Wow, a positive MCU Video Essay from your pal HiTop Films? What is this, an early April fools Iron Man video essay? Naw, I just love Jon Favreau’s Iron Man and want to talk about why it’s The Insane Origin, hence the title Jon Favreau’s Iron Man - The Insane Origin. This is probably my best video, video essay, passionate rant, since the Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man videos. The title ain’t clickbait, Iron Man is insane, it’s insanely good, and the making of the film is insane. May be a hot take, but Robert Downey Jr. gives his best Tony Stark performance here. I may not love where the MCU is now, but I sure do love Iron Man. Remember without Jon Favreau and this film, there would be no MCU. If you want more MCU rants or love letters from HiTopFilms, let me know in the comments. Much love to you all and especially to those who read this nonsense.

Oh yeah.
Great video as always.
its amazing to me that their used to be a time were the market wasnt so over saturated that iron man and the dark night could come out the same summer and both succeed
Yeah there was no fantfourstick to still their box office
@@dmitrykim3096 yeah but i mean like i feel we are starting to see (already seeing) the start of a stage in superhero films were companies can do one of three things, make a good superhero film that can stand on its own two legs, make one that doesnt surpass the bar of expectations and under-performs due to competition...or ones that prey on nostalgia and a brand. And i think as peoples expectations get higher (since the number of films going up means people have to start being more picky) We end up losing good films as prey to the third option. Its easier to prop oneself up ona brand when the over saturation causes peoples bars to be higher. Fantfourstick failed because it most considered mostly below average by many due to its terrible production and rushed reshoots. But we are getting films which have great reviews, from both audiances and critics alike, but are being stomped out by brand overconfidence, i dont wants good superhero movies to go the way of dredd (best example i can think of) where every element that movie succeeds, but it just is crushed under the inability to reach its deserving audiance.
@@RhysClark97 it's not about just superhero's it's about any successful genres nowadays. Like they squeeze the last dollar out of that leaving it die
True
Dark Knight succeeded, Iron Man didn't bomb. Iron Man only made 580 million worldwide while Dark Knight passed a billion. It would be like an Avengers movie passing a billion the same year Ant-man made 500-600 million so BOTH Ant-man movies.
Is it really over saturated when three MCU movies were released in a year and all three pass a billion? Because that was last year. And don't try to say it was all for hype for Infinity War/Endgame because that didn't do squat for Ant-man and the Wasp. What a weird two years and six movies: Billion, 2 billion, HALF, billion, 2 billion, billion.
Just to keep track: Black Panther, Infinity War, Ant-man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Endgame and Far From Home. DC released Aquaman and Joker and both passed a billion.
Now that's nuts as it's 10 billion in box office in just two years.
It's almost like if you don't make a crappy movie, you'll make money. And then there's Venom....
"Dont waste it. Dont waste your life." That's when he became Iron Man to me. That's when he realized he has been given a second chance to make a positive difference.
Absolutely. That could be considered Tony's "with great power comes great responsibility" moment
100%
It's also important as it sets up the entire redemption arc for the character, which he very much achieves throughout everything up until the very ending of Endgame!
Yup. He walks out of the cave, baptized as a new creation. What I love is that when he's rescued, that new fire in him wouldn't even let him go home and rest before starting the first steps to making things right.
"That's when he realized he has been given a second chance to make a positive difference."
You can never waste your life, you can only wake up to the fact that you were wasting it - and then do something about it!
"You are Iron Man. You will always be Iron Man." That line hits so much harder after Endgame.
When I saw Iron Man for the first time as a kid, Stane’s betrayal absolutely surprised me. I genuinely was worried that Tony might not be able to beat him with the weakened arc reactor. Plus you can’t go wrong with Jeff Bridges
It's a year later but I just wanted to agree, Jeff Bridges is never a bad thing
Dude Jeff bridges was so scary as a kid I love this man as an actor lmao

_deez nuts_
@@wespicedmemes oh yes a dead meme
For me, the moment he becomes iron Man is when he stops to try and save Yinsen. He tries to convince him to get up by talking about his family and how it's going to be okay, only to see how Yinsen knew this was the plan all along. He watches as someone sacrifices themself just for him to live, and that's the mantra and the mindset Tony decides to carry with him until his death in Endgame.
Tony was still a pretty big douche by the end of the first movie, and still a big douche in the beginning of the 2nd one. So for me, it's when he realizes he's dying in Iron Man 2 and has to come to terms with that, and finally when he asks Pepper to be with him. That's when he loses the figurative cold, hard, metal shell he already had on, and allows him to use the one he *built* properly.
@@John-X Old habits die hard. But even at his worst in Iron man 2 he was still 10 times the man he was before the cave.
Nice analysis. I like to think that his sacrifice haunted Tony until it challenged him to do the same.
It's the same for me. This is the first moment in the movie where Tony seems to actually care about someone else above himself
I like how you put John Favreu before the title of the movie. He deserves that respect

Iron Man, until the moment he died, was a work in Progress. He only became complete when he snapped his fingers.
Yeah, that torn-off-the-light moment! :) I agree, it was like final transition from selfishness to greatness.
I agree with him being a work in progress (always upgrading just like his suits 👌) but I argue Tony had already become a selfless leader in Infinity War. he really stepped up and did everything he could to take down Thanos, losing half his suit in the process and stopping just short of dying after being stabbed in the gut.
to me Endgame's sacrifice was overkill for him in that regard, and yes also literally :p
Movie 2 47:24? He was being sassy af but ok...
You're right. His journey wasn't complete because at that very moment when he snapped. He became the hero of a saga.

