My mom liked the music :) I remember that she played herself a few times. She failed miserably, but at least she tried :) She also loved playing Davids Midnight Magic with me. Now, since my mom is gone, those are one of my dearest memories of her. ,
This game, at the time it came out for Atari 2600, was way, way, WAY ahead of its time. Checkpoint saves long before they were commonplace, full-length background music long before it was common on home consoles, complex map with navigation puzzles and secret areas at a time when most game maps were mundane.
I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks now. so I came back and rewatched this whole longplay hoping to "get it out of my system" so to speak. And.... still there! LOL
All in all, a legendary game. It had such a brilliant atmosphere. But no wonder I only ever got as far as I did, how the hell are you supposed to know that you're meant to stand on a certain spot and wait there for a balloon to arrive?! I'm glad I never completed it, the ending is so pants that I don't think I'd have even realised I'd completed it. I know for a fact that I'd have just assumed the game had crashed. That's not a just reward for the effort.
The Atari 2600 version was noted for having an extra 2k of memory in addition to the standard 8k ROM. David Crane created the former as the 'Display Processor Chip' and hoped to use it in other games, but the Great Video Game Crash of 1984 kept that from ever happening.
Loved this game. The Atari 2600 version was some kind of oddity in home gaming, how well it turned out vs something like this. The best version, however was the Atari 8-bit/5200 version which in addition to all this cool stuff had an entire second world and ending sequence. It was so tough for me to beat, but it blew my mind when I did :D
It's unbelievable that C64 version has better sound than the Arcade. Loved that game and the "mystery" it created (at least in my early teen years). Also, how unique the scoring/live system was.
It probably wasn't the first to have it - I have no idea - but this was the first game I encountered where music shifted based on in-game events, from "laid back" (general tune) to "happy/frantic" (you got a treasure) to minor key (you died). It really added to the experience for me.
Load"*",8,1. You got it bang on, some games were just ,8 for some reason. I had Beach Head 2 on disk and it was ,8,1 Those were the best computing days ever because it was all new in those days, computers in homes. I'm now getting back into playing my old Commodore 64, and havent touched the PS3 or PC for months!
I think this was the first game (for me at least) that had changing music. And also one of the first games I actually finished. Nice vid! I recently picked up a C64 on a flee market, and as soon as the attic is in any shape I'm ready to dive into the 80's once more!
Had to do some searching to find this. I had the song stuck in my head for some reason. Probably haven’t heard it in 30 years but remember playing it on the C64 when I was a kid. :)
In the '80s there were no manuals and C64 games were copied onto floppy disks among friends, so it took me a long time to discover the purpose of the game. At least in the version I played it was not necessary to collect the gold bars to "win"
Game info: Join Pitfall Harry as he searches a vast subterranean cliff dwelling high in the Andes. He's looking for the fabled Raj Diamond, gold bricks, his niece Rhonda and the cowardly lion Quickclaw. He finds more then i bargained for - eels, poisonous frogs, albino scorpions, bats, condors, a raging river - in the greatest challenge of his career!
Activision made many classic video games and Pitfall II is one of these classics. I still remember theme song of this game and I remember how we played this few months without pauses. a piece of my childhood..
I had this game over thirty years ago and never ever worked out how to save Rhonda or find the Raj Diamond (never mind the stone-age rat or Quickclaw- for all I remembered their names- or in which order!)... until now! Thanks.
For some reason Pitfall 2 has this creepy, otherworldly vibe along the lines of Impossible Mission. A mysterious example of the 'less is more' phenomenon with regard to narrative impact, if that makes sense.
I think other games show SID off better this sounds like the same as the Atari version except underwater and minus percussion, Ghostbusters is a great game too
I never did figure out the animal that gets rescued. Was it suposed to be a coyote? Bad thing about the C64 was the load time....some games you could go have a beer before it loaded lol!!! I knew a person that had a device that either overclocked the system or was extra memory that cut the load time in half!!! It was called JetLoad, it plugged in to the left- back of the C64. Funny thing it is, I googled it & there is no information about it, but if you google c64 fast loader wiki comes back.
Whaaaaat? How in the hell was a 7 year old kid supposed to know about that balloon? I pumped hours into this one only to shelve it because I had no idea. Sheeze Louise.
