- just my attempt at a repair video on how to fix some common problems with a ps2 fat.
Please note the ps2 will either have those clamps or a screw holding the laser rods in place.... Never unscrew those white screws that look like gears, those are important and shouldnt be moved at all.... I was afraid after watching this video people might misunderstand my directions.......
10 years old and still helping people out! loved the video brother thanks!
I know this video is 9 years old, but with your help, I've finally fixed my PS2.
Now I can finally revisit the original SoTC again~
The Nerd of The East doin tht rn❤️
you absolute legend!!!! was heartbroken after finding my old ps2 in the attic and seemed completely broken. works like a dream now. cheers!!
Your video is still helping people 13 years later. Amazing how much of a difference cleaning both lasers can make. Plus either bending the arm that makes contact with the corkscrew thing, or propping up that corkscrew with paper for those of us with consoles that have that arm made entirely of plastic, eliminates a lot of the grinding, if not all of it. Cheers! This fixed almost all of the DREs I had with CDs. Only one of them, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 for PS1, continues to not read, because the little teeth on the plastic arm in my console are almost entirely gone. Paper or bending can only do so much. Every single other CD I've tried so far reads, so this is a fantastic fix.
Why did Sony think the plastic was a good idea here? Who knows. I ultimately need to replace that arm. I don't know if you can get it alone or what, but that would be the true fix for my console at this point.
Absolute legend, this just fixed my gen 1 silver ps2. Underground 2 all night for me baby let’s f’n go!!!!
14 year old video, just helped me repair both of my ps2’s. Huge thankyou to you!
Yo thanks for helping me 10 years after uploading this i hope you have a nice lfe bro you deserve it
My PS2 only started getting the grinding issue, and thanks to this video, it performs better now.
Love the focus.
Cleaning the bottom lens was perfect... I had no idea. Once I got it cleaned I was able to play my games again. Thanks again.
Thanks dude, I think this will finally resolve my issue. I like the quick'n dirty presentation, clear and to the point.
I watched all of the ps2 fixing videos and yours the best. No shitty intro, no bla bla, just what can be done. Thx a lot!
Thanks! This is the only video that shows how to fix this grinding noise issue.
Thank you! You saved me!
This solution worked for me!
Except, my PS2 version had plastic part (not metal like yours), so instead of bending, I have heated it with a burning match (keeping it not too close, so plastic doesn't burn) and then slightly bended it while it was still hot.
Cleaning the lens underneath worked amazingly well! mine would only read 2 games now it reads god of war 1,2 witch the guy at the game store said wouldn't even work on the fat consoles. it also plays every game I put in it and most load in seconds after start up. I got my ps2 from a neighbor kid who put discs with dirt standing in them too. He had it in his closet for over a year. And it had a refurb sticker on it.This is my favorite vid ever. subbed for sure thanks!
My son has had his ps2 for 2 years now; he has only been able to play on it maybe 10 times. It started grinding and wouldn't read discs. We watched another tutorial on RUclips and the last one he had broke; your tutorial was awesome. Thank you so much!!
Brilliant- this worked perfectly. Got rid of the grinding noise on my second hand ps2
Thanks alot man!!!! Im glad i could help you out. It always makes me feel good when i hear a ps2 has been braught back to life... Youre number 3 i think that i helped. =)
It’s working now! Thanks for showing me how to fix my beloved, ancient PS2
Thanks so much for this tutorial. worked like a charm. bought a used ps2 and none of my blue discs or ps1 games were working. now they work great.
Thanks a lot! This video is great. My playstation hasn't loaded a game this fast in a long time. Now I can play Ty the Tasmanian Tiger again.
Guys their is an easier solution to this. The moving spiral drill thing that spin has to be lifted a tiny bit so that the other part does not slip. I took the bolts off the drill thing and put apiece of paper under it to lift it and works great now!
I can confirm this works. I have an SCPH-30001R that has a fully plastic arm. I didn't want to bend it, so I went with lifting the metal corkscrew thing with some paper. It eliminated most of the grinding and DRE issues I had with CDs on this console. The little teeth on the plastic arm thing in my console is just too far gone for paper to help get my copy of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 to read in it. It still makes nasty grinding sounds and doesn't read. But every other CD I throw at it works perfectly, which is great. Too much paper, and the corkscrew thing won't move smoothly with the arm. Too little, and the gears lose contact with the corkscrew thing.
@@NightimeDemonmaybe the plastic piece you have is just too much worn out
Why easier? Maybe it works better? Which one is the best for 50004
Okay i figured it out today on my own, i did this method because i didnt want to touch the lens, and its easier and faster.. and for me it works great the noise is completally disappeared. If someday it happear again i will try the bend method
Thanks for these tips, just repaired mine last night and it's working again!
