Wow. As an American I had a WHOLE different image of this. I had assumed it was a really long interstate highway tunnel that you drive through yourself and not a ferry crossed with a train. I'd been wondering about traffic jams, accidents, and how the switch to the opposite side of the road was handled, and all, but obviously this doesn't happen with this setup!
Because the US is a car culture, if you want to get somewhere 99% of the time its by car. But in Europe and most of Asia public transport and walking dominate most of traveling.
@@cosmicusstardust3300 Yeah, other than the Acela corridor (the line of cities from Washington DC to Boston), public transportation is not impressive and sometimes unsafe too. In all seriousness in some ways it’s more like a Third World country but with newer equipment and less overcrowding. I’ve heard it’s somewhat similar in Australia to here where car culture is dominant.
@@cosmicusstardust3300 I was just thinking exactly this - if it was run by Americans, there would be no train!
Me too, i thought Holland Tunnel like.
@@ggzmtyzd5730 Exactly the one I was picturing. Whoops!!
as a frequent euroshuttle traveller, I love the vibe inside the train, and yes, there are mutli floor cars.
We saw the double decker carriages on our recent return to the UK! Never been able to experience that in our "large" van. I wonder if the truck trains are even larger than the ones we took!
I went on the EuroShuttle for the first time last week.
It was the dullest travelling experience I've ever had.
Just inside a steel tube for 40-odd minutes. Trains look tired. Bathroom facilities seemed like that of a 30 year old plane.
Doors between carriages were often difficult to open too.
Effective way to get to France but as interesting as as sitting in a box.
“I thought it was gonna be sealed so the water can’t come in” 🤣 Taking the Euro tunnel always feels so exciting! It’s weird to think you’re underneath the sea. Amuse-toi en France! 🇫🇷 🤩
Hahaha 😂😂
I know! Part of my brain can’t even process that we were literally under the sea! 😅
Thank you 🥰🥰
fr🤮nch
I mean it runs through the rock on the sea floor. It’s not like a pipe going through the water haha
@@Hazza4257 oh damn, I didn't know this one lmao. That makes it even more comfortable to know I believe.
Bro, never ever begin with an alarm tone again
It's how I start my days and I wanted to reflect that in the video.
@@OurWildHorizonsYh but it’s a sound that gives millions around the world anxiety and makes them angry. People hate hearing it
This seems to be a very impressive place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job!
Thank you for the lovely comment :)
so you can drive your car onto a train and take that train under the friggin ocean and end up in an entirely different country😂 that's awesome. humans are awesome.
That’s so interesting! Thanks for sharing guys! ❤️ we are right now heading to Valencia 🚌 following the sun ☀️
Than you so much for watching! :) oh wow!!! What a beautiful place, can’t wait to visit there 🥰😍 enjoy the sun 🤗🙏🏼
This is so interesting. As an American, I had assumed that cars wouldl be driving in a 24 or so mile long tunnel. The thought of driving 24 miles in a tunnel freaks me out because I am slightly claustrophobic. But now knowing this is how it's done is way more comforting and makes much more sense for a whole bunch of reasons.
Definitely much safer this way, but we do have some crazy long mountain tunnels in Europe which are driven through. Mount Blanc tunnel comes to mind!
@@OurWildHorizons okay. Thanks for the response.
Mount Blanc tunnel is 12 km long and two lanes with average speed of 60 km/h. The Channel tunnel is 50 km and only one lane. Because of the Tunnel effect the chance that people would get into a hypnotic state is very high. Probably leading to many accidents a day. Also it would take almost an hour to reach the other end. Not a great idea.
That's why they use all kind of trucs to mitigate this in the longest car tunnel in the world ( Lærdalstunnelen in Norway, 25 km)
Euro-Tunnel tubes have a big diameter (7,4 m), so I didn't feel claustrophobic at all, whenn I used it with an Eurostar train. Quite the contrary, my impression was that the train itself looked very small in the tube.
Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel is pretty scary the first time.
Deffo eased some of my nervous about travelling the EuroTunnel in the future
I’m so pleased about that :) it’s a very easy process and the staff are really helpful if you do get a bit lost :)
Stay safe guys and have an amazing adventure!
