I wish that Marvel wasn’t so domineering. They cut the majority of Malekith’s scenes which apparently portrayed him as sympathetic villain, they pushed Edgar Wright out of Ant-Man, and they wouldn’t allow Iron Man 3 to have a female villain because “it wouldn’t sell as many toys”. Hard to argue with that last one though, we all know how those Aldrich Killian toys were flying off the shelves
I read that all that was because of some creative committee made up of several Marvel executives, especially, the infamous Ike Perlmutter. However, in 2015, the committee was dissolved and no longer oversees Marvel Studios.
@@emanuel6693 It was supposed to be Maya Hansen who obviously does appear in the film. She essentially fulfilled Killian’s role as it was supposed to be revealed that she was really behind everything. Also here’s the quote from the director on the change: “There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem. Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft. We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female. So we had to change the entire script because of toy making.”
God Bless Mickey Rourke for being such an honest anti-Hollywood actor, dude wouldnt have taken this role just for the paycheck. It's clear Favreau and Theroux where overpowered by Marvel
ISingand DoOtherThings Yea, people need to know that Feige wasn’t always the main guy in charge, or the guy with the last decision. Good thing all those people are gone, and Feige runs even more than just Marvel Studios.
Part of what gave Favreau's movie "Chef" such an added layer of enjoyability was how clearly that film was a metaphor for both itself and Favreau's experience working on this movie. The Chef (Favreau) works at a famous kitchen (Marvel Studios) and is getting ready to present (Iron Man 2) to a food critic. The Chef wants to outdo himself, get ambitious, try new things, really change-up the menu. The owner of the Kitchen wants him to stick to what works and coast along. He's pressured in to doing so and, wouldn't you know it, the critic thinks the food lacks ambition and plays it too safe. So the Chef quits the gig at the restaurant and opens a small food truck (The movie Chef itself) which is small, modest and reinvigorates his passion.
as well as Justice League, Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2, Star Wars 7 and 9 (honestly 8 needed studio interference), Suicide Squad, Batman Forever, Transformers 5 (unpopular opinion), Fantastic Four (2015), X men Origins Wolverine, and so many more, at least Justice League got it's Directors Cut now we need the rest of them
@@revampedrenegotiate I feel like that title goes more to Star Wars 7,8,9 or Josstice League but you make a good point, I do still like the movie but it does need a directors cut, it's clear that Michael Bay wanted to make a genuinely good film with TLK, so I hope someday we get the Bay cut
I may be bias but I don’t see Tony’s actions in this movie as regressing back to pre-cave it shows the signs of someone with suicidal tendencies. If Tony is reverting back to him pre-cave it’s because he was depressed as well. Dependency on alcohol, acting reckless and agitated, feeling isolated, and in particular: giving away possessions. He gives Pepper the company so he knows it’s in good hands and lets Rhodey leave with the suit so he knows the suit is in good hands. He is planning for a world without him. When you watch this movie thinking about Iron Man 3 and seeing him have PTSD and panic attacks it makes even more sense in the trilogy of Iron Man.
He even tells Fury at the end: “I was dying. C’mon, don’t we all go through that?”. And it makes a LOT of sense. Not because he’s dying, not because of his father, not because he’s having to carry so much weight on his shoulders. None of that. It’s because THAT is who he is. Tony Stark IS reckless, chaotic, irresponsible, ignorant. But he’s also intelligent, clever, impervious, methodical. You could almost say his negatives are balanced or a reflection of his positives, and there’s a reason for that. At the end of the day, he knows, no matter what happens, he’ll figure it out and everything will be back to the status quo, and he’s the master of the status quo, even when he’s at a disadvantage. I mean, we’re talking about a guy that grew up as a billionaire playboy building and selling weapons, became a superhero after almost dying by his own weapons, fought an alien army, fought a robot army he built, fought against the guy that stopped the nazis from conquering the world and fought against the Mad Titan by himself to his last breath just to save his loved ones. If there’s something that Tony Stark definitely has are his irreducible will and balls of steel. He’s the type of going through the greatest growth ever and sacrificing himself for the universe, he’ll always find a way to go back to being that smartass that just wants to have some fun, specially since you could say he built himself as a human being so that’s just what he’s always been used to and it’s what makes him such a great character.
Thank you, to me Iron Man 2 showed how Tony is in the comics. He can be egotistical, uncaring and just flirtatious. He just has a self destructive personality and it could have been better excited here. I like Iron man 2 even through it's flaws.
Raphael Adôrno Your explaining of Iron Man’s character Is the main reason why i think Peter should’ve stayed as his own man instead of being portrayed as Tony’s sidekick?
