    There is a lot going on with foiling. Controlling the wing, the board, the position of your feet and trying to figure out if you are in the right position to get the foil to lift and stay steady once up to give smooth and controlled flight.
    Good position is dependent on knowing where the balance point of your foil is under your board. Here a simple way to find the balance point and where your feet should go in relation to that point.

    Literally the best video out there bar non, it explains everything you need to know and how it works from the physics point of view and you can't argue with science fact, the right wing, right board and hydrofoil, good conditions to learn, go and test out where your feet needs to be, and BINGO no unnecessarily struggle needed. You don't even need to pump the wing or the hydrofoil, simply plane upto Speed , with gentle body adjustment and up you go.
    I wish enough people find this video.
    Many thanks for the invaluable information mate.

    I've been struggling for a a couple of weeks and I get the same advice from people and it's always stand directly over the mast and have a wide stance and the other is your 1750 front foil too small. I'm 86 kg and I know others who learned on this and I feel it lifing but never smooth and always held back (as it turns out and as it feels like..by me). Now you've explained it..and i'm very much a tech info absorber ...it makes perfect sense. just moved mast right to back and put foil on and can see I was waaaayyy too far back on back foot. It rings so true as at one point i stood in the middle of the board to dog upwind and the board started to rise but i ignored it and went back to standing over the mast. board is gong zuma 6'6" 120ltr. fanatic high aspect 1750 (but it's not like a slip of a front foil..it is meaty), 200 on the back and an 80cm fuselage. 75cm mast. I'll let you know what happens when i put your info to test on water. btw..if you have pumping sussed can we get a video on that from the foil point of view and what actually needs to happen in light wind. Is all well and good people say pump wing and board by doing x and Y, but i'd find it easier if the actual dynamics of what is.needs to happen to foil to get it up in light airs. cheers

      Hi Adrian. Hope you get to try out the technique soon. Its sometimes such small things that hold you back but in the moment you just can't figure it out and sometimes the right thing is counter-intuitive,
      I would like to something on pumping but at the moment I don't really have the right footage to assist in an explanation. I will see what i can do.

      @@heliboy999fly any thoughts on what effect fuselage length has on foot position. Btw not had any wind really so not had chance to try out technique except for 20 mins and i managed to get some controlled flight. Felt good. But cheated and worked out foot position on dry land by working out where centre of lift was with mast at back of track. Put an 80cm fuselage on as found the 64cm was a bit lively when learning.... Hence was asking about foot position with different length fuselage. I'm sure it has some bearing on it

      @@adrianwest10 Hi. Sorry for late reply, been very busy at work. Fuse length won't really have a huge effect on the lift but may give a slight change in the balance point due to the Stab having more effect on the Front wing. It may only be a couple of mm so not something to stress over. Probably not even noticeable. It will however make the foil much more stable which gives you time to figure things out and progress on. I recently went from a 75cm fuse to a 60cm fuse and rode it for one session and went straight back to the longer stab as it killed all my gybes and felt too unstable. Wasn't worth the effort for what small benefits I might be getting in pumping etc.

      @heliboy999fly  2 года назад +1

      @@LiesaSmith wow! That’s extreme.
      So the current takes you upwind? ( in to the wind) and makes chop?
      What that is doing is giving you the equivalent of 9knots of extra wind so you need to depower your hand wing and also try to ride “downwind” which involves standing more upright and also more over the board whilst you are in the current. Going down wind means you have less to lean on and you need to be very delicate with your weight and foot position.
      I’ve sailed in 5 knots current before but 9 is extreme. It’s also going to cause a lot of turbulence over your foil.
      A longer fuselage and rear Stab will help as well as it will be more stable and slower to react.

He can kitesurf proficiently, one-wheel, skateboard, snowboard. Myself, I am just starting to learn winging and have pretty good kitefoil experience. I suggested to him a 150 liter board and a 2400 front foil wing and most likely a min 6m or 7m wing. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks for the tech talk on foil/board setup.

    • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly  2 года назад +1

      Hi.
      I don’t think his weight will be an issue as long as he can stand on a board and work the wing.
      Winging is very different to kiting I so far as you have to get into the standing position and then power up as opposed to coming straight up into the starting and sailing position with a kite.
      The volume and length of the board will make a huge difference in the early days and I would suggest 150 litres is a minimum for him to learn.
      Would be worth getting him out on a SUP for a couple of sessions with a wing to get the feel of driving the power down through his core and into the board.
      A 6-7 m wing would be ideal (unless he is 5 foot tall.

    So does the mast position on the Slingshot Switch Fuselage just move the center of lift farther forward (when you move it to the B position) instead of through the wing (A position) and you can just compensate for that with the mast plate location in the track, or is there something else to consider with those mast/fuselage settings? I'm asking because I have an older Slingshot set-up without a Switch fuselage and I can only mount the mast through the wing (I'm using a Infinity 86 wing and no footstraps)- not sure if this will be a hindrance for me or not...

    • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly  2 года назад

      Hi.
      Yes correct. The centre of lift is moved forward and a sliding track can be used to fine tune the position in relation to the foot position on the board.
      I used the C position early on to put the centre of lift as far forward as possible because I was using a longer board and I wanted less swing weight.
      The A position can make the foil very sensitive to yaw. I tried it after many months using the B position and for me it was almost unusable. Found the set up very hard to control.

    This is very helpful but I'm not sure I understand why the mast needs to go all the way back. Let's say we have two identical boards 6' x 30" 120 liters, no foot straps. One has the mast all the way back with the rider perfectly balanced over the foil. The other has the mast all the way forward with the rider perfectly balanced over the foil. • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly  2 года назад

      It’s just an easy reference point
      Also having the mast at the back means there is a lot more board in front which damps the up and down motion slightly.
      You are trying to get the board to lift slowly so you have time to react and get a feel.
      Once you are in the ballpark and the board is lifting you can fine tune.

    • @heliboy999fly
      @heliboy999fly  2 года назад

      And in the video I did say about once you find the balance point you can then move the foil forward to the foot strap area or more into the floaty part of the board if you want to. You now know how far to move the foil corresponding to the distance you want to move your feet.
