    Everyone wants to be an expert, but nobody wants to be a beginner. Being a beginner sucks, and most of us would be inclined to hide in a closet while practicing. Kudos to this person showing us what raw dedication and hard work and devotion looks like.

    The next time you see someone doing something, and think "I could never do that," remember this.
    I'm reminded of my electric unicycle. All the videos made it look so easy, and when I finally bought one, I was in tears the second day over how hard it was. After owning it for only two weeks(3 days of practice), I had resigned myself to giving it to my sister (who rides a regular unicycle) because I would never be able to ride it.
    After only 5 days of practice another 2 weeks later, I was confident enough to try it on pavement instead of grass.
    That was 2 years ago, and I prefer it over my car now.

    When I looked at others doing that, I thought "damn, that looks like something very difficult, but those people seem to be doing it with ease. It must be easier, than it looks".. Well. Now I know. It's exactly as difficult as I imagined it to be. it's just as with anything else - practice, determination, devotion, persistence and hard work, that make it look easy, when Pros do it.
    PS. I have shown this to my 3-yo doughter to teach her, that everything is achievable, as long as you put enough determination and hard work into it.

    Nicely done! Reminds me of when I learned to surf 56 years ago. Spent a week in the water learning and since been around the world surfing. The most joyest times of my life. This is next. I was yelling at the screen to move your right foot back over the vertical stablizer. Once you did that you were positioned for the lift with less energy. Nice feeling gliding like that isn't it? I have to wait a while longer (4 months) just had back surgery to try this out. Thanks for sharing your process in achieving gliding on top of the water. 😎🖖

      @@yannickverI moved away from the ocean but we have giant lakes within 2 hours. I looked into wing foiling but Holy cow your looking at 5-8 thousand dollars. Nope I like what you have there. I'd be able to surf the wind waves on the lake and drive to the west coast (6 hrs away). If I may ask what was the cost of your set up, board and wing?

    • @yannickver
      @yannickver  3 месяца назад

      @@scottgorman7166 I guess you're based in US, here in EU we have the brand 'gong' that makes very good wingfoil gear. for less than 2000€ you have a starter set.
      The new trend is using kind a small retractable parachutes/kites (google for parawing BRM) with big boards and foils. Maybe usable on your lake, but yes - expensive. Look at the second hand market of buy last years equipment you can get very good deals.
      If you want dockstart foil pumping and keep it as cheap as possible: stay with alumina mast (no carbon) and make your own board. Just a piece af wood with 4 holes will do the trick. I thinks the brand armstrong is relatively cheap. (but don't look at carbon masts). I think you'll get a pumpfoil and mast under 1500€.
      But look around for wingfoil gear, much more achievable sport than pump foiling. take some courses and enjoy the ride ;-).
      inflatable boards are not bad to start.
      My foils and masts are from 'sabfoil' Italian brand. Not cheap. All my kites are F-one but buy kites from previous season with big reduction. My boards are 'appletree' not cheap, but very very strong and light. One board is bought second hand.

    Outstanding documentation of the Learning Curve. Why did you choose to do your Dock Start with the Board out in front of you and jump on from a stand still start when it looked like you could have used the end of the canoe dock (background) and did a side run with board in the water, release board and jump on the board while it is moving? Have you tried the Run and Jump technique to compare to your Still Start? I look forward to your comments. Thanks for posting!

      @IRWE905
      thx for the feedback.
      we tried all possible ways to jump on the board. (on the channel you will find the attempts from previous year).
      When you run sideways: impossible on our dock as there are metal poles in the water to support the dock and the foil would hit them. It's also very dangerous for the board and the rider with a bad start.
      the run and jump method is only possible on a dock that goes 'in' the water with no boats attached and nothing under the dock.
      If you dock allows it: run and jump is much easier.

    Super weird I came across this. Reminds me of my metal shop teacher in high school back in the early 80s. Mr. Carlson. He had a newspaper clipping of him setting a record for being on a board like this. Except it was about 5 ft off the water and was being pulled by a boat. I believe it was lake Washington.

    Did you get hurt by the foil? I saw a couple of bad falls…. 😬 I guess the impact vest is more than welcome!
    From my side I have a 1900cm high aspect, 80cm alu mast (Decathlon Taaroa) but a too big wingboard 120L 195cm x 77 😅 is it impossible? Or does it worth some tries?

