    I feel like John Coffey in this movie was an Angel performing miracles for God, but John himself was a miracle that had to take all of the pain and sin of everyone else just like Jesus did for us. And he was punished for doing nothing more than being a sinless creature of God himself, to save everyone else.

    There are definitely correlations between this story and the Bible. When John Coffey says he is tired of feeling all of the pain he feels in the world, he describes it as "like peices of glass in my head", much like a crown of thorns.

    My son reminds me all the time that one of the best lessons he's gotten from me that stuck with him, and one that he still incorporates today, is that the people/"friends" he associate with, will make a huge inpact in his life - so he needs to choose wisely. The same son, when he was around 10 years old, was standing with me at a bus stop, and saw a man across the street, yelling angry words to no one (and everyone). We both watched him for a little bit. Then, looked up at me and said "I think he needs a hug." I never forgot it, and it was then that I realized that he understood the world better than even I did, at the time. You remind me of him. Blessings to you.

    Wow, I never realized what an obvious Christ reference his name was. I really do think King is one of America's greatest writers. He has many positive references to Scripture, and always embraced equality. I've never found anything objectionable in his tales.

    Amen! The novel made it a little bit clearer what the parallel was, but I feel like it works so well because it's only being used to show the theme you talk about. Coffey was there to die, but he showed people love to help what he could. Without the parallel it's still the same theme. This just adds a nod to something able to teach even more.

    Been waiting for this. Thank you. I do have one question. "What did you make of his punishment of outliving everyone"????? he was 108 & I always tell people who watched the movie I think he will die when he's 120 because king clearly used the bible as a reference to tell this story

    • @MOSchops-xu2ei
      @MOSchops-xu2ei 3 года назад

      Although this is a Cristian perspective on the story, the number 108 is interesting as it is an sacred number in other religions: such as Hinduism in which there are 108 followers of Krishna (which is also represented as 108 beads in a mala), and in Buddhism in which there are 108 earthly desires. I wonder if Stephen King wrote it with this in mind?

    • @RideoutReviews
      @RideoutReviews  3 года назад +5

      Thats a tough one. I don't think it's a punishment because life is always good; however, I do feel it as somewhat of a burden because he does see the effects on death from everyone around him. But the beauty is that he has the possibility to encourage and help more people because of the gift of life. I don't know how long he would live though. If a mouse lived that long I can only image a human!

    Thank you for the video! Videos trying to explain the meaning of the story, not just retell it are rare, appreciate it. And a good catch on JC initials parallel with Jesus. However some details in the movie confuse and concern me, I would like to run them by you:
    1. John Coffey motivates his acceptance of death by being tired of all the evil in the world, and by "killing with love". He basically gives his struggle up. I think Jesus was very different in that he chooses to sacrifice his life to redeem the humanity.
    2. John Coffey takes revenge on both Percy and Wild Bill. Wild Bill who was soon to be executed anyway. Revenge does not seem too aligned with Christian values, is it?
    3. John Coffey is a "gentle giant", he acts basically like a child, he is completely harmless and possses the power t oheal and save people. Jesus was not harmless not childish. Another inconsistency
    I have a feeling this movie may be a misundenstanding of the story of Jesus Christ. I have yet to read the book, thogh.
    Appreciate your thoughts on this!

    Also Tom Hanks' character is named Paul- Christ's greatest evangelist. There were 3 men executed- one repentant, one not, and John. He pulled the cancer ( demons ) out and placed it into a pig ( dirty cop. )

  • @emmigration
    @emmigration Год назад

    Percy, obviously a representation of evil, or even the devil himself. John decided on his and Billy's punishment, much like the judgment of God.
    John was most definitely a prophet of Christ. Notice how he is always surrounded by light when healing people? Also how he is able to forsee and feel the unknown... He told them to be careful when Wild Bill first came in, he knew they were going to take him to see the warden's wife before it was mentioned, and unfortunately, he could feel that everyone in the execution room hated him.
    It's no coincidence that "I'm in heaven" was the song towards which he gravitated, even singing it before his execution. There's also that amazing shot of the projector beaming rays of light behind John. He looked like an angel with brightness radiating from all around him.
    This may be far fetched, but I also think Mr. Jingles may have represented innocence. Regardless of what those on the mile may or may not have done, he was a reassurance of an almost childlike nature, and helped us to see that while bad choices may have been made, we all maintain some remnants of innocence. He provided comfort and peace to almost everyone on the mile, especially to Del during this final days.
    Beautiful film that has so many depths and subjective symbolism. ❤

    Do you think a Christian could read the book? When King was writing this, was he mocking Christianity???