Thank you very much 😀😀
Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance. This process is indeed elegant, which means someone(s) took time to look at it from the traveler's point of view. Well done! and thank you from Canada for this informative video
Thanks! Very useful info/video 😍
That was so helpful, thank you!

You’re welcome! 😊
Thanks for the info, going in a week. Fingers crossed!
Hope it’s a successful trip!
Thanks I've been on the euro star in 2011 on a coach but we will be driving are car on it next month we just booked today we will be driving to central Italy I've never driven over seas before but everyone who's done it had to always do it for the first time like everything in life
Sooo cool.
Thanks so much really helped me out .
Your welcome 😄
Thanks for sharing. I'm from North America and was always curious about the process of loading and unloading vehicles from the trains.
Thanks for watching!
I’ll be heading to south France in August. We’ll be taking our mpv to the euro tunnel and by the looks of it . Should be a easy thing to do. It’s a family holiday that we’re going on.
Yeah, you'll cruise through! Hope you enjoy your holiday :)
@OurWildHorizons thanks. It'll be a great trip I'm sure. We will be boarding our train at 12am so we are going to leave at 9pm which means we should get there at 11pm which gives us a hour to relax before continuing the journey. That means we should be In France at 1:35am French time or 12:35am UK time.
Really appreciated this video - thank you. Feel confident I can do this now :-)
You've got it! Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for taking the time to make the video guys 👍🏽
You’re welcome! Thanks for tuning in 😀
Thanks, boys!
Nice explainer! One tip I would add is that the machine to get tickets is quite far back from the boom gate. I remember the first time I did the trip I sat at the boom gate for like 5 minutes waiting for someone to come check my ticket and wondering why there was no one in that little office 😂 It was only when I reversed back that I noticed the little ticket machine thing which - as you say - is really low down!
Hahaha yes that’s solid advice! It’s easy to miss! I was driving so slowly I could have missed it but yeah now I’m thinking about it, it’s easy to miss! 😅 hope you had a nice trip! 🥳🥰
very good reportage
Thanks, glad you thought so ☺️
This was an awesome video! We’re currently waiting for the euro tunnel and it’s been pretty easy so far
Insanely expensive though $395 pounds for France and return to UK
Well it's reassuring to know how simple it is! Be interesting on the way back as to whether it's any stricter or difficult because of the language
Yes!! Well if we take the tunnel on the way back we’ll let you know :) I’m sure they will have English signposts as they had some french ones going into France :)
Thank you for watching 😀
I am proud to say I was your 1k liker 😁
Thank you for this video
Ooh thank you! That is quite an achievement for us 🤗
I seen videos of the Eurotunnel here on RUclips and they are amazing. One day I am going to ride the train from France to the UK. Going to live in France one day. Just got to know the UK drives on the left and France drivers on the right. I am an American who been to both the UK and France. Both London and Southampton in the UK and Le Havre in northwestern France. Le Havre was the only city I've been to in France. It was beautiful.
Ooh you’ve got to a treat coming then next time you explore either country. South France is absolutely gorgeous and if you get a chance to see Scotland I think you’ll be blown away by that too! Thanks for watching!
It's called Le Havre, not le harve. It means 'the port'
@@PlanB_ Yes, I know is means 'the port.' I Misspelled 'Le Havre' because I was typing too fast.
@@PlanB_ Do people like you have anything better to do than just being a busybody? Well, I'm learning how to speak French or 'francais' and I just learn the metric system. 110 km/h.
Back to 'Le Havre.' It means ''the harbour'' in British English or ''the port.'' Its inhabitants are known as Havrais or Havraises. It is a nice city. Seeing your name, you are from the European country of The Netherlands. You're Dutch. I don't like Scandinavian people because they are ice-cold, anti-social and think they are better than everybody. They find talking to people in public to be weird. Also they will not talking to you unless they know you and what you are talking to them about gives them value. I just keep to myself. I'll talk to people, if they act normal around me. I know The Netherlands isn't part of Scandinavia and I know some Europeans don't care what you think or what you are saying to them. Some will ignore you if you ask them a question on where to get to somewhere in Europe or anything. The French hate small talk and will avoid that. That's how some people are. Can't get upset about it. America is a terrible country with it's mass shootings and poor quality of life. I know countries outside of America have their problems and aren't far from perfect, but their problems aren't in the extreme like America's problems. ItsPlanB NL, you're not going to say anything, but I am just going to leave you some to read about. Ignore me or respond to me. I don't care. Got to much of that in the USA and Canada. Lol.
