  • Hi guys!! We recently got a few birds into the rescue, and one is a one legged amazon parrot! Today we are going to set up an enclosure for her to hopefully help her out a little!

What a great setup you made for her! You really thought of everything, and I can't wait to see how she adapts to it. I love her already! 🥰💚

We just adopted a young red female Eclectus parrot - and one of her claws is twisted and mostly lame, so she can't hold onto food or the perch. She has a beautiful nature, and is very snuggly as a result - as she is grateful to us for holding her and making her feel safe and cosy. We will be brainstorming ideas for her cage, and thanks for making this video! I will get blankets immediately. We will be teaching her to fly (once feathers grown back from the pet shop), so she can rely on her wings.

Her arthritis may improve with the diet change. Seeds have many antinutrients like lectins that can inflame the body.

I have a parrot with an injured foot. Thank you for your video. I take folded towels & put them in plastic that is sealed tight to protect from moisture. I then wrap a Dog Pee Pee pad around the sealed towel. That creates soft pillow that my parrot can lean on & on if falls, then can fall into. They can be easily cleaned when they get wet / soiled with water, food or poop since I replace the Pee Pee Pad & wipe clean the plastic. No laundry necessary.

I rescued a lilac crown parrot years ago and her feet looked a little like hers. My vet gave me some oil to rub on her feet everyday. I also used olive oil when my oil ran out and it was a lifesaver. Try oil on her foot to relieve her arthritis.

She seems like a sweet double yellow headed amazon and it's wonderful that you are able to help her. I feel for her and her owners making them get rid of her. Must be terrible for the bird to loose their family that they have bonded with for so long!

I have a sun conure (much smaller than your parrot) with one leg only. Her only leg is deformed. She is flighted and I put these rectangular outdoor bird feeder trays (Woodlink is one brand but there are others and they have them on Etsy too) in her cages and around the house. Some are platform trays with legs. They all have layered soft bathroom hand towels in them with a wooden ladder (the one with different color rungs that comes in multiple sizes) laying in them. This way she can lay down on the soft parts or use the ladder to help her semi perch or pull herself around. She doesn't need them to move around though. I get them cut to fit her trays for free at Home Depot or Lowes. Plus, she likes to chew them up. She also semi perches on the edge of the trays. Really more like leaning on the edge to prop herself up a bit. She is in a normal bird cage during the day. This way she is at the same level with my other birds. At night she sleeps in a smaller cage just in case she falls out of the tray it won't be a long fall. I also have flat top cages so that she can land on them if she chooses to. I also give her tons of wooden blocks and mahogany pods both made for birds to chew up. I just throw them in one section of her tray. My parrot is able to hang from the side of the cage and that makes it easier relieve herself or by landing directly on the top of a flat top cage with no tray. It is ok if she relieves herself on the trays with towels as I have many towels just for her. She has adapted well and is no different from my other birds.Just as cheeky as the others. I love my little girl.

I think the medical professional is going to be the best person for advice on this one. She's going to no doubt move around less and get less exercise, so may need specific nutritional and physical boosts as well as that leg thoroughly examined. I think it's safe to say that she is definitely more comfortable in that setup and far less likely to hurt herself, so well done.
Please keep us informed, she is a pretty little thing and i really hope for the best.

If the dog crate doesn’t work well, maybe you could try a bird cage turned on its side? The door would be on top, but it would have more floor space. Also, would a seagrass mat attached to the side help her climb more easily?

Pee pads are very dangerous to use with birds. Parrots often like to chew and shred paper and other things. Pee pads contain a type of gel inside of them. If this is swallowed, it quickly absorbs body fluids and swells (think of a disposable diaper) which causes a for certain death of the bird. They also have a plastic backing which is also dangerous to birds.. The newspaper will not harm a bird if they decide to shred it which many like to do. She has a blanket under the newspaper so she has a very soft shelf.

great video Gabby and Chris. I love how you care for your birds. I had 4 cockatiels for almost 2o years. 3 have now passed away, so one is left. He is doing really well and just went to live with my daughter at her apartment. My daughter raised them up from the egg believe it or not. We do worry that Gabby ( good name right) is lonely. So not quite sure how to deal with that. she seems very happy though. Great idea on the dog crate for a cage. Love what you and Chris do! ❤

You are right there is not a lot out there for a disabled bird. My cockatiel broke his leg over the weekend. Our vet set the leg and braced it. But we may be looking at it being amputated. I woke up this morning and his little foot is plum purple. My heart is breaking for my baby boy.

i've only dealt with smaller one legged/disabled birds, but we would vet wrap thick perches. this allowed the strength/stability of big (oversized) perches, but also the grip and softness of the vet wrap. i would just use a whole roll of vet wrap essentially. cholla/cactus perches might be a good width for her potentially ? i think thicker liners over the bars would also help her be a bit more stable. i'm not sure how bird safe it is, but those thick foam moving pads/uhaul pads i've seen used in guinea pig liners, with some blankets/soft liner over top. you could potentially hang sisal/rope play mat from the ceiling and maybe she could use that for gripping ? although i think she would have to learn to pull herself up using that, and she may just not.

My conure just had her leg removed due to her breeder ring. In the middle of the night, it pushed above her elbow and was pinching her. She tried to chew the ring off by chewing her leg. We fought for 3 weeks to save it, but it died. This weekend I have to set up her area. She's a good flyer and never has been clipped. This video will be so helpful, and any updated tips you might have would be great.

I also have a elderly one legged bird, she is a green cheeked conure and she is 31 years old , I wish I could show you how she sleeps, its so cute, she sleeps laying down but rubs her face with her foot, I love it lol... I also have a very large cage so I made the bottom all flat and have everything she needs down there for her. I did recently get her because her old owner died an I dont think they treated her horrible but I also dont think that she was treated her the best either, when I got her, she had something horrible stuck to her head almost like someone dipped her in pancake batter, and also I can not get her to sleep on her own. She literally is on my shoulder all day long and I have to sleep with her on my shoulder, she cuddles up to my neck and lays down which does not always make it comfortable for me , if you have any advice ,please let me know.....Also I wanted to say good job for all the work you do and having such a big heart to care for all these birds and animals.