      @yannickver  7 месяцев назад +2

      Until now I only fell 2 times on my wing, a small hole in the wetsuit and a minor cut. I always wear my impact vest and helmet for extra protection.
      I have also taken away the sharp tips of my foil and stab with some sandpaper.
      Your board will be too big for pumping. I think the maximum boardsize will be about 130-135cm, a longer board will be too hard to pump.
      Also be careful not to start with a too small board, the small boards like Kluber 80 from Gong will be very reactive and the learning curve will be very steep. Best way is to start with a mid size board.
      hope this helps...

    Have a question if you can advise of a chipest set to start with this. am looking compact for transportation and maybe inflatable air board, and fail that allows me 100kg to start, then I believe wing must be taken in hands not just pump. But cant find a good chip set at the market, maybe you can hint fewer?

    • @yannickver
      @yannickver  4 месяца назад +1

      The cheapest brand you will find is french brand 'gong'.
      Price/quality it's very good and much much cheaper than other brands. it's a direct sale company, can't find them in shops. They have inflatable boards. With 100kg you'll need adapted gear for the big boys: big foil and relatively big wings.
      If you want to keep it cheap, stay away from carbon masts.
      For dockstart foil pumping you need special gear.

    Only 22 sessions.. this is not too bad of a time investment
    So, with a lake close by, one could learn pumpfoiling within a month or two for an hour per session, right? sounds super doable to me casually learning this during a Summer when there is no need for a wetsuit
    I am always looking to learn new sports/activities, thus looking now into pumpfoiling, I would also have not too bad of opportunities regarding foiling location (lake, river)
    Would you say the time and especially money investment (I have no idea about equipment, I am very scared of buying smth that turns out to be not the right choice for pumpfoiling and a lot of money would be wasted just leaving frustration) was worth it? Is it fun enough, or is it actually not that special or too restricted (I mean, in the end you can only ge a few secs/mins and that's it) and rather invest time in other activities? Or would you say hands down one of the coolest feelings you've experienced? I would like to hear your opinion :)

    • @yannickver
      @yannickver  2 месяца назад

      It’s fun to do but my main goal is to improve the board and foil control and to improve my pump technique so I can improve my wingfoil skills. It’s also an excuse to be on the water when there’s no wind 😊
      I see it also as a challenge to find the technique to stay as long as possible on the foil.
      With my actual equipment I can pump for 2 min. I think there’s still some improvement, but I will never be able to pump for 30 min with my actual gear .
      Is it the coolest feeling? I would say no but it’s fun to do besides all the other watersports I do (kitefoiling, wingfoiling). The fact that there’s a challenge makes it fun for me. The fact that I can pumpfoil without wind makes it also interesting for me, improving my technique of wing- and kitefoiling by pumping.
      If you want to go for the long distance you will need another foil, I think this can also be fun (never tried it) and maybe one day I will try.

    Thanks a lot for the very instructive compilation. I am starting next month on a lake in SW France (Biscarosse). What really makes me scratch my head is your front foot is always on the left side of the board then you tip the board and fall 99% on the left side too. Is there any reason you keep doing it instead of trying to land with the front foot centered on the board?

    • @yannickver
      @yannickver  3 месяца назад

      Hi Frederic,
      In theory you should have both feet perfectly centered, that’s correct.
      I think what is happening is a natural position. I jump on the board and have my front foot more to the left and by my back foot more to the right of my board. Having both feed out of the center gives a more stable position, this makes it also possible to try to correct the direction of the board by changing the pressure on the board between both feet without having to change the position of my upper body.
      Having your both feet perfectly centered makes it much more difficult to correct the direction of the board.
      When I wingfoil I also have both feed out of the center.

      In the beginning I focus on the arm movement, the movement of the arms helps to find the correct cadence of pumping.

      Almost all foil-related watersporters wear helmets: there is always a risk to hit your head during a fall with the board or the foil. The board is very hard and the foil is sharp.

    All the action was under the water. As to the board it needs to have roughness or you would need to attach your feet by some attachment. A string at the front of the board to hold could also do.