That's what's presented in the film, though. Hammer is interested in monopolizing the defense department (and eventually the government) with his inferior designs, making Stark's suits look like antique that he can dump on his frontyard. Vanko is only interested in seeking revenge and unleashing chaos using the same blueprint for the reactor his father and Howard built, demolishing Iron Man's world peace image.
To add to Mickey's point, he stated that he did tons of research and dedication to his villain. So much so that every tattoo he had, was supposed to signify a trait or story of his character >:(
Iron Man 2 is kind of the Spider-Man 3 of the Iron Man trilogy. The director had a brilliant and beautiful idea and the studio screwed it over and shoved a bunch of other shit in it.
Except it was Kevin Feige who pushed for Venom, and Sam Raimi ultimately had the power to veto. He tried to make his Spider-Man 3 and a Spider-Man 3 with Venom as the villain. Instead, he should reworked his plan to make Spider-Man 4 the culmination of the overarching narrative. Imagine if Harry (as Green Goblin) assisted Spidey in a fight against Venom and Sandman, and he parted with a message such as "We still have unfinished business," something that shows Harry isn't fully redeemed yet.
Makes me feel bad for Jon. The original script seemed so genuine Edit: I’ve never gotten so may likes! Thank you guys and especially HiTop! I still love this video you made!
I like how you titled the first video "Jon Favreau's Iron Man" and this one is "Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2." Very representative of who was in control of each product.
Kieron Campion “This dickhead” is a great RUclipsr who has a great reputation for being credible when it comes to superhero movie essays. Also, we do know that Favreau had less time to make this movie and a good amount of the story he was trying to tell was cut from the movie.
2 main things I would do to fix Iron Man 2: first, Pepper struggling to run the company and the government and Hammer taking advantage as a result of Tony’s mistakes is a great concept. unfortunately, what starts all this is Tony’s behaviour as a result of his blood disease. this is boring because it stems from an entirely physically based conflict. it would’ve been much more compelling of Tony abandoned his responsibilities because he wants to run from his father’s mistakes with both him and Vanko. that way, the consequences Tony faces would be tied to that theme of legacy, making it actually feel explored in the film. next, Howard’s video to Tony should have gone beyond him just telling him that he loves him. he should have admitted that he mistreated both Tony and Vanko, and the video would end with him saying that it’s Tony’s destiny to be the great man that he failed to be. this would be where Tony would get his shit together and realize that he needs to stop shaming himself for his father’s mistakes and rather make up for them. and rather than Vanko being treated as a one note baddie in the third act, Tony would try to reason with him, telling him the same lesson he learned, to let go of the past and instead look to the future. but Vanko can’t let go of his hate towards the Stark legacy, making him a dark reflection of Tony, making their final fight much more thematically satisfying. there are other Marvel films I would love to rework as well, such as Iron Man 3, Black Panther, Ant Man And The Wasp, Captain Marvel and Far From Home (I wouldn’t bother with Thor The Dark World because Ragnarok was pretty much a redeemed version of that movie anyway). anyway, great video Alex. keep it up.
Darth Jar-Jar That’s the thing tho. Every suit was improved by Tony to get rid of some past problem, in each movie. Otherwise the suits would just look different and have no meaning or continuity while Tony the character, develops.
Watching later MCU movies on TV feels like a game play for me, actors with CGI costumes infront of a green screen. Iron Man on the other hand while not realistic per se looks more believable and well made.
Ik that real mechanical suits look so much more awesome then these CGI toy suits but in reality RDJ was having a lot of problem wearing real mechanical suit. Think about it You are in a mechanical suit, A suit that weighs as much as you or even more possibly on the set for 5 hours straight everyday for three fricking years. Can you believe it? One of the many reasons I almost worship RDJ is that he had the persistence to go through that stuff. But naturally if there was a more easier option given to him he would choose the easier one (CGI). Wouldn't you?
@@priyanshsiingh It's not so much the fact that it is CGI, but that the actual suits themselves look alot faker. Just look at Infinity War/Endgame, the suits don't look real at all, they seem way too smooth and stuck together, almost like a second layer of skin, as opposed go how alot of the older suits looked where you could see certain pieces moving independently and disconnecting.
“Daffy Duck to Tony’s Bugs Bunny”... with the video of Justin Hammer peaking his face out had me laughing out loud. Justin Hammer is the best, and it’s not too late to bring him back for a little bit.
I just watched Iron Man 2 today with my son, so when I started watching this I was prepared to disagree with you. Broken Sequel. Right, whatever. I _just_ watched it, and I really enjoyed it, so what can you bitch about? But yeah, I totally agree with you. I want Favreau's cut, too.
Say what you want about this movie, but the scene where Tony's dad tells him his greatest creation is him is one of my favorite and most emotional scenes in the MCU.
