I would actually rank Brutal Doom as #1. Some people think its just a gore mod but it ramps up the flow of combat in a lot of ways. Plus its compatible with most map mods so theres an endless variety of levels to play.
Brutal Doom is awesome, there's some purists out there who rag on it and anyone who plays it (probably due to a dislike of the creator), but it's wrong to gatekeep what people like to play or what Doom is supposed to be. That said, I would have made a separate category for all of the mods/sourceports/etc that fans have created for Doom in the past 30 years. 30 years of fan development can't be matched, and obviously the original Doom 1/2 don't represent the work that has been done on those games over the decades.
I really liked Doom 3's immersive aspect. It's the only game in the franchise where you actually feel like you are on a Mars base that has opened a gateway to hell.
@@ThommyofThenn I do know that there's a D3 mod out there called "Classic Doom 3", which basically re-creates the very first episode ("Knee-Deep in the Dead") of "Ultimate DOOM". and there was a RUclipsr named "Chromescream" who did a bunch of map mods for "Doom 3" about 15-years ago almost. now whether those mods are available, that I honestly don't know.
To me DOOM 2 is pretty much the best in the franchise mostly because of all the mods and wads it received over the years. In the past you said how Half Life 2 mods are "comfort food" for you and that's pretty much how i feel for Doom wads. Still to this day we get new projects that shows how incredibly versatile and creative you can get with the original game's weapons, movements and monsters.
Doom 2 has more mods but the first Doom had better ones (Most of them aren’t really.. a thing now and it’s sad.) Edit: Forgot to talk about my.house.WAD, after playing it I changed my mind.
I jumped into the world of Doom in the summer of 2016. Bought all the Classic Doom games and didn't play anything else in 2 months. That's how addicting old Doom games were. Doom 2 is my personal favorite, but gotta mention that TNT Evilution has underrated soundtrack!

In my opinion Doom 2016 is like this weird place between Doom Eternal and also a tiny bit like Doom 3. Doom Eternal is a bit more bright, colorful and cartoony in a way, Doom 2016 had a more dark atmosphere, and a tad bit slower pace although still fast paced. For me personally, I am not comfortable with Doom 2016, it's just perfect in my opinion!
I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see quite a few positive comments on Doom 3, and no nonsense from the gatekeeping purists about how its not a proper Doom game, that shit drives me crazy
2:44 It's awesome to see you add the RPG versions of Doom here. They were my first contact with the franchise, and were a fun introduction to turn based games for me.
Quake might be too weird to continue. Half of the franchise are mutliplayer-only arena shooters, the others are Strogg-focused single-player games. The first one is Lovecraftian madness. Which direction should they go?
You also forgot to mention that Eternal made a legacy with a lot of clones. Deadlink, Shadow Warrior 3, Turbo Overkill, Vicerafest... A lot of games made this formula of low ammo/quick swap combo with melee finishers their meta after. It would be as influencing as Doom 1-2 were if they added modding to it tbh and opened resources bc it clearly got to the point of another way of Doom Clones but now Eternal-Likes.
I agree, Doom Eternal absolutely catapulted the popularity of "boomer shooters" and fps games where you have to be active in what weapon you are using, and using absolutely all of your tools at your disposal in order to survive. Although I must say, Doom Eternal is so polished that something about it has made it absolutely better than any of the indie game clones it inspired. It is as close to a 10/10 game that I have ever played (aside from custom Doom 2 wads probably)
Brutal Doom 64 It's such a great mod, It adds weapon animations that were cut due to space on the cartridge an update of the sounds and visual so they're not blurry and compressed
And you're entirely correct about the Doom 3 shotgun. Yes it would suck at Doom 2 ranges but this is Doom 3 with the tight hallways and in your face ambushes. Just walk up, fire and laugh as they die while the early 2000s metal riffs chug
You thought D3 wasn’t scary? Try playing it with an Intel Celeron paired with 256mb of ddr1 and an ATI 9200, every time I switched between the flashlight and the shotgun my frames would drop to negative digits meanwhile an IMP was eating my face 😅 2004 was such a good year for gaming, I also remember having to wait like 2 mins or so for Far Cry to load a level holy moly bats. Painkiller and Half Life 2 were the two game that run the best for me during those days.
