Great reaction! You've got some insight too, bro. You mentioned each part having it's own distinct story. This definition comes from the site www.classical-music.com :
"And that’s really what a musical Rhapsody is, a piece of music of indeterminate length and with no formal structure, comprised of a number of different musical ideas. A Rhapsody is all about dynamics: light and shade, high and low, loud and soft, happy and sad… It’s a story, a journey and usually quite the musical ride." Bingo!
Then you associate the "operatic" part in the middle with Hungary. Now look up Bohemia Central in the Czech Republic. Look just a little south, there's Hungary. Not far off at all.
Well done, there's your Bohemian Rhapsody!
Funny story: Arguably the most famous and genius violin player of the 20th century, Yehudi Menuhin (a middle aged man by then) was asked in an interview about the best opera ever written. Without any hesitation he replied: "I'm not sure about a whole opera but if I could choose a fragment, it would surely be Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen".
The interviewer, a very distinguished "connaisseur" of classical music was so astounded he almost fell from his chair. Menuhin was quite amused. Made us laugh...
(this interview was broadcast on dutch television long ago, I never found it again)
Anyway: Nice reaction, bro. Keep it up, peace. 😊

Awesome reaction! Freddie liked it when people had their own interpretations for his music. But on the face of it, the song is written like a mini opera, with a character that goes on a journey, the songs goes through the 5 stages of grieve. It is a very complex composition with 49 cords, while most songs today have around 4 cords or less. Freddie Mercury was a genius as a composer. In my personal opinion the meaning is in the title. A "Bohemian" is an artist or someone who lives outside the bounds of normal society. A Rhapsody is an epic poem or story about a character. A Rhapsody can also be a free flowing movement in classical music with different sections. So Bohémien Rhapsody is the story of an artist. The idea is that you have kill part of yourself or sell your to become famous. You also have to push your own problems and emotions aside to entertain other people.
Freddie Mercury loved opera, he composed a whole for himself and one of the best opera sopranos of all time Montserrat Caballe, it is a great album. The title track Barcelona was used as the official song of the 1992 Olympic games.

This is an awesome comment, I talk to people about how true this song is to its title, it is a true rhapsody and they look at me weird. I guess many ppl don't know the meaning of the word rhapsody. I always taught the song was about Freddie's journey to become an openly gay artist. He basically had to kill his old self and live the life he wanted while his mom may suffer for his choices. Being gay back then was very difficult for the person and for a family that has "traditional" values.
An amazing fact about this song is that Freddie had it all in his mind. He regurgitated what his mind created, that is how big of a musical genius he was.