Sal Reyes Right? It’s even better after you watch Endgame where he actually meets his dad. If the time travel in that movie was more of a paradox, my head canon would be Howard said that because after Tony grew up, he realized he looked like the man he met years ago, and kinda knew or hoped it was his son. To bad it’s a different timeline that was erased but would be pretty cool lol.
@@cosmicdream17 even though I have my problems with MCU Spider-Man, I would not go that far because those movies are great, fun and deep when you look into their themes as well as Peter's growth.
@@cosmicdream17 I sadly have to agree with you.😢 How sad it is to see how more and more unrelatable and overly dependant Spider-man has gotten in these movies and just how little the writers try to achieve to tell a great story with characters that have actual relatable problems.
Truth Be Told90 Really took their chance of having a perfect trilogy. Legit just remove the Venom plot line and rework how Harry redeems himself while still dying, have Sandman still be the redeemable villain, and it’s perfect.
what marvel does is basically the equivalent of pixelating and reducing the resolution of an image, sure from far away it looks ok, sometimes even fine, but the closer you get to it, the more blurry it appears, in trying to make a product that appeals to as many as possible, they remove all of the things that make the image an entire picture.
When I was a teenager I loved the original Iron Man. When I saw Iron Man 2, I did not find what I loved so much in the first one. You have putted words on my feelings about this movie. And you have done it so well that it's indeed a little depressing. Thank you very much for this video.
Man i love your content so much, when you talk about these movies, directors, heroes, you show so much love about it and i can see the same level on your own creations, i love the way you show the sponsorships, it's really fun to watch, the camera work is top notch and the editing is 10/10. Keep up, thanks for all this amazing content. a big fan from Brazil 😁
@@HowardTheDucksWong oh trust me Spidey 3 is my one of my most HATED movies. It's not just disappointing, it's BAD. But the comparison still stands. Studio chopped mess.
@@HowardTheDucksWong no he's right. Spiderman 3 isn't bad it's just a cluster fuck because marvel pushed for venom they had a great fucking original script, just like this iron man
While I’m always the first to to jump on taking the piss outta Disney Iron Man 2 came out when Marvel was under Paramount. Chef is great and you make a great point just keeping it accurate.
Ben Cawthon What you mean? Disney bought Marvel at 2009. Even if the movie was already in production, it’s abundantly clear Disney at the helm influenced the final product.
@@radrno7 that's weird, i remember hearing about DIsney buying Marvel after Avengers came out. also, all these movies have the Paramount logo, no the Disney logo. so...... what?
Raphael Adôrno while you’re technically right, disney did buy marvel in 2009. But that was only 5 months before the movie came out. By that time, the script and a lot of scenes were completely done propably, so chances that disney had absolutely anything to do with iron man 2 are really low.
Leo Bladini disney bought marvel studios december 31st 2009, iron man 2 came out may 5th(?) not sure bout that one. So yes, disney did own marvel studios/marvel entertainment when iron man 2 came out but no, they had nothing to do with the movie.
I feel the same “fatal attraction” for this movie. I’ve seen it sooooo many times. And I agree with you; I would say there is art that makes you imagine less and there is art that makes you imagine more-and this film makes me imagine more for all the reasons you listed. Bare tin mind, if art makes you imagine less, then it makes your life less.
Ivan felt so impactful to me watching this as a kid and I remember being disappointed by the lack of exploration on this character and the dynamic with Tony even when I was 12
You should do one for each Marvel movie. Not everyone should be long like this. But i Want to know your opinion about every single movie in the MCU. And i think we all want that. Edit: Thank you for all the likes.
I don't want that. It makes me sick. I have mental illness so I can't bare when someone respected as Alex talks bad about the some of the movies I like.
Dude would have so much content if he did that at the same length as this. Fuck it, I enjoy his essays, I enjoy his take on it. He can take his time, I’ll enjoy it all the same.
He already gets a shit ton of hate comments for his supposedly "pretentious" opinions of the MCU Spider-Man movies and other films (such as BvS, Man of Steel). I worry for his mental heath if he makes an entire playlist's worth of MCU reviews.
No wonder this was his last MCU movie. I'd love to see him get another crack at it but not like this. I feel like he would only do it if he was promised freedom
Logan Harrison He’s had the chance since Feige gained control of Marvel Studios and Ike Purlmutter isn’t in the picture. I’m sure Feige would let him do his own thing. He’s caught up doing the Mandalorian tho, plus I wonder who he would want to make a movie of.
@@soliquid3420 where did he post it I did some searching and couldn't find anything about him posting it. Maybe a directors cut of Iron Man 2 to surprise fans for the ten year anniversary.
