    Not a pilot but I've always had a passion for aviation since i was a kid. I have wanted to get my license since I was 13 years old but life got in the way. My first flight was in a 172 when i was 14 with a man who was building custom cabinets for my parents house. I found out he was training and had just soloed so i worked my charm and convinced him to take me up on one of his training flights. We were practicing stalls and i was instantly hooked. I just turned 50 and decided that now is the time to pursue that dream so im currently consuming every bit of information i can through books and media online. The algorithm directed me to your videos as a consequence and I really love watching, and more importantly ,listening to what you have to say as an experienced and clearly competent pilot. I have learned a lot from your channel. Keep up the good work and ill be watching!

    Hi there, my Father was a captain for BOAC/BA on VC10s and as a child I wanted to be a pilot. I was accepted into Hamble BA’s commercial flying school but my course was chopped two months before I was due to start training. I applied to the RAF and was offered a navigators role but turned that down. When I was 35 I self funded myself on a commercial pilot course did about 100 hrs when that school went bust due to the recession. So I have gone through life never fulfilling my dream job. I did become a software engineer working for BAE Systems, so not a complete failure.
    I am impressed seeing your video and how at ease you are with the CJ3 and air traffic control. Thank you for being out there on RUclips and sharing your time with us. Great job…

      When I read your comment, I thought the VC10 was a typo (meaning DC-10), but then I thought maybe he meant Vickers VC-10?! That's going way back and what I consider the golden age of aviation! I'd love to just sit and talk to someone who got to fly those aircraft. My dad recently passed, but listening to him talk about the old Learjets (23/24s) is kind of neat. I'm thankful I got to learn on traditional instruments, but also thankful for the wonderful avionics that are in newer aircraft today.
      I appreciate the comments on the comfort in the CJ3+. I can assure you that took a while to be comfortable in the plane! There is a lot going on and took a while to "get ahead" of the aircraft. But, the Citation is generally a really easy / docile airplane to fly.
      What sort of things are you working on with BAE?

    I'm an 80-year-old military retiree and also retired from the local Sheriff's Office. Flew as a private pilot from 1965 to 1970. Two of my required cross countries were in a Cessna 140 taildragger. Try doing that nowadays. Got my private at New Orleans Lakefront in 1965. Came back for a second tour in New Orleans in 1969. At that time, I joined the Navy Flying Club at Naval Air Station New Orleans and was flying a Cessna 182. After being transferred away from New Orleans, my active flying days were over. I did take a demo flight in a sailplane outside of Phoenix and had control of the plane from tow release until the demo pilot took us home. That was my first time flying with a stick and it felt very intuitive. I had read up on how to recognize and turn towards thermals and was actually gaining some altitude until time was up.
    Now about your videos. Really enjoy the spectacular views out the window - just as good as Premier 1 Driver. I like that you do not fast forward the takeoffs and landings. I like watching IFR approaches under actual IFR conditions. I tend to favor turboprop videos, especially with the PC-12, Also like to watch flights on small regional carriers. Going to subscribe and will be watching a lot more of your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  Год назад +1

      I think the takeoffs and landings are the most interesting parts of aviation videos, and the analytics that RUclips provides seem to back that up!
      I wish I would have thought of making videos when we had the PC-12. It was a great plane that I have about 500 hours in.
      I hope to get some real IFR approaches, but I'm at the mercy of our flying schedule and the weather!

Once a shop rat, always a shop rat. I've always wanted to learn to fly, but I only have usable vision in one eye and I'm color blind to boot! I love watching channels like yours. I try to find people who not just show themselves piloting an aircraft, but narrate what you are thinking as a pilot and exactly what you are doing with the controls. I want to vicariously fly the aircraft through you. Also, being a mechanic I love to geek out on how things work. I generally fly with a few other pilots and about 5 years ago we collectively decided to concentrate on improving our radio work. We looked into a lot of ICAO/ATC phraseology and found we were all very lax at how we talked on the radio. We were mainly being very sloppy and too verbose saying stuff like "checking in," "out of," "with you," or answering calls with "for 2WB" (which terribly sounds like "42WB").
      I'll tell you this though... It's EXTREMELY hard to break habits you've been doing for 20 years! But, we all said we were going to do it, and all "called" each other on our mistakes, and after a bit we all started sounding better and using less time on the radios.
      I appreciate you watching and noticing that sort of thing. Please let me know how your instruction comes along!

      My flight was really interesting and it included the pilot jumping up out of the seat, running to the back of the gondola, opening a window and pointing out sharks in the ocean. I was with a group of other fixed-wing pilots all with perpelexed looks on our faces, to which the blimp pilot exclaimed "what? It's not like we can get out of the way of anyone that might hit us!" 😀

    I recalled in the late 80's when I first received my Cessna Citation 501/551 Captain type rating. I found it to be really challenging to flying a complex approach as a single pilot in a jet aircraft. A copilot is always a welcomed member of my team, especially helping with the radios and running the checklists. Looking at your CJ3 cockpit, Wow! I am so impressed with the EFIS system on the airplane. It is far superior to the flight deck of my beloved Boeing B757 which I flew for many years. Very nice!

