  • Find out more: www.roh.org.uk.... Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Fernando Montaño rehearse the Caterpillar scene from The Royal Ballet's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as part of World Ballet Day 2017.
Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real.
Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary and instantly recognizable characters, from the highly strung Queen of Hearts - who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty’s famous Rose Adage - to a playing card corps de ballet, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment.

It's great to watch how Christopher Saunders is so aware of every little detail, but at same time has the whole logistics, timing etc. on his mind, all at once, not missing anything and he is so very constructive and yet he is so kind in his critics, spicing it with humour. Not everyone has this ability and it's something incredible worthful for everyone working with or around. I think he creates a wonderful atmosphere to learn. No yelling, harsh words or insults, though hitting the nail on the head.
Sorry : watch; not wath. I hate typing on my phone. Sorry anyways.

I had no idea that they have corrective rehearsals during performances. Wow, talk about adding on the pressure! I can imagine being on stage and cringing as you realize you've forgotten a crucial improvement! *Ugh* Some of the dancers are so young, but I guess their years of experience help them in the long run. Really nice performances.

You can see both dancers were exhausted yet extremely professional. The audience are not aware of the minutiae and as a performer you know it. Yet, it is the accumulated attention to detail that simply & unconsciously blows the audience way …they don’t know exactly why it’s brilliant, they just know. This is what it takes! 🔥✨

Here's some food for thought- Constant rehearsing is universal to the performing arts world. I sing in a college chorale, which means we sometimes team up with the opera troupe my university runs. We'll do rehearsals before every performance, and if they're spaced out, we continue normal dress rehearsals. The practicing and improving doesn't end until the final curtain falls, mon ami.

marilyn this is how dance teachers help the dancers. In the beginning it’s like “step step turn jump!” but once we learn the choreography, they can direct the kinds of ‘textures’ to give to each move “smooth smooth pull and push!” and then we remember these things and it gives the dance much more feeling. When I’m dancing I can almost hear my teacher saying “plié, turn out, pull in, relève!”

I have no idea about ballet, but I rewatch this to 1) enjoy the ballet but also 2) to just learn how to be a kind but firm yet respectful instructor. It's a very hard skill to learn and watching a few videos, Christopher is a master at it.

Of course Eric's Caterpillar was stunning, but I personally prefer Fernando's interpretation. His movements have more whimsical fluidity than Eric's, and I think he really captures the essence of the character. Amazing. This is just my opinion, I love every interpretation I've seen and the Caterpillar is my favourite in this ballet by far.

What I like so much about this rehearsal is that the dancers are so professional in completely following the dance Masters instructions without any discussion. Their trust in his judgement is complete and the whole excercise is conducted with the performance in mind, to enhance this to perfection. Absolutely marvelous to watch, this is the result of years and years of discipline and training. The respect is mutual and joy unmistakable. Incredibly beautiful.

This looked so perfect in the performance that it never felt like they've had the need for rehearsals.
And of course they had to because it would be illogical that a big presentation like this one was made without any planning and entirely out of improvisement.
But seeing their preparations amazes me and makes me value their work even more than I already did by just watching the presentation alone. All of their practice hours have been totally worth it ;)

Floored by how analog the arts are! With all the tech out there today, they’re still using a real pianist and the director has to verbally coax the right performances out of him and the dancers. The performers, director, and music are being held in step only by the human desire to be on the same page. So cool!

Just by watching the inter-actions reminds one of the human flow of life. Nice videod session. I'm inspired to joined a collaboration where the energy is riigghhtt.. to learn, create, independently & as a team to bring forth wholesome feeling & hopefully, an great impact. We all hv our handicaps. I SEE & LEARN GRACE in ACTION as the players & band do their parts. May I also mention ... away with ego as one gets in sync to DO THA DANCE. ... LIVING. 🎈As a dancer, while rehearsal could be sacrificing, the excitement of accomplishing and presenting the whole DANCE IN COSTUMES, was & is indeed, my favorite past of dancing. BLESSINGS to these wonderful dancers & crew. Tree-nj-usa

This makes me so happy and jealous that my thick wrestler-judo frame will never make these movements as wonderful as they do. I not will probably not be able to see it unless they make an international tour of it to California. I guess I will have to suffice with RUclips clips
