I just now, when searching for this aria on Spotify, found out that Maria "was" an opera songstress. She died 9th January this year, 2022, two months shy of 72 years old. Sadly there is very little of her work to be found outside of youtube. Her interpretation of this aria, Voi Che Sapete, is still the best I've come across.
I'm speechless. How on Earth a 20-year-old singer can perform like that? What a smashing debut! The human voice is indeed the most powerful and sophisticated musical instrument. Rest in peace Maria Ewing, you'll be remembered.
I really do think Italian is one of the most beautiful languages, and it's very suitable for singing. I wish I could live in a multilingual society like Austria in the 18th century, where every composer spoke Italian and French including their native language.
I was moved greatly by this aria like never before. Superb acting,I loved the look of this character from the first moment, the face, the costume, the sensuality... it was captivating! Sung with a voice from heaven so well placed and articulated, it stirred the emotions, Maria Ewing scored a perfect 10 points! All of this combined with the sublime, incredible music of Mozart, make this a treasure beyond compare.
That was simply stunning... lovely... otherworldly! May Maria live long, prosper and bless the world with that rich, powerful, graceful and gorgeous voice of hers! I was more moved by her rendition than any I've seen.
First of all, gorgeous singing. Vibrant timbre, flawless Italian, heartfelt delivery, unpretentious, unadorned, heartfelt. She was also a great Carmen.
Through the magic of RUclips I could listen to a bunch of other acclaimed sopranos singing their versions. They were outstanding, but there is something totally magical about this one. Can't explain it, can't understand it, she just has something more. Not a single nuance is overdone, every note has its perfect shape, the tempo is ideal to express all the emotions of the aria, it's nothing short of a miracle.
Maria is such a great cherubino. Not only great voice and superb acting, Also so pretty. her voice is as light as a feather. I love it... so much emo..
Maria Ewing has in every role a special, unique interpretation. She is completly different from the other singers because she is the only singer who understands not to pay attention to the technical aspect of the voice but especially to the expression and interpretation and words. And that in a natural way and not overdoing. Respect!
I have this DVD and found that the director had all but recitative prerecorded so the acting could be on a higher level. Indeed the results are more like a movie with singing than a regular stage performance. And Maria Ewing is the finest Cherubino. The entire cast is extraordinary.
I LOVE what I see and what I hear! She looks like a child, like an angel and her voice is so beautiful ! She acts perfectly, I'm totally INTO this scene. BRAVO !
If you like opera then you surely have to admit this is a beautiful singing. We all have our favourites, but we can all surely hear the real and pure talent!
Maybe I’m reading into it, but I feel like Mozart, given the tools available to him, and his cultural context, sublimely uses his medium to capture the nervousness, the confusion, the trepidation, and the capricious thrill of seeking pubescent carnal pleasure for the first time, as well as its accompanying guilt. He did this over and over, for so many fundamental human emotions. And Ms Ewing’s masterful rendition is unsurpassed, both vocally and dramatically. Artistic perfection.
Not only does she sing it so well, she really acts it...even with tears in her eyes. Thsi Cherubino really has the hots for the Countess, you can see. :)
This gives me chills and brings a tear to my eye. Ewing goes so deep into her character, with utter conviction. Truly touching to witness an singer so committed to her art.
I had to come back just to make sure what I was hearing what a voice and thanks to the like of RUclips will be here long then I will live I hope other will enjoy this as many of us have all ready done.
When most people open their mouths (including me), yak comes out. When opera singers open their mouths, this, this extraordinary sound comes out. So beautiful. Mozart really knew how to harmonize, huh!
she projects the absolute terror in which Cherubino has to feel at the moment as he sings to the Countess--whose husband is sending him off to join his regiment.

I used to think no one could sing this like Cecilia Bartoli, but Maria Ewing just knocks it out of the park. Bravo.
Diese Version ist meine Lieblingsversion!!

Her acting is superb.....a young boy confused by these unknown feelings of love.
Excellent......
On horrible days, and my best ones, this angels voice brought great joy and comfort. May she Rest In Peace.
Aw.
This is the most believable Cherubino I have ever seen. Lovely.
EmKay Animations can’t agree with you more!
and also sing as angel...
wow. she really understands the character and embodies the role. and such beautiful singing!

@@dominothewonderdog I totally agree w you! She doesn't sound like a boy.
One of the best versions.
Maria Ewing was so beautiful back then.
I've watched many Cherubino's on youtube and this performance is the most convincing and sincere of all!! I loved it! Thanks for posting :)
Stupenda .
Interpretazione e recitazione prime in assoluto. Fantastica !!!
10 years ago, this incredible video was added to my favorite list. It is still my favorite version of Voi Che Sapete today. So touching!
I think this movie really wonderful. Maria Ewing is the best Cherubino I ever saw. Thanks!!

There are many beautiful versions of this song, but when you can hear AND see Maria, she is simply the best.

My absolute favorite. out of all the videos of this song that I've seen. Def. my fav.
Definitely the sweetest Cherubino ever and the best interpretation of this aria!

True! I am surprised how good she really is!

Angels in heaven couldn't beat this voice. Not only can she sing, but she is actually in character, which is rare in an opera singer.
She is the best Cerubino, I've ever heard and seen!
Sublime. I have looked and looked, and couldn't find a better cherubino.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!...for postingI have heard so many versions but this is by far my favourite Voi Che Sapete...WOW Maria!
Absolutely breathtaking sound.

It's in a movie by Ponelle. Singers are Herman Prey, Dietrich Fisher Diskau, Mirella Freni, Kiri te Kanawa and Maria Ewing. Conductor is Karl Böhm.

What the heck is an LP

as superb as when I heard it sung by Maria Ewing decades ago. Fantastic!
Her voice is so beautiful and mesmerizing ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The most marvellous performance
Truly excellent ....close your eyes and you are lost such a beautiful voice.
this is such a thing of beauty and perfection, any superlative, u name it
she projects the absolute terror in which Cherubino has to feel at the moment as he sings to the Countess--whose husband is sending him off to join his regiment.
You're right! The other Voi Che's look happy - but they should be terrified.
She has a wonderfully strong voice that adds muscle to her yearnings that no other singer approaches.
After listening to a c ountless amount of version, I have come to the conclusion that Maria Ewing pretty much owns this song.
Yes, in deed. More than 40 years ago I saw her on PBS TV broadcasting this opera. She was much younger like a teenager at that time.
Superb. What a great performance.
quelle voix magnifique...
