  • How does doom eternal make you a better player? Im not just referring to doom eternal helping improve reaction time, multitasking, aim, movement, or resource management but beyond that. With any game there’s plenty for the game to teach you provided youre willing to learn. Doom eternal is the exact same way but for me, with over a year of playing my appreciation for it continues to go deeper and deeper.

      I took absolutely nothing.
Eternal is very different from other shooters, and while the average modern shooter has very constraint movement and you need to constantly hide behind cover, doom eternal gives you much more freedom in having fun movement. Also, in doom eternal the enemies are in extremely large numbers and some of them are really big and won’t be the same size as the enemies in other modern shooters, making your aim not as important as e.g. CS:GO, call of duty, battlefield, etc. also, doom eternal allows many chances for you if you mess up in your aim and you can instantly recover from them while in other FPS games it is very easy for you to just die instantly if you mess up your aim a little bit, so that makes aiming a lot more demanding in other FPS games and way lesser in eternal.
Another point to note is that the game has many guns which don’t even require good aim. The rocket launcher has the remote detonation so if you miss you can easily explode it mid-air. The tri rocket burst which basically locks on to an enemy and barely even needs aim. The super shotgun, which has a very long spread and barely needs any accuracy, and combined with its Meathook you can go to enemies really easily and then kill them. The ballista has the arbalast, which gives of an explosion and only needs some accuracy and then gives off an explosion, and the destroyer blade, which is supposed to attack many enemies at once and barely needs any aim at all. The sticky bombs too stick onto enemies, so you don’t even need to point at the fodder to kill them. As for managing resources, I still don’t think you can take anything from eternal. In other games you have much more back-up ammo on your guns, and you don’t refill your magazine by a chainsaw and rather by reloading which doesn’t exist in doom eternal. And to get your spare ammunition back, you need to find a gun dropped by someone that has the same ammo type as yours, and that is a very different and more complex way of getting ammo than doom eternal.
In conclusion, doom eternal doesn’t need the accuracy and precision you would need in other FPS games. And that’s what makes it fun: If you’re bad at other FPS games you can still have a lot of fun in doom eternal because it doesn’t need you to be precise at other game’s mechanics but rather the game’s own fun zone. If you play doom eternal a lot for a month and then return to some modern shooter, there is a high chance you won’t even be as good anymore since you’re very used to constantly moving, not reloading, and not needing good aim when it’s the complete opposite in those games. So, if you’re good at doom eternal you will get better at other classic shooters but not your current modern shooters. If you have read till here, thank you.

Getting to know your tools. I was playing Ratchet & Clank after Doom Eternal and I was trying to learn each weapon; when yo use them, their range, etc. It made the battles more fun than I expected. Before Doom Eternal, I would probably ignore the weapons R&C provided and complain how a lot of them were useless.

Yeah I've noticed after playing this for a good hour on a hard difficulty like ultraviolence or above or you have to you know constantly be moving little room for error and mistake really gets you used to snap aiming and identifying targets with a split second, I don't know if anyone here has played battlefield but the way the bullet mechanics work and bullet drop how it's more realistic and you actually have to take a second to aim to hit your target and bullets can literally wiz past them almost in a realistic way, I have definitely noticed where I don't use aim assist so much unless it's a large map and I need to be able to hit farther targets more easily I'm more about that snap aim mechanic and yeah definitely noticed my game and I get a lot more kills just general awareness and reflexes are way more honed and quicker after playing doom eternal for an hour and that's just against AI but the AI may as well be real people for how relentless it is game is amazing! Without a doubt yep the game is very hard at first but once I got good at it it has a lot more to offer rather than frustration if you let it teach you something and the fun zone yeah once it kicks in it you just feel like a total badass

    Doom eternal has everything.
An example is aiming, you have to quickly snipe weak points and that helps for every game.
Its the same for positioning, you don't want to be sitting in an area where you can't hit demons so you move to a better position to kill them.

Doom Eternal makes you make decisions on the fly when things don't go the way you want/ expect, and the same thing applies once you get past like level 5 in tetris. For me I found eternal to make me appreciate enemy design a lot more (especially how enemies play off each other to create interesting scenarios), acting quickly in tight situation in order to come out on top, good movement, and staying aware of resources you have and how to use them.
Another thing I really appreciate from eternal is that it's starting to pressure me into leaving my habit of scavenging. By that I mean situations where it's good to use a curtain resource but I hold off on it because I'm afraid I will need it in the future. In eternal I have this issue with grenades (especially in something like brawler mode) but eternal keeps showing me that I'm just worrying over nothing as using the grenade isn't too much of a risk and will only benefit me if I do at some situations, and over coming this habit for good will also feed into me learning to resource manage even more. These lessons I listed don't just apply to shooters as you said, but can help me with all sorts of other games and will make me appreciate them more as a result.