I hope NightDive does a remaster of Doom 3. Give it options to let you have features from the BFG edition, but let me have an official way to play proper Doom 3.
There was (I don't know if it still exists anywhere online) a patched version of the Doom 3 exe that you could download to make it run on Windows 10 and (I assume) 11
I love that you stuck to your guns and put Doom 3 as 2nd. Most Doom fans don't even consider Doom 3 to be a "Doom" game but I have always loved it. The lighting is still some of the best in gaming to this day.
Doom 3 is definitely one of my favourite horror shooters ever made, dunno what it is, but every time I start that bad boy up I can't not playthrough the whole campaign, and the co-op mod is so much fun too, me and a mate finished it together back in January and we had an awesome time, also Vicarious Visions Xbox port is really good as well.
I know a lot of people complained about the platforming in Doom Eternal, but I really liked it. It was needed to make it different from Doom (2016) and add more variety in gameplay.
Doom 1 (1993) is my favorite doom game for the fact that the levels are simple yet enjoyable, the soundtrack is amazing and the game is 31 but it looks great and plays way better than other fps games from its time
People complain that it's different but when looking back at Doom there was only two older games (3 if you count 64) that played the same so of course it would be the black sheep. Game design had changed a lot by that point and while most people consider Doom 1/2 fast paced and not scary I think we forget that it was also intended to be a horror game so it was only natural for them to try to make the game more like a horror game now that the technology allowed for it. Personally I enjoyed Doom 3 and I wasn't whining about the flashlight situation as it added to the experience.
Except doom 3 is not the only horror game in the series, there is also Doom 64, the PS1 version of Doom and the RPG Doom games, Doom 3 mostly just fully embraced the horror elements entirerly
Doom 3 is still one of my most memorable times playing a game ever. I rented it at first, loved it, then bought the limited edition for a few dollars off somewhere (both xbox versions btw, actually a very good port). which came with the original Doom and Doom II and that was my first time playing those too. The only thing I don't like about Doom 3 is it probably has the worst hitscanner enemies in the franchise (zsec machine gun and chaingunner zombie, ugh)
Finally someone else in our Doom community who enjoys Doom 3 for the horror game it is I cover all the classics as well as requested wads on my channel it's intended to be guided walkthroughs and I am saving Doom 3 for when I get the upgraded computer setup so I can show it off in all of its spooky Glory excellent list my friend I agree with just about everything though I am a huge fan of TNT that would have been higher on my list just because of the immersive atmosphere it actually feels like you're on a space mission to clear out the demons it doesn't try to be hard just for the sake of it and doom 2016 I'm doing a run through now on the channel really enjoying it so far from one Doom tuber to another you've got my sub my friend
Doom will always be #1 to me, but I have bias due to my nostalgia of rememberimg being a kid and seeing it in gaming magazines about it coming out soon. I was so hyped, there was nothing like it.
Brutal Doom, though not an official game, is my personal favorite because it still has that OG Doom feel to it, just ramped up to 11. And with improved graphics options and add-ons, it's a far improved version of the original games. It really is a ton of fun. Not to mention, it's highly theorized that the executions in Doom 2016 were inspired by those of Brutal Doom.
I think You need to do video on Peril - Quake mod. This mod deserves way more attention than it has. It incredible. Cyberpunk meets medieval on quake 1 engine.
heh, if I was making a list like this, it would be complicated by the existence of Doom 2 'cause as an "in the box" game, I don't really care for it. The level design can be incredibly frustrating and I rarely feel like that super shotgun is given a chance to be as fun as it could be. But as a platform for user-generated map packs and mods it's one of the best things ever made, that's led to some of the best content I've ever played. It might just have to go on twice -- once at the bottom and once at the top! ...maybe I should do it just for the novelty of that
I feel the exact way. Out of the box Doom 2 is.... alright I guess. But I would easily place Doom 2 on top because of the wad/mod scene. Just near limitless amount of fun wads out there.
