I actually wonder what composers like Beethoven or Mozart would think about the music we have nowadays. Maestro Segerstam seems to be confused.

They'd be appalled by the amount of repetition and lack of musical development in the vast majority of modern entertainment music. After all, most of it is just simple verse and chorus-style songs, sometimes with a solo (e.g. a cadenza) but no development. And while we might be impressed by some rock guitarist shredding a solo it's still not as impressive as the stuff that Beethoven managed in his late piano sonatas or Mozart in his Requiem.
Actually Mozart himself was a highly formulaic composer but his bag of compositional tricks was so big that it's completely irrelevant that he did in fact follow a formula in every single one of his works.
