I somehow stumbled upon this game many-many years after it's release (in about 2007) and I was surprised how clever this was. I played many c64 games when I was a kid but never played this. As an adult I really enjoyed it, it's really well made and was really good fun.
i like how most levels were based on a scene in the movie. that was clever how they used the organ part. and there was a giant squid but they didn't use the scene in the final movie
proud to say i was a goonie completed the game ,but sad to say it used up a chunk of my childhood lol, looking at this it shows that it can be completed in ten minutes lol
I played this game a ton as a kid. My copy was messed up, though. The last level would always glitch out on the graphics and so it was really hard to figure out what was where, but I actually did manage to beat it one time. I was proud to be a Goonie for having made it through that mess! My favorite levels were the Octopus and the Organ. It's disappointing just how short they were, though. Oh well, great memories with this one.
I still remember some of the hints in the instruction booklet. "Mama Fratelli is dirty and mean, money will get you off her scheme. Quence the embers run, run, run, then you'll find your task is done". It was cool they put the solutions in the manual.
There is no goonies 2. There was only one movie. So Games like Goonies 2, 3 or whatever are just jumping on the licensed name. It is like I produce a racing game like Forza and call it Karate Kid 2020. Or a Football Manager game and call it Gremlins.
Well played, I remeber playing this back in the old days, but I never got past the octopussy :-/ I also remember going the movies to see it after playing it, and I was dissapointed that there was no octopussy in the movie (cut) :-(
It's the first time I watched this game. I think one of my friends had it - but he didn't like it. Now I'm perplexed how complicated and well thought it was. And some scenes of it remind me of "Another World" by Eric Chahi and - yes - even "Limbo" (the floating box).
@@eyesauron I played the 800XL version, sounded pretty much the same to me. However I have a C64 version with different music, I also have this version. I guess the Atari did change music in levels. Plays the same I think. Playing this now on the new C64.
I was 2 levels short of the ending then. Thanks for that. I never could get beyond that damn skull screen, mostly due to the bats on the previous level.
The skull screen is the first really nasty one, because of that damn bird's randomness with where it enters. You should die once at most on the bowling ball level if you are careful, cuz the bats won't get released a second time unless you are careless. The organ one is brutal as well, because the water drops are ALSO random, and you can easily get hosed if you aren't EXTREMELY careful. the octopus isn't THAT bad when you know what to do, but it's still challenging, but the last screen is 100% safe.
10:20 That's an interesting glitch to get off the boat and had no idea you could do that! The "proper" solution is to send the taller character back to operate the lift while the shorter character is on it as shown in this video: ruclips.net/video/jFpCt6pDr-g/видео.html
Games have been vastly dumbed down and homogenized on the whole. There are multiple reasons for this. Puzzle games run on any hardware; they’re not graphically intensive; computers tended to have more of them and consoles more immediate, arcadey games. Memory constraints meant the game could not hold your hand; you had to write things down and make maps because the game would not do it for you. Games were made by small groups of people and they made the games they wanted to play. Memory constraints meant that games could not be long; therefor they had to be difficult. AAA is a disaster today; but indie games retain the 90’s spirit of experimentation; mechanical complexity and difficulty. 90% of everything was always shit, but there were amazing things in there; games that uniquely appealed to you but don’t necessarily have mass market appeal, because if you throw enough shit at a wall some of it will stick. That long tail can only be served by small studios that don’t need $500 million back on their investment because the game was made by 12 people. That’s the long tail concept; most people are in that long tail and are very underserved by AAA. AAA is short, easy, commoditized, mediocre games that you just consume like a movie and forget about.
Feels it was like yesterday when I played this with my late childhood friends...30 years ago. I miss those goonies.