2nd hand PS2 wouldn't play my PS1 discs amd struggled with PS2 games; I tried this and (touch wood) it's running great now. Thanks so much.
Dude u are my hero! i thought i would ever run my ps2 again....now to fix chrono cross and im good to go!
Thank you bro, I've looked at over 20 videos and forums and most don't know what the grinding is from or say you adjusted the white laser gear too far. I tried every click on it and still the grinding. A good clean of both the lens and bending that metal or in my case plastic part fixed it. You are a gentleman and a scholar!
Up the fuckin Irons,
Brentos \m/
Thanks man. Your a great help. Because four month ago I brought a ps2 on eBay in March(that’s when the pandemic came) it was working great but then a month later it was making a grinding noise. I open up my ps2 and I use the grease on the laser rails and I clean the laser as well it works fine now.
@MrAlishy
sometimes the plug in the back needs a little bend.... try wigle the plug up and down and see if it gets beter. i would also try different plugs before any serious attempts are made
Thank you, this video really helped!! Just one tip, in my case i had to really bend the gripping arm as slightly bending it didn't make it catch on the rail.
@Lukeno52
its amazing how many people this vid helped... im glad you got it working... nothing like getting a great piece of hardware back to 100% man.. great job indeed.
Thanks man, I fixed the issue. If it weren't for your video, I would have been sad for not being able to play any of my games.
@tyson067
im glad i was able to help you out... def worth it for some chrono cross... that game has some of the best music
Thank you for your video. I've got a lot of ps1 classics to play again and you've saved me from buying another ps2. I know it's a dated console now but what can I say, I love the classics! Thanks again!
Thanks alot man! I didnt event have to go through with all of this and my ps2 already seems to be working better! Thank you!
YOU HAVE SAVED MY GAMING LIFE!!!!! I OFFICIALLY LOVE YOU!
@KKKSuperFan
yes that needs to be connected in order to get the system to fire up. Be careful when reattacing the cable to the system. It could be tricky. Us a smal flat head to grip between the 2 tip on the one end end push it in the slot carefully... Its easier if you life the system out of the bottom case by removing the screw that holds on the controller port. there may be other screws but im not sure off the top of my head.
Did this (bending) probably over a year ago and my machine is still alive and well :)
Only recently it has started making very slight noise during SOME games but Im going to lube it up soon to see if thats going to help it at all.
Really good and helpfull video.
+shotgunmasterQL hey! what kind of lube should you apply on the rails? thanks
Miguel Patata
Vaseline. I heard the non-sprayable is better and more plastic friendly.
I heard some people said good butter also does the trick but vaseline is probably the more proper one. Just make sure you dont go overboard.
shotgunmasterQL thank you for answering in such short notice! take care
white lithium grease
my ps2 makes buzzing noise when I play a game then it freezes
i think its the disc slipping, is it a ps2 fat? if so the problem could be with the spindle that clamps onto the disc to spin it. an easy fix is putting two strips of electrical tape one on each side of the hole in the middle of the disc. if that fixes your problem then you have a worn down spindle. there are guides online to fix that, not sure how well they work though.
silosis yes it fat ps2 I no what problem was I saved fifa game I tried to load it I was on transfer it froze then I heard buzzing noise
amer khan i see, glad to see it wasnt anything worse
IT'S WORKING!!! IT'S WORKINGGGG!!!!
Seriously thank you though. I've been adjusting the laser up and down trying to find a sweet spot for like 40 minutes. Then I find this video and clean that second laser under the regular one. Booted up the game before the home screen even finished loading. Thank You!
THANK YOU THANK YOU! I just cleaned the "bottom" lens and my ps2 plays perfect!!! Great advice!!
im glad you got it worked out man! always a good feeling for me =) if you have any other console related problems maybe i could help out let me know man!
We're can i find that piece that pointed with the screwdriver ? at 2:50
This fixed my noisy PS2 perfectly! One step I highly reccomend adding though, is to clean all the old grease off of the axles and worm screw (the latter will probably require a Q-tip and toothpick to get it out of all the grooves), and replace it with fresh grease (I use SuperLube silicone grease, though I hear lithium and calcium sulfonate greases work fine too). The grease in my drive was very dry, but now everything works perfectly smooth and the drive is whisper silent.
I know this comment is 5 years old but what model number of super lube did u use? I looked it up and theres so many different kinds
@@myretroworld1121 Look up "Super Lube Synthetic Grease with Syncolon PTFE." It comes in a gray tube.
I used the same stuff and it worked VERY well. I also replaced the disc tray belt and now that doesn’t drag anymore. Very happy with the turnout
Is the white piece with the teeth replaceable? Because I think that's the problem with my system. Or at least, the noise my PS2 makes is very similar to the noise that piece made when it didn't catch. Anyway, you mentioned that simply bending it down isn't a permanent solution, so I'm wondering if it's possible to get a replacement for it? Or would that fix not last any longer than bending it?
