After only 5 days of practice another 2 weeks later, I was confident enough to try it on pavement instead of grass. That was 2 years ago, and I prefer it over my car now.
When I looked at others doing that, I thought "damn, that looks like something very difficult, but those people seem to be doing it with ease. It must be easier, than it looks".. Well. Now I know. It's exactly as difficult as I imagined it to be. it's just as with anything else - practice, determination, devotion, persistence and hard work, that make it look easy, when Pros do it. PS. I have shown this to my 3-yo doughter to teach her, that everything is achievable, as long as you put enough determination and hard work into it.

Nice idea. But I think it will be hard to find a clear material which is stiff and strong enough to use for a mast. The mast takes huge bending/torsion forces with those big foils. This is a special extra strong and stiff mast for foil pumping.

You lean too much to the front - splash. You lean too much to the back - splash. You lean a little too much to the left - splash. You lean a little too much to the right - splash. You pump too fast - splash. You pump too slow - splash. You blink at the wrong moment - splash. Your heart beats at the wrong moment - you get the idea.
Outstanding documentation of the Learning Curve. Why did you choose to do your Dock Start with the Board out in front of you and jump on from a stand still start when it looked like you could have used the end of the canoe dock (background) and did a side run with board in the water, release board and jump on the board while it is moving? Have you tried the Run and Jump technique to compare to your Still Start? I look forward to your comments. Thanks for posting!
@IRWE905 thx for the feedback. we tried all possible ways to jump on the board. (on the channel you will find the attempts from previous year). When you run sideways: impossible on our dock as there are metal poles in the water to support the dock and the foil would hit them. It's also very dangerous for the board and the rider with a bad start. the run and jump method is only possible on a dock that goes 'in' the water with no boats attached and nothing under the dock. If you dock allows it: run and jump is much easier.
@@yannickver it's good to see how much effort, blood and sweat it takes. I have a lot of respect for your hard work and for your achievments. Well done.
Super weird I came across this. Reminds me of my metal shop teacher in high school back in the early 80s. Mr. Carlson. He had a newspaper clipping of him setting a record for being on a board like this. Except it was about 5 ft off the water and was being pulled by a boat. I believe it was lake Washington.
@@yannickver I would have tried this 20 years ago, but at 68, with a few health problems cropping up, I think I’ll stick to kayaking and bowling. Fun to watch though. A friend of mine who had a ski boat years back also had a similar foil board with a seat, called the “Air Chair”, and we all had a ton of fun trying to perfect riding it.
What a perseverance!!!!! And physical condition to make so many attempts every single day! You’re the role model man!! I’ll think about you at every attempt when I’ll start practicing and failing and learning and tuning ! Did you get hurt by the foil? I saw a couple of bad falls…. 😬 I guess the impact vest is more than welcome! From my side I have a 1900cm high aspect, 80cm alu mast (Decathlon Taaroa) but a too big wingboard 120L 195cm x 77 😅 is it impossible? Or does it worth some tries? Many thanks for this video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Until now I only fell 2 times on my wing, a small hole in the wetsuit and a minor cut. I always wear my impact vest and helmet for extra protection. I have also taken away the sharp tips of my foil and stab with some sandpaper. Your board will be too big for pumping. I think the maximum boardsize will be about 130-135cm, a longer board will be too hard to pump. Also be careful not to start with a too small board, the small boards like Kluber 80 from Gong will be very reactive and the learning curve will be very steep. Best way is to start with a mid size board. hope this helps...
the only part that is dangerous is the sharpness of the foil if you hit it. Trying to pumpfoil with a beach start earned a visit to the hospital and 5 stiches.
good report and tips, tgank, I'm pumping together with you while watching. Have a question if you can advise of a chipest set to start with this. am looking compact for transportation and maybe inflatable air board, and fail that allows me 100kg to start, then I believe wing must be taken in hands not just pump. But cant find a good chip set at the market, maybe you can hint fewer?
The cheapest brand you will find is french brand 'gong'. Price/quality it's very good and much much cheaper than other brands. it's a direct sale company, can't find them in shops. They have inflatable boards. With 100kg you'll need adapted gear for the big boys: big foil and relatively big wings. If you want to keep it cheap, stay away from carbon masts. For dockstart foil pumping you need special gear.
Only 22 sessions.. this is not too bad of a time investment So, with a lake close by, one could learn pumpfoiling within a month or two for an hour per session, right? sounds super doable to me casually learning this during a Summer when there is no need for a wetsuit I am always looking to learn new sports/activities, thus looking now into pumpfoiling, I would also have not too bad of opportunities regarding foiling location (lake, river) Would you say the time and especially money investment (I have no idea about equipment, I am very scared of buying smth that turns out to be not the right choice for pumpfoiling and a lot of money would be wasted just leaving frustration) was worth it? Is it fun enough, or is it actually not that special or too restricted (I mean, in the end you can only ge a few secs/mins and that's it) and rather invest time in other activities? Or would you say hands down one of the coolest feelings you've experienced? I would like to hear your opinion :)
It’s fun to do but my main goal is to improve the board and foil control and to improve my pump technique so I can improve my wingfoil skills. It’s also an excuse to be on the water when there’s no wind 😊 I see it also as a challenge to find the technique to stay as long as possible on the foil. With my actual equipment I can pump for 2 min. I think there’s still some improvement, but I will never be able to pump for 30 min with my actual gear . Is it the coolest feeling? I would say no but it’s fun to do besides all the other watersports I do (kitefoiling, wingfoiling). The fact that there’s a challenge makes it fun for me. The fact that I can pumpfoil without wind makes it also interesting for me, improving my technique of wing- and kitefoiling by pumping. If you want to go for the long distance you will need another foil, I think this can also be fun (never tried it) and maybe one day I will try.
