I think they’ve been a romance for even longer. If I remember correctly around the time of the djinn when they first get together Pavetta wasn’t even born (although I could be misremembering it’s been a while since I read the last wish). Pavetta gives birth to Ciri around age 15 or 16 and she’s in her 20’s in Witcher 3. So potentially 40+ years. And considering we don’t know how long before Pavetta the Djinn incident happened it could be 60+.
Well, she wanted to know. Even makes a sny remark that Geralt should've been careful what he wished for during this quest. Now she gets to eat her own words.
I think blood and wine dlc should let you end up eith shani(by far the best option imo) since all the gripes that made her decline are gone(steady home,income,no danger and a job for shani)

Currently in Blood & Wine with the main game and Hearts of Stone done and I do miss the other characters from the main game. Your love interest stays with you eventually in Blood & Wine and you can talk to Dandelion in Novigrad still lol. But that’s about it. I’m not even sure if Zoltan is still there. I forget.
Bullshit. Triss and Gerald had much, much more history together: witcher 1, witcher 2. Only in the 3rd game this arrogant chicks appears from nowhere and Geralds starts to wiggle his tail, completely forgetting about his favourite redhead..

If I remember correctly Yen only sleept with someone else because Geralt refused to say he loved her and wanted to be with her in any other way than sexual, then she found someone who said he loved her and wanted to be with her. It's only after Geralt learns of that he realizes he wants her.
Uhh well in the books she frequently fucks other men. At one point she's with this mage, Istredd, and she often jumps from bed to bed between him and Geralt. Istredd wants her to stay with him, and he says he doesn't mind her ''stray lovers'', just that he doesn't want her to be committed to anyone else, so yeah it's clearly implied she just bangs randoms now and again.

I had to do this on my first playthrough (after already choosing Triss)... Felt so terrible that I felt obliged to play the game again in order to correct my mistake.
The thing about this scene for me is I like Yen, I really do (in the books as well), but I also like Geralt not being treated like a dog And also, in my personal prefect ending Geralt's just retired and is chilling in Toussant and drinking wine in the cemetery with Regis like a true emo boy he is, so yeah

Both the games and books make it really rather clear that Ciri doesn't care that much about Yen. Pretty much anyone who isn't attracted to her doesn't care about Yen, for good reason.

To anyone who reads this, Yennefer reminds me of some women I've dated. Bossy, controlling, etc. They have their moments of sweetness and passion, but the constant bickering gets real old real fast. After a while of dealing with that, unless you're a glutton for punishment, you start to ask yourself: "What the hell am I doing here?" Do yourself a favor, if the girl you're with, and of course any relationship is gonna have its quarrels, but if you're constantly fighting all day every day, especially if she is the type who thinks the louder she gets the more right she is, that's the type you need to avoid or break up with. Otherwise you're looking at a long road of misery.

He loved her before making the wish. That's why he made the wish to begin with. She just wanted to know if she truly loved him. It's her fault for not just accepting it and being happy with it. Now the Djinn granted her wish in a Djinn fashion. Removed Geralt's love for her but kept her own. She's screwed now.

well it was not Geralts fault that Yen insisted on taming the first djinn. actually he warned her not to do it - she proceeded to do it and got almost killed. Geralt basically sacrificed their free wills in order to save her life because she didn´t care about warnings and wrongly thought she is almighty.

I love this scene. It manages to make me feel awful for breaking up with Yennefer, a character I had no interest in earlier. That’s a testament to the quality of CDPR’s writing and animation, as well as the voice acting.
I hate Yennefer and this scene makes me feel sad for her yet is gives me an evil satisfaction. Finally telling her off after Geralt obeys her so much earlier

She is the boring type of person that, when you see she is using you, you just want to follow your own way. Triss: Insecure (books), kind, brave and discret manipulator. She don't complain and show the love to people se does love, but she can use you such as Yen (TW1 and TW2). She is the type of person who you enjoys spending time with, even after discovering she used you for some thing of her own wish.
I choose to break up with her because I did not like her from the start (maybe because I do not like to be treated like that, especially by the woman who is supposed to be in love with you). It made sense to me that I would endure such a relationship only because I was forced into it by magical bonds. So it felt right for me to break it off, moreover, she tasted her own fruit - she damn wanted to know "her true feelings".
The only sane comment here. Imagine having a girlfriend like that irl, I'll be pulling my hair out because I can't seem to please or and be treated like a dog essentially. It made sense to show her hey we're not bound anymore, after all that's what she wanted.

