There's so little room to apply new adhesive to the screen. Yikes. I don't get the back glass being glued on either. The last time I took apart a Motorola phone was the A855 and it was a nightmare and it seems little has changed!
I have 2 suggestions for anyone attempting to do this. 1. The earpiece screws are actually T3, at least mine were. 2. This LCD is exceptionally fragile! You need to stick the pry tool almost all of the way into the screen at the top and bottom, because there is a lot of adhesive around the front camera and the sensors at the bottom.
It is not a decorative bar. It is a ground bar for mod attachments. I've got a broken pin that you see above that bar and I'm trying to figure out if I can repair it.
As someone who likes taking things apart and putting them back together again, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for taking this one apart so I can see what's inside without risking my moto z.
+JerryRigEverything I love it but I like that design on the moto Z, I'd likely keep the 10 as my DD, I guess my question was how does the Z stack up? would it make a worthy companion device?
The adhesive on my phone is toast. The glass is lifting off so I can probably just lift it off, it's had a crack in the corner for about a year. Perfect time for a new battery too. Thank you ♥
Tried to replace the battery on this brick of a phone.. this video sure makes it look easy. I bought the tool, bought a battery, ended up breaking the glass trying to get the tool in on the first step. Sliced up my palm pretty good with the tool. Out $40 and went HRC on the phone with a hammer. Good times. Definitely my last Moto phone.
Wow I really love this phone and I've had it for probably about a year now but the only downside is the battery life, and seeing that repair is this time consuming and tedious, I think it might be a deal breaker for me to not go back to Motorola. Everything else about the phone is impeccable
Hi, very good video. I have one of these phones and need to replace the battery. This and other videos are going to help me do that. That being said, please be aware that the "decorative metal piece" is NOT DECORATIVE. Do NOT damage that piece! I am an electrical engineer who has worked in mobile phone development. That piece is for GROUND. It is important that this have a good connection to ground or the mods attached to the phone may not work reliably. This is especially true if you are using a battery mod. As an added bonus, this ground plate offers ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection. To everyone disassembling this phone, please be careful with this part. Another side note: you called the copper tape over the processor/etc. on the motherboard a "protective piece." This is true, but it should be noted that it not only acts as a heat spreader for the chips, but it also provides electromagnetic shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI). Regardless, thanks for the video! It is very helpful to see someone disassemble the phone, especially when it comes to the heating of the glue, which is almost an art it seems.
This video comes really handy now that there are hundreds if not thousands of faulty Moto Zs with broken batteries that Motorola\Lenovo are not willing to replace or repair without charging us.
about 2:25 you say the glass and display panel are "fused together as one" I bought an XT1650 (which is what the video appears to be) "for parts". The glass was loose - only needed a gentle pry with a fingernail and the whole thing (except for the small corner broken out) came right up - obviously the glass cover and display had been removed and replace without heating the glue to make it restick. The display was totally free of the glass and showed no traces of glue. While the glass was broken out around one corner it was not even cracked anywhere else. but the display was cracked all the way across it about horisontally right at the connection end and 1/3 of the way up and then diagonally across to the far end. There are no visible signs that the screen was ever fused to the glass. But my guess is that it was and the cracks resulted from a failed attempt to recover an intact screen from the broken glass. This raises the question: if you have one with a broken or cracked glass but the LCD display screen is intact, is there a way to remove the display from the cracked glass without ruining it? That would reduce a $100 parts bill to a less than $10 parts bill.
did you find anything more out on this? I got a great deal on a white Z and bought a Black front glass section from eBay for less than $10 - was hoping to change it to black. No glue required?
I wouldn't be brave enough to attempt such a repair. The pros in China have specialized jigs to cleanly scrape off the Optically Clear Adhesive, align the display with the cover glass, and heat the two halves with just the right amount of heat that won't damage the OLED pixels. It's a very precision job, to say the least.
Because it failed even after the repair! Didn't you see the way he threw his pry tools on the phone? This phone got him worked up! In short this phone a bitch.
I concur that the repair failed. There's no way that this screen can take the abuse from a heat gun unscathed. I just attempted the repair with a hair dryer and now the screen is absolutely ruined! Expensive lesson learned. Next time, I'll just get an iOpener from iFixit.
I own it too...it's a really great phone if you asked me but the only thing i don't like about it is the battery. Being idle drains the battery unlike any phone I've had. Bluetooth and gps drain the battery way too fast. But it's got fast charging though
I am very impressed with the moto z, but I'm seeing the inside of a manufacturing quality is poor Not the quality and arrangement of Samsung and Apple, but you are agree Rai
Hi Zack, amazing the z is so tuff with the way the build is. even the battery is not cemented in as well as most others you've disassembled. Also that's the shatterproof screen? so so thin. Super design there. Thanks.
Ben Hatch Take a cotton rag...and some toothpaste and wipe the camera lens with it. Takes a while but it does the trick, toothpaste acts like mild abrasive removing the scratches from lens.. Cheers!
