    It's Lois here today, join me for a really simple spontaneous semi-abstract landscape that was so much fun to paint! Using the wet in wet method and just 2 colours - paynes grey and raw sienna - you can paint some really wonderful landscapes by just letting the paint and water flow together and seeing what happens. The trick is to look for any opportunities to turn particular marks into landscape features, and learn to exploit those opportunities to the full. This can take a bit of practice, but it is a wonderful way to loosen up, take the pressure off yourself and have fun! It's a great way to find new effects and to get rid of any tension as a warm-up exercise before a more planned painting.
    Materials: Cotman Paynes Grey and Raw Sienna, Saunders Waterford 140lb/300gsm cold pressed watercolour paper, 11" by 15"/28cms x 38cms. It is taped to my board and my bord is at an angle of about 45 degrees, or flat, or I can tip and tilt it to get the water to flow. I use ordinary fine table salt for effects and a water mister spray. I use various brushes as shown in the demo, but use any similar ones you have.

You are a great teacher and I love your flavours in your own style of loose abstract! I have been missing you on U-tube for quite awhile…so now I found you tonight through Google… You are a truly gifted artist!

    It's absolutely beautiful! But I have a question. You often say that your exercises here on the channel are great for warming up for a more planned painting. For me, it's often the planned paintings that don't go nearly as well. Do you ever just go with the unplanned and spontaneous much more than those you are trying make look a certain way? In other words, is it OK if your spontaneous paintings are just always better than the planned ones?

    • @LoisDavidsonArt
      @LoisDavidsonArt  Год назад +8

      This often happens because we put too much pressure on ourselves if we plan a painting, but relax when we have fun in unplanned works like this! However, the trick is the mindset, to convince yourself to relax and have fun in the same way when it is planned, then the results should be fresher if you are more relaxed, and go with the flow of paint and water

    I love your paintings and have gained confidence in trying many of them. Hope you won’t mind if I say you could never see a full moon near a sunset. The full moon would only just be rising in the east when the sun sets in the west. 🤔But it could be a surreal dreamscape picture.

    Lois buenos días Lois. Soy Ricardo, nací y vivo en España. Quiero que sepas que tus acuarelas son una fuente de inspiración para mí. No hablo tu idioma ni lo entiendo, pero verte ejecutar tus cielos me hace practicar en casa. Todavía tengo mucho trabajo en este sentido para llegar a algo aceptable. Pero soy persistente.

    so love this i had to try. of course mine didnot turn out as wonderful, but im learning! biggest question, please- adding salt…my salt never works its way through, and ive resorted to rewetting the laler ( withnthe salt on!) still no great shakes- what could i be doing wrong? ty for advice!

    • @LoisDavidsonArt
      @LoisDavidsonArt  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much, it takes a while to get the salt right, if the painting is too wet the salt won't work it will just dissolve, if it is too dry it won't have any effect. the painting should be only damp, nearly dry then the salt should work well given time to dry naturally