To go with Yen over Triss was the hardest choice I've ever made. I've played the games from witcher 1 and 2 and sided with Triss..hell I let the north Burn for the woman..but kept hearing all this reference to Yen...actually interacting with her in three and getting context that "Yeah..Triss has been using the whole amnesia thing to her advantage." thing I ultimately sided with Yen. I was sweet to Triss, friendly as I can be and defended her but I ultimately left her. All those moments that sparked those feelings with her interaction before but I let Triss go in the end. Broke my heart to see it, but felt it was right thing to do. Yen on the other hand..took me a bit to warm up to her..but it oddly enough made sense why Geralt would want a woman like this in his life. He's a man who's stared down some of the most terrible horrors in his world, survived monster and man alike..he would want a powerful woman who wouldn't take his snarky shit and to keep up with him...but that's just me.
Yeah Geralt would choose Yen... But Geralt is not the one choosing YOU ARE. Its more about who you prefer not who would Geralt choose. Many people are trying to say that in books Triss betrayed Geralt and such but that was in the books that isn't in the game and come on I think Geralt would forgive Triss. after 12 years of gaming, this was the first quest ever that made me sweat so hard. to kill the djinn took me like 30 minutes where i died 90 times and after yenns question i was so scared to click accidentaly on ,break up' because then i'd have to do this cursed quest again 😂 #teamyen

I am only here for the plot, the story, the characters themselves, but not the relationships of Geralt and [random female name].
I find redheads and raven-haired equally appealing. But a raven-haired, mysterious, witty, and a strong-willed woman? Fuck yes. Although generally speaking, Yen does have a bitch-mongering side of her, I feel like she feels more interesting overall than Triss. Triss feels too nice to be true, and the interactions between Geralt and Yen (dialogue choices) feels more intimate and shows some closer bond compared to Triss'.
The first playthrough i romanced Yen.So the second one i went for Triss but when i got to this scene i felt so bad for Yen, that the whole romance thingie with Triss just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Tariq DB If you feel bad just remember: At one point she was screwing a mage and Geralt, she let Geralt get taken by Triss and did nothing to get him back. I picked Yen first time around too but I think my second playthrough but next time I'm taking Triss. Yen has done some good things by Geralt too though so either of them is a decent choice.

Triss wants Geralt. Yennefer NEEDS Geralt. I played through Witcher 3 multiple times now. The first time I chose Yennefer. While I found her frustatingly taunting at times, I couldn't help but admire her. There is obviously loads of story and feelings among them, and despite their frequent clashes they obviously care deeply for each other, so in the end I was happy with my choice. Second playthrough I picked Triss, who seems to be a better fit for Geralt, at least on the surface. She is a calm, tender and empathic soul, just what someone like Geralt should need, as he is rough, aggresive and "without emotions" (even though he obviously have loads of those). I felt as if Triss also needed Geralt a lot more than Yennefer does, as she seems much more vulnerable than Yennefer, who is often hostile and can be very hard to like. However, during my Triss playthrough, I reached this particular quest and turned Yennefer down. The truth dawned on me as I watched her reaction: Yennefer needs Geralt much more than Triss ever will. Triss is more vulnerable on the surface, but she will make it just fine without Geralt, because she is likeable and makes friends without much hassle. Yennefer on the other hand, has raised up massive walls around her heart, and almost never allows anyone inside. She has no real friends or family, other than Geralt and Ciri. Taking that from her leaves her an empty shell. There will be virtually no chance of anyone every being let inside her heart ever again, dooming her to remain alone for the rest of her life, even though she has plenty of love and care to give. Needless to say, playing through the game with Triss as my chosen partner, was torture after that point. For all my future playthroughs, Yennefer is the only one for me. She doesn't say it out loud, because words could never describe how much she loves and needs Geralt in her life. Team Yennefer forever.

Yes you've hit the nail on the head! That's exactly how i feel about their dynamic as well. Triss will have no problems finding friends and living a full life in Kovir, but life would just be a lot different for Yennefer who's just lost her best and only shot at finding love. Another thing I would add, not sure if you'd agree,is that Geralt doesnt really fancy too much peace - otherwise he wouldnt willingly have chosen the Path (even when offered the role of a court witcher). Life with Triss would be too peaceful, whereas life with Yen would be a new adventure everyday. Personally i prefer Triss, but Yen just suits Geralt more.
People who stay that Geralt and Yennefer should stay together citing what happens in the books are forgetting/ignoring one important thing. What happens in the games isn't canonical. Therefore, those berating other people for not making that choice need to stop it and just get a grip. Nothing wrong with freedom of choice.