“I am iron man” I just think that’s when Tony embraces who he is meant to be, all the way up to when he is about to use the gauntlet effectively committing suicide and he still believes that is truly who he is “I am iron man”
Gauntlet thing didn't really need to happen since similar scenario already happened in first avengers movie, when he sacrificed him self to take missile to space. That already established how far he is willing to go. Gauntlet thing was flat for me since it was only used to kill of downey iron man. He probably just didn't want to act as iron man anymore but still it felt like complete mess.
Marko Lomovic well Thanos has been the one thing he left alive and with the gauntlet snap he was able to finish his last piece of unfinished work
I tell you what, I've heard so many times how Iron Man was barely even a B-lister superhero in the comics.
Yet every time I played the Avengers arcade game, he was my go-to.
That doesn't change the fact that prior to 2008, Iron man was overshadowed by Spiderman, the Hulk, the fantastic four, wolverine, the punisher, daredevil and to a certain extent, Blade and Ghost rider.
The suit is cool in of itself even without the character.
Not sure where you heard that. Iron Man was slept on by the greater public for sure, but in the comics he was always a firm A-lister. Just look at Civil War.
@Screaming Soldier Why are you booing him? He’s right.
Iron Man was low C or D list in Marvel Comics.

I really really miss the tone and film-making of this movie in the modern MCU. It really feels different from from the more recent movies, and mostly in a good way.
I saw Iron Man in theaters when I was three, and it's still my personal favorite movie of all time. Definitely not the objective best movie ever, but it's my favorite.
I kinda miss this type of Marvel film. Lower stakes, more character development and the "boss battle" in the end is almost not even the core part of the story, its Tony's character development thats the most important thing.
While I think Marvel needed the Mouse (Disney) to eventually make the epic sized movies that would come later, I often wonder what would have happened had they been able to keep it all in house. Produce a few team ups, or flicks with cameos, but essentially solid, organic and stand alone stories on film like Iron Man is. I always collected comics, but immediately started buying Iron Man back issues after this movie. That should be the goal. To create fans, and maintain them. Excellent video.

This is honestly one of the best movie deepdives I’ve ever seen
For me, Tony becomes Iron Man when he tells Pepper to overload the reactor and to "Just DO IT" while he's still up there
iron man 1 will always have a special place in my heart. it was a lot of people's first ever superhero movie and it still holds up after all these years
Jon Favreau is a cinematic genius. Theres only a select number of people that understand story tellling and directing as well as he does. Hes one of the greats.
First off: Thanks for making this video. I’ve followed your stuff for a little while, and I always enjoy your insight and passion for these films.
Second: I paid WAAAY too much attention to the fancy suit as a kid, so this next bit is a retrospective view. To answer your question about the moment in this movie in which Tony became Iron Man, I thought the mirror-blasting scene was great, but to me, Tony became Iron Man the instant that shrapnel went into his chest. If we look at how his MCU journey plays out, how his nemeses like Whiplash, Killian, Ultron and Thanos are either the creation of his egotistical past or reflections of the other parts of his character(driven by logic, “cursed” with knowledge, father figure, etc.), you can say that the quintessential Iron Man characteristic is that he’s always a man at odds with himself. The minute the irony hit home that his own devices are used against him, to me, is the minute his identity as Iron Man manifests itself.
Third: Keep doing what you do, man. You’ve inspired me to be a filmmaker the same way Sam Raimi inspired you, and I’m not exaggerating at all.
That interaction between Pepper and Tony when he asks her to go into Stane's office is when he became Iron Man to me. It showed that he cared about her and genuinely feels that he's been a horrible person, it showed that he finally cares, it shows that he listened to Yinsen and anybody that gave him any advice and he will take into account what others have to say in the future. It can't be seen a lot in the later movies of Iron Man much, but every decision that he makes after that scene is always taken with care, he really wants to do the right thing.
Man everybody trippin, I love ACT 3. Makes everything come full circle.
It feels weird hearing Jon favreau being so passionate about the filmmaking behind iron man and then remembering he made something as creatively bankrupt as the lion king remake.

Jon Favreau and RDJ created something truly amazing, because they didn't just make a superhero movie, they made a movie about people in a superhero story. That's the life blood of the MCU and why we keep coming back!
6:42 RDJ: he’s easily half the character
Us: you’re fully the character
Where are the automatic subtitles my dear Alex? I'm from Brazil, i'm not fluent(yet) and the subtitles help me a lot to watch your videos, so please put on them always that's possible xD
15:12 so satisfying
I'm at 21:22 writing this after you said his heart and all his shit he takes for granted saves his life man I feel like imma cry 😢😂😂 ts is hitting me in the feels
7:26 isn’t that what Stan lee wanted to create? A character we would hate but learn to love
When “DUMMI” hands TS the MK1 arc-reactor/Rhodey comes thru/ & connection with Pepper is what allowed the story to continue: Unity & Trust
"Who is the best Uncle Ben since Uncle Ben" *Jack Murdock has entered the chat*
14:17 Too bad Jon forgot this while remaking The Lion King.
Recently rewatched phase 1. Impressed how well they established the tone, themes and character work that would go on to define the MCU so early on.
Rewatching this movie and loving how the best scenes for me are some of the conversations the characters have