6:49 In all fairness, the original Doom 64 on the N64 was kind of mediocre. The problem was the low resolution graphics, the N64 applying antialiasing over everything which blurred the picture quality, and the N64 controller just being bad for FPS games in general. Before the game was officially remastered, it got fan ports and one of them was Brutal Doom 64 which honestly is the best way to play Doom 64 today. It dramatically improves the gameplay, and adds a bunch of other stuff. But the official remaster is a great way to play too. There was a great game buried in the original, but the original experience was held back by a number of legitimate issues that were fixed in the remaster.
Top 10 series of all time here, forever one of the best. Here's how i rank em 👇. 6. Doom 64 (the first survival horror doom and it's a damn good one, it may not be as good as doom 3 but still dope) 5. Doom 3 (i don't mind the survival horror feel the game was going for but it hasn't aged as well as the next games. I just prefer the action horror dooms more but still a great game nonetheless) 4. Doom 2016 (if it wasn't for it's short length it could've been ahead of the next one atleast but still an amazing game) 3. Doom 1 (most important, influential fps ever made. doom and it's clones wouldn't exist if it not for this game nor would boomer shooters either. still an amazing game to this day, classic). 2. Doom eternal (though this may be objectively the best game in the series but i personally prefer 1 more. but this one is a masterpiece for sure, the dark ages is going to have a tough time topping this one). 1. Doom 2 (for me, the best doom. It holds strong nostagia for me, has that legendary status, best soundtrack, best dlc/add-ons and an absolute blast to play, straight masterpiece).
As a kid before I was a more 'hardcore' gamer and before I had played any 'real' Doom games I had Doom 2 RPG on my gen 2 ipod touch (circa 2009/10-ish? lol) and it has remained one of my all time favorite mobile games. Sadly that ipod touch is long gone :( so finding out there's a pc port has made my weekend! Funnily enough, I also had that Doom 3 rail shooter on the same ipod, and even as a kid was similarly unimpressed.... Solid list btw! Was happy to see brutal doom get a shoutout. And I know they're not FPSes but for anyone reading this, if you're into platformers and Doom the Mini Doom games are well worth a look too
Finally someone who understands how good doom 3 actually is, it was definetly ahead of its time with the graphics, plasma gun is so satisfying, feels realistic, horror, but the best part is it actually makes you feel like you are on mars
If your into more dialogue, dark as hell, and tons of suspense, Doom3 hands down, if you want all out action, the newer doom games, for me, Doom3 hands down, has also the best ambience sounds of any game made.
I don't know if this was intentional but the doom 2 part was so funny, just how he's casually talking about how much he loves the game as he's standing in one place piling up an insane amount of demon corpses lmao
How dare you mention Brutal Doom that is completely free to download without anyone forcing you too, and is that GZdoom I see?!? Why don't you play the game the way I WANT YOU TO!.. Okay sorry lol, but anyway I personally don't think there is a single bad Doom game out there but I would still say 2 & 3 are my personal favourites. Would love to see a list of Quake and Wolfenstein aswell.
The main reason why I only played the bfg edition of doom 3 was because my parents NEVER let me buy the Original Game growing up cause of how Violent it was
The Doom 3 shotgun is GREAT, you just demonstrated how lethal it was! So what if you have to get close to the demons? You want distance? Use the machinegun and chaingun!
Cool list. I love doom if it wasn’t obvious from the username lol. Been a fan since getting Doom 3 BFG edition on the 360. I would play 1, 2, 3, and 3RoE all the time and probably for like a straight year or 2. I don’t play them much now since I’ve played them to death, but I’ll put on a DOOM game every once in awhile and love it. Love all the games, but If I were to rank the ones I played from least favorite to favorite, I’d go: 1. Doom Eternal 2. Doom 2 3. Doom 64 4. Doom 2016 5. Doom 3 6. Doom 1 Cool video and hope to see more rankings in the future. Also off topic, but if you’re not in the know Killing Floor 3 got announced yesterday and it looks interesting. I only played 2 and really enjoy that game whenever I’m listening to music. Wanna play 1 whenever I get a pc.
