Hannah I found you via Calum's channel I would be your gay best friend if I didn't live in Australia. #WAHHHHHH In other news, we need a language like this today.
If you search RUclips for 'Julian and Sandy' you can hear Polari being used quite often in a series of BBC Radio sketches from the 1960s. They're also pretty funny.
There's this series of sci-fi books called the Everness series and a lot of the main characters actually speak in polari and at the back of the book there's this whole list of polari words and their meanings which is quite cool. For instance: omi means man/guy, palone means woman/girl and an omi-palone would be an effeminate man or homosexual. One of my favorites is a shush-bag, which is basically a hold-all or backpack.
***** it does! In the book it's the language used in a London from a parallel world and it's called palari, but at the end of the book it's explained that it finds it roots in seventeenth century London and that it was originally a thieves language
If you want to hear some Polari in action and have a right laugh, youtube "Round the Horne", and check out the Julian and Sandy bits. It's a radio show from the 60s with Kenneth Williams and it's Fantabulosa!
I'm not sure if you've already done it, but could you maybe do a discussion on why contraception is often free yet other necessities such as tampons or even the basics like food aren't? I think that'd be really interesting especially from you :)
the word bona might come from italian (i'm not sure just guessing). i'm italian and bona has two meaning in italian dialects: - in the central part of italy it is a rude adjective with which to call and attractive woman - in the northern part of italy it means "stop", "that's enough"
I would love to come to the Potter, but London-Brighton (the cycling) is this Sunday and I'm doing that. Can't exactly be in two places at once (although I can thanks to quantum superpositions)
I loved this video because I just discovered Polari (via the BBC, ironically) and I am so fascinated and tickled by it, and I see you are too. My favorite Polari word is probably dolly, which I understand to mean something like lovely or beautiful, and it's my favorite because it reminds me of Dolly Parton.
Varda comes from Italian, we say guarda :D fantabulosa as well, not sure about bona, we say buono/buona :D Hannah you are hilarious, I'm gonna subscribe :D
Oh thanks for the video :) And I wish I was around on Sunday but I will be in London on the 24th only to meet my partner at the airport. If we knew about your screening we would have altered the flight dates as my parter is a huge fan of both Harry and I am a fan of your videos any way I hope your Screening goes well and you have a great time :)
Well palare reminds me of parlare which means talking in Italian, fantabulosa is a mix of fantastica (fantastic)e favolosa (fabulous) and bona is like the slang in Italian for hot
I'm trying to figure out why they came up with words for such normal things in Polari. I would have thought only sexual references would have to be put into code.
Great video as always, but some of these are wrong. For instance, "bona" is a Latin word meaning good, and kamp/camp was in use way before the 1960s (think about Mein Kampf by Hitler that at the time was translated into My Camp, showing that isn't a new word). But anyway like I said, great video, and thank you for introducing me to this wonderful language!
oliverlaurasykes Mein Kampf does not mean "My Camp". It means "My Struggle". While Kampf and kamp are obviously very similar in spelling, they are very different in every other linguistic category.
+Hannah Witton +Margo Grover Oops how silly of me, I should have perhaps looked up that about "Mein Kampf" before commenting, and the Italian influences thing completely slipped my mind. Thank you for correcting me, and I'm sorry for calling you out on something you were correct about!
Technically in this context it's Italian. Italian is one of the primarily sources of Polari vocabulary though it's been beaten down by being partially filtered through the Lingua Franca pidgin and a thorough anglicization through the generations.
so you mean to say that you're showing HP1 on my birthday, in London... when I can't get there because I'm doing charity work all day? :'( (excellent video as always though).
"doing the dishes" can be used in English to mean a regular or mundane task but it comes from Polari in which "dishes" means "butt", a reference to anal sex as being a vanilla ("boring") sexual activity.
"When being gay was still illegal" It still is in near enough 80 countries. But I hope in our lifetimes, we can say that statement in its full glory. Also found this origin of camp: camp (adj.) "tasteless," 1909, homosexual slang, of uncertain origin, perhaps from mid-17c. French camper "to portray, pose" (as in se camper "put oneself in a bold, provocative pose"); (www.etymonline.com/)
some more words for your Palare list: Omi: Man Palone Woman Nante (Pronounced Nan-tee) None, no, nothing : I have no money = I got nante handbag Shush: To steal Shushbag: Holdall Lallies: Legs Thews: Thighs Charver: Sexcual inetercourse Handbag/Measures= Money National Handbag: Dole Riah (Pronounced RYE-AH - nor REE-AH) Hair Riahshusher / Crimper: Hairdresser Chicken: Young man Mince: An effeminate walk Latty: House or Apartment Lilly: Police Charper: To search Charpering Omi: Policeman Dish: Buttocks Good luck !
swag = secretly we are gay. throwback to the 60s

Hannah I found you via Calum's channel I would be your gay best friend if I didn't live in Australia. #WAHHHHHH
In other news, we need a language like this today.
Very interesting! Please do some more history videos Hannah, you seem to have so much knowledge!
Wow, I live in Northern Italy and in my region's dialect "varda" means looking!

