      The Guidebook helped me with so many games... Metroid, Zelda, Goonies, Kid Icarus... Nintendo Power as well. Still have them. Some are very worn!
      Can't tell you how much trouble my brother and I got into for calling Redmond WA. multiple times(long distance phone calls, remember those?) for the Nintendo hotline for help before the Guidebook.

    My mom found this at a garage sale back in the late 80s. The label was missing, and someone had written "Goonies 2" on it in it's place. But I played it like crazy and beat it. I passed it on to a friend when I gave them my NES. Truly a classic.

    I mapped this game out on graph paper and marked where all items were.
    No nintento power for me, hand-sketched, color pencil marked - good times.
    And it worked.

    Damn! I've been playing this game since '88 and I never knew you could throw the boomerang in multiple directions! I relied on the Official Nintendo Player's Guide to beat this game back in the day. Hell, I busted it out the last time I played this game on stream because I had completely forgotten where one item was. I have notes written in it from ten-year old me. Present me really appreciates that! Oh man, I have Wai Wai World. It kinda sucks. One thing worth mentioning is to pay attention to which way Mikey is facing in the corner of the first person sections. It's crucial to navigating between the front and back maps, and once you realize this, the game becomes a lot less disorienting. Great video, dude!

    • @GenerationGapGaming
      @GenerationGapGaming  6 лет назад

      Yeah dude I just came about the boomerang thing by accident. I was trying to see if I could throw a bomb while jumping and when I did that combo of buttons in mid air it threw the boomerang in that direction. And it worked for any other direction I tried too. It was cool but I assumed others figured that out too lol. So cool you have your own notes in your guide from when you were a kid. Thanks as always for watching dude. Always enjoy your comments.

    Back in 1988 I committed to playing this game with hopes of actually making it somewhere....played it a few times previously and saw my older brother find a couple Goonies (it was his game). It felt like I played it for the entire day, I remember the feeling of realizing how the maps connected like something clicked and was able to open up the entire world and find all the Goonies and the mermaid. I beat it at the age of 6 and I knew I did something amazing although I never thought it was possible.....it’s not an easy game but definitely one of the best nes games and the music I can still hear til this day

  • @robertmcginty4146
    @robertmcginty4146 5 лет назад +1

    I won this game only bc of the Players Guide, like you said. A few years ago, early in my 40's, I beat this game again start to finish by drawing my own map of action and adventure scenes from scratch. Hooo boy, was that work but rewarding in the end.

    Back in the 80's and early 90's, Pac-Man on Atari is the common tune used in video games scenes/arcades heard in TV shows and movies.

    • @mresturk9336
      @mresturk9336 4 года назад

      How to show a video game in a 1980s/early 1990s movie:
      1 - Use prerecorded footage of your kid playing the game.
      2 - Replace the audio with Atari 2600 sfx no matter what console is being played.
      3 - Have the actor "playing" the game manhandle the controller like a confused monkey.
      Optional - Describe the game in a completely inaccurate manner by spewing out random, "gamer term" gibberish. Even if your film was specifically intended to revolve around video games and marketed to the gamer audience (looking at you 'The Wizard').
      Strangely even a lot of modern movies continue to use this formula....

    This was one of my favorite games as a kind on the NES. I remember picking it out at Children's Palace for my birthday- which actually would have been 31 years ago today, actually! My brother and I were completely hooked on this game back in the day. He got it as a gift one year when I was around 8 years old, and we both tried our hardest to play through the whole thing, but kept hitting roadblocks in our progress. The funniest one (and my favorite memory of the game) revolves around that got-dang CANDLE. Nowhere in the game does it tell you to hit that old woman five times, and we were so fed up with not being able to progress without it that we began systematically going through every room and hitting every corner of the screen with every tool in our arsenal. When we reached that old woman, our patience had completely run out, so we just started hitting her over and over out of sheer frustration. You can imagine our laughter and bewilderment when she spit out the candle.
    That stupid candle-spitting woman made us paranoid about checking every corner of every game we played after that point, for a good number of years. Funny thing is, this actually HELPED us in games like Metal Gear or the Metroid series.

    The reason the sound effects for pacman was used over goonies II in the movie my blue heaven I think is because the pac man sound effects are recognized more easily than goonies. sure we knew visually it was goonies II but not many people would but the pac man sound effects people can instantly recognize.

    Thanks for making this video! As much as I love the game, it always felt too obscure and underrated to me. I'm floored to see that (at the time of this writing) there are over 118,000 views; over 3,000 likes; and over 700 comments! It's astonishing to realize I'm not alone in loving this game.
    When the game does come up in conversation, I'm always surprised to find out how many people had a hard time beating the game. I did have the instruction manual and the wonderful Player's Guide that you mentioned, but even with those things for many other classic games, I never could beat them. But "Goonies II" had just exactly the right learning curve for me, and it was the first game I ever beat, and to this day one of the few I've ever beat. That's why it remains my favorite video game of all time! (I'm glad you beat it now, and I'm sure you beat many, many more games in your childhood than I did. And you beat them without the manual! It's just interesting how different things work for different people.)
    I knew all the strategies but not the trivia. I didn't know about Mikey's appearance in the Wai Wai game, and I had no idea it cameoed in a movie! Re: your question about the Pac-Man sound effects -- only the very earliest games had sounds that no one bothered to copyright, and so are public domain. It doesn't matter what video game from what era, or how sophisticated the game's sound is; you'll always get Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Space Invader noises dubbed into the movie or TV show!
    Thanks again for sharing and allowing us to relive the memories!