Based on this review, and Nando's, is it safe to say that this was the start of the "franchisation" of the MCU? The first Iron Man movie felt so fresh and the acclaim was earned. The Incredible Hulk, ditto. They didn't have the weight of setting up much after (except for the end credits). This was the first movie where I felt the playful MCU formula.
@@anthonygarcia8749 That's not true. The thing is that Iron Man 2 is notorious for being micromanaged by Marvel Studios. By contrast, Shane Black's Iron Man 3 is a movie that is (mostly) his own. It's also awful telling that the only reason there isn't an Iron Man 4 is because Disney/Marvel doesn't want Mel Gibson to direct it.
It may have felt that way when the movies released but as someone who watched both of these movies right next to each other Iron man 2 was wayyyy better
This movie could've been really great. I love that line from Mickey Rourke, about the executives in Marvel dictating the whole thing, wanting a one dimensional xenophobic portrayal of a villain instead of a more instersting one. It is really a microrepresentation of how capitalist world is now - people who hold financial power says how things are going to be, and thing are going to shit. It reallys complements the whole message from the first movie. It's a kind of metalanguage, and it's not the only case in MCU movies.
18:50 To be honest, I saw that as human nature. I've seen this time and time again with a lot of people I meet. They are something, go through an event that changes them, but they then fall back to the "old" habit after a while, and they had to pull themselves out of it again. I agree with everything else 💯
Bro is it really possible to get the Favreau cut though? I'd love to see it! Btw, ever since I came across your channel, you've given me a new (and better) way to look at filmmaking and storytelling. I can legit say that you've changed my life! Much love, and keep it up!
I like Iron Man 2 in my childhood. This was the first MCU movie I watched as a teenager with my parents. But now at a more mature age i don't think i like this movie as in childhood... It's a shame that now this movie is being destroyed by fans. Although if you look at the situation with the MCU, I'm afraid for the future of this universe. If they (Marvel Studios and Feige) do not go to experiments (like the Joker for example or Logan) then in the near future they will collapse, which was the WB in 2016. This is really worth thinking about.
Logan and Joker are made because studios are desperate. They don’t know what to do next. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart want to stop, Joker just came out of nowhere after the bomb Justice League.
Nation of hydration then if the movie is good u will be surprised. Also, they bring up so many directors from anywhere right now. Sam Raimi for Doctor Strange 2, Chloe Zhang for Eternals, and many other directors that I don’t know. Also, they don’t need to be build up to something so free creativity
Before this video, I had very muddled feelings about Iron Man 2 when I grew up. I knew it had good moments, moments I enjoyed as a kid and still enjoy now, but it also felt like something was missing that was stopping me from calling it a good movie in the same way I didn't think it was quite as bad as others said it was. After watching this, I finally understand what the heart of the problem was, and thank you for providing your insight once again.
The earlier Iron Man armors are just that… mechanized ARMOR. The Iron Man suits in Infinity War/Endgame are just suits. They don’t look like armor at all. Just metallic skin suits.
Not quite. A villain has evil intention, an antagonist is simply a stumble stone in the way of the hero. Hammer is borderline due to the way he gets Vanko out of prison and his disregard for others, but his "big plan" is simply to get more applause than Tony. He isn't exactly a criminal mastermind.
@@anuvette no. Thanos is the protagonist of Infinity War. Tony and the Avengers are the antagonists. In Endgame Tony and the Avengers are the Protagonists and Thanos is the Antagonist. Protagonists are the central character. And Antagonists are the obstacle they have to overcome that propel their story forward. The 2 terms are entirely independent of morality, good or evil.
"So you know how everyone LOVED the first Iron Man? Well I asked myself how can we make people love this one 5x more than that one. And I came up with the idea to have what should be 5 separate Iron Man movies and cram it all into one." "Aren't you worried it might seem all over the place?" "Well I WAS but then I got hungry so....went to get a burrito and..I forgot about it." Have NO doubt that's actually what happened in the pitch for this film. 100%
Ironman 3 is the spider man 3 for the franchise. That piece of shit thrown out every human aspect of Tony and made it a PC cartoon. He is no more narcissistic or reckless, just have comically inconvenient "panic attacks".
@@Ignisvoid001 ...You sure about that buddy? Iron Man 3 is the Spider-Man 2 imo. Tony faces a challenge he never could've prepared for, himself. Tony being his own eternal villain comes to fruition when even him dying for the planet yields no reward. His enemy in IM3 is his ignorance, just as ego was in IM1 and masking was in IM2. His final challenge is accepting that he'll never be safe in life and neither will his friends or family. He's not "narcissistic" by the same standards because he has something called "A character arc" Ever heard of one? Also those "Inconvenient Panic Attacks" I don't think I'd amount literal PTSD as "Inconvenient" or something that doesn't make him human but ok. Sorry, guess it's hard to understand a "PC Cartoon"...