I thought 2016 was my favorite and I finally played Eternal. I have not started a game that clicks and becomes fun the whole way through. It’s exhausting. Not a game to play when tired but it’s extremely fun in a way no other game has ever made me feel. I love Halo, COD, Battlefield 5 and Wolfenstein New Order/ New Colossus. Doom Eternal is up there between COD and Wolfenstein as my favorite shooters of all time. The game never feels cheap even when you die there’s no arbitrary reason you died. You die because you made a mistake and not because the games AI pulled some cheap crap out of their @ss. Doom Eternal is now in my top 5 shooters of all time
I agree with you about the doom 3 shotgun. Every single "doom 3 shotgun is bad" video I have seen, they show nothing but poor aim or shooting from too far away then say, look how terrible it is.
Personally mime would be TNT, 3, Plutonia, 64, Ressurection of Evil, Ultimate Doom, 2016, Eternal and Doom 2. 2 because of how easy is to just casually play, while Eternal requires some good time to get on the grip
Imo, the only pro of DOOM 3: BFG Edition is the high refresh rate support. Yeah, you can run the original DOOM 3 with the dhewm3 source port above 60 FPS, but the refresh rate is still locked at 60hz. If you up the refresh rate limit anyway, the game becomes super fast and broken. This is fixed in BFG Edition.
I would probably have the same ranking, despite not being the biggest fan of 3, but the existence of Prey 06 justifies it, i know its not Doom, but without Doom 3 there would be no Prey 06 and its probably one of my favorite games ever
Doom eternal is extremely hectic and the big fight are pure insanity. Its a achievement, creating something like this!! I just finished the - god knows how many - gameplay of it and DLCs. Problem is, u cant take it further. Its already too much. It kind of gives me heart attacks already. I hope new doom get back to a darker, slower paced, satan fueled hell..
Doom 2 is still the No.1 imho. I replayed it far more than any of the other Doom games. I liked Eternal, but I couldn't last 30mins without suffering pretty bad motion sickness😂😂
For me it's Final Doom. Twice as fast as Doom 2, you can crank the speed up to absolutely insane speed on nightmare and in a single room there's more major demons than the entire Doom 2 game. It sorted the men from the boys that's for sure.
Having less of an ability to defend yourself is literally what horror games do to make games more scary. How good are you at fighting in Silent Hill? How much ammo do you have? How quick can you move? etc etc.
It's just doom 2016 in VR. I don't think that's enough to make another spot. I also don't think doom 2016 is the type of game that works that great in VR.
@@Jarekthegamingdragon I just bought it on Steam recently. It does have alot assets reused. But the story is completely new and the combat is actually pretty fun in VR. It also have some interesting control scheme, like you flip the controller to jump and using teleport to glory kill stuned enemies. The control takes some time to get used to. But when you do, the combat loop just feels equally fun as DOOM 2016 .
I haven't really played Doom Eternal yet, except for a few minutes in a friend's hardware, so I can't really talk about it yet, bbut Doom3 is my favorite game ever. Alongside with Half-Life 2 and F.E.A.R., it makes my top 3. Next ones would be Half-Life, Doom 64 and Blood. I really wish they had made that Doom 4.