    being a young child in the Philippines, we had a vcd player with nes emulator and i found Goonies 2 in the 300-in-1 nes games cd. it was in japanese, so the game gave me a language limitation. i played the game for 3 years always getting stuck on the violet cavern with a large chasm between platforms. it was fun, but i find the limitations frustrating. i left it unfinished for 6 years.
    then, we bought a new dvd player with a usb reader. i finally downloaded a nes rom of Goonies 2 in english and everything made sense after that. after two hours, i finally finished the game.
    what an underrated game! i replay this game once every two years just for nostalgia.

    Just had to watch the Goonies 'R' Good enough videos (yes, there are two, or rather two parts!) after this. So much talent in those videos including several wrestlers, the Goonies themselves, and even the Bangles before they were well known- apparently Cyndi Lauper's opening act at the time. A comment in the second video mentions one of the wrestlers at the end trying to get into a car (to make an escape)- that car was not part of the act but a surprised bystander- lol!
    To the game, I remember it and played it a few times but never got really far. Like G^3, I also remember being surprised at the first game showing up in a Playchoice-10 machine.
    Finally, not having watched too many videos here, I did not know about "mullet boy"- I was just like, "WTH is that photoshopped head doing in that flyer(?) artwork??" :D

    When I played this as a kid I found every item and every kid but one! I could never find him and finally beat the game with a game genie code. I remember going straight to Annie, opening the cage, and being completely unsatisfied at the ending. It really is much more gratifying to beat the game using skill and not cheating. I may have to follow your suggestion and use the players guide to finally get that feeling of satisfaction. Thanks for sharing your video. :)

    The way the agent in that film is holding the controller is not that far off from how old school arcade players would play on console. My dad glued a nes controller down to play Galaga on the nes when I was a kid.

    The Nintendo Players guide was a must have back in the day. It was like $25 back then which was expensive as a kid but worth it. You kept it until the pages were falling apart. Helped me beat Goonies II and Rygar (also had awesome music). Nice video!

    At 4:00 I have a bit of an explanation for the SFX. For some reason the only videogame SFX an engineer is allowed to use is those from atari's port of Pac Man. I'm no expert but I think 2600 Pac Man and Donkey Kong SFX are part of a royalty free SFX library.
    Also, when I was a kid our local arcade had a standalone Goonies machine. Not a Play 10 machine, an actual cabinet dedicated to Goonies. It was one of the mini machines Nintendo put out. We had one for Duck Hunt/Hogan's Alley and the one opposite it was for Goonies. It was always fun watching the older kids play since they had the money to commit to finishing it. If you can find it, play the game in emulation. It's a lot of fun and really deep for an arcade game.

    This is a personal thing, but I truly appreciate your extra bit of information including the other available Goonies games. I played a game at my grandmothers house almost 30 years ago, that I could never remember the name of, and have been trying to remember for many years. Since I was very young when I played it I also had no idea what game system I was playing on. Turns out that it was Goonies on the Commodore 64! Now I can track it down and play it again, all thanks to you! Thank you!

    Goonies 1 was also released as a stand-alone arcade cabinet, so you could play it without worrying about the timer expiring because you paid for individual game credits instead of time (though I think you take more damage from enemies in that version than in the other versions, probably as a means of raking in more money because you were paying for credits instead of time so people could just pop in a few quarters and beat the game on only 1 or 2 credits if they’re good enough).

    I owned this game on my NES, but I never understood it as a kid, because I got a lot of my NES games second-hand from a family member that owned a rental store, so I never had a manual. I had also never seen the Goonies movie, so the only nostalgia I have for this game is that it's a super difficult game about a movie I'd never seen- and I assumed the same as you, that it was a sequel to the movie.
    Fantastic video by the way! It definitely shed some light on a mysterious game from my childhood that I'd always wondered about!!

    Oh WOW, I TOTALLY forgot about the computer version of this game until I just watched this Tyler. I played that thing for hours on a Commadore 64 that my older cousins had I think, it's been a while and I was like 7 or 8... Shows my age haha, love seeing videos like this that bring back old memories. We used to frequent Daytona Beach every summer as a family vacation, and all the arcades there had the Playchoice-10\Famicom Goonies, which I dumped at least 1000 quarters into since first discovering it. I've played all the games in this video and loved them all, great job on this man!

    My "Goonies II" would have to be either Wizards and Warriors or Mega Man 1. I used to rent those games quite a bit growing up, but never owned them as a kid. It wouldn't be until many years later when I would purchase the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and a copy of Wizards and Warriors where I would finally have my own versions of those games.
    Although, I do remember renting Goonies II several times as a kid as well. I never made it far in the game, because I didn't know what to do most of the time, but I never stopped trying.
