfish for wanting to completely remove Ghost, when Ghost never asked the same, maybe it's because the fact that without a host, Ghost couldn't live, he's a shell that covers another gem. It's better for them to be apart (as lunarians), their whole existence was full of loathing each other and blaming their faults on one another, their existence was hell for both of them. Now both as lunarians with their own bodies, they might even get in a common ground of understanding each other.
