  • Celebrating the discography of ZZ Top. Let's talk about everything from "ZZ Top's First Album" to "La Futura" and what about those 80's remixes? Why are there two different covers for "Greatest Hits"? And the BIG question... How? How? How? How?

Deguello was the name of a song Santa Anna would play before his troops went into battle during the battle for Texas independence. That album was my intro to the band. All the 70s albums are essential for rock fans. The Texas power trio! They were a really tight band even live.

I never heard 1 song by ZZ Top when I saw them in concert in March 1975. Best concert I've seen in my life! Bought ZZ Top 1st album after that. Fandango album came out summer of '75 with single 'Tush' busting them wide open. Every concert after never equalled that first concert.

Robert, I became aware of the ZZ Top six pack back when I was in Tallahasse, FL. I was going to Florida State University and I was at a record/cd store. I thought those mixes were the original mixes put on cds for the purists. That is what I think those are. I became aware of the new mixes when I noticed how the drums LEAPED on La Grange. I was like WHAAAAT? I don't remember the drums being like this. This was when I knew something had changed. Fortunately I have the new cd remasters with bonus tracks AND I have the Six Pack. I never cared for this because they would put two albums on one cd.

I just got my first, well first since the 1980s anyway, ZZ Top LP over the weekend (today is Monday). I got the Tres Hombres remaster and it sounds great.
I watched the ZZ Top documentary that was made before Dusty Hill passed away. I watched it about 3 weeks ago and I really wanted to hear, and not on some of the poorer sound and bootlegs, some of their music from before the Eliminator or "Legs" album. I never really cared as much for the 1981 on forward ZZ Top but I love their old, beginnings, LPs! Eliminator had some great tracks but that was probably when I quit paying as much attention to them with the overkill playing of those videos on MTV. I just don't have them on LP now so I've started getting them with Tres Hombres remaster being the first over the weekend. It sounds great too. I've got a few of the earlier releases on CD and all of them on FLAC files. But I want them on LP so that's what I'm working on.
By the way, they did come out with good songs on just about every album they put out even past 1981. But I just enjoyed their music a lot more before that pop tinge found its way into their music. Anyhow...
Haha, I figured I'd finish watching your video before commenting or hitting send. I never did get the Six Pack release and it sounds like I got lucky on that one.
I'll always remember the Pearl Necklace, "can't be played on radio", controversy back in the '80s. Yet they played it on the radio quite often.

Great video, great band! I remember way back when, the first time I walked into a local store that was only selling compact discs the owner tried his best to get me to buy that "Six Pack" set. I didn't. But I do have some good ones covered here

Sadly another great band (probably) coming to it's end. Excellent insight Robert! I really didn't know too much about this band except for the same old 4-5 tunes that are always on the radio. I might go out and explore a little more because of your video! Thank you, sir!

I used to have the original pressing of Eliminator. It had the original album mix of Legs, plus at the end you hear this lock groove going, HAVE MERCY! (click) HAVE MERCY! (click) HAVE MERCY! I had to give it way cause I was moving in to a small house. I found it at Disk Replay. It's a store that has movies, video games, and vinyl, new and used. I found another copy of that album but it had the single mix of Legs. And I don't know if it has that lock groove. The movie that song is on is Back To The Future Part 3.

Haha, ZZ Top.. Gotta love em!
Their early albums are killer.. Essential 70's rock. 😎
I just heard there will be a new album out this year too.. Dusty got all his parts recorded before he departed for the great gig in the sky, so I think I'll pick it up! 👍

I'm just a few years older than you, but grew up in Texas, so I was very familiar with them when Eliminator came out. It was actually pretty well received by existing ZZ Top fans, here anyway. Afterburner is the one I remember that made everyone go "What the fuck...?"

I bought this album, didn't like the cover and ignored it for years. I finally listened to it and enjoyed it a lot. It's an album that people STILL TO THIS DAY dismiss and IGNORE. It has a LOT t offer. I think the new label and the cover turn people off. To me XXX meant 30 years, so I got it and understood. I was just looking for SOMETHING that wasn't like Afterburner, Recycler and Eliminator. Rhythmeen was a start but was a disjointed album. XXX is like half of an album and it was like Fandango. It was like, this is all we have boys and girls so now here is some live music for ya.
As far as I know, Beatbox was the same thing as a BOOM BOX, a radio or CD/Cassette player. Crucifix A Flat was very clever. Buying a bottle of salvation to fix your tire. Just like your SOUL needs Jesus, your tire needs to be SAVED as well. Dreadmonboogaloo features the phrase "West of the Rockies" which came from the late night, actually well after midnight George Norry:

I'm a bit annoyed that "Stages" isn't on the Greatest Hits album that I have, as well as those 2 dodgy remixes. Buying the "50" now, before I get onto the whole catalogue. Excellent video, really informative, thank you👍RIP Billy🙏

The fist two albums are the best ones IMHO but they sold the least ironically.. Tres Hombres the next fav ..The first three albums are the true ZZ Top to me ,the rest of the 70s is super enjoyable and the 80s is also and on out it is good but like Aerosmith ,the 70s is the best ..

I saw ZZ Top on the Eliminator tour, the only time I saw the band live. They wore that album out on MTV. These days I only want to hear a couple of songs from that album like Thug, or Under Pressure. TV Dinners is also a different sound on this album. I just can't stand hearing Legs on the radio. I have to turn it off. I don't want to hear the album because of that one song.
Tejas is the Spanish spelling of a Caddo word taysha, which means "friend" or "ally". In the 17th century the Spanish knew the westernmost Caddo peoples as "the great kingdom of Tejas" and the name lived on to become the name of the 28th state of the United States-Texas.
Arrested for Driving While Blind may be fun and not politically correct but it was actually a WARNING as well because "Jack Black is/was right by your side." Jack Black was probably death. That noted, this was the only warning in the song, other than you might get arrested. So yeah, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MAD) and so on are not fans of this song.
