    about 6 years late but how come you install right on old shingles.

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  5 месяцев назад +1

      I've always just framed right over the existing roof for speed. There's no real reason to remove the existing shingles, but, you could if you prefer. I always cut away the shingles as needed before weaving in the new shingles from the addition. I'm always in a rush once I start this kind of project to get it under roof, so, speed is my main concern. Thanks for the comment....I can't believe it's been 6 years already

    Question how much $$$$ was spend on materials for this addition. I need a addition like that one for my house. Thank learning from you

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  3 года назад

      I think it was around $22,000 for all the materials and subs. I had an electrician, plumber, HVAC and drywall finisher. I'll double check when I get home just to be sure. Thanks for watching and good luck with your addition.

    How to determined your old roof pitch to the new roof?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  4 года назад

      You string line the top of your trusses to get the peak top on the old roof deck. Then you string line the sub fascia to the roof deck. Then just connect the dots with framing and fill in

  • @exquisitehomes
    @exquisitehomes 5 лет назад +2

    Don't you have to brace between the trusses at the top? You just took the long 2x4 brace off and sheathed on top....hmm.

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  5 лет назад

      The engineering report with the truss order said internal diagonal braces or blocking was not required....I was assuming to do diagonal braces under the top chord but seemed overkill after reading the report.

    Glad to see you relocate the vent. I've been a plumber for 48 years and I do not like a vent near a valley, good job....

    What size plywood was that? 5/8?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  4 года назад

      This was only 1/2" plywood. Thanks for watching and commenting

      @@horstcarpentry thought minimum was 5/8, what u prefer osb or plywood for roof sheathing?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  4 года назад

      If it's 16" OC you could even use 3/8 OSB, which, is crazy. There are tables for minimum roof sheathing. I only use plywood for a roof deck. Thanks for the comments

      @@horstcarpentrywhat kind of nails i use to fasten to rafters?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  4 года назад

      I use ring shank 2 3/8 nail in my framing gun for sheathing, but, you could use any size ring shank. The ring shank really helps hold it down. Always focus on covering the sheathing if there's rain in the forecast and you'll be fine. I've had some bad buckled plywood even when it's laid down well. Thanks again

    Why cut out all the old sheathing?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  2 года назад +1

      For this job it was just to make the attic continuous and make it easier to access the attic of the addition. If I would not have opened it up then I would have needed an access cut out somewhere in the addition. Thanks for the comment

      @@horstcarpentry I have the same type of addition. Since I reshingled my roof I get heat loss and ice dams. The addition leaks in the valleys when it snows and ruins the ceiling Is this maybe because the old sheath that is covered by the newer roof is not Ben removed. Shouldthe old roof be opened to allow air to not build up? Thankyou