Great reaction and analysis Freddie wrote this himself including Brian's guitar parts. It has over a billion hits on you tube. He never revealed what his songs were about. He never came out publicly that he was gay when he alive. So in retrospect many people now think that the person he kills is himself. He broke off his 6 year relationship with his girlfriend Mary, in 1976, whom he had planned to marry ("life had just begun and now I've gone and thrown it all away"). His facing his crime, is coming out as gay, at a time when homosexuality was considered a crime ('got to leave you all to face the truth"). When he says "So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye" , that maybe a reference to what they would do in the Muslim countries if you were/are gay. Freddie was Pharsee and in the song they say "Bismilah" - which is Arab language for "Praise God". This is the first ever music video ever. How it came about was they were supposed to appear on "Top of the Pops" British TV show. They knew that they could not do part of the song live so they sent this video instead. By the way, he left Mary, his former girlfriend most of his fortune in his will -he called her 'love of his life' because he did love her. He left Jim Hutton, his other love, much less , probably because he had HIV at the time of Freddie's death
YOU MUST REACT TO THIS SONG LIVE IN MONTREAL..it is 5 years later and he sings it differently and shows what a magnificent showman he was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think the song has anything to with being gay. At the time Queen as a band had far bigger problems. I am not saying it is you specifically but people sometimes want to connect everything Freddie did to being gay. It was part of him but it is not something he necessary thought about a lot. If Freddie wrote a song about being gay it is Liar. But that is personal opinion. In my opinion the name of the song tells you what it is really about. A "Bohemian" is an artist or someone who lives outside the bounds of normal society. A Rhapsody is an epic poem or story about a character. A Rhapsody can also be a free flowing movement in classical music with different sections. So Bohémien Rhapsody is the story of an artist.
I personally think that if you want to understand the song you have to look at what was happening with Freddie and the band when the song was written. It is a song that he had actually started writing at a very early stage, likely around 1968 or 1969. He finally completed it in 1975. I don't believe that this was a coming out song. I think this song is really about the music industry and the entertainment industry. From 1970 until 1975 ,Queen was always in one massive struggle with their managers or with just getting a record deal in the first place. Freddie's parents paid for him to go and study graphic design, he completed his degree. They wanted him to start doing serious work in that direct. But Freddie wanted to be a musician, his parents did not really support that decision. He quickly left home, and he lived practically in a hippy commune.
He really struggled at times, he could have went home at any point, but then he would have to leave his idea of being a musician behind him. As long as he pursued music, he wasn't allowed at home.
It was difficult to get by, and he was becoming older and older. He joined two different bands between 1969 and 1970. Queen was formed in 1970, they only found John Deacon in 1971, Freddie was already 25 at this point. It was very difficult for them to get a recording deal, they took their demo tapes everywhere and it was always rejected or simply ignored. The only deal they could sign was with a production company, that would sell their album to a recoding company. Their first album was only released in 1973, it took their management some time to find the right deal. The management company wanted the record label to sing 4 of acts they were managing simultaneously, it took a long time for them to negotiate a deal. Queen's first album was released when Freddie was already 27, Freddie's parents were really pushing him to drop the whole music idea.
This was a problem with the other band members as well, they were all well educated so they could find other jobs, if they had wanted to. Brian May's father was also very disappointed that Brian was not perusing his academic career further. Their first album was not that successful, they only started to gain recognition when they started touring with Mott The Hoople. Their first successful single was on their second album, and they finally had an international hit with their 3rd album. Queen's first big hit only came when Freddie was already 28, that is really on the older side for a new a pop or rockstar. But they were still flat broke, if their 4th album, A Night At The Opera, was not a success the band would have had to break up, they were heavily in debt. Their management were taking most of their money, and they had almost nothing. Freddie hated the situation, he hated it so much that he wrote two other songs about it. They did get a new manager, and they removed themselves from their previous contract just before they started recording this album, it was not easily. They were still so much in debt despite leaving their pervious mangers behind. This is somewhat of a very basic outline about what was happening at the time, in order to perhaps explain the song a bit better.
I think Freddie's other song against their management, Flick Of The Wrist, somewhat helps to explain Bohemian Rhapsody. Part of the idea is that in order to survive in the music and entertainment business you have to kill a part of yourself. Flick Of The Wrist discusses this same concept: "Prostitute yourself," he says. "Castrate your human pride, sacrifice your leisure days, let me squeeze you till you've dried".
This was a very uncertain time for them when this album was recorded, this might have been their last album they recorded together, after just achieving a small amount of success. The opening acapella is just an existential crisis, and someone contemplating life. The verses in Bohemian Rhapsody does invoke the feeling that something might be coming to an end. It is someone that has tried something and he might not succeed, as their final judgement basically lay in the hands of the buying public at this point.
It is someone who has to face up to reality, or take responsibility for the choices they have made.
"Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?" Scaramouche is a clown, and the Fandango is a dance. He is basically saying or commanding, "dance for me clown". A performer has to entertain others no matter what their own feeling are. This is a theme Freddie seemed to have given some thought to over the years. He loved the song The Great Pretender and he later did a cover version of the song, it also has similar lyrics, "just laughing and gay like a clown". Freddie also liked the opera 'Pagliacci', which can be translated to "Clowns". It is the story of a clown that finds out his wife is cheating on him, but he still has to put on his costume, and he still has to perform and he still has to make other people laugh, while he is having a mental breakdown about the betrayal of his wife. Freddie incorporated a small part of the aria Vesti La Guibba, which comes from this opera, into another song he wrote, It's A Hard Life. This whole sentiment of what it really mean to be an entertainer resonated a lot with Freddie. He saw himself as the great pretender or someone that is often putting on a show for the entertainment of other people.
The rest of the opera section can perhaps be seen as having to sell your soul to the devil in order to become famous. There is the famous myth that if a blues player wanted to become a virtuoso, he would have to meet the devil at the crossroads. There is a fight for your soul, in order to be a successful entertainer. But in this case the devil is likely just their manger, that was taking most of their money. In Flick Of The Wrist, Freddie equates their manager or their manager's greed to the devil; "Synchronize your minds and see, the beast within him rise."
"So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye? So you think you can love me and leave me to die? Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby, just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here."
These lines makes so much more sense if you are saying it to your manager. In the song Flick Of The Wrist Freddie also uses terms of endearment such as 'baby' and 'honey', he might be equating a contract or the signing of a contract to a marriage: "And then a kick in the head. He's taken an arm and taken a leg, all this time honey, baby you've been had." Freddie's other song against the manger, Death On Two Legs, also has somewhat of a similar concept, it is just more blunt: "Have you found a new toy to replace me? Can you face me? But now you can kiss my ass goodbye."
The final section is just acceptance of the situation, it was out of their hands, in the lap of the gods, they needed the album - A Night At The Opera, to be a massive success, and lucky for them it was. If there is a song where Freddie reflects on his sexuality I would say that song is Liar.
      Liar was originally named Lovers.
Freddie and Jim's relationship wasn't as rosy as many people like to pretend.

It can be both. It can also be the process of coming out.
      The options are .
      Suicide.
      Live a lie.
      Live your truth.
Once you decide to live - you have to decide
do it as society says your suppose to live 1 man marry 1 woman (lie)
or live your truth and now you can marry a same sex partner (truth)
Then you have to come to terms with how society is going to treat you and can you live without your current life/family/friends.
Coming out is deciding that living a lie is more painful than living your truth and you may have to build a new family/friends.
IN the end Nothing Really Matters we'll all die soon enough.

