Never met his parents, always alone except for his Dragon Quest games
When he finally finds someone who really cares about him, he made him spend almost 20 years in jail.
And when he finally gets out, he's completely alone all again...
But he still smiles, he still dreams about Dragon Quest, he still keeps fighting
What a great caracter, we truly welcome you, Ichiban

This game does such an amazing job at characterization it's insane. Between the bond conversations, random chats while walking, conversations after eating, and actual cutscenes it'd be impossible for me NOT to care about each and every character down to their core. It also helps that they did a really good job on the English dub and the VAs seemed to have put a lot of effort into it (so many dubs just feel lifeless with 0 emotional range).

See, this is what I love about Ichiban. Guy’s the definition of “a kid at heart.” Yeah, it may sound a bit corny to say that your childhood dream was to be a hero (and he admits as much), but he’s got a childlike worldview, and rather than treat him like a joke character, the game uses him to say, “You’ve got that inner child too, y’know. Don’t let the world snuff it out. You can use it to do something good.” Basically, he’s the foil of Sundowner from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance; instead of being in touch with the “cruel” part of one’s inner child, Ichiban is in touch with the part that says, “Nobody’s beyond saving, you look out for your friends even if they take a different path from you, and the world can be a bad place, but we can try to make it better.” Of course, the moments when reality hits him tend to hurt that much more because of it, but he never loses that innocence. Sorry for the long-ass essay; this is just what I find so endearing about this bat-wielding, possibly brain-damaged Dragon Quest fan-turned-ethical-gangster/vigilante. If I had to pick anyone from Yakuza to be my friend...well, the list would be fairly long, but Ichiban would be high up there.

I rewatch this scene and this video once a week. I didn't play I'm English, but it's fun to heat them speak. The reason I play it so much is just the fact that, for some reason, this scene makes me almost cry. It's such a relatable scene to me because, like Ichiban, I wanted to be a hero when I grew up. "Life is work" is a true statement, but this reminds me to have that dream and keep it. I've never had a video game that has inspired me more than Yakuza 7.

Absolutely loved the world and character (this is also my first Yakuza game), and it was really awesome to see a studio figure out how to do turn based combat but make it feel kinetic and almost real time.
