Step by Step Drive Through Guide to the EuroTunnel Check-in and Boarding Process at Folkstone

  • It was a very quiet late Friday afternoon crossing in my Motorhome so I decided to keep my Dash-Cam footage and make this "drive through" to help anyone who is wondering what the process of getting on the train is.
As I was in a Motorhome, the boarding was into a large single decker carriage. Cars without roofboxes or roof racks are usually placed in double decker carriages, however, the boarding process is exactly the same.
As mentioned at the end of the video, Calais is similar but slightly different so watch until the end for the subtle differences.

Thanks, this was very useful, I was thinking of taking the tunnel last time I went to Britain but it looked pretty claustrophobic on the pictures with these 2 level couches. Taking a motor home looks more pleasant.

Nice Video, I've only been through there in the dark, it looks different in the light, If you have pets coming back from Calais to the UK, the first stop on arrival at Calais is pet check in, on the right hand side as you approach the human check in booths,

I loved Benny Hill's comedy about digging the tunnel. "How long have you been at this hole boring bit?"

I have never actually seen how this tunnel works. This is just too cool. I didn't know you could put your vehicles on a train!

+TheRenaissanceman65 Actually there was at least initially to follow up the rail tunnel with a second road tunnel, ultimately the funding to do so never actually materialised but it was certainly seriously considered though the financing for the road tunnel never actually materialised. Wouldn't surprise me if a fixed road link does get built eventually, especially with newer construction techniques like prefabricated submerged concrete tunnels which are significantly cheaper than bored tunnels. A bridge perhaps using one or more artificial islands is certainly a possibility with modern technology too obviously would need to be a very high bridge as the channel is a major shipping route but that is a problem which was solved with the likes of the Copenhagen - Malmo bridge which of course had to allow shipping traffic into and out of the Baltic Sea etc.

They did it this way because cars emit CO2, CO, NOX, etc. and they'd have to build ventilation towers in the water to clean the air. What's more, people crash cars which would block up the tunnel -- which is deep under the water so any help has to come from the ends of the tunnel. Since the train is electric, the only things using oxygen in the tunnel are humans, and the trains themselves create enough of a draft to cycle that amount of oxygen around.
A nice side effect is that the train goes 100mph in the tunnel, faster than you could safely drive in it.
There are other places you can put your car on a train. For instance in the U.S., the Autotrain service takes your car from northern Virginia to Florida nonstop -- this is to save you the trouble of driving but you still get to have your car on the other end instead of renting. Then you and your family stay in a bedroom on the train and have food in the onboard restaurant, etc.

They used to do cheap crossings in the evening; after 18:00, it was £9 return. As Craig said, they will offer you an earlier train if there's space available; one time I turned up at the terminal, was offered the next train leaving in about 15 minutes, did the crossing then went straight to the hypermarket next door to the French terminal. Bought the stuff I was after (some booze for a party we were having and some ciggies from one of the tobacconists. Headed back to the French terminal, where again I was offered the next train. Ended up doing the entire round trip from Folkestone in just under two hours. :)