  • @Master-of-Puppets

eternal definitely made me better at shooters but more importantly it taught me the importance of just being aggressive and confidant, on my nightmare runs I would be able to just lay back sometimes run away and reassess, maybe die a couple times then retry later. But on UN, I HAD to be more aggressive, if I run I die, simple as that. it pushes you to just be confident in what you can do and just doing it, I noticed the improvement in basically every game I play not just shooters too, I just love this game

Aim 100% coming from a long time titanfall 2 player. Which also helped me a lot. Doom challenged me to be better, smashing UN on PC with a PS5 controller, TAG 1 really built me, playing with the randomizer has excelled it, creating burst high damage combos mixed with weak point targeting, randomizer also pushed your knowledge of resource management much further forcing you to combo with things you normally wouldn't since fodder seems to appear a lot less/not always be in every big fight. It's definitely made me a better gamer overall.

  • @UberNiall

Reaction time definitely but also realising that some weapons are better at dealing with certain enemies than others, and making use of the tools you’re given. Doom eternal pushes you more into its systems than other games simply by the fact that it is balanced so well compared to other games, but if you make a conscious effort to attempt to work with the game design I think you can greatly improve your experience. If the game is designed well enough try to lean into and work with the game’s systems.

So not game related, but I feel like Doom Eternal is good training for being able to juggle and prioritise multiple deadlines/objectives, something that is often mentioned in job application descriptions.
We would probably need some kind of experiment to prove this so I don't want to say it for certain, but I wouldn't be surprised considering that in Eternal's arena fights, planning the order to eliminate demons etc feels similar to managing multiple deadlines in a job (broadly speaking anyway...). Maybe Doom Eternal is a real life trainer as well? 🤔

It combines reaction time, quick time strategy and weapon/inventory management like no other game.
Where I would declare other FPS games to be fun because you have to be quick, DE is asking a lot more from you other than throwing a nade occasionally.
Each enemy has his properties, attacks and ways to combo kill him; combining that with the location/arena and different enemy constellations, you have something WORTHY to MASTER.
Come on, CoD, Counter Strike is just fun if the opponents are somewhat on your skill level and your team doesn't suck.
It doesn't give you any advanced mechanics as DE does. Quick switching, bloodpunch, chainsaw, flame belch, meat hook and combining all of that.
I wish the perks where a little bit more varied as I use always the same.
I really don't know how ID is going to top that. I really don't think you can create another Doom game which could please DE fans - but please, prove me wrong!
Edit: it's the perfect game for a skilled loner haha

Biggest transferable thing: a very tightly tuned OODA loop. Essentially I'm switching targets and priorities on the fly at extremely high speed, abandoning failed plans quickly, and implementing damage control as soon as it's needed.
That's an insight I developed in hindsight, not something I was trying to improve or even knew I was improving. It was only when I watched my own footage of a blind Cultist Base master level deathless run that it clicked. With base game and SGN master level, I memorized a lot of it so it didn't occur to me that I had really tightened up my decision making until I watched my Cultist Base master level run.
That said, beating base game and SGNML on Ultra-Nightmare is really what developed that skill. Playing on just Nightmare helps, but since you aren't penalized as hard for dying, you don't develop as keen sense of priority switching and damage control.

Igrew up with metal and doom and it's whole image and everything that goes with it, is in my blood, and ithink that yes eternal makes you better at any shooter, which if you think about it it's wild. It's so good, it makes you better at a whole genre. Honestly I'm still playing daily but I also didn't aquire it until bout 3 months ago. I'm a 114 level and I feel like I have so so muh more to nail down and get better at. Also the audio of doom games is so awesome, how it helps you know where everything is at. I love the audio
, I remember hearing the sound of the cyberdemon being alerted to me, an it genuialy gave me anxiety. That right there is some sick and simple designe. I love doom man.

It definitely made me a better player, at least in other doom games. I remember my first time playing doom 2016 on hurt me plenty and for me that shit was difficult back then, especially bossfights. After beating eternal on UV I decided to go back to doom 2016 only to cakewalk trough the campaign on nightmare in a single (pretty long) day of playing. Just the act of swapping a few guns in rapid succesion trivialized all those enemies I once had a problem with and that was only one of the many little things that I learned to do while playing eternal. I love how doom eternal pushes players to improve instead of letting them to brute force everything and not learn from mistakes like I did my first time.

DooM has been in my veins since I was 3 in ‘94, watching my dad play until I was old enough. Eternal definitely (especially on higher difficulties obviously) have FOR SURE been teaching me not to stand in one spot too long and be a target 🎯 As well, it’s bettered my aim/manuvours like catching a demon “on the back-swing” when flying past them after using the Meat Hook; especially in BattleMode. When it comes to online play, sure I’ll be a tad frustrated if a demon player isn’t as good (or AFK at the time haha), but I try and quickly type to them on the side chat thing to use skills more often and when-Is rather help them “git gud” than continue to lag behind skill wise 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personally, the thing in doom that really changed my way to play fps is the way i move, when i play a casual shooter (CoD for exemple) i play in a very aggressive way and it feels easier, i have also double my sensitivity in other games.. it made me more confident in gameplay with situation of stress and more able to do multiple things in the same time.. irl the mentality of the game made me more confident
And YOU helped me so much to beat the game on ultra nightmar i was stuck in cultist base now i am with the gladiator !