Something no tutorial for replacing Moto Z batteries has mentioned, which I ran into while taking the glass off is that there are these two little springy thingies on the upper right-hand corner. I managed to bend mine out of place when I was prying the glass off. You can see them at 3:00. Hopefully I haven't ruined them.
You should make a video rating phones' (those you tested) durability in certain aspects of your tests. Screen anti scratch, bendability test , drop test, etc.
Every phone will have different ways to remove internal components. How do you know the exact procedure to do so? I am curious to know how you are able to do it easily. Your videos help people to know the procedure. Great work man.
I'm the moron who disassembled my phone before watching the video, so I'm pretty sure I either broke or threw away the little bracket for the LCD ribbon cable. I'm hoping that's there more or less to prevent the cable from slipping out, and that it isn't necessary for the phone to function properly. If it's only there to hold it in place I can find a way around it
Oh boy that charging port is a no go for me. You see, if you only use it to charge your phone and sync data chances are that your phone will be on your desk safe from accidents. But in the Z this port is also for headphones, and you plug your headphones and put the phone in your pocket, and you walk, bike, sport with it... I've had a couple of bend headphones connectors, and most of them still works, and more important the headphone port on the phone never stopped working. A usb c connector is much less resistant than the headphone port.
+Md. Omar Faruque And although I own 2 wireless headphones (as well as in ear as on ear), I find myself using normal headphones quite a lot, for example they're always ready in my backpack so I don't forget to charge them or forget them at the charger
+Caleb Kan If someone is going to "walk, bike, or sport" with it, I don't imagine they'd be too critical of sound quality. Most people get by with wired earbuds.
The solder joints for the power connector aren't that small, you could use a regular iron to replace it, also most of those little chips are most likely caps, usually resistors are marked and caps are blank... It can definitely be hard to tell tho, to be honest I cant really tell from the video all that well..
I'm studying this video religiously right now. I may have to do this. I took my phone to get the screen repaired [twice...] and the second time, after I got it back, the battery started failing randomly. Like, I'll charge my phone, it'll say 100%, but dies if it doesn't stay plugged in. I even have an Offgrid Power Pack for the Moto Z, and at first it helped, but now, even when the power pack AND phone is charged 100%, it just dies. It HAS to be plugged in to stay on. I don't know how to tell if there's a software connection issue with the battery, of it's the battery itself. If any knowledgable person out there has any tips for me, I am forever grateful to you.
-You're supposed to open the screen to the side like a book. It swings open using the right side as a hinge. Both the screen and fingerprint scanner flex cables are designed to do this.- Nevermind, seems like the US version (mine) is different.
There was something about your channel that the first video I watched of your teardown of the Oneplus 2, I clicked on Subscribe and the jokes you crack like if you get into any trouble, you don't know me and you out of all saying I can comb my hair because the back of the phone is so shiny was just perfect.
Maybe start doing some durability tests on older phones too? just for comparison? just an idea! like note 1 vs 7 or something interesting like that ! LG V 20 next btw !
Here ya go. Screen would scratch at level 3 (since it has the plastic shatterproof screen), Burn would turn pixels black but recover, and would easily survive the bend with no damage.
Hi, many thanks for posting this video! Do you know where replacement parts can be purchased? I could only find the screen assembly for sale, but i'd actually like to replace the rear glass lens cover, cause it's all scratched up! Thank you! =)
You can remove the motherboard aswell, you just need to remove 1 screw and use the heatgun to melt the adesive behind it, there is something special underneath the motherboard, like a special transistor that the company doesn't want you to see :)
Sadly he had burnt the LCD in the centre when using the heat gun. We recommend a heat plate to disperse heat across the whole screen at the same time, making it much safer. Also to remove the Motherboard, heat needs to be applied across the back of the device evenly to loosen up the adhesive. Jerry it 100% right here when stating the general consumer will not need to remove the MB, however repair centers will do so to replace the charge port or sim reader ^^

My moto Z startng having a weird shadow whenever you take a picture, and they told me the lens itself could not be repaired, If you know where could I find one, that'd be awesome.
I saw you were able to pull out the earpiece. I'm in need of a new one. see I'm an audiophile, and my speaker has blown, where most people would not be able to hear the distortion it's clear as day for me and sounds awful.

Many sports persons are using wireless headphones now
Yes it is so unfortunate they chose to solder the port to the mainboard. You have to replace the entire thing when that port gets worn (and it will).
Wireless headphones use lossy compression compared to an AUX using a good DAC. So if you're really going for sound quality, wired will be better
+Md. Omar Faruque And although I own 2 wireless headphones (as well as in ear as on ear), I find myself using normal headphones quite a lot, for example they're always ready in my backpack so I don't forget to charge them or forget them at the charger

I saw you were able to pull out the earpiece. I'm in need of a new one. see I'm an audiophile, and my speaker has blown, where most people would not be able to hear the distortion it's clear as day for me and sounds awful.
Dude, you are awesome... nice job...
Replacement displays don't appear to come with new adhesive now and it's hard to find a good adhesive anywhere.
