      Not to take anything away from his learnings, because he has managed to pick up the game far quicker than any of the friends I've helped - but I assume that his prior experience with the VTOL VR game helped. Although not at the same level of complexity, it should still give some kind of framework and basic knowledge in many fields. A framework which you could then build on and help expand with your experience.

    "Just an AI" dude the AI in DCS is no joke lol

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 5 лет назад +63

      DCS AI are interesting. On the one hand, in terms of tactics they are total boobs with the intelligence of a calculator. In a plane that sticks out its chest and smashes people (Eagle, Tomcat, etc) it's not tooo hard to pin them against the ropes and make them an offer they can't refuse. But if you're in a plane that relies heavily on stealth and deception (Mirage, Flanker, etc) then you quickly discover that the AI have Godlike omniscience. Hiding behind a mountain? They see you. Firing a silent heatseeker into their blind spot? They react instantly.
      I like to think I'm pretty good in the Mirage. Online I can deceive F-14 pilots all day. I play them like the Raptors in Jurassic Park (you're looking forward, but the attack comes from the side). Against the AI that kind of crap doesn't work. He will see you, and Just. Keep. Coming. Very different experience.

    As someone who has flown combat flight simulators since 3 years old (idk if Finest Hour on a 386 counts as a simulator) there is something about it. I remember my first conscious memory of it. “Rowans Battle of Britain” I swung in behind a JU88. I placed my gunsight on his left engine. And fired. Smoke... then fire. And down he went. I was six years old. And there it was. An air to air kill in simulator mode “realistic controls”. It doesn’t matter if it’s an AI. Your first victory on full simulator difficulty in a “real” environment is something special you never forget.

    For anyone getting into DCS or considering it, especially due to the price, the community is amazing and there is PLENTY of discord channels, that will welcome you into their wing and show you how to operate your module (aircraft). The DCS community is seriously amazing and you will never have a problem finding help or training, especially from a squadron actively searching for new players, so they can train them the way they want to fill roles they require! Yes, the sim is challenging, but very REWARDING! There is nothing like getting your first air kill or landing a bullseye with a dumb bomb. Most realistic sim out there, especially in VR (very demanding hardware)!

    Yessss! Come fly with us at the 162nd. I’d love to fly with my favorite mil sim content creator.
    Love the video, glad you’ve gotten to experience DCS as the freedom delivery simulator that it is. You need the F14 Tomcat though. It’s made out of testosterone & bald eagles and soaks seats everywhere it goes.

      @@jeepaholic326 It has improved a LOT since then. No more 8G airframe failures. Unless you fly it like an absolute orangutan, you'll black out as the pilot long before you rip the wings off these days. Most of my deaths in the Tomcat are a result of unconscious impact with terrain.

    Having followed your brothers on their channels, I never really followed you since you played games I never messed with. Matt, or Mark, usually kept us up with you so that was all I really needed. Now, though, you have ventured into my area by entering into the flight sim world. You are entering in to a rabbit hole that you may not get out. Poor Doc Lee will not recognize his baby boy before long now. Tread lightly young one, flight simming is not for the faint of heart, nor the light of coin for that matter. :D Glad to see you here young Drew, enjoy, but try your hardest not to get sucked down into that rabbit hole.

    you did amazing for a newbie. Don't belittle your first kill. It is a great achievement. AI or player doesn't matter. It's all about achieving objectives which you did by protecting that bomber. I also think you absorbed more from ralfidude than you yourself know. I noticed when you encountered that enemy F-18, as soon as you took your shot you were immediately cranking to the side in probable anticipation for him firing back at you.

    First ever PvP player kill was the single most thrilling and satisfying thing I've ever done in a video game, especially since it was my Mirage M2000-C that I spent weeks flying in training servers and pve servers, but all that work paid off when I put down an F-15 Eagle, a FAR superior plane to a mirage lol. Can't wait to see some more DCS content drewski, and working with ralphi is gonna give you the best edge you can get.

    Welcome to the DCS community!
    As you expand and grow into further planes, I'd like to recommend the F-14 Tomcat and the Mirage 2000C.
    The Tomcat is a beast. It's big, fast, shoots huge missiles from one side of a small country to the other, and does not hold your hand. It's a vintage muscle car with wings. If you make a mistake, GROUND. You will become a better pilot by getting good in the Cat. It will grow hair on your chest, and your upper lip. Also, no shit, it has a CASSETTE PLAYER and its own album of Top Gun-inspired original music written for DCS.
    The Mirage is the polar opposite. It's a slick little plane with highly augmented controls, but without the heavy artillery. To get kills in the Mirage, you've got to out-smart your enemies. Hide from them, deceive them, get close. A successful Mirage pilot brings a knife to a gun fight, and wins. Learning this plane will sharpen your evasion and situational awareness skills to a razor edge.
    In my opinion, the F-18 flies like a cement truck compared to these two planes. I never really liked the 18.

    Fantastic video. Only thing I'd like to mention, at 11:30 "F18's don't land on their rear wheels first." This isn't always the case. The f18's gear is designed with high tolerance for landing on carriers, but if you watch non-carier landings, pilots will often flair off the aircraft, and land on the rear wheels well before the nose gear.