@@newmanchester8504 bruh u good ??..
Great video
Thanks a lot!
thank you for this, it's good to see what it's like. We're about to maybe do the same. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison/cost/benefit of this vs taking a ferry?
Thanks for watching! :) I think the ferry was actually cheaper (when we were looking it was just under £100), but it would have taken pretty much the whole day and we heard that it’s not as easy as taking the tunnel 😄 we were lazy and went for the easiest option :) the tunnel cost us £145 😃
Just learned today that it's actually a train instead of a long tunnel with constant car crashes and delays and that made so much more sense.
Yeah, it's a pretty efficient system. You should google some of the Alp tunnels if you want to see how impressive the driving through mountains tunnels are. Some of them are over 10 miles!
It has to be such a weird feeling, driving into a train. It all seems so efficient as well.
It is weird, apparently dogs get really confused that their vehicle isn’t moving but the train is 😂
we have a really nice tourist attraction in Slovenia - the car train. you drive on it with your car and park it, and then the train drives you around and you can enjoy really beautiful scenery and nature, because the train doesn't have a roof and you can watch around through your windows. it feels like you're on a pickup truck with your car 😃 awsome feeling, I need to do it again someday 😊
Thanks
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Good informative video
Glad you think so!
So cool 😎
Very efficient! Thanks for watching 😊
Brilliant video covering most of the questions I had. Lovely presentation too.
Thanks for watching Michael! 😀

Thank you 😀
Good video. The reason why they refrained from scrutinizing your passport properly is because because you look the part.
Helpful
Glad you thought so! ☺️
I am going to England in June and plan on doing this.
Hope you enjoy it!
I'm a writer and very grateful to you both
Hey. Thanks for the video, it looks easy enough.. I'm going to be doing the same soon in our converted camper, did you have any issues carrying gas cylinders for your cooker? Assuming you have one. THANKS !
Everyone has to drive through the car park these days before heading off to the loading queues, so you did not go wrong, have a safe trip....
Oh really? Haha now we know! Thank you! 😀
Did you know that there’s a second floor. Nice video! Keep the good work up.
That is news to me! We didn't know that!
@@OurWildHorizons You travelled in the high vehicles half of the train, at the front. Behind you was the double-decker car half. The trucks have a separate check-in and travel on a different train.

AHHH im late........' Au revoir....s'amuser .....grand amour '..............This is ACE guys.....never knew what happens going thru tunnel....think id do it....i was on foot going on ferry last time i went travelling to europe !! is it really expensive for a van ? ah Jakes a Davies..im a Davidson :) somewhere along the line were prob related..sounds so funny ' we were released into france ' Hahaha... i reckon id be nervous driving on other side of road...i hitched thru france /spain in 91...was awesome experince, hairbraiding to make money !!sleeping campsites, beaches, benches !!hope ya having fun? safe travels guys X*
You can definitely do it, only takes a day or so to get used to the other side...the roundabouts are the only tricky bits though! It's not too expensive but i think the tunnel price was higher than normal given the current times! Reading all your comments make it seem like you have lived a true adventure, have you ever considered writing a book with them!? That would be amazing to read!
@@OurWildHorizons def a plan.def would love to be in a van , hitchhiking was fun then, but not so sure about doing it these days ....yes i have put together bits and bobs and wanted to write a book ....just dont know how to go about it all....i have folders of poetry and songs iv written too.....usually give them away !!! x*********x
Traveling through bedrock with the English channel raging above you. When I go through underwater tunnels, it's crazy to think what you're actually doing and how it got built.
Useful, thanks! How much time before your train should you get to Folkestone?
It is quite a wit actually, I think its 90 mins before but 45 mins before departures
Very informative. Would love to try it, but not possible.
Well you’ve seen what it’s like now so that’s something! 😄
Wow
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. My wife and I are planning a trip to Belgium and Holland on the euro tunnel. May I ask, how much does it cost roughly? 6.5 meters motorhome
Ohh I'm not sure exactly but you can review the prices on the website before you purchase them. I think we paid about £140??