+GamePlayins One of the worse games ever. Monotonous. I remember finally getting to the end but it took me forever. The hype and the marketing and first screen got me to play it. I don't know why I kept playing it.
There is a game call pitfall 3 aka Orpheus in the Underworld [1989]. Can't find a single video on the internet or youtube of it. Found just a few screenshots.
On the 2600 version of the game I used to just turn the console off and on again REALLY quick and it would glitch and start you off the level below the starting point. You'd just walk left and win. I've tried this with my "new" 2600's and I can't get it to work anymore... I don't remember the exact version I had BITD.
Funny you would mention this. I encountered a similar glitch in the original Pitfall on the 2600. Same as your's, quick off and on repeatedly until the glitch happened. But with the original Pitfall Harry would be floating in the upper left hand corner of the screen. And as long as you didn't press the button, you could just float from screen to screen using the stick. It screwed around with the levels a bit too. It was pretty consistently too. If you were able to lock in the glitch, it pretty much handled the same every time. The reason I said it was funny is that nobody ever remembers this glitch except for me. I even mentioned it in person to David Crane, the games author, and he said he never heard of it. Your glitch is the sequel game, but it has the same basic feel, and it's the first time I ever remember anyone saying they used the ON/OFF power glitch.
yes! me neither, I've been searching for this game for ages... couldn't find ANY info on it, then eventually I heard it was also titled pitfall 3... have seen some screenshots but they are nothing like what the game I remember playing!
The original music came from the Pitfall cartoon series. It aired after the first Pitfall released and David Crane borrowed the music from the cartoon for Pitfall 2. It sounds a little different with real musical instruments of course. Assuming you are still around. Your post is 9 years old as of this writing.
i think this version could've done a little better, i mean it's still a good version but if you look at the atari 2600 version the music has a little more beat & it has a sky that looks like a sun either going or down.
The Atari 2600 version had a lot of extra graphic and sound hardware in the cartridge. It was basically the Atari version of the SNES Super FX chip. Although the Atari computer versions had the same music as the 2600.
I love this game, however i only have it on one system, The Original Atari, but mines dosent work. i quite like the more peaceful sound on the Commodore, but all versions are great ports of the Original Atari Edition, but The Spectrum is the exception to the good ports of this Game. It Sucks.
I don't understand. my memory of this game is that it had epic graphics. Either my memory has been distorted by the passage of time or far more likely, this video is a fake.
So was the Atari 800 version. I'm not necessarily saying this is "bad" but it just lacks a lot of the ooooomph that the Atari version had, especially musically, which was extremely disappointing because of how good the SID chip was. But then again, nobody really utilized the SID chip to the max until Rob Hubbard and then Martin Galway came along.
Martin Galway's music on the c64 is awesome. Who can forget the legendary Ocean Loader, or the excellent Comic Bakery theme, just to name a few? Jonathan Dunn was pretty good too.
The sound of that SID chip is so smooth, it’s like honey to my ears.
That could possibly cause an infection.

Hey this is one of the games that really made the sid chip stand out for the c64
Terrific game, haunting music.
I was a young kid when that was new, and never got past the early screens, but still loved the game.
me too. I remember dying and floating back to the start over and over again
This game, at the time it came out for Atari 2600, was way, way, WAY ahead of its time. +Appetite4 Barbarian (Psygnosis) was ahead of its time. Check it out.
@@krugerm1barbarian is a clunky mess. I'd argue it was really kind of behind the times with how poorly made that game was.
@@handwriting8804actually it wasn’t. There was no other game with those type of graphics or in depth storyline. It was ahead of its time.
I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks now. so I came back and rewatched this whole longplay hoping to "get it out of my system" so to speak. And.... still there! LOL
This was one of my favorite games on the C-64, and I still really love it :D
I love this awesome masterpiece!
Oh, how much I loved this game. I even draw a complete map to it (wish I'd still have it). I remember finishing it once with only one loss of live.
Wow seems like yesterday. Nice memories. Thanks for the long play:)
i played this game so long... and never understood what to do or what the goal is when i was young ^^

The balloons are in the manual
