    I really appreciate how you took the time to show in detail how to attach an addition! I am about to start a project where my deck is in an ell of the back of my house and I want to put a roof over the deck. So I am not only attaching to the slope of one roof, I have 2 slopes to contend with! I’m having trouble figuring out how to attach it dealing with the valley of the two slopes of the existing roof. Can you help me figure out how to cut these new rafters?

    Per the video, the triangle roof framing portion of the new addition will come in contact with the existing roof. Will any part of the existing main house's roof being disturbed to make connections to the new addition's roof or the new roof simply sits on the existing one and then we apply shingles?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  4 года назад

      I'm assuming that you're asking if the weight of the new roof will affect the wood framing on the existing roof and in some cases you will need to contact the structural engineer to answer that question. Some existing roofs will require additional bracing and structural support, while others won't.

    Question; so I am looking to expand my garage and the backside of the garage has the roof slope down on that side just like with this room addition. My question is how and could I go about installing a 20 ft beam at the edge of the roof to support it after opening the wall up to add an extra 16 ft of depth to the garage? This video is great because it explains how to connect the roof to the existing roof but I can't find out about the beam to span the needed gap

    Greg I find your videos very didactic. I had seen a lot of them looking for one that cover my particular case.
    My house roof is just 2.5/12 trusses gable roof. Before we purchase the house somebody extended the roof line to add a family room at the center , following the same roof angle. They ended with the roof too low (7’). The house is facing west, so the addition was made toward the East. Later they built an extra bedroom at the North empty corner, to which the installed a flat roof instead of the Gable or Hip roof. That left me the back door to the South empty corner with no roof, slap or anything.
    We want to create a Gable roof for that area but I see difficult how to connect to the to the family room roof.
    The house span is 28’. Family room added next to the empty area extended roof tor 12’, the area to work is 26’x12’ .
    I hav had some ideas, but I rather listen you advice.
    Thanks.
    Javier

    • @gregvancom

      If you're asking whether or not you can remove a section of the existing roof framing for an access opening, you would need to contact a structural engineer. However, I have seen experienced carpenters reframe these areas so that you can have easy access to the attic.

      It would all depend upon the size of the project and since I cannot provide you a structural engineering information, probably won't be able to help answer your question. It really would depend upon how much weight you're adding to the top of the existing roof rafters.

    Would you want a the addition to have its own wall at the point that it connects to the old house? I am planning an addition similar to this and I don't know if I should hang drywall directly to the exterior wall of the old house or frame a forth wall in the addition. My concern would be that the two separate slabs might move differently and cause constant drywall cracking. Your video only shows 3 walls on the addition.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  6 лет назад

      It really would depend upon the type of design, but most room additions connect to the existing house and the exterior wall. However, some of them can use supporting beams to remove most of the wall or all of the wall. These videos might have more information you're looking for.

      Not as long as it isn't going to be creating any structural load bearing problems for the mobile home. For example if you're going to attach the patio to the mobile home to where the weight would be transferred from the patio to the mobile home roof or walls, then that could create a problem.

      Are they 2x8

    • @arvillenoe2542
      @arvillenoe2542 4 года назад

      Reason I ask is even in New builds sometimes it has to be laid out like this and you should be just fine if it's 2x8 but if it's an old build with 2x6 rafters such as my house you may need to add additional support or may have to run the ridge in nail off support it with stiff leg but a lot of factors play into it such as what your building how long how wide how high framing on subfloor or pad and code what's allowed and what isn't . I know here for example my County I can use standard 2x4 in the walls the county next to me I have to use 2x6 in the walls. have a contractor look over the plans and make sure its one who's been in the game a while it may cost you more upfront but in the long run he'll save you some time and money

      @gregvancom  7 лет назад

      More than likely the answer would be yes, but if you live in an area with single-story homes in your neighborhood, then you might need to check with your local building or planning department, because some neighbors don't like other neighbors looking in their backyards and this could be a problem.

    • @gregvancom

      The framing might be the same, except for the roof sheathing. You would need to check with your local building authorities, building department and of course read the instructions from the roofing manufacturer for more information.

      If you're referring to a home addition or an extension to a home or other buildings than yes, but I don't know if you would if you're referring to a mobile home, because they're usually controlled by the Department of Motor Vehicles if I'm right.

    I have a ranch 5×12 pitch I believe off the front there is a concrete slad porch and it comes like 5 feet short of hanging over slab what they did was recessed part of the house right there that's like 4 feet deep and it 20 feet wide. I would like come off it and make a sloped roof in the same way. I'm just wondering how far would I go up on my roof then bring it down and run 4 posts and a header going across? Then put a little railing across the front?

      That really can't be specified since there are variables to every job like sq ft and type of room. Labor is likely to double the cost unless you're good at construction. I will be doing a sun room here in Texas and just economy windows and doors will cost 3000 or more before installing.

    Looking at the addition (50 to 120 seconds in) the overhang design could make a wicked cantilevered porch extension similar to an inverted/upside down ship.
