Pro tip: an exhaust fan can be great, but it will pull overspray into the area that's not masked off. I'd recommend a single, small fan. Something like a 9" fan. Also, make sure there is enough incoming air. Super important. This build doesn't have that. The intake needs to be twice the size of the exhaust hole, and that's when there's no fan. Plan for 3x with a small fan. If using air filters, factor in the loss -- roughly 10% as a general rule. Nice build!
I copied your design with GREAT results. Thank you! For the door hinges I ground the non glues hinge tubes up to 3/4” on my disc sander and took off about 1/8” all around. Works beautifully and the door operates SUPER smooth.

For diy designs where fans won't be exhausting air directly outside anyhow a positive pressure booth, as in having fans blow filtered air into the booth is going to give you a more dust free environment. The second tip is...PVC Primer is just acetone with purple dye in it. So if you already have acetone you don't need PVC primer and if don't have acetone nail polish remover is also acetone and it's x4 cheaper than PVC Primer.
I built one exactly like this but I used 1x's instead of pipe but everything else pretty much the same. It works really good but I'm building a permanent spray booth in my shed so I can keep up with guitar orders. Great job yours looks great.
Use 12’ painters plastic and tape it to walls and ceiling. Make a box. I make x’s and t’s with tape to make it stay.Doesn’t need a frame unless it’s permenant.use em for a week and throw away.
Those fans are synchronous motors, they don't have brushes to cause sparks. The only thing in the fan that could cause a spark is the switch. Don't change fan speeds while painting and you shouldn't have any problems. On the small booth I made I use a power strip, remote from the booth, to turn on the fans and the light...... Oh, yea! The switch on the light can make sparks too.....! Going with the remote power strip is better.

I have a question, by the time you bought all the PVC and fittings, couldn't you have just started with a $80-100 canopy tent (like tailgaters use) and wrap the plastic around the sides?
Think I'm going to do this project. The one change I'll make is that I'll use build the walls independently and use snap saddles to connect them togother rather than tees

Little tip; you should add a couple more intake spots, having more outward pressure than inward pressure makes air & dust have a higher chance of finding it's way in thru places other than the filter. PC building has the same principal, having 1 more intake than outtake prevents dust from finding it's way in through seams.
Good thinking! It actually turned out that this choice is a good one as the pressure creates this vacuum effect (provided you can replace the filters as often as you can replace the paint) and in most cases the airflow pulls the (most of) over spray up and away from what I'm painting. I'm honestly not sure how another intake filter would help, but I'm happy with the way it works now. If you try it on your own, let me know if it works out!!
Yeah, cuts cleaner too. I even picked one up a few times... then thought, hmm for the same price, I could get some other tool. Since I built this my family bought me a miter saw, so I'll probably utilize that for PVC cutting until I finally pick one up. As often as I cut PVC you'd think I'd have one... lol, maybe the next time I go to the big box.

Somebody mentioned in another video that it might be unwise to exhaust the potentially explosive air through the fans... ie electrical spark in fan and kabooooommm. Maybe better to blow air INTO the booth from the fan (positive pressure) and exhaust through your door vent.
The box fan probably has a single-phase AC induction motor, which is brushless and therefore shouldn't create sparks (unless it fails). The motor may have different coils for different fan speeds. You might get a spark from the switch if you turn a fan on or off (or changed the speed), but you can turn it on before you start painting, and give the vapors a few minutes to clear before turning it off. Just found AJ Wilson's similar comment further down. So treat this comment as coming from the Department of Redundancy Department. Using the fan to supply air to the booth instead of exhausting air from the booth would probably create undesirable drafts in the booth. To understand why, try standing on the intake side of a box fan vs. standing on the output side.
Hopefully the intake fan idea will not create too much draft as it is pushing through a filter so should disperse the air a but and just create a pressure rather than draft
for painting cars this wouldn't work. the booth needs to be virtually airtight, you have major gaps everywhere including all around the fans. if it doesn't stick it's because the plastic you're using needs to be substituted or a new kind of tape used. also the walls shouldn't collapse, you're supposed to use slightly positive pressure so dust from outside doesn't get sucked in
In some DIY Spray Booth videos, people attach a aluminum tube to transport the air from the filters to the outside. Is that not necessary with your DIY Spray Booth? Nothing comes through the filters into the garage?
Absolutely, In fact I do not advise on not having the paint booth just blowing into a closed garage at all. When painting there are two things that we worry about. Overspray and the solvents. The fans and filters tend to the overspray… and unless you have really strong fans pulling a lot of air through solvent grade filters, then we aren’t doing anything to tend to solvents, which is why I highly, highly suggest keeping all the doors open when it’s in use. I use the paint booth primarily to keep the paint area “clean” so floating debris have less chance of getting on my item, the fans help pull all that over-spray and dust away from the item I’m spraying and keep the overspray out of the air. The other reason is that it will keep the overspray off your cars and your neighbor’s cars. Hope that helps.

yes, it's certainly a concern. so if you do the same make sure to use a brushless fan or a fan rated for hazardous conditions. I've been using a fan with filters for a long time and, luckily i haven't had any issues. but i do open the garage doors to provide more ventilation. Honestly, the fans i use are good for particulate removal, not solvent.
Any idea where I could get one of those without spending a fortune? I really like your idea but since I use mostly solvent based and aerosol paints I need to make sure I don't blow things up!
Unfortunately, no... which is why I use these box fans. I've read that some people have the fan to push air in from the top with a filter in front of it and then have a filter at the bottom, like I have in the door, so basically turn the fans around and flip the filters. A bit more expensive would be to buy a blower on craigslist and then seal off the motor itself. If you're able to do that, I would feel pretty comfortable. Otherwise, you may be looking for an industrial fan.
"Sucked the wall in" tells me you made the most common rookie mistake. (seen a bunch of videoes, making that mistake) You'd want the fans to blow the booth up, inflate. 1: You push/blow OUT any dust in any holes/crevases, whatever. 2: You don't have any paintfumes passing the electic motors.

Typically, I keep my garage door open with the side door open as well. You need to still worry about the fumes. The over spray is managed pretty well as long as the filters don't get too gunked up. I highly Highly suggest, to not spray with your doors closed. In fact, just don't do it. All those fumes are combustible.
use cheap clear silicon or whatever flexible caulk on the pvc pipe to hold on plastic 2 test to make shure it stick good may be smart...good job be blessed merry Christmas Jesus is king

I'm sure you have a compound miter saw, that is much easier than a hacksaw for cutting the pipe.

Most box fans use an eddy current motor which contain no brushes.
The only possible sparks are from the switches used to change speeds.
I think u could make this very durable by making it from 1x2 lumber and stapling plastic or even tarps to it

Yes, here is my thinking. I open the doors when using this booth. So the fumes get wafted out but the over spray doesn't end up on everything.

I'm not exactly sure, It's harder to remember now. I think I paid around $60 - $70 if I remember correctly.
it must work so well that, you make a video for a booth, but dont even turn it on, to show, how it works, or even if it works.
