    If you search RUclips for 'Julian and Sandy' you can hear Polari being used quite often in a series of BBC Radio sketches from the 1960s. They're also pretty funny.

  • @FatihaPanjwani
    @FatihaPanjwani 9 лет назад +3

    There's this series of sci-fi books called the Everness series and a lot of the main characters actually speak in polari and at the back of the book there's this whole list of polari words and their meanings which is quite cool. For instance: omi means man/guy, palone means woman/girl and an omi-palone would be an effeminate man or homosexual. One of my favorites is a shush-bag, which is basically a hold-all or backpack.

    • @FatihaPanjwani
      @FatihaPanjwani 9 лет назад

      ***** it does! In the book it's the language used in a London from a parallel world and it's called palari, but at the end of the book it's explained that it finds it roots in seventeenth century London and that it was originally a thieves language

  • @MarkHilton1

    the word bona might come from italian (i'm not sure just guessing).
    i'm italian and bona has two meaning in italian dialects:
    - in the central part of italy it is a rude adjective with which to call and attractive woman
    - in the northern part of italy it means "stop", "that's enough"

    I loved this video because I just discovered Polari (via the BBC, ironically) and I am so fascinated and tickled by it, and I see you are too. My favorite Polari word is probably dolly, which I understand to mean something like lovely or beautiful, and it's my favorite because it reminds me of Dolly Parton.

  • @felicityaeh

    Great video as always, but some of these are wrong. For instance, "bona" is a Latin word meaning good, and kamp/camp was in use way before the 1960s (think about Mein Kampf by Hitler that at the time was translated into My Camp, showing that isn't a new word). But anyway like I said, great video, and thank you for introducing me to this wonderful language!

    • @margogrover2947
      @margogrover2947 9 лет назад +4

      oliverlaurasykes Mein Kampf does not mean "My Camp". It means "My Struggle". While Kampf and kamp are obviously very similar in spelling, they are very different in every other linguistic category.

    • @felicityaeh
      @felicityaeh 9 лет назад +1

      +Hannah Witton +Margo Grover Oops how silly of me, I should have perhaps looked up that about "Mein Kampf" before commenting, and the Italian influences thing completely slipped my mind. Thank you for correcting me, and I'm sorry for calling you out on something you were correct about!

    • @ajoajoajoaj

      Technically in this context it's Italian. Italian is one of the primarily sources of Polari vocabulary though it's been beaten down by being partially filtered through the Lingua Franca pidgin and a thorough anglicization through the generations.

    "doing the dishes" can be used in English to mean a regular or mundane task but it comes from Polari in which "dishes" means "butt", a reference to anal sex as being a vanilla ("boring") sexual activity.

    "When being gay was still illegal" It still is in near enough 80 countries. But I hope in our lifetimes, we can say that statement in its full glory.
    Also found this origin of camp: camp (adj.)
    "tasteless," 1909, homosexual slang, of uncertain origin, perhaps from mid-17c. French camper "to portray, pose" (as in se camper "put oneself in a bold, provocative pose"); (www.etymonline.com/)