Fantastic video and very informative. You need a tripod though dude! I was going cross-eyed while having my mind blown with your guru lvl knowledge.
thanks a lot man,i just got desperate at my ps 2 and just wanna try this coz i practically doesn't care anymore if it broke and honestly i dont think this would work,but it turned out wrong.The grinding noise stopped and it can play games like normal again.Once again thanxx
well youre one of the few man check the comments and youll see this vid helped alot of people... Im sure youll be using it someday
A simple trick to fix the problem? Awesome. I got 2 cheap PS2-s on a fleamarket and they both have this same problem.
very simple to follow Vid, i managed to fix my PS2 in less time than it took to watch the vid . Many thanks :) @danks
I baught a PS2 of ebay that was in very nice condition, but cut scenes in games would skip a bit and music would skip in game play, I slightly bent the worm screw guide on the laser works great 😁 thank you.
Didn't know the grinding noise was caused by that. Thank you for the information!
Thanks homie, got my old ps2 workin now 👍
Thanks man, this video made it so I could enjoy playing Star Wars Battlefield II again. XD
You should thank god you didn't have 9 disfunctional games, like me.
True, true.
@SilentSniper17
no problem man.... im glad i could help.... i surprised how many people this video helped...... feels good
I'm having a grinding noise where the laser tries to go beyond the motor that spins the games can you tell me what mite be the problem thanks.
one of the gears might be broken
Thank you. I can now play all the Gran Turismo I want again.
My ps2 had the grinding and read problem bent the plastic piece down and cleaned the bars the laser slides on and worked great might b a 9 year old video but it helped me thanks
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! YOU JUST FIXED MY PS2!!! YOU ARE GOD!
@thewizard773
try lubing up the metal bars that allow the laser to slide up and down... also there is a plastic tooth looking thing that holds the laser on the bar make sure its not dirty and clean it with rubbing alcohol.
Thanks man no more clicking/grinding and the game doesn't freeze anymore
Hi! Great video!!, My mother and i, trying to do routine maintainence, took our ps2 to a "not turning on" point from which we couldn't wake it up untill yestarday, we replaced some blown fuses and it incredibly turned on! Now it won't show any display, no video, no audio signal, things here in Venezuela, are deeply hard, so we're working on the console by ourselves, please be kind and tell us what you think about the problem. Whatever you can tell us wil be very helpful!! Ours is a SCPH-79001 Thank you!
Me in 2020 trying to fix a ps2 when the ps5 have been released
Thank you!! I removed the laser and cleaned the teeth and bent it downward and the noise is gone!
Just in the nick of time. Yes many videos don't show working under the lens where the real Lazer is. Thanks!
Thank you sooo much. my ps3 just took a shit on my and my dog just knocked my ps2 of a shelf and busted that too. Your vid helped me fix it.
ok so...legend of legaia is playing, but not FF9. I have done everything i can do to my ps2 and yet that is what i get. disc two of FF9 works, but when i change back to disc one it suddenly says not the right disc. what am i to do?
thanks man i look at other videos those did not help but your did man i gave you a thumbs up thanks again bro
@956Joeboy
i would still follow this guide... therers a chance the laser is so dirty its not reading... also follow the other steps i outline....
My clip to stop the grinding noise, wasn't metal, it was plastic so I can't bend it without snapping it... What do I do?
i open up my one the part thats making a grinding noise that part is made out of plastic...
what do i do
The quality was... Not so good but I was able to follow it and now I don't hear grinding or get discount read errors. Thanks a lot a lot a lot
thanks dude for the help out,ur the best damn guy ever thanks,my grinding noise from my ps2 has stop thanks and it works much better :xD
OMG thanks, man! Now my PS2 reads PS1 discs no problem.
@deadine162
try lubing up the rod that allows the laser to slide up and down it could be dry
I have the plastic bit attached to the laser, so i had trouble bending it. What i ended up doing was putting an already stapled staple in between the screw and the laser body causing the plastic bit to bend down towards the toothed bar.
Nice vid. I was having the grinding noise problem, and I took it apart, and found the little tag connecting the laser part to the twisty bar was all clogged with grime and hair - eww!! But my dad helped me clean it with wd40 and we got spinning smoothly again. Thankfully, i didn't have to take anything else out or bend anything into shape. Looks like I won't have to fork out for a new console just yet!
okay but my ps2 slim just started to do that after i turned it on for the first time in a while today and i freaked out bc i also just cleaned my ps4 today bc the ventilation was really loud... but at least i didn’t need to open my ps4 ahhh i'm scared of having to do this
thank you tho this video is really helpful
@seltranY
most likely it is loose solder joints on the motherboard. its a pain in the ass to get to but most likely thats the problem
my ps2 has a plastic piece that you described that goes on the rod with the teeth. I can hear the laser going back and forth now. Any advice?
yeah how to fix that
Awesome !!! Thanks I got my ps2 working again !!
thanks alot man! its still processing like always so the cid quality should improve which should help atleast one person out there with these problems..... I picked up a flood light that helped me to get it more clear now i just need a tripod so i can do overhead recording.... then ill be on my way i think... im glad you liked it...