Huh the south of france near strasbourg haha ? 5:02 Anyways cool video thanks, now I know how the tunnel experience is for vehicles.
Thank you for this video! How long did you have to wait until te train took off? :)
Only about 10 minutes, it was all bay efficient! But will depend on whether you’re one of the first or last to embark.
And now it’s time to start the adventures!
Yipee!!
How do you go driving from the left hand side to the right hand side of the road in a right hand drive vehicle? Can you do this for a certain amount of time before it needs to be converted into a left hand drive vehicle? Hope this question isn't too confusing
Yeah Google mate
“Around the world with the Rubber Duck” is an old song about a rebellious truck driver. This Chunnel would have been a help to him. I miss old Rubber Duck.
Thats cool, thanks for the video
Hi am german resident and have recently purchased car from uk so which docs do they ask for at euro tunnel as have not registered it yet in germany?
I’m not sure as we’ve never been asked for any documents while crossing that border. But surely a valid insurance and green card?
Great video! But i still have a question. Do you have to buy the tickers for the Euro Tunnel at the Tunnel itself of do you have to buy them online?
Both. But it's cheaper if you buy online and a few weeks before you want to travel.
@@peterkelly2492 alright, thank you very much :]
As they said above! Can’t also get booked out in the busy periods 😃
Awesome. Makes me super excited about heading to Europe one day in the van! Thank you for sharing and we love that you just turned right lol! Max (@Ittakesajourney) x
Thank you!! Hahaha we had no clue where we were going 😂😂 as per usual 😁
Dear couple, Did you use before the Euro-Tunnel as passangers into train passangers from St. Pancras to Gare du Nord?
No that’s a separate service called the Euro Star, which is pretty cool as well!
I don't think I would even consider the Ferry it's just soo easy & around £100 either way for a van I couldn't complain
Yeah so easy and a really good price!! 😀😁😄
Do they check your documents like insurance papers printed or in the phone or not necessary to show
They only checked our passports but that's not to say they won't ask for them if they want to do a more thorough check 😊
Maybe I could be mistaken, but Makes any sense to CK passports after your were inside. What would happen if there was a problem with the passport, do you back up and stall the whole operation?
I’m not sure but it was quite efficient so I don’t think you’d hold up traffic! You have to enter the details online beforehand so I guess that’s when any issues would be found! 😃
Hmm, maybe we need a tunnel between Florida and Peurto Rico?
Haha, that would be pretty handy wouldn’t it!
Hi.. how much does it cost ? Is there a loo on the train ? Thank you ☺️
Hello, the price fluctuates, you can check it on the website for when you want to go but we paid about £130 for a last minute ticket. Not sure about the toilets as we didn’t leave the van, it’s only a 30 min journey though and there’s toilets in the departure lounge cafe area 😀
Thank you for this, however, I thought you actually drove through the tunnel. Does it get confusing suddenly to be driving on the wrong side after leaving the train? Once aboard are passengers restricted to stay in their car? How is the toll charged? Size, weight or just a flat rate?
It's been many years since I used the tunnel, but when I did you were free to get out of your car during the journey. Obviously you can't go far because you're still sealed into the train, but you could still at least stretch your legs.
That is so fuckin cool thanks!
Feels like driving a left hand vehicle on the right side would really take some getting used to.
Cool. How much are the tickets?
All depends on when you purchase them and what kind of vehicle you have but from our experience they're around £120 one way
Did they do any baggage checks or anything similar
Sometimes they just pop their heads in the van and check under the bed. Sometimes with a dog sniffing. But we've never had anyone go through our things.
What a life you guys are living being free souls, I wish I can have this much liberty and freedom to enjoy life but I guess being tied with commitments and overheads, it’s not so easy
It's crazy that you can travel 40 minutes and be 1 hour in the future.
So cool isn’t it! We used to backpack around Asia and crossing borders on foot meant we could take a step into a new time zone which I always thought was so cool!
@@OurWildHorizons wow I've subscribes also have you been to Australia?
What was security like?? Did they check ur bags or anything?
We didn’t have any checks, they just made sure any gas we had was turned off 😀
@@OurWildHorizons ok thanks!