ecletctica1 The games aren't a canon continuation of the books, but the books are absolutely canon to the games. The first game begins pretty much right after Geralt's most recent story ends. The games are extremely well-told fanfiction, but they aren't how Andrzej Sapkowski thinks the series should be concluded, and will write future installments completely independent of them. However, in the context of the games' stories the books are absolutely a direct prequel to them. If you were to walk up to video game Geralt and ask him about an event that occurred in the books, he'd say "yeah, I remember that." But if you were to walk up to an Oracle in the books, and bring up the events of the games, she would say "What? No, that doesn't happen."
Yeah, but going with Tries completely shatters the family dynamic between Yennefer (mother), Ciri (daughter), and Geralt (father). In the words of Philippa Eilhart, Triss is basically the big sister of Ciri.
Cazzomoto the family thing should never be a deciding reason to stay with Yen, if two parents don’t love each other they shouldn’t stay together just for the child’s sake, that’s worse for everyone involved, in my play through Yen can still be seen as Ciris mother figure and Geralt as her father figure but I still didn’t want to be Yen in the end, She can still have both around as parental figures but they don’t have to be together for that. I ended up with Triss cause that’s who my Gerald loved and wanted to be with.
Took me a while, but I realized, with Yen, the fact that she's seemingly always cranky is due to the fact that the world has had her on the back foot most of the time; until the Wild Hunt is defeated, she's in Mama Bear Mode and NOTHING is going to stop her from saving her little girl. She has little concern for the feelings of others because they don't matter. Ciri matters. NOTHING else. In Touissant, she turns into a complete goober once things are settled. You FINALLY get to see her with her guard down and she's truly amazing.
Thats why I love Yen ... I wish to see Yen X Geralt more man ... I want them to have their own child after finding some sort of treatment for infertility or some sort of shit. I am not satisfied with the current ending in Blood and Wine. CDPR is so cruel to Yen. Scenes with her is less than scenes with Triss.
I like Yennefer and have nothing against her, but I had to break it up. It just feels so awkward to me on the scenes where Geralt is flirting with her and I hate the fact that someone as badass as Geralt is tied to her and constantly following her like some poor puppy. And in the end, I like the story of irony on what Yen's actions bring. It makes for a much more thoughtful conclusion, that sometimes finding the hard truth may not be worth it and keeping the status quo is best. Much better than some Disney type love story.

I still chose Triss. Yen was a strong character and all but I disliked a lot of aspects of her personality...everything had to be her way and often made decisions without involving Geralt. Triss was better for him imo.

I chose Triss in my play through for a number of reasons. First is because I played Witcher 1 and 2 and I have spent alot more time around her than Yen; and I gotta say, though it was selfish for her to not want Geralt to get his memories back and she did take advantage of his amnesia, she did so out of desperation for love, not out of ill intention. Second is because Yen has the capacity to be an overbearing spiteful bitch who has a tendency to treat Geralt like shit for no reason. Dont get me wrong, I can see the appeal of Yennefer, and I know she is the canon romance for the Witcher, just based on my experience with the game I like Triss more. Maybe my opinion would change if I read the books.

Your opinion will definitely change once you've read the books. Everything you accuse Yennefer of is actually what Triss is like in the books. I knew Yennefer was the one for Geralt when I finished reading the book where Yennefer becomes a mother to Ciri. She's far more than what the games portray her as.
I love how surprised she is when he dumps her. The moment she questioned the D'jinn wish and what she thinks are her feelings towards him. That's the moment when most people realized maybe they shouldn't be on that relationship and a lot of times they share that thought with their partner. Then some hardship comes and they realized: "Oh!, I do really love him/her, I wanna stay with that person", but life ain't a Hollywood movie, when you say that to someone like Geralt (cuz you see in his animation and voice that he really loves Yen), 9/10 you'll break their hearts and they're the ones that will go on with the breakup. You can have your doubts but the moment you openly shared them with your partner, that's the moment they become certainties and if you seem certain you aren't interested anymore, a lot of people will simply accept your decision out of the love they have for them. If life treats you fair, they may comeback together, if not, well get ready to wonder what would've been life with that person.
milovarquiel I’ve been through exactly what you describe here. My gf of 5 years left and I moved on quickly so I wouldn’t be so hurt any more and a few months later she wanted me back. Difference was that there was no djinn curse in the first place. If there had been I would’ve been pretty curious too.
You know what, it's been a while since I last played the game and this one of only a couple of scenes that I still think about. I'm amazed at how real this scene seemed. It's at the conjunction of great writing, great acting, and great animation, and they were truly able to make a break up in a game feel like a break up. This is one of the best parts of the game, and not for some creepy schadenfreude reason either. It's because they were somehow able to show the depths of human emotion onscreen, and evoke real empathy from the player, both qualities are lacking in many games.