For me 6 Doom 64 5 Doom 2016 4 cd...Doom1.... Doom1.exe 3 Doom 3 2 Doom eternal 1 cd....Doom II.... Doom II.exe Every game are awesome.... Is so hard to put a "top", i remember used MS DOS for doom 1 and Doom II
Cannot agree more with this list Doom 3 was my first doom game, and i think it deserved its place, im an unreal and deus ex fan so I like these types of games. Also doom eternal is still the best in my opinion
Ok I ignore this misstep with Doom 3. Man I hated this game back when it came out. Because of it's lighting decisions it was unplayable for me. But I finished the main game anyway. A year ago or so I replayed Doom 3 in the BFG edition and it was quite playable. I completed the main game and mission packs then. But I agree with your Doom Eternal decision. Especially the statement that it has to make "click" in order to get it. When I played Doom Eternal the first time I barely finished it on the second difficulty mode. It was quite a chore. And then I watched people playing it on Ultra Nightmare in 2 hours or so and then I saw how to play the game. After this I managed to finish the game and both DLCs on Nightmare (not Ultra Nightmare - I'm not insane) and it was a hell of a fun.

I think You need to do video on Peril - Quake mod. This mod deserves way more attention than it has. It incredible. Cyberpunk meets medieval on quake 1 engine.
heh, if I was making a list like this, it would be complicated by the existence of Doom 2
'cause as an "in the box" game, I don't really care for it.
6. Doom 64 (the first survival horror doom and it's a damn good one, it may not be as good as doom 3 but still dope)
5. Doom 3 (i don't mind the survival horror feel the game was going for but it hasn't aged as well as the next games. I just prefer the action horror dooms more but still a great game nonetheless)
4. Doom 2016 (if it wasn't for it's short length it could've been ahead of the next one atleast but still an amazing game)
I love Doom Eternal because of how it forces you to use everything you have to take out the enemy horde and I love it so much. Great video!
And I know they're not FPSes but for anyone reading this, if you're into platformers and Doom the Mini Doom games are well worth a look too
first doom game i played was doom 3 on the og xbox in like 2005ish, i was like 6 when i played it and had nightmares after playing it lol
I knew you were going to put Doom 3 high up on that list just by listening to you talk about the BFG edition 😂 I agree 100% with your list picks btw!
Finally someone who understands how good doom 3 actually is, it was definetly ahead of its time with the graphics, plasma gun is so satisfying, feels realistic, horror, but the best part is it actually makes you feel like you are on mars
If Doom Eternal taught me anything, it's that I don't like that style of game. It was fun, but I felt no inclination to come back to it.
💯
Same, I understand if other people like it but my fingers can’t move that fast
If your into more dialogue, dark as hell, and tons of suspense, Doom3 hands down, if you want all out action, the newer doom games, for me, Doom3 hands down, has also the best ambience sounds of any game made.
I've never even heard of the rpg games before. I'd love to see a video on them.
I don't know if this was intentional but the doom 2 part was so funny, just how he's casually talking about how much he loves the game as he's standing in one place piling up an insane amount of demon corpses lmao
Glad you did this list my friend
How dare you mention Brutal Doom that is completely free to download without anyone forcing you too, and is that GZdoom I see?!? Why don't you play the game the way I WANT YOU TO!..
Okay sorry lol, but anyway I personally don't think there is a single bad Doom game out there but I would still say 2 & 3 are my personal favourites. Would love to see a list of Quake and Wolfenstein aswell.
Pregnancy test doom is goated tbf.
I always thought Quake 4 & Doom 3 where underrated
My dad had Doom RPG on his phone and it was actually my first experience playing a doom game ever
Me and my modded doom: *happy rip and tear noises*
For me, this is the mainline ranking (Worst to best):
DOOM 3
DOOM 64
DOOM 1
DOOM 2016
DOOM 2
DOOM Eternal.
I'm a hardcore doom 3 shotgun defender.
Great, glad to see my Doom RPG and Doom 2 RPG ports on this list. 👍
Honsetly I think Doom 1 is better than Doom 2. Doom 2's new enemies and weapons are nice but I HATE it's levels
Always nice to see a fellow Doom 3 enjoyer.
I love Doom 3 and it's one of the few games i find myself replaying every year or so.
Love all the games, but If I were to rank the ones I played from least favorite to favorite, I’d go:
1. Doom Eternal
2. Doom 2
3. Doom 64
4. Doom 2016
5. Doom 3
6. Doom 1
Cool video and hope to see more rankings in the future. Also off topic, but if you’re not in the know Killing Floor 3 got announced yesterday and it looks interesting. I only played 2 and really enjoy that game whenever I’m listening to music. Wanna play 1 whenever I get a pc.