Great movie, great game. Takes me back to my childhood. Warm memories.
I like how close this is to the movie. They included so many details - including the octopus from the deleted scenes. :-) Really nice
One of the few games you could play with two players co-op. So much fun!
the c64 sounds always bring me back to my kid years

I remember having the glitched final level as well. Really disappointing. But despite that I played this game quite a bit back in the day.
I would play the heck out of my C64 when I was a kid and the Goonies was one of my favorites. thank you for the nostalgic feelings!
The nostalgia kick i got watching this video... Now, this is a game worth a good remake.
I remember loving this when I was 9-10, spent ages working out the levels with a friend, don't think I ever got past level 5? good times....

this game looks a lot more interesting than Goonies 2 on the NES
NadrianATRS it is

Netreek there is so a Goonies 2 on the NES! I rented it as a kid
Thanks for posting this but now I’m back in therapy from it. Totally triggered my 80’s C64 game PTSD lol

Incredible game for the c64.
goddammit, brings memories back from the 80's
this game was awesome for 2 player co-cop
Probably the only game I never had on the C64...Did see the Great Movie at the Pictures so that makes it Cool Bananas...Earth Soul⚡Blues RocknRoll...
Ahh, memories from the 80's playing this.
It's actually impressive how true to the movie this is.
This game was a nightmare to finish. Usually by the octopus stage that was about it.

8:17, gotta love invisible platform bug
8:42 Giant Octopus!
strange - I distinctly remember I had different music on the first stage back in the day....
Ah, 8-bit Cindi Lauper...
ATARI 800XL has different music tho
The music in this video matches what I had for the C64. I recently noticed that different versions like the Atari had the music swapped on the levels.
@@eyesauron I played the 800XL version, sounded pretty much the same to me. However I have a C64 version with different music, I also have this version.

Playing this now on the new C64.
For some reason, the tape version on the C64 didn't use "The Goonies R good enough", but the disk did.
Goonies was my favourite movie as a kid, but I never understood shit of this game. Nice to see how it progressed. :)
Wow, I did not know that was the last level. How disappointing that I was so close. Argh!

man I remember trying to figure out that last level. Never did get it, in spite of so many hours.
I played the spectrum 48K version.
I never passed the skull level. Never figured out what those eggs were for.
Back in the day I never could figure out that last puzzle.
listening to this - I honestly dont know how anybody sane can argue that SID sound better then POKEY.
Only remember the music, don't think I have ever played this! Too bad, it looks like a lot of fun.
1:53 WTF there is a guy running around taking showers!
Related to the movie scene where the screw with a shower tube.
Cyndi Lauper
Why is the main theme totally different from the one I had on c64?
Hi Mark. Did you play this game on tape or disk? the C64 tape version doesn't have "The Goonies R good enough".
@@radrich4873 it must have been on disk then! thanks for the hint!
@@mbtemlett You're welcome mate!
I was never able to finish this. My copy had some kind of glitch where the mom didn’t jump off the edge after the coins at the end.
You had the Eaglesoft crack, didn't you... :)
@@zaphod77 Is that what the issue was? Makes sense. lol
did i have a bad version of the game or something? i remember the last level having no enemies at all. i remember i was like that's it?
I don't remember a man with a chronic showering obsession in the movie.

That worked? I thought it was intended that you have sloth go back to raise the mast platform to get the other one up there.
that's another way to complete it (i always used sloth for that) 👍
This reminds me of Conan on the Apple IIe
Zorro style!
Hey, that reminded me, where's my pipe?
The creepiest c64 game ever.
Has nothing on the 4th stage of Last Ninja though.
@@Erik-vp5bm What about "Forbidden forest" ?
@@SOULDEZIGNER Not tried that one
@@Erik-vp5bm The dungeon? Yeah that's also gloomy, but that never freaked me out the way this did.
i had msx version its a completly different game ..but it looks better .. this looks more entertaining instead..
Anyone remember Q-Link?
Am I wrong or did more games early on seem to employ more problem solving in them as opposed to gaming as the industry progress?

8:19 looks like cheating.
It probably isn't, but I noticed the same thing and I'm curious how the jump was made.
I thought this game was nuts when I was 9, but in retrospect, it blows.
Just wondering if anyone with a C64 actually paid money for this game :P
very nice puzzle game! too bad the ending is a little lame :( they could at least add some different music to it
Bruce Lee was a million times better imo. Zorro beats this too. But the movie was cool.
Good game, terrible utilization of the SID audio chip. Very basic.
In 1985, this was passable. It was right around this time when all the great European based composers came along.
Atari version has much better sounding music
Atari version sounds worse than C64 version
