  • Update Viltrox have v1.4 firmware on their website (underneath the old version look for line 2 EF-EOS M2 1.4): www.viltrox.com...
    I bought the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 Speedbooster (with my own money as always, I never accept free stuff to review) so I can use my Canon M5 as a 'full frame lite' with EF lenses. First impressions are good, other than I noticed the nifty fifty Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens no longer autoparks focus when camera is switched off !
    I emailed Viltrox last night to ask about this, and they replied immediately with 1.4 firmware which fixes this, so wanted to quickly show how easy it is to update firmware and this fixes the focus autopark issue with Canon 50mm lens.
    I did ask about the battery drain issue when camera is off, and they think firmware may help with that also. My M5 body doesn't drain battery with any of my lenses (EF28/50/85/24-105F4L) so this doesn't effect me thankfully.
    Please comment below with any questions or feedback, I will do my best to answer as always.
    Thanks for watching my video.

    For everyone struggling with this, USB cables can be charge only, or charge and sync. If you use a charge only cable the computer will never recognise the adapter. I guess this is the reason why so many people struggle with this. You can also use an OTG cable plus male to male USB.
    Thanks for this video btw! Straight to the point!

    Battery Drain Info: A few people have mentioned battery drains when camera is switched off but speedbooster and lens is still in place. I've tested this with my M5 body and EF50mm/1.8 for 24 hours and battery still shows full/3bars, so this looks to be only certain body/lens combinations I think, so far Dee P reported M50 body with EF24-85mmUSM drains battery in 7 hours, so if people can comment with which body/lens they are having battery drain issue and how quickly it drains we can hopefully share knowledge to understand this better.
    Update: I've tested my M5 with speedbooster with EF 50/1.8 for 24hrs, EF 28/1.8 for 12 hrs, 24-105 F4L for 12hrs and EF 85/1.8 for 12 hrs and battery is still showing full/3bars after all these tests, so either the v1.4 firmware update fixed the battery drain issue (which I think is really unlikely), or the battery drain issue doesn't effect M5 body with these lenses. Would be good if someone else has the 24-85mm USM lens to test on M5/M6 as that would suggest its an M50 specific issue, and if someone can test M50 with EF 50/28/85 or 24-105 F4L would comfirm if this is specific to 24-85USM lens.
    UPDATE: The serial number is handwritten on Viltrox box, mine is 1203xxx and apparently this battery drain issue is fixed in 1205xxx and above, BUT I still cannot see any battery drain issues with my M5 body/EF lenses, so I wonder if this still only affects certain lens/body combinations and mine are OK ????

      Thanks, I used the speedbooster with 24-105mm F4L at weekend and am really pleased with results. Although personally I find the lower aperture figure and focal length in exif a bit annoying (and dubious!). I'd rather it just showed the original figures - although it is useful for test comparison pics I can easily tell which are with the speedbooster and which with a dumb adapter.

    Here's a good question: I have Canon M50, and I've just bought this speedbooster, and connected it to my nifty-fifty lens, so, before updating, the autofocus ring actually retracts back inside the lens when switching the camera off, meaning, I don't have the problem that everyone is talking about!
    Now, here's my question: How the heck can I check the current firmware version of the speebooster?! I mean I don't want to update it if the update isn't necessary. Also, when checking the firmware version via the camera settings menu, that only shows the camera and the LENS version, not the adapter's.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  4 года назад +1

      There is no way to check current firmware, but updating is quick and easy so shouldn't be a problem. Having said that if your lens retracts I believe you have latest firmware, so I wouldn't worry about it, last firmware update was in 2018 so if you bought speedbooster recently it should already have latest version on. The two issues I'm aware of which firmware updates fixed were lens sticking on wide open aperture and not retracting when switched off, so if you don't see either issue then you should be golden.