The flagship song of Queen. An amazing composition by Freddie and outstanding instrumentation and vocals by each of the other members of the band. I love this song and I have been listening to it since it first came out. Everyone was on fire about this song when it dropped and we all still know all the lyrics and instrumentation to memory. Freddie said that the listener should decide what the song means and there are a lot of people voicing their opinions of what it is. All four of the members of Queen were absolute perfectionists so when you listen to any of them, you will be awe stricken by their talent. All wrote number 1 songs and all have college degrees with Brian May having a PhD in Astrophysics, Roger a degree in Biology, John an advanced degree in electronics and Freddie with a degree in Design. Freddie designed the Queen logo that appears on everything that is officially Queen, still today.

Or Live Aid in London, 1985 (I think). They had been out of the spotlight for a while and weren’t as popular. Freddie was so nervous, but he walked out onto that stage and began a series of call and responses with the audience, they echoed him from the first one. He had them in the palm of his hand within those first three notes.

Listening to Bohemian Rhapsody is like being on a musical roller coaster. An amazing fact about Queens' lead guitarist Brian May. He was actually working on getting his Ph.D in astrophysics when Queen was formed. Music meant so much to him so he put his doctorate on the back burner. After Freddie Mercury died, Queen disbanded. Even while still part of the group Brian and his father designed and built a new kind of guitar. Brian's IQ has been measured in the 160's. That's even beyond Big Bang Theory smart. So he was a real genius on top of being a musical genius. after Queen disbanded, Brian went back to working toward his doctorate. He finally got it in 2006 or 7. He's now Dr. Brian May Ph.D. He's also written about 6 books on the subject of astrophysics.

So we listened to whatever got played on the radio ... patiently waiting for the good stuff (whatever we happened to like) AND it was highly unlikely you had your own radio or record player until your teens... so we had to listen to all the stuff our parents and grandparents liked.... to this day I know songs from both world wars along with almost every Broadway musical / Hollywood film musicals!!

The way I've always interpreted B.R. is the way i feel it must have been for Freddie to come out. I've viewed his killing a man, as him killing the old him & everyone else's perception of him & his lifestyle. The repeated mentions of the hate and tormenting as the backlash of his sexuality. There is even mention of there being a devil put aside for him. His family is very religious, from my understanding, so his homosexuality must have been an even harder acceptance. This song is just phenomenal and can be interpreted many ways. That's the beauty of music and more so with Queen because they don't want the listeners to listen to it 'their' way but to feel it in their own way. I'm happy you love them. They're one of my favorite bands and Freddie is one of my favorite people.

Rhapsody means a song in several movements ie sections. Bohemian rhapsody is choral ballad, operetta, heavy metal, coda. If you're reacting to music you need headphones so you can hear all the subtleties. In this video you're missing transitions. Remember this video was done in 1975. No autotune, no computers just pure talent. Most people will agree that when Freddie sings Put a gun to his head pulled my trigger now he's dead refers to Freddie killing off his old self to become his new self. That is to say coming to terms with his sexuality. He is apologizing to his mom for being gay Although you will hear it said that he was Bisexual. The operaetta is Him being Limbo waiting for them to decide will he go to heaven or will he go to hell. Look up the term bismillach And you will be surprised and it is another nod to his mother. The record label not only fought them because it was a 6 minute song and they didn't think Any radio station would play a 6 minute song much less people listen to a 6 minute song (how wrong they were). Fortunately they stuck to their guns and this masterpiece Was released. They also did not want to release the song because of the meaning of bismillach. The last part where he says It really doesn't matter is Freddie referring to it doesn't matter which way he goes Up or down. Brian may is actually doctor Brian may an Astro physicist. I have it written down in my phone what he did his dissertation on but I'm too lazy to get out of bed. In the end even queen says they don't know what the song is about. In thethe end this Freddie's dong And very personal to him. It was 6 years in the making as I understand it. The rest of the members had no idea what freddie was going for but Freddie knew in his mind what he wanted. This is the greatest rock song written by the greatest singer songwriter showman then and now. Freddie was leaps and bounds ahead of his time in 1975 And if he were still alive today he would be leaps and bounds ahead of the pack. Nobody has ever attempted to right a piece of music like bohemian rhapsody. They would basically just be laugh at. If you haven't reacted to somebody to love 1981 live at Montreal or live aid 1985 Those are a must. The live aid performance is considered the best 20 minute Of live music ever.

    1. If you want to know the true strength of the lead singer (Freedie Mercury) Google "The note heard round the world"...
    2. Bohemian Rhapsody is a song about Freddie Mercury, it is about him leaving behind his innocence and becoming not only a superstar, but also gay. The line "I killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he's dead" is all about him coming out to his mother and telling her he's gay, and that her innocent boy is gone. the rest of the song is mostly about how he was treated not only by his FORMER friends, and his father, but the fact that his carrier was never a "roller coaster, it was a rocket ship, that never came down... Even to this day, almost 50 years later, people still love Queen, even people hearing them for the first time...