Thanks a lot for the very instructive compilation. I am starting next month on a lake in SW France (Biscarosse). What really makes me scratch my head is your front foot is always on the left side of the board then you tip the board and fall 99% on the left side too. Is there any reason you keep doing it instead of trying to land with the front foot centered on the board?
Hi Frederic, In theory you should have both feet perfectly centered, that’s correct. I think what is happening is a natural position. I jump on the board and have my front foot more to the left and by my back foot more to the right of my board. Having both feed out of the center gives a more stable position, this makes it also possible to try to correct the direction of the board by changing the pressure on the board between both feet without having to change the position of my upper body. Having your both feet perfectly centered makes it much more difficult to correct the direction of the board. When I wingfoil I also have both feed out of the center.
None with dockstart foil pumping, but I also tried beachstart foil pumping and I got a big fincut on my big toe... visit to the urgencies and I got 5 stitches.
Thanks for sharing ♥️ I have one question for you: If you fall pumping in the middle of the lake, whats happen? Can you pump from below and get back on your feet? I love surfing and i want try pumpimg foil ❤
To beginners: if you record yourself first to watch is front of the board if it’s going up and down more then the back of the board you have to much weight on your back leg I’d also recommend putting your foil in the center on the slots as you get better start adjusting it to the back
Sure looks like it but anything worth doing should have a bit of a challenge to it Than what would be the point if it was easy and everyone could do it
no idea why youtube wanted to show me this but I watched whole. Congratulations man! I would be so mad after first few try’s 😂. Have a question to you: how long u are able to swim? Is there also improvement in term of time?
Glad you enjoyed it! This is the second season we try to pump a foil, it's hard, very hard to learn. Yes, yous swimming improves but you need it les and les because nog we can more or less stop pumping where we want... I don't know why you got it, but youtube started promoting this clip a few days ago... never had that before.
That was great to see your progression. I do have a question, now you can do it, which muscles do you use the most? It looks like it might really burn your thighs, but at the same time i can see it hurting your abbs too?
In the beginning I focus on the arm movement, the movement of the arms helps to find the correct cadence of pumping. Now that pumping is going better, I don’t need as much arm movement than in the beginning of dockstarting.
Almost all foil-related watersporters wear helmets: there is always a risk to hit your head during a fall with the board or the foil. The board is very hard and the foil is sharp. With a helmet it's nothing, without helmet often a cut with hospital visit... You only have one coconut take care of it ;-).
nope... not with dockstart. You have to paddle like a surfer to get back to the shore, which is not a big deal. With a supfoil you can get on the foil again.
All the action was under the water. As to the board it needs to have roughness or you would need to attach your feet by some attachment. A string at the front of the board to hold could also do.
I'm thinking of the person who stood by and filmed this. Now, that is a great friend.

Way to stick with it and master a new skill! Im cheating and learning to pump behind a boat, but im hoping to be able to get a dock start down too.
I think every way to learn it is good, if you have access to a boat, why not using it.
Jumping is the hardest part...
Your analysis is spot on. All has to be perfect or it's a fail ;-).
Big Kudus! Thanks for sharing.
thx ! nice you enjoyed the video.
Mixed with the music, it’s a great video and reminder. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@IRWE905
thx for the feedback.
we tried all possible ways to jump on the board.
If you dock allows it: run and jump is much easier.
here is the first attempt a few years ago:

Great video! Its hard and takes many sessions. I am at 1 session! :-) the hardest for me is to find a dock. ;-)
Yes it's hard... and if you find a dock, not all of them are safe for dockstart.
After 5 times i would be thinking of ways to attach some battery submersible motors and handle bars on that thing!!🤣🤣 Kudos for your drive!!👻🌶🤘😎
It exists and is used a lot in waves. only drawback: those toys are expensive. (E-foils)
Learning how to learn is key .
Damn that looks like hard work.
Yes it is, but you should see as a training for other foil-related sports.
Love it, bro!
Glad you like it!
Hi, probably something like this:
ruclips.net/video/HoGqdZNdb_o/видео.html
i think it's already very old.
This is like the video version of one of those never give up posters.
haha, thx... that's a good one !
Looks like a heck of a workout
It's only very hard for the legs. (once you can stay on the foil).