Currently in Blood & Wine with the main game and Hearts of Stone done and I do miss the other characters from the main game. Your love interest stays with you eventually in Blood & Wine and you can talk to Dandelion in Novigrad still lol. But that’s about it. I’m not even sure if Zoltan is still there. I forget.

Istredd wants her to stay with him, and he says he doesn't mind her ''stray lovers'', just that he doesn't want her to be committed to anyone else, so yeah it's clearly implied she just bangs randoms now and again.

To anyone who reads this, Yennefer reminds me of some women I've dated. Bossy, controlling, etc. They have their moments of sweetness and passion, but the constant bickering gets real old real fast. After a while of dealing with that, unless you're a glutton for punishment, you start to ask yourself: "What the hell am I doing here?"
Do yourself a favor, if the girl you're with, and of course any relationship is gonna have its quarrels, but if you're constantly fighting all day every day, especially if she is the type who thinks the louder she gets the more right she is, that's the type you need to avoid or break up with. To go with Yen over Triss was the hardest choice I've ever made. I've played the games from witcher 1 and 2 and sided with Triss..hell I let the north Burn for the woman..but kept hearing all this reference to Yen...actually interacting with her in three and getting context that "Yeah..Triss has been using the whole amnesia thing to her advantage." thing I ultimately sided with Yen. I was sweet to Triss, friendly as I can be and defended her but I ultimately left her. All those moments that sparked those feelings with her interaction before but I let Triss go in the end. Broke my heart to see it, but felt it was right thing to do.
Yen on the other hand..took me a bit to warm up to her..but it oddly enough made sense why Geralt would want a woman like this in his life. He's a man who's stared down some of the most terrible horrors in his world, survived monster and man alike..he would want a powerful woman who wouldn't take his snarky shit and to keep up with him...but that's just me.

I played through Witcher 3 multiple times now. The first time I chose Yennefer. While I found her frustatingly taunting at times, I couldn't help but admire her. There is obviously loads of story and feelings among them, and despite their frequent clashes they obviously care deeply for each other, so in the end I was happy with my choice.
Second playthrough I picked Triss, who seems to be a better fit for Geralt, at least on the surface. She is a calm, tender and empathic soul, just what someone like Geralt should need, as he is rough, aggresive and "without emotions" (even though he obviously have loads of those). I felt as if Triss also needed Geralt a lot more than Yennefer does, as she seems much more vulnerable than Yennefer, who is often hostile and can be very hard to like.
However, during my Triss playthrough, I reached this particular quest and turned Yennefer down. The truth dawned on me as I watched her reaction: Yennefer needs Geralt much more than Triss ever will. Triss is more vulnerable on the surface, but she will make it just fine without Geralt, because she is likeable and makes friends without much hassle. Yennefer on the other hand, has raised up massive walls around her heart, and almost never allows anyone inside. She has no real friends or family, other than Geralt and Ciri. Taking that from her leaves her an empty shell. There will be virtually no chance of anyone every being let inside her heart ever again, dooming her to remain alone for the rest of her life, even though she has plenty of love and care to give.
Needless to say, playing through the game with Triss as my chosen partner, was torture after that point. For all my future playthroughs, Yennefer is the only one for me. She doesn't say it out loud, because words could never describe how much she loves and needs Geralt in her life. Team Yennefer forever.

Yes you've hit the nail on the head! That's exactly how i feel about their dynamic as well. Triss will have no problems finding friends and living a full life in Kovir, but life would just be a lot different for Yennefer who's just lost her best and only shot at finding love. Another thing I would add, not sure if you'd agree,is that Geralt doesnt really fancy too much peace - otherwise he wouldnt willingly have chosen the Path (even when offered the role of a court witcher). Life with Triss would be too peaceful, whereas life with Yen would be a new adventure everyday. Personally i prefer Triss, but Yen just suits Geralt more.

The games aren't a canon continuation of the books, but the books are absolutely canon to the games. The first game begins pretty much right after Geralt's most recent story ends. The games are extremely well-told fanfiction, but they aren't how Andrzej Sapkowski thinks the series should be concluded, and will write future installments completely independent of them.
However, in the context of the games' stories the books are absolutely a direct prequel to them. If you were to walk up to video game Geralt and ask him about an event that occurred in the books, he'd say "yeah, I remember that."
But if you were to walk up to an Oracle in the books, and bring up the events of the games, she would say "What? No, that doesn't happen."
Yeah, but going with Tries completely shatters the family dynamic between Yennefer (mother), Ciri (daughter), and Geralt (father).
In the words of Philippa Eilhart, Triss is basically the big sister of Ciri.
Cazzomoto the family thing should never be a deciding reason to stay with Yen, if two parents don’t love each other they shouldn’t stay together just for the child’s sake, that’s worse for everyone involved, in my play through Yen can still be seen as Ciris mother figure and Geralt as her father figure but I still didn’t want to be Yen in the end, She can still have both around as parental figures but they don’t have to be together for that. I ended up with Triss cause that’s who my Gerald loved and wanted to be with.