      I've not noticed this, I always get F1.2 on the F1.8 lenses and F2.8 on the F4, I'd suspect this is a connection issue, is there any play in the adapter to lens or body ? Do canon camera's internal lens corrections work with genuine canon EF lenses?
    I have the VILTROX EF-EOS M2 Speed Booster. The internal lens corrections do not work with this. It is possible to activate them in the menu (!!!) on the Canon Eos M50. But if you check the functions in RAW recording, all remain disabled.

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  2 года назад

      I've not tried this, but not surprised the Canon lens correction won't work with Viltrox speed booster, as it won't match the lens profile Canon produce for each lens due to the x0.71 lens, so I think this is something you probably have to accept as a downside to speedbooster and do corrections in post.

I just checked with Viltrox speedbooster and as expected it won't recognise my EF 28mm F1.8 lens just shows mm unrecognised - I'd be surprised if this wasn't the same with all EF lenses as the speedbooster has to 'fake' the lens info so camera respects the fov/aperture and adjusts metering accordingly - with EF 55-200mm does lens abberation correction recognise correct lens model - or something else - its not impossible its a fluke and the Viltrox 'fudging' makes camera think its a different lens and uses those corrections - which I suspect might be hit and miss with results - but I'm just guessing as I have no expert knowledge.

      I don't really know, I never had battery drain issue with M5 and any of my canon EF lenses, others complained with M50 and said firmware updates didn't fix this, so it seems to be lens/body specific. The issue seems to be lens stabilisation or AF staying on when camera is switched off, so not sure how firmware could affect this, as I would assume if camera is powered off the adapter/firmware is not active anyway, I'm not certain but there also seemed a suggestion that Viltrox made a revision to the adapter hardware which may fix this, but as my adapter was fine i never investigated.

      You cannot use Canon EF-S lenses, as they stick out at the rear so foul the lens in speedbooster, but I've heard people using other brands, ie some Sigma EF-S lenses will still fit. Obviously for stills you would have crazy vignetting so would have to crop so only real reason to use this is 4K video on M50 where the sensor crop is 1.8?, so by using a 0.71x speedbooster you could reduce effective crop to around 1.25 (1.8x0.71) - , so this isn't really useful for most people.

I've done it with the EF-S 10-18mm and EF-S 55-250mm - only issue is Viltrox's firmware doesn't really work well with these lenses yet, esp the 10-18mm - they tend to lock up the camera. Hopefully they'll update firmware to address this issue. With older EF-S lenses that have metal mounts like the EF-S 17-55mm you can just use your fingers to pull out the rear plastic part and the Viltrox works perfectly with that lens. Vignetting is bad open gate on the wider lenses, but that's no concern when you shoot crop mode raw video with Magic Lantern on the EOS M, or for those with an M50 - 4k video.

      @@WonderBoggle Thanks for comment, I had heard of people cutting the back of EF-S lenses to fit, my guess is that Canon/Viltrox won't update to support those combinations, as its such a niche of a niche of people happy to literally hack a lens to fit. For me I'd never do this, both as I'd hate to hack the lens and it be unsellable, and as vigentting would be crazy for photo/1080 video. I can see this being useful for specific use though, ie the M50 4k users wanting to widen the crop, so a cut off 10-18 with the 4k crop probably wouldn't show any vignetting and would be a very useful combination, and a really cheap way to shoot 4k with DPAF

      @@jamesb72 Viltrox should be able to support the newer EF-S lenses on their speedboosters as it's the same electronics as their dumb EF-M adapters which work flawlessly with all EF-S lenses. EF-S lenses cover a slightly wider area than APS-C sensor size, you could get away shooting with a 1.3x or so crop even with the 10-18mm and have no vignetting. M50 4k video is 1.82x crop with speedbooster (2.56x without) so no vignetting there. Also many people now use magic lantern on the original EOS M - those cameras shoot 2.5k 14-bit raw video cropped with SD card overclock hack, or 4k raw video cropped with horizontal-only line skipping. With both these modes EF-S lenses + the speedbooster are a perfect combination. Sawing the lens does take some patience and there's the risk of damaging it, that's true.