@@yannickver I would have tried this 20 years ago, but at 68, with a few health problems cropping up, I think I’ll stick to kayaking and bowling. Fun to watch though. A friend of mine who had a ski boat years back also had a similar foil board with a seat, called the “Air Chair”, and we all had a ton of fun trying to perfect riding it.
you could try and E-foil. Same thing but a bit easier with motor help. Bit expensive toys though ;-).
@@yannickver I could, but I have too many toys now and need to start thinning them out
That's hard.well done. Ut I'm guessing if you come off in the water your scuppered..
If you fall of the board you have to swim... that's correct.
Man that food delivery guy actually looks like a legend now.
Love the helmet.
Best way is to start with a mid size board.
hope this helps...
this is what it takes to win. commitment. keep it up man. (can your 'videographer' film myself as well? ahah)
Seems like you live on a very nice place. I guess he will accept to come over ;-)
Practice makes progress.
yes !
So this was the original inspiration for the Griddy?
haha, good one... ;-).
That looks like hard work
it is, but very rewarding once mastered... and very good training.
Reminds me of when I first started learning to skateboard only probably a lot less painful.
the only part that is dangerous is the sharpness of the foil if you hit it.
Trying to pumpfoil with a beach start earned a visit to the hospital and 5 stiches.
After watching you, my thought was "where are my box of matches " (set the board on fire)
haha, I don't think it will burn very wel ;-)
This looks like an intense leg/cardio workout.
it is ;-).
8:30 when he first starts to git gud
good report and tips, tgank, I'm pumping together with you while watching.
Only 22 sessions.. this is not too bad of a time investment
So, with a lake close by, one could learn pumpfoiling within a month or two for an hour per session, right? sounds super doable to me casually learning this during a Summer when there is no need for a wetsuit
I am always looking to learn new sports/activities, thus looking now into pumpfoiling, I would also have not too bad of opportunities regarding foiling location (lake, river)
Would you say the time and especially money investment (I have no idea about equipment, I am very scared of buying smth that turns out to be not the right choice for pumpfoiling and a lot of money would be wasted just leaving frustration) was worth it? Is it fun enough, or is it actually not that special or too restricted (I mean, in the end you can only ge a few secs/mins and that's it) and rather invest time in other activities? Or would you say hands down one of the coolest feelings you've experienced? I would like to hear your opinion :)
It’s fun to do but my main goal is to improve the board and foil control and to improve my pump technique so I can improve my wingfoil skills. It’s also an excuse to be on the water when there’s no wind 😊
I see it also as a challenge to find the technique to stay as long as possible on the foil.
@@yannickver cool, I appreciate your detailed response, thank you for your time and keep enjoying floating over the water :)
Hi Frederic,
In theory you should have both feet perfectly centered, that’s correct.
Number One
thx !
Total perseverance ❤! How many cuts injuries did u suffer? Some knarley falls there ! The blades are so sharp!
None with dockstart foil pumping, but I also tried beachstart foil pumping and I got a big fincut on my big toe... visit to the urgencies and I got 5 stitches.
Thanks for sharing ♥️
I have one question for you:
If you fall pumping in the middle of the lake, whats happen? Can you pump from below and get back on your feet?
I love surfing and i want try pumpimg foil ❤
you cannot start from the water when you fall. You have to swim back to the shore.
To beginners: if you record yourself first to watch is front of the board if it’s going up and down more then the back of the board you have to much weight on your back leg I’d also recommend putting your foil in the center on the slots as you get better start adjusting it to the back
thx for your input !
It reminds me of learning the mario world cape.
underrated comment lol
I find it odd that all those people in little boats aren’t even looking at this amazing contraption as he does this all around the lake.
every session is about an hour and after a few minutes people don't watch anymore...
Every guy from the 80s and 90s are thinking, 🙄 yep no worries I can do that 😂😂😂. Well done to you.
thx !
Looks like fun
it is fun but very technical and physical.
It's all in the legs (thighs)... they feel like they are on fire after some time.
Once you are on the board, are you focusing on your arm movement or leg movement first?
In the beginning I focus on the arm movement, the movement of the arms helps to find the correct cadence of pumping.
Now that pumping is going better, I don’t need as much arm movement than in the beginning of dockstarting.
The helmet confuses me. What do you think you’ll hit o.o
Almost all foil-related watersporters wear helmets: there is always a risk to hit your head during a fall with the board or the foil. The board is very hard and the foil is sharp.
With a helmet it's nothing, without helmet often a cut with hospital visit... You only have one coconut take care of it ;-).
@ I get it just idk I’ve been hit in the face with everything from jet skis to baseball bats. You’ll be okay mostly 😂. Head freedoms important
Does he think he’s scooping the air with his hands to make himself go faster?
No, he is using the momentum from his arms to make more speed with the foil.
So wait.. if u fall off the board in the middle of a lake, there’s no way to get back and make your way back to the shore?
nope... not with dockstart. You have to paddle like a surfer to get back to the shore, which is not a big deal.
With a supfoil you can get on the foil again.
All the action was under the water. As to the board it needs to have roughness or you would need to attach your feet by some attachment. A string at the front of the board to hold could also do.
