I had the same problem. I cleaned the yellow ribbon cable (at both end) with isopropyl alcohol after that i made sure that its conneted tight. Now it works perfect. (The foil thing did not work. Its most likely the yellow ribbon and not the button at the bottom of the laser.
Having the same issue with mine, mines the 77001 model, the ribbon is fine and the laser still works because it lights up when I put my finger in front, I tried with some tinfoil and still grind however I tired only like a very very small slither gonna try again
Mine makes the buzzing noise but it doesn't come apart like yours does, weirdly enough. I tried removing all the screw but when one side of the shell seems to be stuck together and I see ribbon cables. I don't want to brute force it.

Sometimes PS2's will be faulty and only play the DVD discs or the CD discs (The blue discs). Is your Crash Bandicoot game one of these, and the rest of your games the other?
@@consolecollecting1381 think I’m wrong on this particular one because I just fixed one with the same exact issue and it was the laser. The two things I’ve had cause it are pins 1,2, or 10 from the ribbon cable under the assembly plugged into the back and the laser. It could also be the laser motor home switch but I haven’t had one with that yet.

One screw is under the sticker, the rest are under rubber feet. The shell has clips on the side.

I think it’s actually bad contacts on the cable. Pin 1,2, or 10.

True, but if you don't move your PS2 around it can easily last several months. It's a shame the PS2 is a faulty console.