this is both hilarious and educational, I never realised such a language existed in the 1960's.
If you 'order lau your luppers on the strillers bona' it means you play the piano well.
THIS IS MY FAVE VIDEO NOW IT'S SO CUTEEE
If you want to hear some Polari in action and have a right laugh, youtube "Round the Horne", and check out the Julian and Sandy bits. It's a radio show from the 60s with Kenneth Williams and it's Fantabulosa!
I had never heard of polari before, this is so cool!
I'm never going to be able to look at the phrase "going to camp" the same way again
I'm not sure if you've already done it, but could you maybe do a discussion on why contraception is often free yet other necessities such as tampons or even the basics like food aren't? I think that'd be really interesting especially from you :)

so this has been up for almost an hour now but im not seeing it in my feed.. wtfuck youtube? fuck?!
Hahaha, this was brilliant ! Informative, but mostly, FUN ! Bona video :D
I like Hannah. I'm going to subscribe 😃 All my recent subscriptions have been through Calum.
So interesting! And Callum has such a cute smile
Some more Polari words; lallies = legs, omi = man, palone = woman. Also, I believe 'riah' is pronounced 'ry-ah' rather then 'ree-ah'.
Bona, in some Italian dialects, is also referred to a girl that is physically attractive.
ugh hannah but ill be london next weekend. watch the next movie next weekend!
Naff has made my day! I was so bored until I watched this!
You two should discuss the old hanky code and obsolete Gay symbols.
I would love to come to the Potter, but London-Brighton (the cycling) is this Sunday and I'm doing that. Can't exactly be in two places at once (although I can thanks to quantum superpositions)
***** Thank you :) !!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha,ha ! this was fun. The troubble is, I remember alot of these words from the 70's..........I must be getting old LOL.
I loved this video because I just discovered Polari (via the BBC, ironically) and I am so fascinated and tickled by it, and I see you are too. My favorite Polari word is probably dolly, which I understand to mean something like lovely or beautiful, and it's my favorite because it reminds me of Dolly Parton.
its spelled differently but I wasn't looking at the screen when you were saying 'riah' and i just burst out laughing because its my name lol
I learned so much in this video!
Hannah is a real pretty girl you both look so good together x
This was super interesting! I'd never heard of Polari before!
Love this video and you two are so funny :)
I think bona is actually from the Latin 'bonus-a-I'm' which means good
Love seeing young people learning the language! BTW riah is pronounced like "higher" or "dryer" - just so you know cherubsXXX
Varda comes from Italian, we say guarda :D fantabulosa as well, not sure about bona, we say buono/buona :D Hannah you are hilarious, I'm gonna subscribe :D
I'd never heard of this before. Very interesting!
I would love to learn this
Oh thanks for the video :) And I wish I was around on Sunday but I will be in London on the 24th only to meet my partner at the airport. If we knew about your screening we would have altered the flight dates as my parter is a huge fan of both Harry and I am a fan of your videos any way I hope your Screening goes well and you have a great time :)
***** We will :)
Isn't bona just the feminine form of bonus, which means "good" in Latin?
Well palare reminds me of parlare which means talking in Italian, fantabulosa is a mix of fantastica (fantastic)e favolosa (fabulous) and bona is like the slang in Italian for hot
and since Italian comes from Latin I think it could be
My favourite Polari word is titivate (to tidy/clean up)
It's sad that this gay history is not being taught. I did not know about this. I would love to have a secret language.
I'm trying to figure out why they came up with words for such normal things in Polari. I would have thought only sexual references would have to be put into code.
this was really interesting! Had no idea this was even a thing.
Great video as always, but some of these are wrong. That was actually so interesting :) xxx
Bona means good in Latin. Thanks Latin class
Technically in this context it's Italian. Italian is one of the primarily sources of Polari vocabulary though it's been beaten down by being partially filtered through the Lingua Franca pidgin and a thorough anglicization through the generations.
Oooh I loved this ❤️
Now wondering how much of the language I used growing up in the East End was actually Polari and not just cockney. Is someone having a tin bath?!
so you mean to say that you're showing HP1 on my birthday, in London... when I can't get there because I'm doing charity work all day? :'( (excellent video as always though).
I originally learned about polari through a Morrissey song, I'm trying to learn it so I can just use it day to day lmao
Bone a Rear sounds like a good night xD
I learnt about Polari in English Language this year at school
Words that we use frequently that stem from Polari are also words like 'bitch' as a verb, so all homophobes that say 'to bitch'....well haha
That was so interesting! I love learning stuff :) xxx
"doing the dishes" can be used in English to mean a regular or mundane task but it comes from Polari in which "dishes" means "butt", a reference to anal sex as being a vanilla ("boring") sexual activity.
What is his channel? The Linked Video is now private
"When being gay was still illegal" It still is in near enough 80 countries. But I hope in our lifetimes, we can say that statement in its full glory.

Hannah, just so you know and don't repeat your mistakes - the word "g*psy" is a slur (used against the Rroma people).
THIS VIDEO WAS BONA
Riah is pronounced: 'rye-uh'
Oh Hannah... I am definitely not gay
Fantabulous sounds like Harry potter
it sounds like a childish spanish-speaking teenager
Lol Bona means good in Latin, that's where it comes from
Ok, but 7:21 - 7:28
really good video but i just wanted to point out that g***y is a slur and you should instead use Romani or Roma