    • @RideoutReviews
      @RideoutReviews  3 года назад

      yeah, I think a christian can read it, but it's good for the christian to know why he's writing it. It gives insight to what he talks about. I'm sure however he is thinking about Christianity others are doing the same and its good to understand why people think a certain way. It's like walking a mile in a persons shoes.

    Technically Stephen King is not a Christian. His parents were Methodist and then when Stephen grew up he rejected the religion entirely. It would not be true to say he was an atheist....because he states he believes in "a" god.....just not the Christian one.
    He would not be the first one to have written a work with unorthodox christ metaphors as someone who does not believe in a christ. The book which was adapted into a film named "K-PAX" is another one that comes to mind.

    The movie “Green Mile” is a fantastic incredible movie that I enjoyed on Netflix when I watch it by myself with mixed emotions and everybody should watch it some time in their life. In my honest opinion of the movie is that it is a very good way of describing how most human nature is. For example you got two sadistic men in this film you got the second antagonist character named Percy Wetmore who is a sociopathic wolf who enjoys bullying people for his own pleasure. You got the main antagonist character named William Wharton also known as “Wild Bill” who is a psychopathic fox who pretends to be sick then he unleashes his wrath upon innocent people when he is the one who brutally deceived, kidnapped, raped, sexually assaulted, tortured and killed those two innocent sweet little girls. Also in my honest opinion there are four different types of people in this world the fox, the lion, the sheep and the wolf. The fox is the lying pretender one, the lion is the compassionate responsible one, the sheep is the innocent naive one and the wolf is the cruel predator one. The fox is Wild Bill, the lion is John Coffey, the sheep is Paul Edgecomb and the wolf is Percy Wetmore. The truth about human nature is that we are not basically bad and good we are just neutral. We humans all need to stay on the right path and avoid the wrong path of the temptation of evil. This is how I myself see the world you either love and support people by helping them or you simply leave them alone & mind your own business by focusing on your own life by moving forward. As human beings we should all follow the three principles of life compassion, empathy and love to have a more perfect union. Sending my love from all the way from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia thank you very much.

    I love your channel Paul. As a Christian I love when a Christian perspective pops up on your page of a movie. I love how you use your channel to promote Christianity and urge people to seek Jesus on their own and learn what accepting Him as your savior provides without bible thumping, judgement, or ramming your thoughts down the non believers throat. Christianity often gets a bad image from those of who judge when judgement is left up to the Lord. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself.” We need to love our neighbors. Thank you for sharing that love Paul.

    I think about the parents of the girls. If they only knew that they had the real killer in their home, how much grief, what ifs, and self blame they would endure. John gave them closer and saved them from extra grief of blame they would have. Love and respect the perspective you have of this movie. I feel strongly drawn to this movie due to my mother dying of a brain tumor(cancer) having very similar outburst and suffering. Another movie that has a meaningful message is “The Shack” having me reevaluate my own actions of pre judgment and judgement of others. There is always the untold story behind actions of people, good or bad.

    I don’t have a religion - I have a relationship with God. I definitely noticed the parallels in the movie, even the biblical names of major characters. But while John Coffey may have Jesus’s initials, I think he rightfully should be compared to John, cousin of the Lord. Both Johns did miracles, were arrested and condemned to death for false accusations and prepared the Way. Now Paul( the novel’s narrator) in the book, Edgecomb was a skeptic of criminals - he believed that all will go to hell and did not see them as equal like the religious leader that Saul was. Like Saul had a premonition and a change of heart by way of a Devine experience, so did Edgecombe - his UTI healing, Mr. Jingles’s near death experience, Mrs. Moore’s tumor recovery - all these things he was a witness to. True, Edgecombe never did unexplainable things like Paul in Bible did BUT as Paul, Edgecombe was changed and wrote/talked about his feelings and experiences.