@@captainsensational5865 He also beats the Mandarin (yes, the Mandarin) by trusting people. His suits help but it's Harley, Rhodey, and Pepper of all people who are the most essential to beating him. @@sammcguire3798 the panic attacks comes from nowhere. No one other avenger has came up with PTSD, not even the Shield agents. Tony himself just shrugged it at the end of avengers. The PTSD looks like a cheap way to make the protagonist struggle without addressing the drinking problem anymore. And are blatantly thrown just when the plot needs it. The "arc development" comes undeserved too. Fighting aliens in space made for the introspection and personal grow needed for that? What was even the theme of Iron man 3? Don't be a douche to any rando that could become a super villain? O just get sure no one never got your address? A impossible task for a celebrity.
I honestly think that if Marvel didn't intervene, Iron Man 2 could've been one of, if not the best superhero film of all time. Amazing video, really made me wish we had the original!
Because you talked about the first 2, I need to see your thoughts on number 3. The concepts and ideas in that movie was amazing and make for some seriously necessary stuff that needs to be talked about
Jon Favreau explaining the process of making this film in the first minute of the video gives me a clearer probable cause for why Scott Derrickson left Multiverse of Madness (I have a weird gut feeling that DS2 was on a similar track to Iron Man 2) Thankfully, Raimi has a little more time than Scott did to make sure his film is perfect. EDIT: Aw dude I went back into this comment to add something and I lost the heart I got from Alex 😂😂😂
Your uploads are probably the ones I look forward to the most out of everybody I'm subscribed to because like Favreau in IM1 you put a ton of fucking heart and passion into your videos. also thanks for including a Snyder Cut easter egg ;))))))
I've been rewatching the MCU films recently and I knew that Iron Man 2 was the weakest of the phase 1 films, but I was still able to enjoy it and even go from the movie with the main themes still in my mind. Before I rewatched it, the last time I saw Iron Man 2 was in theaters in 2010. I think the reason why I was able to understand the messages the movie was desperately needing to show is because of the fact that I saw the whole MCU play out and this movie had enough information for me to piece together exactly what it needed to tell me. Granted, it should've gone the full swing and shown everything it was trying to say, but there are worse movies that fail a lot harder at telling their messages.
Pre-watching video: I still love and defend this movie for being the most fun of the Iron Man movies and being the most rewatchable of the trilogy Post-watching video: Fantastic analysis! I agree with about 85% of what was said and you actually helped give me a new perspective on it. Especially when discussing the parallels between Howard and Tony. I actually think the movie has aged better because of the MCU and where it is now, it's also given me a better retrospect on it having seen further films in the franchise. Some slight criticisms: I don't really see that much of a difference between the 4K restoration and the original (maybe I should try watching it on Disney+ and I'll see a difference). Beyond that, I actually love the action and think it complements the story well and also didn't know how much practical aspects there were but glad there was. As for Marvel's interference, I wish it wasn't as it was, but I think it worked out personally and I'm glad Feige has learned from his mistakes (especially when it came to meddling in Phase 2) All in all, still love the movie, agreed with most of what was said, and still love where the MCU is now and where Tony's story was taken
I think the Studio interfered too much on wanting to setup for the Avengers, i think if they let the director do what he inteded they would still probably get what they wanted and better
after seeing what they did with falcon and the winter soldier, i hope they are able to give rhodey some more depth compared to this movie in his show, Armor Wars. fingers crossed that they don’t fail him again
Thank you Alex. Even though the film is a mess you also went through the good parts of the film. Unpopular opinion: Iron Man 2 is one of the most underrated MCU movies. And also thanks for giving Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer the recognition he deserves.
Yk what I just realized. Bucky was born in 1917 making him 1 year older than cap born in 1918. And Don Cheadle (war machine) is 1 year older than RDJ (iron man). Cap and buck fight in captain america 2 and tony and rhodey fight in iron man 2. They mirror each other perfectly.
They should add the deleted scene where Ivan Vanko wants Tony Stark to experience what it's like to have his family name destroyed , after Starks family destroyed the Vanko family.
I've seen videos of yours before but I couldn't help but notice how amazing your writing and editing in this video is. Subscribed. Looking forward to more.
