@@reginaldforthright805that’s perfectly fine, but as much of a moving experience as this story is, you can find horror within. The horror you seek is what humans do to each other and what sometimes happens to someone truly innocent. To say this masterpiece is boring has me thrown.
That intro was stunning Mike. I've never seen or read the Green Mile and frankly didn't really have any interest in reading a prison drama, but after that intro this is now on my TBR list. Thanks, Mike 😄
My serialised first edition copies of this book were delayed for just under 2 weeks, due to the UK’s mail job strikes perhaps, and they arrived literally yesterday- what a lovely coincidence that you posted this video- love your King content, keep up the great work :)
There are references to the multiverse between the Green Mile and Revival. “You betchum bobcat” is a direct quote from both, not to mention all of the electrical references between the two.
It is truly something special. I also read it while it was being released in its serialized format. I just kept waiting for that "King" horror to come through. And by the time that last volume came out, you realized, this is different. This is special. So, so good. I only have it on those serials. Never got the full bindup.
This book moved me in so many ways, steamboat willy or Mr Jangles was so captivating and mysterious with his little oil drop eyes. I believe John Coffy was God in the flesh his initials are J.C just like Jesus Christ and man's judgement to crucify him even though he was performing miracles. In my opinion, the Green Mile is one of my favourite books.
I think that the parallel is there but if you mean it as a literal in-universe reality, I'd have to disagree. The only reason Coffey was ever convicted in the first place was because he failed to heal the girls. God doesn't fail and even if in King's multiverse he could, he wouldn't fail simple resurrection.
The Green Mile is also in my top ten King books. And besides The Stand and Misery, is the one I've reread the most. Great review of a great book, Mike!
This really was a damn good book! I tried reading the installments back when they were being released, but I think I was a little too young to really get the effect. But a couple years ago, I read it again, and *wow* it had an impact.
I finished this book while on a bus, trying to hold back the tears because of course I didn't want to cry on the public transport 😪 . But yeah, I hadn't much hope about this book before reading it, in fact was one of the last books in my King colection I picked up to read, but boy it did climb to the top ten/five in a blink
Great review! Green Mile is tied with 11/22/63 for my favorite King books. For how short this book is it was amazing how it emotionally and horrified me. The villain oh I hated that character.
I was working in America as a student when this was coming out, and I picked it up in the serial form that summer. All these years on, still remains my favourite King book of all time.
I second that, and without spoiling will say that there’s a beautiful, heartbreaking epilogue that makes the story more profound than what the film shows.
Im on my 7th Stephen King book and Ive read two very popular SK books being The Stand and The Shining. The Green Mile so far is my favorite. And of all of them I read, this one was the only one I found terrifying because of the idea of being sentenced to death and inserting myself into John's shoes, knowing he was not alone innocent but this hero that only wished to save people. And the fact of the matter is that society DOES do this, they do sentence not only innocent people to death but people who are the best humanity has to offer. And just the thought of society still hating you just because of their false assumptions is terrifying.
This was my first Stephen King I ever read, I fell in love and was hooked! I just re read it going through my great read of SK in publication order. Thank you Mike for these reviews!
My theory on Coffey is that he somehow came across Mother Abigail from the Stand long ago, had to use his powers on her, and that's why she's so damn old during the events of The Stand
Greatly put, this book is a masterpiece. Thank you for all the praise. I still can’t believe how the loser’s club podcast gave this 3 1/2 stars. They must be stoned.
Love this book, only read it this year, saw the movie years ago. Pretty much a perfect story, pacing is great and it’s gotta be the most emotional book of his I have read
Really like the review and your channels. Hey, I caught a multiverse connection I think. When John Coffey is captured, there is a reference to a train whistle or a train passing by. The reference reminded me of the train in the Dark Tower series. (It’s been a while-I believe the book is The Wastelands?) it got me thinking that John was a gunslinger lost in the multiverse.
