  • Watch dancers of The Royal Ballet in extended rehearsal and hear the concluding thoughts of Christopher Wheeldon ahead of the world premiere of his new full-length ballet. The last in a three-part Insight special dedicated to exploring this new adaptation of Laura Esquivel's novel Like Water for Chocolate.
A modern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new full-length work, reuniting Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon with the creative team who transformed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale into dance, composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley.

This ballet looks fresh, new, exciting, and energetic. That guy in the turquoise shirt is really into this, he’s got a flair for this choreography.

@@georgias9153 Thank you, after watching this I researched his other performances. He’s got star quality. He dances with fire, like he hasn’t been “trained”. His movements seem to come natural.

@@shviewjames126 Yes, he's very interesting. I think Joseph Sissens (with corn rows) has the same kind of 'beyond technical' quality. I always love seeing them together.

It makes me feel so proud, as a Mexican, to see a Latin American novel, a Mexican novel 💚🤍❤️(!!!), being transformed into a ballet by one of the most important companies in the world. I hope one day I will be lucky enough to see it in the royal opera house ❤️

Ed is a dream repetier! You can tell he fully understands and is even like almost a Jedi mind trick of being in Chris’s mind, and can assist in what he needs and how to fully convey it to the dancers.

@@shanelka8304 If you read the book, sexuality is quite a key part since Tita is unable to marry the love of her life - the author describes her as 'castrated'. This is an excellent homage to the book, which is, in my opinion, the first role of any art inspired by another piece of art.

Very repetitive music. It seems good at any given moment, but... it is like listenining to the same film sound track 20 times. From the whol score, one could complile a 20 min version and the music won't lose.
Very beautiful costumes and scenes. BUT this is pantomime with elements of ballet, it is no ballet.