The fact that they invented an entire character for Wiplash because the original didn't fit the movie in any way speaks for itself about what a bad character Ivan is. Personally, I was thinking about Hammer doing an Armor War using secondary characters (so secondary that they have no personality than the armor itself) and that they serve as an extension of Hammer's desires to use Stark's technology militarily (that and because Hammer is the reflection of Tony wanting to be like him), those villains would be just Wiplash, Crimsom Dynamo and other famous ones with War Machine in front and the Hammer drones in the background, the most ridiculous villains being that man with legs like stilts exhibited as failed attempts to recreate the Iron Man armor that Tony shows in court. It is also necessary to show why Tony became alcoholic and carefree not because he is an idiot, but because internally he is suffering from the fact that his life is slowly ending. I imagine that the revelation of the poisoning arises in the middle of the film, after Rodey plays with the MK 2 and Pepper finds Tony with a migraine and there she discovers his damaged chest, in a moment of vulnerability, Tony and Pepoer have a previous moment to be able to forge your relationship in the future.
Regarding the new element - yes, I also find it contrived that the element Howard conceptualised and JARVIS said explicitly was impossible to synthesise, Tony synthesised anyway after a short montage. That seems silly. But this element being a replacement for palladium in the arc reactor I have no problems with. Howard knew that his arc reactor wasn't perfect and that it had so much more potential. It's not contrived that this new element is also suitable fuel for arc reactor if Howard only stumbled across it because he was exploring the physics of the arc reactor, if the element was the other solution to arc reactor equations or whatever. He knew the properties needed for such fuel and found out there was a hypothetical metal also sharing these properties with palladium. Either way - Howard Stark didn't invent arc reactors and then also found an element that coincidentally could power arc reactor - one invention lead to another
i gotta say , i love your spider-man reviews but its when you make reviews of other films that you truly shine it shows you can do amazing videos on something that isn't your heart soul and passion , great job!
This hits even harder when you considering Jon Favreau wanted to direct The Avengers, but Marvel turned him down and brought in Joss Whedon because apparently they thought Whedon was cheaper. I wonder how different the MCU would be if Favreau had been brought on for The Avengers. Or even Iron Man 3. Although I don't blame Favreau for not wanting to return for Iron Man 3, after Marvel mucked up 2 to make it a infomercial for the Avengers. If I made this movie I was proud of, but then corporate fucked with the sequel, I wouldn't want to come back and do a third one either.
I knew that this video was coming out, and I saw Iron Man 2 on TV yesterday, so I decided to watch it in sort of a preparation for this video. It is legitimately painful to watch, but not because it’s bad. It’s because you can see the attempts at a passionate, deep, character driven story being drowned out in favor of a lightweight, toy selling, action piece. I won’t go through everything because you completely nailed it in your video (great fucking job by the way holy shit 👏👏) but it was really sad to watch Favereu and Downey’s vision for the sequel be butchered by studio interference. The potential for a really good maybe even great movie was there, and it’s sad to see what it ended up being. I do still enjoy it, but it’s hard to watch. Great video Alex, keep inspiring! 👍
One of the main reasons I love your commentary on these movies is that you get in the perspective of the creators. Lots of people blame the directors and actors when a film doesn't go wel.
I think the same main problem you talked about happens in every marvel product. It has a very interesting concept and a lot of potential but the studio tune it down and leave an ok movie, usually a mediocre one, and sometimes a really bad one. I feel it is happening a little bit with Wandavision for example. Let's hope the studio let future directors have creative freedom
Given your evident love for the MCU and some of the powerful scenes that it houses, I think you should explore the brilliant character development of Nebula in a future character essay. Her story embodies that of your one marvelous scene with rocket raccoon and I think we would all love to see one of the most heavily developed characters in the MCU finally receive a video that gives her justice for her character flaws.
This video was the most well thought out and best put rant I had ever heard, I have like, subsribed and you really deserve it. It honestly made me feel shit I haven't before while watching somthing on RUclips. Left speechless.
I think one of the main issues that no one mentions was that Disney bought Marvel in between the release of this movie and they proabbaly wanted set up a bunch of stuff for future films. Also Paramount probably wanted to rush it out before Disney had full control. I honestly wish Paramount would have bought Marvel instead of Disney. The final Paramount MCU film was Iron man 3 and then Disney had full control. We could have gotten more darker and more serious MCU films closer to the comics with a maybe even a R rated film if it was Paramount. The same year of Iron Man 3 they released the Wolf Of Wall street and all the other films they have made like Godfather.
Its really disappointing to see tons of people being so accepting of Disney's purchase of Marvel and subsequently 20th Century Fox. If only they knew about the unethical practices and questionable strategies of the Disney Corporation, they wouldn't be so happy about it. Moreover, this only solidifies their grip on the filmmaking industry and reduces the competition.