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  Год назад +1

      Yeah, avionics have evolved and taken an incredible amount of workload off us pilots, and the CJ3+ (with the Garmin avionics) have simplified the cockpit. Setting up approaches back in the 80s/90s with your conventional six-pack was a pretty high workload. We don't have to do any of that. It's done for us.
      Maybe I'll do a tour of the cockpit at some point and you'll see that there are very few switches and knobs. The avionics/computers take care of a lot of stuff for you, and the engines have FADEC too. That being said, it still took me a while to feel comfortable flying single pilot. For as easy as it looks on video, you have to know where everything is. If you don't, you'll find yourself staring at the touch controllers and not flying the plane. Things can go south very quickly in that scenario. Having someone in the right seat, even if they're just working radios makes things even easier.
      To speak in generalities, after coming out of school with my first type rating, it took me about a year to to feel really comfortable in the left seat, and another year to feel comfortable on my own (flying about 150 hours per year). Although I don't always have someone in the right seat, most of the time I have another typed pilot on board that could help if needed.

    Thanks for the great video. Please keep them coming. One of my 3 fav pilots doesn't post videos much anymore. So, I've been looking for someone else to follow. I am a meteorologist at one of the FAA En Route Centers (ARTCC). I enjoy all the aspects of seeing behind the scenes with these in-cockpit videos. It's also interesting to see when low-level wind shear, turbulence, and icing occur.

      @@AccidentalAviator I’m just getting started. I finished my ground school with GoldSeal and have my Discovery flight next week with High Tide Aviation in Southport/Oak Island. I was planning on using Cape Fear Flying Club. But if you have a suggestion I am not committed to anyone. I’m extremely motivated and have done every bit of studying I can do without actually getting in a plane!😁

      @@scottdeluca2973 I can't really recommend one over another because I've never done any training here in Wilmington. I do have a few friends that have done a lot of training with Cape Fear, but that's about the limit of my knowledge of local flight schools.
      I've been in the area since 2010 and have yet to fly into Southport or Odell Williamson!

      @@AccidentalAviator oh wow, I moved to NC in 2011 and closer to the Wilmington area in 2019. My plan is (like anything else training related) to meet with a potential CFI and see how I feel. An initial interaction will usually tell me whether our personalities will harmonize and if the training will be to a standard that I’ll need it to be. So we will see what happens, in the meantime I look forward to seeing more of your videos, and maybe one day I can “accidentally” become a part time professional aviator myself!😉😁

    Hi, first time watching your RUclips channel. Very busy last sector of the flight, impressively handled. I’m a 2,500 hour UK IR BE58 Baron Pilot, flying approx 100 hours a year around UK and Europe. Been flying since 89.

      @AccidentalAviator  Год назад

      I would love to get over to Europe for some flying at some point. Have you flown in the USA at all? I'm wondering how different it is.

      @davidkeirle8492 Год назад +1

      You would be welcome to join me in the Baron if you make it here. I have flown a few times in the US and have always enjoyed it. Definitely more relaxing. I have an FAA license and IR, on the back of my UK license, as the Baron is a N reg aircraft. Flying, and particularly currency, is more prescriptive in the UK, with mandatory flight tests every year. Landing fees are applicable at every airfield and can be expensive. But it is always fun!

    Always impressed by people who can fly single pilot cockpit. I've been in the 737-800 for a few years and recently started training on the 787. The 787 is so simplified and whilst I wouldn't want to fly it alone it's definitely getting to the point where you could. Albeit being very busy.

    • @AccidentalAviator

      The CJ3+ is pretty simple and most things are computerized now (as I'm sure you know flying the 800 and 787s! It's always nice to have someone sitting right seat, even working the radios takes a lot of workload off. I enjoy both though (single and dual pilot operations).

    I always enjoy videos of the "CJ Series." I flew the "straight CJ" for a few years and really liked the versatility of the airframe and engines. However, it was the only aircraft in a sixty year career flying flying helicopters and airplanes where I actually declared an EMERGENCY, at FL330. Both fuel filters lit up the CAWS panel within 30 seconds of each other. Descending to St. George, Utah and subsequent touchdown with both engines running. Drained fuel after shutdown and added 120 gallons to settle overnight and then sump again in the AM. Lengthy run the next AM and then VFR climb to 17,500; over the airport, and pick up the IFR back to home base. Most likely cause was NO PRIST injected at last fuel stop; even though FBO had a "record" that we had requested PRIST. Later, I would always watch the fueling truck PRIST barrel to see if it was actually injecting during the fueling. As for "premixed" from the refinery, when tested, about one out of five loads have NO PRIST! So, moral of the story, buy a PRIST testing kit if you have a concern.

      Holy Cow! That's a crazy story! I've read about 2 CJs having dual engine failure because a line guy accidentally added some sort of diesel additive instead of prist, and they dead-sticked into somewhere in Georgia. The CJ3+ has a fuel/oil heat exchanger so prist isn't needed (but can be used). We recently went on an air-journey trip where someone had a CJ1 that brought and added prist to every load of fuel. That's a great story and something to learn from!