Thank you so much. my ps2 (my first ps2 I've had since i was 12) was making the grinding sound and a your video did the trick. ^^
thank you man now i can play Spyro
best tutorial on youtube .
Thank you so much just fixed my ps2
man I will totally try this, mine reads games, but sometimes it gets "stuck" and i hear the grinding noise. Some games play (mostly) fine, but some, regardless of scratches in the ps2 disc, just freeze while loading game content (usually they play the start screen). This video has shed some light on my REAL problem. I guess the laser reads but the machanism grinds man. hopefully the screwdrivers I have will be slim enough, if not, fuck it man, I'm making myself a vodka screwdriver or a white russian.
I fixed my PS2 one time, but some months after that, the laser died, I had to change it, but just after a year it fails again! :S I'll try this too!! I have also have bought an emergency PS2 Slim :D
k ty for the info the grinding gear sound was driving me nuts ^^
btw mine seems to have a white plastic bracket for the gear thing you bend down any ideas or tips for those models lol
i was thinking on a very tiny tilted ring between bracket and the barce for it but i just wanna be sure before i try anything and destroy my system :p
My only problem is the grinding noise. We're can i get that piece that you touch with the screwdriver?
I have done both fixes and the grinding still happens. The laser is near the center spindle and then the cork rod drive just spins and makes noise. Looking at it when this happens it is spinning the laser towards the center and it seems like it doesn’t sense that it has already arrived and keeps spinning even though i have bent it enough.. it seems too over power the parkway and doesn’t stop when it reaches the end. The disk doesn’t spin is that still part of this issue? Or another?
Any idea of what to do? Or should I be looking for another PS2?
I love u man, you saved my ps2!
How do you remove the top of the PS2 ?
I removed all 4 rubber plugs / screws & it still doesn't want to budge.
One side (Slot card) will give more than the other
I put it back together it makes more noise than it did before but the disk door opens up alot better now out of 20 times it only got stuck twice so I guess it helped. I think I just need to re surface my game. I also did the laser cleaning with 70% alc. Not sure why it's louder now though.
It works! Thanks for the video mate!
I hear a grinding or clicking noise and all the games work but they lag and don't load in environments properly. Could this be a similar problemm?
If dust is getting on the lense, then make sure dust is not on top of the disk before you insert into the machine.
I have the PAL ps2 and i cant bend the piece because it was made of plastic ;_;
Charlton369 i had same problem but you can still bend it. It only needs milimeters so it can be bent slightly. I used needle nose pliers to slightly bend it and now my ps2 works smooth no more grinding. 😃
Eric Zawadzki can you help me? I don't know how to do the things he does from 3:02 (taking apart the lens)
Having this exact problem that plastic is THICK and wont bend I tried warming it a little with a lighter so it bends, but it still makes grind noises
3d print
That plastic piece is real trash. You can tell by the treads that are glued on to the plastic. I don't know what they were thinking when they made that. It must be a rushed launch release version to get it out before Christmas. The treads on the plastic must have slipped off track. It works for now. Funny thing is, is that it boots the game faster than the one I usually use. I guess I have to clean that one.
Is the grinding noise related to some read problems ? My games start glitching (graphicaly) when the grinding gets constant and usually the machine freezes because it cant read the game.
Im going to try bend that clip....
The girinding will only worsen resulting in no disc reads. Just follow the video and youll be fine. I def suggest the ps2 fat over the slim. It is just built better in every way. Just like any other system old or modern. They make the first run the best then make a cheaper priced version once they got you hooked.From my experience i see way more problems with the slims and they are just built cheaper. The laser is def more vulnerable to problems. I can always fix a ps2 fat but not always a slim
I will check to see if there is a way to get those gears back to original position. If there is ill send you some pics.... Double check to make sure you have all ribbon cables attached correctly and the rods are nice and lubed for optimal sliding....
I, myself have the same grinding noise, it's not that strong, but it's definitely noticeable. Regardless- my PS2 reads disks perfectly and works really fast, the noise has no effect upon gameplay, though. After I watched this video I realized that I might be forced to repair it sooner or later... BTW, what's your opinion should I get a PS2 FAT SCPH 39004 or stay with my PS2 Slim 70004? I heard that the Fat version has a way better ventilation system and a more durable laser?
Just use it vertical, i have the same situation of yours 15 years later.