@Failingpepper 11 yeah though I think Paramount might have given them more freedom because each Marvel film plays it very safe and with the humor. It all must be really light hearted. Even Infinity War and End Game I didn't find that serious because all of the humor in between. The worst case of this was Age of Ultron . If you watch that 1st trailer its extremely serious with Utlron talking about how hes gonna show the world something beautiful like an intimidating villain. Then in the film its full of humor and Ultron is just telling jokes. Some of the jokes are even about cracking an egg which is so stupid. With films like Guardian's of and Galaxy and Ant Man the humor works because the concept is so creatively bizare. Though not every film can be like that the only slightly serious Marvel film was Captain America The Winter Soldier.
Funny you should say that. The Marvel Knights brand of films were made because they could be darker and detached from the MCU. The movies we got out of that were Punisher: Warzone and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
my restructured plot of ironman 2: open with hammer and vanko arguing over the armor/bots but as coworkers, no jailbreak. cut to vanko & father, establishing hate for stark. cut to hammer weapons pitch going poorly & that only suits would sell. cut to un meeting and test footage radicalizing hammer. whiplash attacks at drag race, but gets pulled out by hammer who puts vanko in the situation the taliban put stark in, then gives the "attack his legacy" speech. hammer kidnaps vanko's father as blackmail. focus shift on hammer as vallain. stark & rhodey fallout at party, then the military confiscates armor. insert shield/fury, stark family movies, and tony fixing his chest. vanko fuses whips and reactor tech into an armor. tony overcomes his bs. hammer forces ivan to do the boss fight scene w rhodes add the hammer bots attacking here instead of the expo. vanko goes down, but theres a hammer tech logo on the whiplash armor (taliban callback) leaving him and hammer industries as replacement for AIM in ironman 3. cut to rooftop reunion scene. fury establishes link w tonys dad and shield, proposes avengers initiative.
BALA KRISHNA thank! i think this would give essentially the same ending and story but emphasizing the character arcs and establish Hammer as the proper foil to tony stark. minimal reshoots, would mostly just be reorganizing scenes

Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft. We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female.

Fuck all the haters, I love Iron Man 2

Same!
2 main things I would do to fix Iron Man 2:
first, Pepper struggling to run the company and the government and Hammer taking advantage as a result of Tony’s mistakes is a great concept. unfortunately, what starts all this is Tony’s behaviour as a result of his blood disease. this is boring because it stems from an entirely physically based conflict. it would’ve been much more compelling of Tony abandoned his responsibilities because he wants to run from his father’s mistakes with both him and Vanko. that way, the consequences Tony faces would be tied to that theme of legacy, making it actually feel explored in the film.
next, Howard’s video to Tony should have gone beyond him just telling him that he loves him. he should have admitted that he mistreated both Tony and Vanko, and the video would end with him saying that it’s Tony’s destiny to be the great man that he failed to be. this would be where Tony would get his shit together and realize that he needs to stop shaming himself for his father’s mistakes and rather make up for them. and rather than Vanko being treated as a one note baddie in the third act, Tony would try to reason with him, telling him the same lesson he learned, to let go of the past and instead look to the future. but Vanko can’t let go of his hate towards the Stark legacy, making him a dark reflection of Tony, making their final fight much more thematically satisfying.
there are other Marvel films I would love to rework as well, such as Iron Man 3, Black Panther, Ant Man And The Wasp, Captain Marvel and Far From Home (I wouldn’t bother with Thor The Dark World because Ragnarok was pretty much a redeemed version of that movie anyway). anyway, great video Alex. keep it up.
Samuel L Jackson - "I'm here to give some exposition, maybe next time I'll get to kick some ass" Brilliant!
Jon Favreau when making Iron Man 2: 'Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good...'

I think the early mechanical suits are sooo much better than the new liquid looking ones
Darth Jar-Jar That’s the thing tho. Every suit was improved by Tony to get rid of some past problem, in each movie. Otherwise the suits would just look different and have no meaning or continuity while Tony the character, develops.

@@sammcguire3798 also it showed who he was without the suit.
@@captainsensational5865 He also beats the Mandarin (yes, the Mandarin) by trusting people. His suits help but it's Harley, Rhodey, and Pepper of all people who are the most essential to beating him. Tony starts off feeling like no one will love him or understand him but he finds the people closest to him do just that.
Hopefully you do one for the third one, I unapologetically love that movie
I honestly think that if Marvel didn't intervene, Iron Man 2 could've been one of, if not the best superhero film of all time. Amazing video, really made me wish we had the original!
Because you talked about the first 2, I need to see your thoughts on number 3. The concepts and ideas in that movie was amazing and make for some seriously necessary stuff that needs to be talked about
Iron Man 2 was trash, i wish Marvel had let Jon Favreau made the movie he wanted to make, Demon in a bottle storyline.