If he played guncaster and counted it, top 8 for sure. My guess would be between brutal Doon and doom 3. Thoughts?
9:21 *2020 GOTY.*
It’s difficult at first, but eventually it’s like riding a bike and everything clicks.
Doom 3 was so underrated when it was released!
I have a blast playing it in VR in 2024!!
Perfect video for doom's 30th anniversary!
I first thought we was flipping off the pinkie💀💀💀💀
Doom Eternal is now in my top 5 shooters of all time
I'll always favor the first one, it was so good they made a 2nd one that was basically the same just bigger but still good.
I agree with you about the doom 3 shotgun. Every single "doom 3 shotgun is bad" video I have seen, they show nothing but poor aim or shooting from too far away then say, look how terrible it is.
Doom 2 super shotgun reload sound and animation is so satisfying. Definitely my favorite weapon in the series.
Just finished Doom64 and it’s my fav Doom so far. I’ve yet to play 2016 and Eternal. Bought all this when Bethesda had their sale last week😂
I recently got into doom. I adore the music and game
Personally mime would be TNT, 3, Plutonia, 64, Ressurection of Evil, Ultimate Doom, 2016, Eternal and Doom 2. 2 because of how easy is to just casually play, while Eternal requires some good time to get on the grip
JAREK! You put Doom 3 so high! Excellent!!
My favorite is the first one, a classic that ages like fine wine.
Ranking wolfenstein from worst to best next 🙏
Doom 2 is still the No.1 imho. I replayed it far more than any of the other Doom games. I liked Eternal, but I couldn't last 30mins without suffering pretty bad motion sickness😂😂
For me it's Final Doom. Twice as fast as Doom 2, you can crank the speed up to absolutely insane speed on nightmare and in a single room there's more major demons than the entire Doom 2 game. It sorted the men from the boys that's for sure.
Can't really understand why people think that you can't feel scared having a shotgun? Like, if you don't have weapons you automatically become scared?
Having less of an ability to defend yourself is literally what horror games do to make games more scary. How good are you at fighting in Silent Hill? How much ammo do you have? How quick can you move? etc etc.
I played doom 3 back in the days and started playing classic doom games this year with doom 1, 2 and 64. Love them all ❤
just bought the Doom collection on steam, downloading right now as i watch…
That intro is delicious.
Been playing doom 64 remaster. It’s awesome.
What about DOOM:VFR? It was rough on launch, but after some patches it works great now. Wouldn't be suprised if you put this vr game on top 5.
@@jetwowczhan544 Fast paced boomer shooters just don't play to the strengths of VR. Ironically something like Doom 3 works much better in VR.
Someone who knows about FINAL DOOM!!! Praise yeshua hamashiach.. you are awesome
To be fair, BFG edition does have a cool 3d mode if you have a 3d TV.
For me
6 Doom 64
5 Doom 2016
4 cd...Doom1.... Doom1.exe
3 Doom 3
2 Doom eternal
1 cd....Doom II.... Doom II.exe
Every game are awesome.... Is so hard to put a "top", i remember used MS DOS for doom 1 and Doom II
Finally someone that appreciates doom 3
Doom is just one of those franchises that don’t have a bad game (save Final Doom, which wasn’t bad, it was just a map pack from the previous game s).
5:27 yep doom 1 aged well, most 3d games from the early 00s are unplayable today with how outdated they are
I have the impression that I already watched this.
holy fuck yeah please give us a doom rpg video, obscure stuff like this is always nice
For me, no game has induced sweaty palms quite like Doom Eternal.
Finally someone giving Doom 3 its due! A different type of Doom game, but a fantastic Doom game.
Finally, I found probably the closest opinion to mine, cool top!
Cannot agree more with this list
Doom 3 was my first doom game, and i think it deserved its place, im an unreal and deus ex fan so I like these types of games.
