    When I got my instrument ticket in 2001 we were using steam gauges, paper charts, no GPS and no autopilot. Any deviation from the plan was a huge deal especially in a busy environment. "Direct enter enter" sure is nice. Good video for my student pilot daughter who will be training in this new technical environment.

      Same here! I got my instrument in 2003 in my Arrow. 6-pack and no GPS at the time. I'm very thankful that I learned on the 6 pack. I think it made me (and anyone who learned on them) a better pilot for when the fancy avionics break!
      Don't get me wrong though, GPS, ADSB and all of the fancy avionics that are out there now have made flying much safer, and your situational awareness is outstanding!

    Favorite airplane??? My first airplane... in 1974, my Dad (WWII & Korea USMC fighter pilot) and I bought a '56TC Turbo Baron. Probably the 'nicest' plane I flew was a CJ-2+. 1,000 hours in a 402 hauling the mail 'taught me how to fly,' notwithstanding 15 years of flight instructing. When the owner sold the CJ2, I retired from flying. I pulled up your email address from your channel, and sent you a PDF copy of my book, BROKEN CONTROLLER: an Air Traffic Controllers Story. They don't make twin engine aircraft like they did back in the 50s and 60s. I bet that was a beauty of a plane! I think they renamed the CJ2+ to the M2 after a bit, and it's just a smaller version of this plane. We debated purchasing an M2 or a CJ3+ but ultimately wound up with the CJ3+ and I'm happy that was the choice that was made!

    Great flight! Thanks for including the route (even today the preferred one on SkyVector), Good for you to make a mental note when you'r over Lndg-mass before takeoff, smart thinking. Camera's and sound are perfect and I do appreciate your top down views of the MFD/PFD II/GTC's. Yep, canceling the VNAV disengages the vertical part of the SID and keeps you steady on the lateral part. Thanks for sharing all of this with us.

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  11 месяцев назад +1

      The first time that Garmin-ism caught me was coming out of FXE headed to Tallahassee on a Departure Procedure that doesn't exist anymore, but it had a "at or below crossing restriction" at 10,000 feet (I believe) and ATC gave me a "Climb and Maintain 15 Thousand." The plane started levelling off at 10 so I kicked the autopilot off and hand flew it up to 15.
      It took me a second to figure out what was happening, and now I know to look for it each time. That's something that wasn't taught in my Initial and really underscores why you need to understand everything the avionics are doing!

    • @raccoonair
      @raccoonair 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@AccidentalAviator Yeah, good example (funny). Most of the times, ATC throws you off the SID or STAR, but you have to realize which part they alter. On the MFD of the G1000 you have a Disable VNAV soft key for these situations. For lateral cancellations you just switch to HDG or NAV (Direct), but you need to know this and is often not taught. I do agree; Avionics: Trust, but verify!

    My favorite planes to fly in Microsoft Flight Simulator are the TBM 960 and the Cessna T37. But I usually have to forego the fun and fly the Archer on the simulator because that is what I am getting my instrument training in and the instruments are closer to the actual instruments in the plane that I train in. I enjoy watching your videos greatly as it offers a different perspective and one that I most probably will never see.

      I haven't flown a small(er) plane into there in quite some time though, for the last 15 years it's mostly been Pilatus or CJ3+, so I wonder if it might have something to do with being closer to that building.
      It would be weird though because their only approach to 27 is an RNAV/GPS approach and I've shot that many times without issue.

    Hi...new subscriber here! Lifelong aviation enthusiast. I would love to get Microsoft Flight Sim some day to experience the thrills. This is the second video I've watched of yours and I really enjoy all the explaining you give. Easy to understand. I have even Google'd some terms used to get more definitions. When do you choose to switch off Autopilot when landing? Also, for this trip's take off and landing, I noticed you had the yoke on an angle. Could you please explain why this was needed? Thank you for taking me along for the ride. I'd love to climb aboard and join you. All the best. I'll keep watching!

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  11 месяцев назад

      I appreciate you watching! If you are confused about anything I've said, just ask and I'll try to elaborate more.
      With regards to the autopilot on landing, I generally kick it off around or just before the time that I've been cleared for the approach. If I have a copilot on board I might do it a bit earlier. There really is no "right" answer to this question other than flying on the autopilot reduces the amount of work that you're having to do. Same thing goes for takeoff. If I'm flying single pilot I'll generally fly to at least 5 or 10 thousand feet, but if I'm coming out of some place that requires a lot of step climbs and multiple radio / heading changes I might put the autopilot on right after I'm off the ground. If I have a copilot on board, I'll generally fly up to 20-30 thousand feet before I kick on the autopilot.
      With regards to the controls, you generally have the controls turned into where the wind is coming from This keeps the wind from "lifting" the wing prematurely on takeoff or abruptly on landing. If you look closely at this videos landing, the wind was coming out of the northeast (to the left) and gusting pretty good. You can see me keeping the left wing down and using a lot of right rudder peddle to keep the plane straight down the runway. Once you touch down it's important (extremely in the jet) to keep that aileron into the wind. If I were to immediately go neutral the chances of the plane fishtailing and/or lifting the left wing increase.
      I've had multiple instructors say "continue to fly the plane till you're at taxiing sped."
      I hope that answers your questions! Thank you for subscribing!

Highest Complex time in Arrow. Not current since 2000. Chose not to take IFR check ride after being signed off to do so. Enjoy the sim for IFR and light/med jets to get experience I couldn’t probably get irl anytime soon.

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  11 месяцев назад +1

      No, currently the only way to check off items is pushing the GTC joystick in. Some people like the abbreviated laminated checklist, but once I got it all transferred into the GTC, I really enjoy having it there. If you ever get distracted while running a checklist, you know exactly where you left off.
      On other G3000 versions you can have checklist that automatically check items off as you perform them (flows) which is nice, but our is not that fancy as of yet :-)

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  11 месяцев назад +1

      This is a great question and a very keen eye on your part!
      What you're seeing from the back camera with regards to avionics is called "banding" and it's when the frame rate of the camera does not match the refresh rate of the monitors. The camera pointed directly at the avionics I have adjusted the frame rate to be 60fps which matches the refresh rate of the avionics, so it shows a pretty clear picture.
      If I would change the back camera to 60fps, the problem is all of the avionics would be in clear focus, but the outside-the-window view would turn extremely white/pale. If you view some of my other videos, I accidentally set the side camera to this and even though I'm flying in blue skies, it looks like I'm in the clouds. So, I've gone with the auto setting and just allowed the GoPro to do what it thinks is best (which results in really good out-the-window visuals)
      If someone knows how to fix this issue (either by GoPro settings, video editing, or even a new/different camera) I'm game to listen. I've read a lot about lighting, frame rate, shutter speeds and the like, but have yet to come up with something perfect!

    • @raccoonair
      @raccoonair 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@AccidentalAviator The 60fps to match the refresh rate of the avionics works perfect. I only know that in DaVinci Resolve you can alter the frame rate of individual parts of your clip and change color resolution in the "Color Page"; maybe this can help you out somehow.

    • @AccidentalAviator
      @AccidentalAviator  11 месяцев назад

      @@raccoonair Actually I misspoke. It's not FPS, it's shutter speed. The shutter speed needs to match the refresh rate of the avionics, and (to my knowledge) it's not something fixed after-the-fact. I'm still searching for a good solution!