Took me a while, but I realized, with Yen, the fact that she's seemingly always cranky is due to the fact that the world has had her on the back foot most of the time; until the Wild Hunt is defeated, she's in Mama Bear Mode and NOTHING is going to stop her from saving her little girl. She has little concern for the feelings of others because they don't matter. Ciri matters. NOTHING else. In Touissant, she turns into a complete goober once things are settled. You FINALLY get to see her with her guard down and she's truly amazing.
Thats why I love Yen ... I wish to see Yen X Geralt more man ... I want them to have their own child after finding some sort of treatment for infertility or some sort of shit. I am not satisfied with the current ending in Blood and Wine. CDPR is so cruel to Yen. Scenes with her is less than scenes with Triss.
Yen only has Geralt and Ciri in her life. Triss at least has lodge behind her even her friends backed her (including Djisktra)

Yennefer looks exactly like EVA GREEN.
I like Yennefer and have nothing against her, but I had to break it up. It just feels so awkward to me on the scenes where Geralt is flirting with her and I hate the fact that someone as badass as Geralt is tied to her and constantly following her like some poor puppy.
And in the end, I like the story of irony on what Yen's actions bring. It makes for a much more thoughtful conclusion, that sometimes finding the hard truth may not be worth it and keeping the status quo is best. Much better than some Disney type love story.

I still chose Triss. Yen was a strong character and all but I disliked a lot of aspects of her personality...everything had to be her way and often made decisions without involving Geralt. Triss was better for him imo.

Its weird to see Yen act like that, almost dizzy after what Geralt said. She's normally so unfazed by everything and always know what to say.
She didn't expect this. This truly broke her heart.
I chose Triss in my play through for a number of reasons. First is because I played Witcher 1 and 2 and I have spent alot more time around her than Yen; and I gotta say, though it was selfish for her to not want Geralt to get his memories back and she did take advantage of his amnesia, she did so out of desperation for love, not out of ill intention. Second is because Yen has the capacity to be an overbearing spiteful bitch who has a tendency to treat Geralt like shit for no reason.
Dont get me wrong, I can see the appeal of Yennefer, and I know she is the canon romance for the Witcher, just based on my experience with the game I like Triss more. Maybe my opinion would change if I read the books.

Your opinion will definitely change once you've read the books. Everything you accuse Yennefer of is actually what Triss is like in the books. I knew Yennefer was the one for Geralt when I finished reading the book where Yennefer becomes a mother to Ciri. She's far more than what the games portray her as.

I love how surprised she is when he dumps her. The moment she questioned the D'jinn wish and what she thinks are her feelings towards him. That's the moment when most people realized maybe they shouldn't be on that relationship and a lot of times they share that thought with their partner.
Then some hardship comes and they realized: "Oh!, I do really love him/her, I wanna stay with that person", but life ain't a Hollywood movie, when you say that to someone like Geralt (cuz you see in his animation and voice that he really loves Yen), 9/10 you'll break their hearts and they're the ones that will go on with the breakup.
You can have your doubts but the moment you openly shared them with your partner, that's the moment they become certainties and if you seem certain you aren't interested anymore, a lot of people will simply accept your decision out of the love they have for them. If life treats you fair, they may comeback together, if not, well get ready to wonder what would've been life with that person.
milovarquiel I’ve been through exactly what you describe here. My gf of 5 years left and I moved on quickly so I wouldn’t be so hurt any more and a few months later she wanted me back. Difference was that there was no djinn curse in the first place. If there had been I would’ve been pretty curious too.

You know what, it's been a while since I last played the game and this one of only a couple of scenes that I still think about. I'm amazed at how real this scene seemed. It's at the conjunction of great writing, great acting, and great animation, and they were truly able to make a break up in a game feel like a break up. This is one of the best parts of the game, and not for some creepy schadenfreude reason either. It's because they were somehow able to show the depths of human emotion onscreen, and evoke real empathy from the player, both qualities are lacking in many games.
After this choice, I can't describe how dialogues between geralt and yen be funny, specially when geralt bother her

I was put off by that at first as well, but Yennefer made a good point - it was just a corpse. And you know what, I kinda agree.