I had always thought you get out onto a train. This was so useful thanks
Glad it was helpful!
What is oxygen levels like inside the van
Didn’t notice any changes, plus it’s only under ground for 20 minutes so any change isn’t noticed in that time frame
probably going to france in a few months with my family, hopefully it goes well 😎 i hope there’s wifi there
You’ll love it! We didn’t have any issues with our phone data signal at all about there 😊
Ok so you drive onto a train and the train transports you through the tunnel. You’re not actually driving the length. That’s wild. Did not know that. Thanks for the video
Will the Eurotunnel be closed now after Brexit?
I don’t think it will be closed, there will just be more paperwork/ visas involved ☺️😊
Hey lovely video, why didn't you have to go through French Customs? Or show Vaccine passports?
Thank you so much for watching our video 😊 Because this video was filmed and uploaded before the vaccine was created and before the strict rules came in, that information just wasn’t needed at the time we entered france 😊 it was October 2020 😊
With the Eurotunnel and also the Eurostar, you do both countries Passport Control and Customs on one side of the channel. So when going from England to France it is done at Folkstone and when going from France to England it is done in Calais.
"Not the most exciting video" - No, it wasn't exciting but it was pretty useful. I've barely driven in the UK and soon i'm driving to Belgium so the more info I have, the better. Thanks!
Beware the round abouts in the UK, there’s many and you enter the circle the wrong way. I never got use to that.
Thanks for watching! Hope you trip to Belgium went well :)
I worry what would happen if the train crashed with all those loose vehicles, but thinking about it, being in a cage designed for crashes inside another cage designed for crashes is probably the safest place to be...in a crash
train crashes are extremely rare, like very rare.
For sure! I like your outlook 😀
Shortly after the tunnels opened there was an accident in the south tunnel I believe. The fire raged to over 1500 degrees C. The train and all vehicles aboard pretty much melted and were unrecognizable. Remarkably there were no fatalities but that particular tunnel was closed for over 6 months.
Greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩 , amazing experience.
Thank you! We love Indonesia ❤️
Buy a Ticket per car or per person?
It’s per vehicle 😀
Strasbourg is in the South of France now? The locals must be loving the improved weather. Great video and really helped. Thanks.
We were heading south and got mixed up! Not quite the glorious weather of the south!
“Well dodgy” 😂
I think that's a great comment! 😀
😂😂😂😂
We should teach that phrase to our students 🤣
Hahaha omg can you imagine 😂😂😂😂
Hello , is it bad for claustrophobic people?
How are you when you’re in your vehicle in general? Since you stay in the vehicle we were completely fine with it! Plus you know that it is over in 35 minutes which is far better than being on a ferry or plane 😊
But you can't see outside or open the vehicle's door or window?.. you are closed there for 35 minutes ...
I heard you can get out of your car and go to the toilets, is that true
What if a car breaks down while driving into a carriage?
No idea, I'm sure they've got methods. There's loads of trains, not just the one so I guess you just get towed when the queue in front of you clears.
I thought you physically drove your car in a tunnel from uk to France - gosh I’m quite a plonker
I used to think that too until I took it for the first time on a school trip! Easy mistake to make 😀
There’s a really good video and a ‘true’ step by step guide that shows the euro tunnels pathetic attempt at signage. It’s no wonder people end up on car parks they don’t want to be in, and if everyone says oh it’s simplicity itself, then nothing will get better! They need a company like Amazon to streamline the process and traffic maze!
They love trying to get you to spend money in their shops and make you go all around the shop car parks first, pfft! 😊
I'd be worried about how to get back. 😆
Haha, it's pretty much identical on the way back!
@@OurWildHorizons thanks for reassurance guys. Hope you had an amazing adventure 😄
Did they check vaccine status?
This was before the vaccines were rolled out but we crossed over again recently and they didn’t check anything but we had uploaded some documents on their portal beforehand. Seems like it can be vaccine status, proof of recovery or a negative test atm 😀
The security is shocking.
It’s very European :) maybe shocking for Americans!
Try doing it today .... 24/07/22 ......😳🤷♂️
We did it again recently and it was just as easy :) they didn’t ask for any special documents :)
Jeremy Clarkson didn’t want to hear health and saftey when he was in the train
Haha!
