  • This my analysis of Tony Stark’s character development across the 9 Marvel Cinematic Universe films that he has appeared in leading up to Avengers Endgame. I take a look at the key moments that made him the man he is in Infinity War - a cinematic evolution 10 years in the making.
Thanks for watching. This is my second ‘video essay’ and my first real 'character study' so any feedback you have would be appreciated.

Hey! Thanks for checking out my extended look at Tony Stark. This was produced in the gap between Infinity War and Endgame, so the ending of this video was pure speculation. Perhaps I'll do an updated version in the future.
If you liked this, please check out my other videos. This was only my second video essay/ video ramble and my more recent ones feature better sound and editing! Hope you all enjoy ☺.

I know that this is a bold statement to make but Tony Stark has and always will be one of the most deep and complex characters in all cinema.
When we first see his character in Ironman, he's depicted as a narcissistic billionaire playboy who thinks the world revolves around him. Ironman 2 delves deeper into his grandiose sense of self worth and shows us that he is very insecure and greatly cares about his image. Showing that when his friends aren't there to stroke his ego for him, he's left with nothing. In the Avengers, the only reason Tony wanted to work with Nick Fury was for his own selfish desires. However when he meets with the likes of Captain America, the symbol of American patriotism, and Thor, a god of thunder, he doesn't feel like the center of attention anymore and does not take that well. It isn't until the nuke in New York launched that Tony chose to turn himself around. Knowing that the nuke would've killed innocent lives, he directed the nuke at the army, giving his life for the greater good. Ironman 3 shows how the near death experience affected Tony Stark's psyche. He was not the same after the battle at New York, finally realizing that he's not this godlike figure he thought he was. The whole movie is Tony Stark getting the reality check that was coming to him, so many years ago. He's forced to cope with his PTSD and insecurities. Age of Ultron continues with Tony coping with PTSD as the traumatic experience he had in space was the motive behind Ultron's creation. It is at the end of Age of Ultron when Tony Stark finally accepts his flaws and moves on.
Captain America Civil War shows Tony finally opening up to the government and his colleagues after he broke up with Pepper. He takes full responsibility for the thousands of deaths on Sokovia and tries his hardest to prevent such an atrocity from happening again. Cap however does not approve of how Tony handles things, thus splitting the Avengers into two. Tony then discovers that Bucky was responsible for his parents death, Cap confirming his awareness of this touched a nerve, putting Tony in a rage as he let his insecurities get the better of him. After the intense battle in Germany, Spider-Man Homecoming proves that Tony has been fully redeemed and is no longer the insecure, selfish person he once was in Ironman 1. Which shows in his relationship with Peter as a father figure. Peter was the one person who fully changed him for the better, from a spoiled rich businessman to a caring father figure to Peter.

Well in the first movie he realised what his inventions are actually doing to the world.....he felt guilty for it.......after the New York thing he was traumatized.
Thanks was got into his his head and since then he tried everything he could do just to save others....he created Ultron cuz he felt guilty he was scared of his friends dying before his eyes and him doing nothing about it.
He accepts to sign the solovian accords just so he could be under control so that he doesnt create more monsters.
He decides not to go back to the superhero life but still had to
Peter's death haunted him. He couldn't rest.thats y after the snap after defeating thanos pepper says him to rest
      Srry for ranting
      Idk what happened....rn..😅🤣🤣

This is amazing. You did a really good job in showing the facinating and slow character development. Nine movies have a lot of time to show a gradual change and it's nice to see it laid out like that.
However I disagree with you that Tony acting according to his beliefs is the only things that remained with his character. He never grew out of his impulsiveness, and a very big chunk of his actions is still motivated by guilt. It's just that the source of guilt have changed over time, or simply added to the already existing guilt.
I was also a bit disappointed that you didn't get a bit more in depth with how his trauma affected his actions. Him working and improving the iron man suit is very reminicent of him working on suits in Iron Man 3. It also ties in to both his desire for Ultron and the Sokovia Accords. All of those are practical solutions to for dealing with stuff like guilt, paranoia, trauma and it's something he's pretty consistent about.
But overall a really great video dude. You deserve a lot more views.

This was in my recommended videos list after watching 3 hours of ways the government spies on you using dogs. Did you know know they implant dogs with little cameras? It's sickening but hey, how else are they gonna find out who's a good boy after all. I found this video truly impacted the way I think about government surveillance. That live footage at the end of the FBI storming the house of a tax paying citizen on the orders of a tyrannical leader is the reason you should throw out your potted plants if you bought them from a supermarket. Those stems are microphones people! Wake up. This man learnt the hard way, not even the rich Tony Stark was safe from the government sticking it's face in his private business. 9/11 wasn't an inside job, it never even happened people it's a classic false flag and psyc ops perpetrated by disney to bury their rivals under a mountain of corporate taxes. Open your eyes but not too wide in case the government sensors in your sockets will activate to let them know it's time to intervene.
The frogs turned the chemicals gay.

It also shows that he is different from the other universes where he has alcoholism as his flaw. Here he doesn't have to deal with the fact that he lived a double life as CEO and genius tinkerer in the Day and Iron Man when shit hits the fan. He and Iron Man are one as he said. He doesn't have to confide with a woman who would become his worst enemy when she chose her father over him. And Stane died early on before he could push him down a path of alcoholism. People say alcoholism is part of Tony but Feige and Forveau made it possible for Tony to have other addictions

Another thing I would like to note is that in, and before Iron man 1, Tony was a narcissistic brat, so on so forth, and a player, going at it with different reporters, etc.. However, in the cave, Yinsen tells him about his family, and once Tony responds saying he doesn't have one, Yinsen says "So you're a man who has everything, and nothing." This also struck a nerve in tony, making him realize that he had no legacy, no one to pass the torch to, and the only important person other than rhody that he had was Pepper. Thus I believe that is why in Iron man 1 he started flirting with her, and thus started loving her in 2, avengers, 3, endgame, etc.

So glad I found this video!
But honestly I’ve been thinking about it and I don’t think superman’s character development is *that* bad
Don’t get me wrong, the films are wank but still
In MoS he spends the film hiding but learns that he can use his powers for good and claims at the end that he’s “here to help” but not everyone sees it that way which is shown...
In BvS he finds out that he causes as much destruction as good. At first he thinks he’s justified (which is shown by his conversation with Lois) but throughout the film he learns how much destruction he has actually caused which is shown by how much people hate and fear him e.g. the disabled person who wrote “false god” on his statue (and for some reason wasn’t stopped as he was doing it),the court of people and Batman. He spends most of his 20 lines of dialogue deciding if he should continue being superman or not. He then comes to the conclusion that he should and sacrifices himself to kill doomsday, probably thinking that Wonder Woman and Batman will keep the world safe
In justice league he’s finally at peace when he’s dead. But then realises that it’s his responsibility to stay alive and keep the world safe.