I remember when the paperbacks were being issued every month and I wished then that I would have been getting them. Needless to say, I now own the collection. Keep up the great work Mike. Your easily my one and only Booktuber now.
The only thing that really freaked me out in the book was when Del got fried. The reminder that such evil exists in normal people was gut wrenching and, when I read that scene the first time, I had to stop reading and digest it.
I listened to this book at the end of last year on audible ( narrator is great ) and had to turn it off a couple of times there towards the end as it is very hard to inspect microelectronics when you're also crying your eyes out. I was kicking myself for waiting so long to read this one or listen to it. It's probably in my top 5 King books.
I thought finding the serial novels was going to be hard, but my wife found all of them but book 2 at a Goodwill, then we found book 2 at Half-Price Books-the brick-and-mortar store. Commenters note: I bought these books in 1996 as the came out in a monthly serial series.
@mikesbookreviews I wasn't really into Stephen King, but The Green Mile was what drew me in. I'm writing in inspiration of Edgar Allan Poe titled "Ichon Hollow", and it's basically The Black Cat in the cat's perspective.
This is a book I've not read, nor a movie I've watched. But based off this review I think I'm going to give it a shot. My King education is very limited, so I'm excited to hear about another book that sounds like something I'd like! Thanks for the review!
this was my first stephen king book and it broke my damn heart. i think everyone should read this book at some point in their life. extremely extremely effective book, 10/10.
Wonderful review! I watched the film adaptation years ago, and thought it was quite good. Very sad and difficult to watch at times, though. I hope to read the book and re-visit the film sometime. Thanks for sharing!
@@nightmarishcompositions4536 I agree, Misery is quite gruesome😂I would definitely recommend Apt pupil, it is truly King at his darkest and most disturbing.
There was one moment in the book, when Paul releases John to get him to Al's wife, where John said that he can see in the sky Old Mother in her wheelchair which is heavily mentioned throughout the Dark Tower series. You're welcome.
I still have the 6 books from when it came out and I will never get rid of them. I remember waiting for the last one to come out and it was delayed... I wish I could remember why, but I have always had 2 copies of the 6th book.
I'd seen the movie several times but had never read it until sometime during the past two years. It easily places in my Top Ten all-time favorites by SK.
I really wish they would film the real ending. I won’t go into it due to spoilers, but the way its details are written could totally be done. And they could still do it IMO I believe two things can be true at once, that the magical negro trope is a problem but that also as a story and novel I love this book.
It's been second on my list for a long time. No 1 is 11/22/63 (I'm one of those different fans). Funny thing, it's his highest rated book on Goodreads at 4.46
Hi Mike, I have a question. On your old videos you have a book on the top shelf behind you. It's black and white with a sword on it. It's bugging me because I can't think what it is! PLEASE TELL MEEEE lol
I read all of the 'issues' of The Green I when they came out and loved, loved, loved them! It was different than previous novels, but awesome! Also, I adored the movie! My heart broke and healed throughout the novel(s)! I absolutely HATE Percy, as I've know some Percys!
The Body is a good story. Stand By Me is a good movie. I have read and watched both multiple times! As a matter of fact, i watched Stand By Me last night, 4/11/24.
I am the opposite of you I still have my serialized versions and over the years have received copies of the full paperback that I have donated to others. I would keep a hardcover if ever received one. The first time I ever saw a uncaged mouse in the house I actually jumped on top of a chair and started screaming. I thought that was what you do because of cartoons. Even in the so more innocent as compared to today, 70's, parents need to pay more attention to the content kids are watching.
This is one book I think universally that everyone will like if not love, yet gets the least amount of recognition.
Right. Everyone loves it yet it never comes up when talking his best books.
Great point.
Right! It really needs to be mentioned more. People just tend to focus on his horror works.
Sorry but I only like horror. This was just boring

Every time that background music kicks in with what I assume is a violin, just kills it. Makes the intro just a straight banger.
Percy Wetmore is the Dolores Umbridge of that book.

Percy was the WORST