Jon Favreau explaining the process of making this film in the first minute of the video gives me a clearer probable cause for why Scott Derrickson left Multiverse of Madness (I have a weird gut feeling that DS2 was on a similar track to Iron Man 2)
Thankfully, Raimi has a little more time than Scott did to make sure his film is perfect.
I’ve always thought of this as the MCU’s Spider-Man 3: a decent film that tries to do too much, and ultimately succeeds at very little of it.
That description at 11:30 of what Ivan could have been sounds oddly familiar...
Killmonger: "Yo. Why are you talking about me?"
Agreed. I’ll gladly take Iron Man 2 over any Phase 4 movie or tv show.
Pre-watching video:
I still love and defend this movie for being the most fun of the Iron Man movies and being the most rewatchable of the trilogy
Post-watching video:
Fantastic analysis!
26:46 Responsibility.... If that was intentional.... Bravo.
'responsibility' *zooms in on peter*

I think the Studio interfered too much on wanting to setup for the Avengers, i think if they let the director do what he inteded they would still probably get what they wanted and better
after seeing what they did with falcon and the winter soldier, i hope they are able to give rhodey some more depth compared to this movie in his show, Armor Wars. fingers crossed that they don’t fail him again
Thank you Alex. Even though the film is a mess you also went through the good parts of the film. Unpopular opinion: Iron Man 2 is one of the most underrated MCU movies. And also thanks for giving Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer the recognition he deserves.
wow, can't believe you'd make a video so good it single handedly ended a global pandemic. King shit 👑
4:09 to skip the ad you’re welcome.
They should delete the scene when whiplash wants his bird and the bird is with whiplash
Marvel should let the directors of the marvel movies have freedom and have great character development for the villains

No it isn’t. It’s a mess of a story, suffers from tonal whiplash, wastes its villain, has a terrible twist that shalmylam would despise, etc.
Either way - Howard Stark didn't invent arc reactors and then also found an element that coincidentally could power arc reactor - one invention lead to another
i gotta say , i love your spider-man reviews but its when you make reviews of other films that you truly shine
it shows you can do amazing videos on something that isn't your heart soul and passion , great job!
"If you make God bleed, then people will cease to believe in him."
Years later, Tony makes Thanos bleed.
I still love it, my favorite iron Man movie and the reason I started to love the MCU and iron Man who became my favorite character on film
Race scene where Tony introduces new suit tech is one of my favorite scenes
It’s always the second story in a trilogy that has time constraints (Iron Man 2, Loz Majoras Mask, Halo 2 etc.)
26:43 hitop, dont think i didnt notice you editing the footage of peter with the word 'responcibility' i see what you did lol
It gets worse. Favreau ditched Marvel for Disney. That's like ditching DC for Warner Bros.
0:40 there is a Hell's Angels support shirt on the guy talking to Scarlett Johansson
I love how he interrupts himself in editing.
Thank you for making this content for the times we’re in 🙏
I think the same main problem you talked about happens in every marvel product.
He covered that in his Avengers Endgame video essay, a ray of positivity in a video filled to the brim with negativity
Daniel Neil God, if only
Its really disappointing to see tons of people being so accepting of Disney's purchase of Marvel and subsequently 20th Century Fox.

If it can work for Justice League, why can't it work here.
I don't know if this is my favorite video of your but definitely once again great video great work Alex
my restructured plot of ironman 2:
open with hammer and vanko arguing over the armor/bots but as coworkers, no jailbreak. cut to vanko & father, establishing hate for stark. cut to hammer weapons pitch going poorly & that only suits would sell. cut to un meeting and test footage radicalizing hammer.
whiplash attacks at drag race, but gets pulled out by hammer who puts vanko in the situation the taliban put stark in, then gives the "attack his legacy" speech. hammer kidnaps vanko's father as blackmail. focus shift on hammer as vallain.
stark & rhodey fallout at party, then the military confiscates armor.
insert shield/fury, stark family movies, and tony fixing his chest. vanko fuses whips and reactor tech into an armor. tony overcomes his bs.
hammer forces ivan to do the boss fight scene w rhodes add the hammer bots attacking here instead of the expo. vanko goes down, but theres a hammer tech logo on the whiplash armor (taliban callback) leaving him and hammer industries as replacement for AIM in ironman 3.
cut to rooftop reunion scene. fury establishes link w tonys dad and shield, proposes avengers initiative.
BALA KRISHNA thank! i think this would give essentially the same ending and story but emphasizing the character arcs and establish Hammer as the proper foil to tony stark. minimal reshoots, would mostly just be reorganizing scenes
Poor Favereu, you can tell he’s struggling, tired, and exhausted while finishing this movie