After playing Doom the amount of melee kills I get in Overwatch has noticibly increased because I´m so used to Glory kills. Also my aim with certain heros has improved, for example I now land shots as Pharah more reliably on other flying heros like Echo or jumping arround Genjis.
Furthermore I´m more conscious about what I have in my arsenal. I previously rarely ever swichted to secondary weapons but now I pull them out on almost every oppertunity I see.
And yes, the sound design in Doom improved my awarness for soundeffects like footsteps, which wasn´t all bad before, if I do say so myself.

25 years of playing games and I have always been geared towards JRPGS, SRPGS, Metroidvanias and a bit of Resident Evil. I recently started playing Borderlands 1 and I really liked it. My wife grew up playing Serious Sam and I downloaded it for her just a week ago. We had such a blast playing it. I just downloaded Doom Eternal 2 days ago and holy f*ck. This game is a 10/10 and that's a title I have only said about five other games in the last 25 years. The best part is rewarding you for strategy and if you die it was your fault.

So ill share my story here and how I got into the FPS Genre. I grew up with a playstation and platformers like crash bandicoot weere really my main games to play I only got into FPS games with friends when they introduced Halo 3 to me. Was such a good time all the split screen madness. When I played doom 2016 it was a breath of fresh air with how aggressive the game wanted you to be and not tactical like Halo or COD or any battle royale game the game sucked me in for a few playthroughs then I proceeded to my usual games. When Eternal came out I was blown away with how well the game played and the mechanics so well integrated to the game. The combat loop was fun and addicting only one problem was I was using a controller the whole time.
Yep, even was I was playing on PC i would still use controllers for FPS games, its just what I got used to because of Halo. When Eternal came out and all these crazy good players showed their way to play (Quick Switching and weapon combos) I wanted to learn how to do that too. Fast forward because of all the communities help I finally play FPS games with mouse and keyboard exclusively and I was able to play doom eternal from Hurt Me PLenty Controller to Nightmare and UN TAG 2 on M&K. So yea, thanks doom for making me more adept to mouse and keyboard controls in FPS Games! :D Now i rotate, Apex legends, Destiny 2 and Doom Eternal as my main FPS Games and Im really having such a good time. :)

I took a my reaction time and quick aim from Doom Eternal, but I also gave that to Doom Eternal from Titanfall 2.
But I'd say Doom Eternal helped me improve that skill more. Plus it helped my decision making more and reaction time. So now I can do good at both Titanfall 2 and Doom Eternal. Which are both similar for their fast pace action and movement.

Admittedly I haven't really played many shooters besides Eternal for the past 6 months, but I don't feel like I've come out of it with much I could apply in other shooters.
I still miss more PB/Ballista shots than I'd like to admit, so clearly my aim ain't worth a shit, but that's also the only thing I could potentially carry over into another FPS.
Everything else I had to learn in Eternal was tied more to its mechanics specifically, so I don't really see that helping me in other games.

For me, much like halo 2 and 3, it has made me want to play more, which has made me better overall at games, but also it has forced me to be better, most games do not make you think about all of that stuff at once, so going into them I already have an advantage.

I haven't even played DOOM Eternal yet but just from the conversations about it i got very hyped. And one very important thing is that a friend of mine told how alive he felt while playing DOOM Eternal. I thought to myself, even some of my favorite games like Witcher 3 or Fallout New Vegas make you braindead (gameplay wise) after a certain point because they get so fricking easy. I understood that i really wanted a challenge, so that motivated me to play Hades, the first Roguelike/Rogulite i've ever played, and playing that made my hunger for challenge even more. Now i'm hyped to games like Dark Souls, Sekiro, Fallout 1 and 2, Darkest Dungeon, Furi etc. because those games offered a real challenge and because life was a challenge i didn't feel like a braindead loser just sitting on his couch with a controller in his hands.
I repeat: i haven't even played DOOM Eternal yet but even with only the conversations about it made me a different person and opened my eyes to a whole new perspective about games and life.

I've never played a game that made me hate myself more. This game is a reminder that I'm a total nothing now at everything I do. Everyone is better than me, and I get killed over and over by people of lesser level constantly. People have used me to boost them, then abandoned me when they have their 200 kills and it's supposed to be my turn. It's a 3.5/10 difficulty but I get slaughtered constantly and never seem to improve. Just today, a guy who was level 237 if you can believe it just killed me in an instant. Like how does a level 237 possibly need any kills? Why is he even still playing? I'm level 25 now and get killed by level 2's. It's like my gun has no effect on them. If I wasn't in so much crippling pain, I would give up gaming entirely out of just not being good enough to play them.

Outside of generally just making me better at games overall I found myself swapping out weapons much more in shooters I was playing. Just a few days ago I started up Halo 3 and while there’s only a two weapon limit I was constantly dropping and picking up guns from fallen enemies and trading them out with marines. So that’s my example. And honestly it made my experience with Halo all the more fun.
